Question by : Why are emphysema patients more prone to pulmonary infections such as bacterial bronchitis?
Can I get a 4 line answer for that question? Thanks

Because the lungs lose their elasticity the alveoli (little air sacs) are damaged making it difficult to breathe. Lungs become weak, extra secretions, trapped gas in the dmaged alveoli leaves them open o infection.

Hypothyroidism increases deaths from infections, heart attacks, cancer and emphysema, Mark Starr, MD
fatnews.com Hi, this is Larry Hobbs @ FatNews.com. Thyroid expert, Broda Barnes, MD, PhD found that heart attacks increased in Graz, Austria from one in 125 to one in 14 after antibiotics were introduced which prevented early deaths from tuberculosis, Mark Starr, MD notes in this audio clip. After analyzing 70000 autopsies, Barnes also noted that prior to 1945 when antibiotics were introduced, people dying of tuberculosis had advanced atherosclerosis in their coronary arteries. After the introduction of antibiotics which prevented these deaths, deaths from heart attacks increased nearly 9-fold, from one in 125 deaths, to one in 14 deaths. Barnes also found that those dying of heart attacks, had evidence that they had had tuberculosis in their lungs. He then realized that hypothyroidism was the cause of both conditions. He also found that deaths from various cancers and emphysema increased 3-fold or more, suggesting to Barnes that hypothyroidism increases the risk of cancer and emphysema, and that treated people with desiccated thyroid might reduce the risk. (In a speech Barnes gave, he noted that cancer deaths in his patients treated with desiccated thyroid were about half the national average in the US) Here is a short audio clip of Dr. Starr talking about this in a speech he gave at a 2007 Orthomolecular Conference. Which of the following organs of the body seems particularly vulnerable to opportunistic infections?
1. lungs
2. skin
3. eyes
4. stomach
Best answer:
Answer by Peach
All of the above. The staph that lives on your skin everyday is only looking for a way in; when it finds it, it’s considered opportunistic and the infection begins. Any organ is susceptible to infection, thus washing the hands is more important than most really believe.

My sister has Cystic Fibrosis, how can I help prevent her from getting infections?
Question by Shelly: My sister has Cystic Fibrosis, how can I help prevent her from getting infections?
My twin sister (we’re fraternal twins) are 17, she has Cystic Fibrosis and recently had a double lung transplant, she’s still in the hospital but will be coming home soon. I know after a lung transplant one can be way more prone to infections. How can we help minimize her chance of getting infections once she’s home? Should I get rid of my pets (cats and a dog)? What are the best things I can do to help keep her in the best condition possible?
Best answer:
Answer by Nurse Lady/ USMC Wifey
Pets and plants need to go. that’s a good place to start. If you keep your pets, she shouldn’t come in contact with them, especially the cat and its litterbox.
Handwashing and keeping EVERYTHING clean are really important. Start the habits now before she comes home.
Good luck!

Q&A: Undiagnosed asthma can cause multiple infections in the lungs?
Question by : Undiagnosed asthma can cause multiple infections in the lungs?
Over the past 3 of 4 years I’ve had bronchitis that almost turned into pneumonia. I get bronchitis about twice a year. Could it be from asthma or just having weak lungs from all the infections?
Best answer:
Answer by joanne
Each bout of bronchitis can leave scarring on your lungs. If your smoke the chance of getting bronchitis more often increases and that is what leaves the damage on your lungs If you don’t smoke the option is the same but to a lesser degree. If you have asthma and bronchitis the scarring of lung tissue increases which in turn leaves you more suspeptable to infections which if not caught early enough can lead to pneumonia.

CONSTANT INFECTIONS, Throat, lung, sinus, uterus Please, help if you know anything?
Question by : CONSTANT INFECTIONS, Throat, lung, sinus, uterus Please, help if you know anything?
I’m in tears. I am desperate for an answer because I know normal people don’t go through what I do. I’m 32. I’ve been suffering from unusual and cruel intense infections for at least a decade and a half. It goes like this; Everyone gets a cold. I get bronchitis then pneumonia if I don’t go on STRONG sometimes INTRAVENOUS antibiotics within often days of acquiring illness that everyone else recovers from. Repeat scenareo with a dozen extremely severe strep throat bouts that get me to 104.5 fever within 2 days, or less, and now sinus infections. I have had my tonsils removed, then it moved to my sinuses. I have also near died 3x by near bleeding to death after two miscarriages and then the birth of my only son- a miracle baby that had complications. (so did I.) I have been tested several times, recently and repeatedly through the years for mono, HIV/AIDS, white blood cell count, all that. I eat decent. I am reasonably active. When all my friends were experiencing young life and going to college I spent it battling severe infections. I have been battling a horrible sinus infection since June (6 months) recently and I’m also bleeding from the uterus now for 2 months. I have been on 5? rounds of antibiotics, one for 3 weeks. It just comes back. Now I have the sinus infection and a bronchial infection coming on. I know because I’ve been through it 100 times. I’ve now missed over a week of work and had an on and off fever for 6 weeks. Please, help. Dr’s are puzzled. I’m adopted so I don’t know my family history. I take a fantastic multivitamin- a prenatal. I take vitamin c. I am not allergic to anything, I’ve been tested. I’ve also had several “undiagnosed” weird issues like very strange ovarian cysts that resolved themselves, and both my hips I cannot lie on at night as my legs fall asleep- even when I’m not heavy. The latter is a typical condition of an elderly male, and is super rare on both sides. I’ve also had double carpal tunnel surgery. Please help, do you know anyone like this? Many drs, especially my recent gyno suspects a systematic issue. I have seen an infectious disease dr with no results recently. My throat and glands are constantly swollen as I’m always feeling sick and fighting something. When I travel, I almost always end up in the hospital with a horrible infection of the lungs, throat or sinus within a couple days, making me trapped in my home. Please… help
the hospital dosen’t take me seriously unless I’m spiking a horrible fever. The issue is that it keeps coming back, all of it, over and over and over, severe- for years. I have seen my primary 2x in the last week.

Cystic Fibrosis? how often do you get lung infections?
Question by : Cystic Fibrosis? how often do you get lung infections?
would you get pneumonia alot more the twice a year
Best answer:
Answer by THX3andMe
I have two children with Cystic Fibrosis. The number of lung infections vary significantly from person to person. Just like some people catch everything and some people never get sick. My kids fight lung infections most of the year and mainly with antibiotics at home. When that doesn’t work, they have to go into the hospital for i.v. therapy. My daughter didn’t have to go into the hospital for the first time until 9 years after diagnosis. My son had to go in 6 months after diagnosis, again about 2 1/2 years later and then not for about 8 years. Now they go in 1-2 times a year on average. But I had friends online that had to go in the hospital every 3 months on average. Too many things affect each person with CF – like which mutation do they have? or how susceptible to infection are they? How compliant are they with their daily meds and treatments? Also, you need to know this is a progressive disease with no cure – yet. Sorry – I hope this helps…
What do you think? Answer below!

Avoid Cancer, Infections and Immunodeficiencies With Antioxidants
Avoid Cancer, Infections and Immunodeficiencies With Antioxidants
Article by Dianne M. Buxton
A link for the brave – extremely clinical document discussing enzymes, antioxidants, and a combination of both folk medicine and modern research reports on the use of Cycas circinalis, Morinda citrifolia (the noni plant), Bridelia penangiana, Tridax Procumbens, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Hypericum papuanun…” showed antibacterial activity”.
http://www.chinaphar.com/1671-4083/23/1127.htm
This report states that scopoletin, a health promotor in Noni, inhibits the activity of E coli, commonly associated with recent outbreaks resulting in hundreds of serious infections and even death. Another section reports that a “compound isolated from Noni roots named 1-methoxy-2-formyl-3-hydroxyanthraquinone suppressed the cytopathic effect of HIV infected MT-4 cells, without inhibiting cell growth[45]“.
About a thousand words later we read that “The synergistic effects of TNJ (Tahitian Noni Juice) with known anticancer drugs have been found”. This long section relates that specifically, Tahitian Noni Juice enhances anticancer drugs.
Back to the “synergy” activity…..”No single food or food substances can protect you against cancer, but the right combination of foods a predominantly plant-based diet can. Evidence is mounting that the minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals in many plant foods interact to provide extra cancer protection. This concept is called synergy.” From the American Institute For Cancer Research home page.
“Both grapes and grape juice are rich sources of resveratrol, a specific type of natural plant chemical that belongs to a much larger group of plant chemicals called polyphenols. The skin of the grape contains the most resveratrol, and red and purple grapes contain significantly more resveratrol than green grapes. Grape jam and raisins contain much smaller amounts of this phytochemical. Wine also contains resveratrol, but alcohol has been consistently associated with increased risk for breast cancer and several other types of cancer, so wine is not a recommended source.
Several studies have found polyphenols in general and resveratrol in particular to possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Resveratrol has been able to prevent the kind of damage known to trigger the cancer process in cell, tissue and animal models.
Resveratrol has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells and inhibit the formation of tumors in lymph, liver, stomach and breast cells. Resveratrol has also triggered the death of leukemic and colon cancer tumors.
In one series of studies, resveratrol blocked the development of skin, breast and leukemia cancers at all three stages of the disease (initiation, promotion and progression.)”
From a diet section, the American Institute For Cancer Research. Also from the diet section:
“Blueberries contain a family of phenolic compounds called anthocyanosides, which seem to be among the most potent antioxidants yet discovered.” – American Institute for Cancer Research
Tahitian Noni Juice is a combination of noni juice, blueberry juice and Concord grape juice. A powerful synergistic combination. Traditionally noni juice has been used for infections, broken bones, and many kinds of “wasting” diseases, in tropical folk medicine. It has now entered the modern world. Research has been led by Tahition Noni International, and I’m saying that because their research is sited on most of the competitors’ web sites.
A common criticism of Tahitian Noni Juice is that is it not “pure”, and that it is “diluted” with other fruit juices. Pure noni juice is available in other brands if you specifically do not want the synergy described above. I did notice several brands of noni juice that had undefined amounts of other unnamed fruit juices in them, and the content of noni was not specified. There are many brands to choose from – but, as I said, the definitive and ongoing research that I could find was done with Tahitian Noni Juice. For more information go to http://www.tahitiannoni.com/dbuxton.
Other sources of antioxidants come in green chlorophyll-rich vegetables, beta-carotene rich fruits and vegetables, and many “green food” mixtures which can augment the daily diet.

Lung infections, been put on antibiotics and phlegm medication, its getting worst?
Question by Sally Kipfer: Lung infections, been put on antibiotics and phlegm medication, its getting worst?
Let me re-phrase that, its not getting worst. Well, kinda. Few weeks ago I had a lung infection and was put on antibiotics. I healed kinda slowly and yes I did finish all 5 tablets. Two weeks later I went back, which was two days ago, cause I still felt a little tight chest sensation and the doctor said my airway was completely healthy and prescribed me some phlegm medicine. I’ve been taking it for 2 days now, after the first course yesterday, I felt like I wanna cough, but the phlegm just won’t come up. This morning, I woke up with a sore throat? I’m not sure. Its very deep down my throat, the ones I don’t think i’ve ever had. It doesn’t really sore, it just feels….feels like im supposed to cough but it doesn’t itch. Can someone help me? Is this normal? I’ve been continuously sick since June and i’m so tired of being sick. Help please?!
And if this helps, i’m 14. Mom says I don’t have asthma.

Treating Respiratory Infections in Rats
Treating Respiratory Infections in Rats
Article by Catherine Smith
Unfortunately our ratty friends are rather prone to respiratory diseases and Mycoplasma Pulmonis (MP) is the most prevalent one. Symptoms of MPLaboured breathing, chattering, weight loss, sneezing, sniffling, squinting, rough hair, Porphyrin staining (red staining) around nose and eyes. In more severe cases your rat may have pneumonia, infertility, miscarriage and death.MP can also cause an inner ear infection, so watch out for head tilting in your rat.Prevention of MPYour rat will be more susceptible to MP if he is stressed. Try to keep his life as stress free as possible by keeping him stimulated (see toys and games page) and keeping his home clean.Pollutants and exposure to ammonia and faecal material (pooh) will also make your rat more susceptible to MP. Keep you rat in a clean, uncrowded and well-ventilated cage with clean and safe bedding. Do not use shavings, as these will aggravate MP and may cause other diseases too. If you get a new rat keep them in a separate cage, in a separate room from your other rats for two weeks. This is a quarantine period. As MP can spread to other rats easily. What is Mycoplasma Pulmonis? Are you ready for the science bit?Mycoplasma is a PPLO (pleuropneumonia-like organism). It is different from other forms of bacteria, as it doesn’t have a cell wall (this is important to remember when treating it). There are 95 types of Mycoplasma, but rats get the kind called Mycoplasma pulmonis (MP). Mycoplasma is the organism genus and pulmonis is the organism species. MP is carried in the upper respiratory system. It causes a blistering effect on the surface of the lungs and can cause secondary infection. However genital mycoplasmosis is common in female rats and although they do not always have an infection they will have reduced fertility. MP is very fragile outside of the host (your rat) and it is very susceptible to heat, detergents and disinfectants. This means that washing your hands with hot water will kill MP. People can’t catch MP, but we can carry it on our clothes and skin for short periods of time. Mycoplasmas live in respiratory passages and lungs, so if we sneeze we could transmit it to our rats. MP can infect an entire rat colony as they transmit it by sneezing, grooming and sexual contact.Although MP is very delicate and has a slow rate of growth, once it takes root in a rats system it can be difficult to get rid of. MP mimics your rats antigens fooling your rat’s system into ignoring the invading organism. Rats can be more susceptible to other respiratory diseases once they have MP, as it compromises the integrity of the lung wall.Treating MPNot all antibiotics work on MP. This is because some antibiotics attack the invading organisms cell wall and remember MP does not have a cell wall, so these antibiotics will be useless. You must use the correct antibiotics as soon as possible. Remember there are other pathogens that effect rats, so make sure it is MP before you begin treatment. Good antibiotics to use are:Doxycycline combined with Baytril. This should be given in an oral form using a syringe, or dropped in your rat’s favourite liquid food (Ginger loves soy milk). Give your rat 2.5mg/pound (make sure you get an accurate weight of your rat using electronic scales). Give this twice a day for 14-30 days. Aminophylline can be used if your rat has pneumonia to help it breathe more easily. Give 2.5-5mg/pound two times a day.Prednisone can reduce inflammation, and can be used with other antibiotics. In the advanced stages of MP this will allow your rat to live more comfortably. Give 0.25-1mg/pound once a day. Only ever use this for a few days at a time, unless your rat is dying, in which case keep it up until he passes. Make sure your rat is getting enough fluids. You may wish to use a syringe, or eyedropper to give water to your rat by hand. If your rat is not eating properly use a vitamin and calorie supplement, such as Nutrigel. This tastes nice, so your rat should take it easily.

Is Nasonex making me more susceptible to viral infections?
Question by Kaoru: Is Nasonex making me more susceptible to viral infections?
I was put on Nasonex in December to stop polyps that were about to form. It really helped me out. However January 3rd I caught the flu and had it into Feb (w/2 sinus infections and lung/ear problems). Now it’s the end of Feb and I have a throat infection & am coughing up yellow mucus. Allergist put me on Avelox for 5 days. Why am I getting so sick!? I have only been healthy 2 days this entire year. Then I saw Nasonex increases your risk for viral infection. Could this be the reason I am consistently catching virus after virus? I normally am not very healthy as I frequently am sick with something, but I certainly am not normally this consistently sick!

Absolutely! Did you read the warnings on the package? This stuff will dry out your upper respiratory system causing lesions in the sinus cavities. Infection can set in easily after that. To improve your health, take a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day to develop immunity to all the air born irritants around you-like dust, pollen, mold, pet dander, etc. It will also help control cold and flu symptoms. You also need to exercise to get your blood circulating. This will clean out your cells and flush the circulatory system. Start taking multivitamins and, if you feel something coming on, take 2 echinacea 4 times a day for a couple of days. This will boost your immune system even more.
