Nightly, sometimes when I take a daytime nap (it’s mostly at night), as I lay down, I’ll begin to have a horrible time breathing. I used to lay on my stomach to sleep, but lately, doing that nearly kills me. So I sleep on my sides, which is little better. And I try on my back, same as my side. I sometimes have to gasp for air, and my lungs feel swollen and achy throughout the night.
I’ve always had horrible asthma, and I’ve gone to the doctors for similar problems before, and have horribly weak lungs. Also lived in a house for a year with horrible black mold, which I’m told got into my lungs. But I have no idea what could cause this pain and hard time to happen only when I’m laying down. It feels like I have a small weight laying on them. I have an appointment tomorrow, but am curious about what to expect.
I have no other health problem, am all around healthy other than my lungs. I’m also 16 years old. And this may not have a link to it, but I do have large breasts despite being built small, so I think that’s what makes it hard to lay on my back and stomach.
Like I said, just curious what to expect.

You are probably being affected by bad air, like dust, I don’t think it is very serious, the reason you are tired is that you are not getting enough oxygen during the day and breathing problems are always worse when we lay down. If it gets bad tonight, try to sleep with a few extra pillow propped up behind you. oh and don’t drink cold cows milk as this caused mucus (yuck) making it harder to breath. good luck with the doctor and remember if you feel that your doctor is behaving a little casual about this then exaggerate a little.

hard telling. i tore off an asbestos roof about 10 yrs ago with no protection (i was young, dumb and working for a shady contractor), took about 3 days and i’m still fine. was there a bunch of dust in the air from the broken tiles?

I didn’t know there was a “max dose” until my treatment was complete. I received the max dose of radiation and it was concentrated in my pelvis for cervical cancer and nodes, but it also extended all the way up to my armpits because there were lymph nodes higher too and they were worried it had microscopically spread even higher, they were playing it safe they said by going higher than shown just to make sure nothing was missed. Now I am anxiously awaiting another PET scan in a week which will show if theres any activity, last scan showed a tiny speck on the cervix itself and if its still there I was told surgery is the only option. I asked why I couldn’t have radiation for just that spot and I was told that I can never have radiation again because I received the max dose, any more is toxic apparantly?
Can someone please explain this a little better?
I am worried, because now I am at increased risk for other cancers as well since I already had CC and I had radiation which increases risk. If I found cancer say, breast cancer, could I be treated with radiation for it? I am really worried that the over-compensation in the radiation may have cost me the chance to ever have radiation again if I need it. I am trying to remain calm about it but I think this is something that should have been discussed with me prior to giving me the max dose so I would understand the risks and benefits of getting the max dose and have some input on the decision making process.

Radiation is a very dangerous substance to humans. It corrupts us on the cellular level. Radiation therapy works because cancer cells are more susceptible to radiation. I think it was the right choice to use the maximum radiation in the beginning. That way you remove as much as the cancer as possible, but hopefully all of it.

Okay, so I’ve been feeling really down lately. I recently broke my leg, ankle, and foot, and am now in a full leg cast after having pins put in. I’m getting a walking boot in a couple of weeks, but right now I’m stuck inside almost 24/7. Maybe that may contribute to part of the problem, but I’m not so sure. Today I did get out for a while; my straightleg cast didn’t stop me from wanting to go to the Boxing Day blowout sale at the mall! Anyways, I got a new iPod for Christmas, and everytime the songs Old School by Hedley, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, or Forever Young by Alphaville, I find I’m always trying to hold back tears. Here’s the thing. Old School and Don’t Stop Believin’ always seem to make me think of my last year’s class. Up until grade 7, we were always so close to eachother. We laughed and cried together and we were pretty much family. We had decided that Don’t Stop Believin’ was going to be “our song” and it really was. It was played when my friend left our school. He told me that that had been the first time he ever cried in front of anyone. Then at our assembly on the last day of school before break this year, it was played and I had tears in my eyes. It made me remember how we used to be so close and that changes in grade 8 and highschool had ruined our bond. The highschool in our town had closed down, and we were all sent to maybe 5 different highschools in the area. Some of the people that I was really close to, it feels like I don’t even know them anymore that’s how much everything’s changed. Old School also reminds me of the good times we shared, and how now, they’re only memories. And Forever Young reminds me of another topic altogether, but still as upsetting, if not more. It reminds me of how I always dreamed of living forever when I was a little kid. I didn’t realize how much I wanted everyone to be able to live forever until 4 months and 1 day ago. I didn’t realize it until one of my friends died because of complications with cystic fibrosis. When the doctors told everyone she was dying, she only had a matter of days to live, and she died three or four days later. She lived far away, and I didn’t get to say goodbye. She didn’t live her full life. And since she missed so much school as a child as she was always so sick, she was always in a grade younger than me even though she was the same age. She never even got to graduate elementary school, and she never seemed happy. I know it may be vain wishing her back, but somedays I don’t understand why she had to go less than halfway through her life. And then less than three months after her death, my grandma had a mini-stroke but she’s okay now, and one of my great uncles died from a stroke(Nov. 5). On Nov. 7, my friend’s older brother died after sustaining a collapsed lung. He had been fighting cancer for years, and he was just too weak to handle it. I didn’t know him personally, but a lot of people in my community were affected greatly by his death. Ten days later, on Nov. 17, another one of my great uncles died from a reason that no one ever told me. And on top of that, I’ve been getting bullied at school (I may be in highschool, but everyone knows it does still hurt) I’m concerned about this all because in grade 6, 7, and 8, I went through a depressive state and I had to see a counsellor in grade 6 and 8, I had to see a psychiatrist in grade 6 because I wanted to kill myself the bullying was so bad, and in grade 8, I resorted to cutting because it felt like I was in control of something, and because being able to play body contact football with all guys, I could take physical pain better than emotional. I don’t want to tell anyone about anything because I want to avoid everything. The bullying has died down a lot since the beginning of school, but there’s still an occasional conflict. I’ve told most of my friends about how I used to cut, and none have judged me so far, but I haven’t yet told my boyfriend (4 months) and I feel like I’m hiding something from him. In a way I guess I am. What can I do to make these feelings all fade from my memories slowly? I don’t want to erase people and events from my memory. I just want to be able to numb them from my memory because I’ve had flashbacks about some things. My grandpa was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. He was said not to have very much time left, and was down to his final months. With treatment however, his symptoms got better. They gave him a few years to live.
During the last year or so he has desperately tried to get closer to me.He was always inventing some new reason for me to come visit him (he lives only a mile away). I visited him every 2-3 weeks to do some sort of chore for him around the house, or eat dinner with him. Just two weeks ago, he asked for a hug, and I hugged him. Twice. I could tell it really meant something to him.
Just now I was informed the doctors discovered a new cancer that has spread all over his body, including his lungs. He now has a few weeks, or maybe even days, to live.
But the worst part of it is that I don’t feel a damn thing. I don’t feel sad, happy, remorseful, joyous, or anything at all. I’m empty. Blank. Nada.
What’s wrong with me?

Hello, I’ve had sinus infection/cold-like symptoms for about two months, and I am not getting better. For the first two or so weeks, I assumed I had a cold, and then got better, and got another cold. My mom thinks it’s my allergies, but I have never had allergy symptoms like this in my life other than hay fever in the spring. This is like a super-cold, I feel so lethargic and my nose keeps running and I just feel rotten. I am allergic to cats and dust (I have 3 cats) but I take 2 antihistamines daily and it has never been much of an issue unless i sleep with them in my face or something then it might irritate my breathing because I have asthma, but why would it just start giving me horrible symptoms at random NOW? It goes away for about 3-6 days, and then at random I will be sniffling and sneezing and totally miserable within like 30 minutes I’ll go from being completely fine to full-blown cold. Then it lasts for about 4-5 days and I’m fine again. This cycle has been repeated about 5 times. I went to the doctor and he prescribed me antibiotics (Sulfamethoxazole) for a sinus infection, which is what he said it sounds like I have. I haven’t been sleeping well at all, my nose is so irritated and I can’t stop sniffling all night my nose stays completely plugged. So of course every morning I wake up with a horribly raw throat from breating through my mouth while I’m asleep. To top it off, I got my two upper wisdom teeth pulled this morning. I canceled my original appointment for one week ago because my symptoms had come back in full the night before my appointment, and the same thing happened last night before my wisdom teeth appointment this morning, but I went. The oral surgeon made me use Afrin in my nose before we started so I’d be able to breathe through my nose better, but I feel way worse than before I had my teeth removed. It could be a coincidence and my symptoms are just escalating like they always do, but hat nose spray irritated my nose very badly. My eyes are red and I feel so icky. What is this?! Is it a really bad sinus infection, a remarkably long series of colds, or WHAT! How do I get better?? I’m so stressed because I feel so awful while my symptoms attack, and I can’t get any rest because it’s so hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. I’m prescribed percocet for my teeth (or lack there of)–will those help my sleep at all? But seriously, what is with this never-ending cold??! I’ve been taking vitamin C and a multivitamin and drinking a lot of liquids (water and cranberry juice) as well as Mucinex to try and clear out my sinuses and lungs. What else can I do????

This actually sounds like something serious. The first thing that comes to mind is Epstein Barr virus, the same virus that causes “mono.” This should go away on its own but you need to have some routine blood work done to rule out other more serious things, like certain types of blood disorders such as leukemia or aplastic anemia. Tell your doctor that you want a CBC with a differential performed and you want your blood tested for “heterophil antibodies.” In addition tell him you want a monospot test.
If your doctor continues to act like a jacka$ s and dismisses you, tell him you want a referral to an infectious disease specialist.

This sharp pain can be an indication of several possibilities such as an irritated or pinched nerve (some examples) or a condition called costochondritis which is an inflammation of the cartilage around the ribcage (another example only).
The only way to know for sure what’s going on is to see your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think could be going on.

It’s probably best to leave it undisturbed. Removing it will be extremely expensive, and releases it into the air. Leave it alone, and it’s probably never going to be in contact with you.

My mom passed away in february and I’m having such a hard time with it. She was diagnosed with lung cancer about 10 months ago and she fought so hard, but unfortunately it just became to hard for her. I think this is extremly hard for me because I was her care taker. When my mom 1st got sick she immediately moved in with me. It was my honor to care for her and I wanted my 2yr old son to be around her, I believed she held on for as long as she did because of him. my mom passed away in my home holding my hand. I miss her so much, I feel so alone. I live in a family of all boys father, 2 brothers, husband and son. I love my moms family but they are all in england so its not easy because they wish they were there to hug me but they are so far away. I don’t know what to do, I still feel like this is not real. I want her to come back to me so bad. I MISS MY BEST FRIEND. Please does anyone have advice or any tips on how to get through my day with out constantly wanting to cry?

I only wish there were words that could bring you comfort right now and the pain of losing your mother is beyond any words can describe.
I moved to the other side of the country over a year and a half ago, something told me that the last time I kissed my mother, it WOULD be my last time. She was already sick, but I had no idea she had cancer, neither did she. She kept begging me to come visit within months of moving here and financially I couldn’t. By January she underwent a surgery to remove a kidney, by February she was told she had cancer, by March, she was gone. Two weeks after my birthday, I last spoke to her and told her I would find a way to get there…I did, but I made it there only to say goodbye and have her taken off of life support.
If ever I needed a rock to back me up, or a word of guidance in my life, a kick in the behind, it was Mom. She passed away last year, I had a pet who was killed and no one to call, husband left, deployed and off to war, and no one to lean on. Sisters who I thought would be my strength, depended on me instead.
But in all this hurt….I could clearly hear her voice telling me…”God doesn’t give us more than we can’t handle” and I picked up the pieces and I held it together because life will go on for you. Cry if you need to, yes it’s hard to accept that you can’t pick up the phone to hear their voice. But in our dreams, as Mom would say, if where you’ll always me.
I know your pain…but you’ll make it through. Death is not prejudice, it will get us all. Don’t stop living and believing. My heart goes out to you

dont really have diarreah very often but a soft stool every day. I drink a lot of water cuz I feel dehydrated but urinate normal. I have a good appetite I was checked for HIV 6 months ago and also last week NOTHING. did a full blood check and all minerals in and nutrient levels in blood are normal but that was 5 months ago, did an ultrasound of my stomach and chest and no sign of cancer. Blood check no abnormalities or diabetes? I get dry eyes a lot too, I feel that I’m getting thinner skin and tissues in my arms and face especially. I’m a deep thinker and sometimes have sleep deprivation. I’m 27 years old and I feel like i’m aging rapidly. I Seem to crave salt, sugar and water but I dont have diabetes? , 2 years ago I smoked a pack a day with ease, but I quit because I couldnt breathe very well and even after a year of only smoking one a day, my lungs can barely handle it! I also smoke weed sometimes my tolerance is getting lower and with alcohol also? Anybody with insight??!!

When i was a freshman in college we used to play volleyball in our room knocking the cottage cheese asbestos off of the ceiling. Sometimes the floor would be littered with it. Unfortunately at the time i did not know this was asbestos. We used to do this maybe 3 times a week or so. Id say about half the time our room was ventilated with windows open. I was in this room for 7 months.
So im wondering how concerned should i be about getting lung cancer or Mesothamlimia. Ive read a bunch over the last week that you can get mesothalimia(sry spelling may be wrong) from 1-3 months exposure but theres not figures on how likely you are to get it. Does anyone have any thoughts on my chances of getting Mesothalimia or lung cancer?
