Gene therapy improves stem cell transplantation

Dutch tv journal of 15 June 2006 about new method to prevent immune reactions after cell transplantation. Suicide genes form the basis of a strategy for making cancer cells more vulnerable, more sensitive to chemotherapy. The approach has been to attach parts of genes expressed in cancer cells to other genes for enzymes not found in mammals that can convert a harmless substance into one that is toxic to the tumor. Most suicide genes mediate this sensitivity by coding for viral or bacterial enzymes that convert an inactive drug into toxic antimetabolites that inhibit the synthesis of nucleic acid. Suicide genes must be introduced into cells in ways that ensure their uptake and expression by as many cancer cells as possible, while limiting their expression by normal cells. Suicide gene therapy for cancer requires the vector to have the capacity to discriminate between target and nontarget cells, between the cancer cells and normal cells. acute lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, ALL, AML, ANLL, anemia, blast crisis, blasts, blood, bone marrow, cancer, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, CLL, CML, erythrocytes, granulocytes, hematopoiesis, hematopoietic stem cells, leukocytes, lymphoid lineage, lymphoid stem cells, myelocytic leukemia, myeloid lineage, myeloid stem cells, platelets, red blood cells, RBCs, thrombocytopenia, white blood cells, WBCs, hairy cell leukemia, human T-cell leukemia, chemotherapy

Millions of British people are at risk of developing serious health conditions because of low vitamin D levels declares a new scientific review commissioned by the Health Supplements Information Service (HSIS). Despite the proven health benefits of vitamin D, about three quarters of British adults fail to reach even their basic requirements thanks to poor dietary intakes and a lack of sun in this country. Now nutrition experts are calling for the shortfall in our diets to be made up by improved dietary intakes and vitamin D supplementation. As studies show, supplementation has a guaranteed effect on vitamin D status. In this latest study review, called Health Impacts of Vitamin D: Are We Getting Enough?, independent researchers analysed the current evidence surrounding vitamin D. The aims were to identify the main health benefits associated with the vitamin and to explore issues surrounding optimal daily intakes. Leading dietitian, Dr Carrie Ruxton, and senior lecturer in Human Nutrition at Manchester Metropolitan University, Dr Emma Derbyshire, reviewed more than 100 published research papers relating to the potential power of vitamin D, mechanisms to explain its benefits, vitamin D intakes and recommendations. Their paper will be published in the June issue of Nutrition Bulletin, the journal of the British Nutrition Foundation. Scientific research suggests that vitamin D plays an important role in helping combat a host of serious health conditions, including cancer

ESMO: First-Line Erlotinib Improves NSCLC Outcomes

www.medpagetoday.com MILAN — Non-small cell lung cancer patients (NSCLC) with advanced disease achieved a substantial and highly-significant survival advantage when they received initial therapy with erlotinib (Tarceva) rather than a standard chemotherapy regimen, researchers said here.

Typhonium Plus – Alternative Cancer Treatment (Typhonium flagelliforme / Keladi Tikus extract) As a natural supplement may help to combat cancer/tumor and stimulate anti body. Typhonium Plus formula is traditionally used by cancer/tumor patients to combat breast, colon, rectum, liver, prostate, leukemia, cervical cancer and lung cancer. Cancer is not one specific disease. It is a process that can affect any organ of the body. A healthy human body consists of normal growing cells which carry out the life processes in a normal and orderly manner. A normal living cell can, for various unfortunate reasons, turn abnormal or cancerous. It multiplies in the body rapidly and excessively, forming a group of cells of uncontrollable growth resulting in a swelling. Then the abnormal cells break up and invade adjacent tissues and organs and destroy them. With each hectic, uncontrolled and disordered cell growth, the body’s energies are misused and wasted. If this continues unchecked, death can occur. Typhonium flagelliforme / Keladi Tikus is a herbal plant grows in East Asia as traditional medicine to combat cancer. ASCO 2009: Experimental targeted therapy improves progression-free survival for advanced NSCLC

Dr Roy Herbst, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, US ASCO 2009: Experimental Targeted Therapy Vandetanib Improves Progression-Free Survival in Patients with Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer The results of an international trial have shown that adding the experimental targeted therapy vandetanib (Zactima) to docetaxel improves progression-free survival in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose disease has progressed after first-line treatment. This is the first phase III study to show that adding a targeted therapy to second-line chemotherapy with docetaxel results in a clinical benefit for patients with advanced.

Does The Newcastle Disease Virus Improves Mesothelioma Remission Rate?

Does The Newcastle Disease Virus Improves Mesothelioma Remission Rate?

Article by Thomas Ajava

A recent study is suggesting there may be some good news in the Mesothelioma fight. The Newcastle Disease Virus appears to improve the Mesothelioma remission rate in victims.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos in most cases. The cancer gets its name after the part of the body that is usually affected first – the mesothelium. This is a buffer like organ that is heavily lubricated and allows the organs in the trunk of the body to move about without causing injury. Unfortunately, the cancer is usually only discovered at the latest stage and survival rates are extremely low.

There is a form of virus called an oncolytic virus that is getting a lot of attention in the battle against cancer. This virus is unique in that it can be programmed to enter into cancer cells and essentially kill those cells. The Newcastle Disease Virus is such a disease. In recent test tube testing, the Newcastle Disease Virus was shown to successfully kill the Mesothelioma cells it was exposed to.

Given the success of the test tube testing, animal testing was undertaken. Test animals were implanted with Mesothelioma tumors and given time to recover. They were then treated with Newcastle Disease Virus. The results were fairly shocking. 65 percent of the Mesothelioma cancer cells were impacted positively by the virus within a mere 14 days. The average survival period of the animals was greater than 50 days, the outer limit of the test. Animals that did not receive any of the virus lived less than 23 days on average.

It should be noted that the above results were arrived at when one treatment was under taken. Researches noted that multiple treatments produced even better results with the cancer cells and tumors regressing significantly. This is simply great news.

The next step is to pursue human testing with the Newcastle Disease Virus. We are unaware of a clinical trials at this point, but keep an eye out for them. Perhaps this is the major breakthrough we have been waiting for when it comes to defeating the scourge of Mesothelioma.
