Why isn’t our government spending more money on cancer research?
Question by Megara: Why isn’t our government spending more money on cancer research?
We have trillions of dollars per day going into the war in Iraq, supposedly to “fight terrorism.”
Cancer kills more Americans per month than terrorism kills per decade.
Why are we spending so little tax money on cancer research?
Cookie: How do you know it’s “an awful lot” if you have to ask how much we’re spending?
Justine: Why don’t YOU get a job and pay for the war?
Pfo: Great. Ask for donations from those who are in favor of the war, give the money to the government and let it manage the military. Excellent solution. Thank you for suggesting it.

EDIT: SO SORRY!!!!!!! Let me re-phrase. I would imagine it is an awful lot. Sounds like you dont know either so why make the accusation?
ADD: I dont buy the argument that cures arent being put out there for the purpose of profits. Cancer effects everybody. What good are profits if you and your loved ones are dying?

Q&A: Why would many employees sue their work place if what they are claiming isn’t true?
Question by One of a few left: Why would many employees sue their work place if what they are claiming isn’t true?
A place I used to work is being sued, for mold, mildew, asbestos, and numerous other toxicins, in the walls and air of the building according to more than 15 employees…the management there says that these substances are not in the building…but a toxocologist came in and found these substances…the building is still open for more people to work in, and thousands of people come in and out of it a day…
I worked here half a year, before I lost my job…When I worked here I noticed foul smells in the hallways where I was walking…also some hazards where people could trip and fall, and the management doesn’t do much about it, just looked the other way.
I haven’t gotten sick from working here from what I’ve seen, but some of my friends says I should have my lungs checked out to see if those toxicins have made their way in my body…right now it looks like a million dollar lawsuit…with many claiming their respiratory and pulmonary organs will be affected for life with them needing long term care for life…
If you have more than 15 people suing about this, do you think that they’d all be telling the truth
well that is what one person noted…that it could be millions of dollars…may not be…
Best answer:
Answer by David S
They may be telling the truth as they understand it, but they may not be correct about either the presence of toxins, the type or amount of toxins they have been exposed to, or the health affects of the alleged toxins. Proving that the toxins are present will be the burden of the plaintiffs, and just the first hurdle they must jump. It will challenged by defense attorneys, who will present their own expert witnesses in the field of toxicology. They must also show by a preponderance of the evidence that the alleged toxins have damaged their health, another difficult hurdle. They will have to provide medical experts as witnesses who will back up their claims of respiratory and pulmonary damage and the need for lifetime care. All of us hope that legitimate claims are revealed and made right, but it’s difficult to prove and expensive to attempt.

Question by raindrop: if marijuana is so bad for the lungs why isn’t this all over the news?
The hippies of the 60s and 70s who smoked a great deal of cannabis should now be showing signs of cancer, but they are not. There is no evidence at all showing that marijuana is linked to lung cancer. it is safer than alcohol and ciggerettes by far. Why is it illegal when it is not a dangerous drug but one of the safest??
no one has ever died from marijuana overdose.thousands have died from government approved ciggerettes and alcohol.

Why isn’t this kind of information made public?
Question by impossble_dream: Why isn’t this kind of information made public?
Please read this artical before answering http://www.forces.org/evidence/evid/therap.htm
As a smoker, Ive had rights taken away from me because smoking “might” cause lung cancer or emphisima but its health benefits (listed in linked artical) are rarely ever spoken of. It has had some press about how smoking may protect against Parkinsons Disease and Altzheimers, so why wouldnt the government and FDA want everyone to know this as well as all the other benefits? Personally, to me lung cancer isn’t nearly as scary as Altzheimers, and I should be able to choose to protect myself against it without being shunned by the rest of the country.
My personal opinion is that people die quicker from cancer than they do from Parkinsons and Althiemers and the FDA would rather you have these diseases so you can pay much more money for treatment. Why else would the public not be made aware of these findings?
I asked the artical be READ before answering.. THESE studies were done on Smokers vs non-smokers not “nicotine suppliments” and as to the truely niave one… getting cancer from smoking is not a definite, as Im sure you know a lot of old people that smoke and don’t have cancer as everyone else does. Most people die horribly so really your answer is lame.

Why isn’t alcohol illegal?
Question by : Why isn’t alcohol illegal?
Why is alcohol legal, and marijuana not? Marijuana kills a whole shit load of 0 people every year, while alcohol kills over 80,000 people. 5% of all deaths from diseases of the circulatory system are attributed to alcohol.
15% of all deaths from diseases of the respiratory system are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all deaths from accidents caused by fire and flames are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all accidental drownings are attributed to alcohol.
30% of all suicides are attributed to alcohol.
40% of all deaths due to accidental falls are attributed to alcohol.
45% of all deaths in automobile accidents are attributed to alcohol.
60% of all homicides are attributed to alcohol.
And I shit you not those are real statistics. While marijuana holds nothing. Now don’t give me that crap about “I don’t want to see stupid stoners walking down the street blowing pot smoke everywhere!” Well sir I don’t want to see a drunk walking down the street harassing women. And I thought this was America with a little something I like to call “Freedom of choice” since when did the government make start making personal choices for us? wtf.
For you who are wondering, Marijuana is not a drug, it’s a plant… Yes it does contain THC the main ingredient in marijuana, BUT little known fact is we have a little something in our brains called THC resp tors that take in THC and activate dormant brain cells, and in long term use can improve ones IQ depending on the persons personality. NOW what I also want to get across, you know how marijuana is illegal because of THC? Well when the pharmaceuticals got wind of the benefits of THC they were all over it, and produced a pill that had THC in it! No freaking joke! They marketed this pill under the name Marinol in which the active ingredient is… You guessed it. THC! and is widely available through prescription. So I would like one of you to tell me why I can’t use the natural producer of THC but I can go to the drug store and grab a factory made pill with THC? Huh didn’t think so. Now you can go run to the pharms and bitch at them, and let us stoners happily smoke our PLANT and be pe

Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn’t there equal support for prostate cancer ?
Question by Mr. Answer: Prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. But why isn’t there equal support for prostate cancer ?
Breast Cancer out paced prostate cancer research $ 548mill to $ 306 mill according to NCI(National Cancer Institute). Even though there are more diagnoses Prostate Cancer than Breast Cancer by 230,110 new cases to 215,990( www.cancer.org/downloads/MED/Page4.pdf). There fundraisers for breast cancer like the pink ribbon fundraiser which is great but where is the ribbon for prostate cancer ? There are telethons for breast cancer, 10k runs for breast cancer, collection on airline flights for breast cancer. There isn’t equal support for prostate cancer even though prostate is diagnosed more than breast cancer. Why ?Why do we care more about women than men? Does anybody find this disturbing ?

Q&A: My mother smokes, she had breast cancer before. Isn’t she more likely to get cancer from smoking then?
Question by Vintage V: My mother smokes, she had breast cancer before. Isn’t she more likely to get cancer from smoking then?
She claims that she is trying, but she will sometimes argue that the two cancers (lung and breast) aren’t related at all, and the fact that she had breast cancer before won’t make her risks any higher than any other smoker.
I disagree with that but I would like to find some statistic or something that I can show her.
Best answer:
Answer by Memere RN/BA
Please make sure your mom reads this. The 2 are not related huh?? Well my sister-in-law never smoked, however she developed breast cancer. She ignored the cancer at first for reason not important right now. Anyway, she had a mastectomy. 5 yrs later, she developed lung cancer. When they biopsied the tumor in her lungs, it contained breast cancer cells. Don’t tell me they are not related. All cancers are related. All cancer can go somewhere else and cause you harm. Now she never smoked, your mother smokes. That doesn’t mean she will get breast cancer again, but I can tell you for myself, I had breast cancer, was a heavy smoker, (not anymore though) and then I had a second mastectomy less than a year later. It only takes one rogue cell to break away and run somewhere else to do it’s dirty work and cause cancer elsewhere. You don’t need statistic for this. I’m giving you what my sister in law went through. She’s dead now She died at 34 from lung cancer caused by breast cancer. FACT,
Before your mom quits, she has to want to quit and all the nagging in the world won’t make her quit, If anything, it will make her angry at you for nagging. Chantix is what I was prescribed for smoking and it worked. Yet, I really felt it was time to quit and I really wanted to. I’m so happy I did. Good luck and God bless.
ADD Denise, I thought the same thing too. It was my sister-in-laws Dr who told me that. I had an argument with him telling him just what you said, and he told me “I’m an Oncologist. I don’t see MD after your name.” So I dropped it. I totally agree, but I also have to say what the Oncologist told me.

If you look at the history of criminalizing drugs, mainly Pot, it’s because of Tobacco Corporations realizing that it was a strong competitor and they wanted to get rid of it.
After that, it was n the interest of not looking like fools to keep it illegal.

It is the injection of bacteria into your bloodstream. Back in the old days, they thought a high fever killed cancer cells if it didn’t kill you first. Modern times use immunotherapy in a much safer state… Some it works on, some it doesn’t.

Q&A: Isn’t it time we put an end to the Socialist Fire Departments?
Question by : Isn’t it time we put an end to the Socialist Fire Departments?
As long as we are worried about preventing healthcare reform, shouldn’t we also focus on the other socialist groups that already protect us as well? Let’s put an end to these socialists!
Let’s make America look like a free country after the image of Somalia, with no governement, and no socialist programs!!!
Police Department… your next!
From the Facebook group leading this effort -
FACT: Most Americans never use the socialized services of the fire department. The Obama administration has been very clear about keeping the status quo when it comes to taxpayer-funded fire departments.
It is time to open the fire department up to private industry. We have the best fire departments in the world in the US, but that doesn’t mean that anyone (even non-US citizens) should be able to dial up and have fires put out, etc. There are private companies (Halliburtion, Etc.) who could step in tomorrow and take over every fire department in America and charge the consumer directly.
This is AMERICA. NO FREE FIRE SAFETY.
“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in asbestos and carrying a fire hose.”
Madeleine – The Fire Dept helps protect our homes from burning, and healthcare serves to help protect our bodies. Are you saying this is not the case?
If a fire gets out of control it can affect all of us. If illness gets out of control, it can affect all of us.
Seems pretty clear to me, that these are very similar. How else could one view this?
Fug – I agree these are all necessary, further “volunteer.” Why is it so hard for some to see that healthcare is also necessary, and that there are good reasons behind having a public option? Without all of the nonsense of death panels, euthanasia, “socialism,” or “communism,” etc…?
consrats – Police & Fire are paid for from money from the community. ie Taxes. If you don’t get this, perhaps you will when you get a job, pay your taxes, and start doing your part to contribute to the society we have in America. Or perhaps you’ll just join the tea-bagger nuts, whine about it and actively work to eliminate the social programs that our forefathers fought and died for.

Q&A: Isn’t it fruitless to feed hungry children in poor, underdeveloped countries?
Question by : Isn’t it fruitless to feed hungry children in poor, underdeveloped countries?
. why do we support feeding them when it makes more sense to promote?
BIRTH CONTROL!!!!!!!!!!!
as it is child fund operates by providing (assuming of course that it is not a scam) food, water, and education to children in poor, overpopulated, malnourished countries. Lets think about this with an analogy, if a cigarette smoker develops lung cancer as a result of his years of smoking, what does she have to do?-> get surgery or radiation to remove the cancer. Ok well problem solved right? NO not if she continues to smoke after she gets the surgery or radiation therapy, because she may get cancer yet again. (p.s. if you don’t like this analogy, just use your head and come up with any one of the hundreds of other possible ones that exist) The correlation between the smoker and the hungry children is that feeding the child is like having the surgery to remove the cancer and giving birth in an overpopulated, malnourished country is like continuing to smoke after having the surgery.
what does all of this mean? it means that the problem will never be solved by programs like ChildFund/ the problem will never be solved by simply feeding hungry mouths, because the problem is not hungry mouths. THE PROBLEM IS TOO MANY MOUTHS. Therefore, the logical solution is to limit the amount of mouths being produced.(i.e. birth control)
Any rational, intelligent person who is not blinded by sympathy for the “hungry mouths” can see that this is a cyclical problem that will never end until these OVERPOPULATED, malnourished, countries learn to control their population through birth control. when the birth rate decreases, the number of mouths to feed will decrease, which will increase the amount of food available to spread around, which will decrease starvatio

You are right in the sense that a nation should be able to feed itself or import food and not have it add to a trade deficit.
High population relative to economic growth is certainly the crux of the problem.
That said if the population is growing fast people need to have nourishment.
If people can leave the country they do so and send home money to help their family.
There is the question of whether food aid inhibits the regional agricultural economy. It may but there may be no other solution in the short run.

Why isn’t there an all cancer awareness?
Question by : Why isn’t there an all cancer awareness?
If you notice around just about everywhere, just about all you see as far as ‘cancer awareness’ is breast cancer awareness. I completely understand that breast cancer is extremely serious and very deadly, but I notice that bumper stickers, t-shirts, license plates, etc. tend to only support a cure for breast cancer instead of ALL cancers. Lung (obviously most can be avoided because of smoking), colon, pancreatic, prostate… all of these cancers are very deadly and need a cure supported too.
Why is not major awareness for all cancer instead of just one type of cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by Dope Sleeper
Different types of cancer require different types of treatment and research. The different research groups compete among themselves for research dollars. A lot of the research dollars come through donation, and the way to get donations is by raising awareness. I don’t know why breast cancer awareness is more visible than other awareness groups.
