Hey if I had cancer I would go for the proton therapy because of the minimum to no side effects plus the less morbidity. I never even knew they had a new option for radiation treatment.

Radon is a colorless odorless gas found in many homes in New Jersey. Radon is a radioactive gas that naturally exists in the majority of rocks and soils. Normally radon is naturally dispersed throughout the atmosphere. Radon is important in homes because it builds up with in the building structure. It get trapped in the home due to the structure of the roof, walls, and floors. Radon typically enters the home through the lower level by entering through cracks and voids in the basement floor or the foundation wall. Radon can also enter around unsealed pipe penetrations and through drains in the floor. Radon can also be present in water particularly water from private wells.
Radon puts people at risk for developing lung cancer. As radon decays it gives off tiny radioactive particles that can over time damage the cells that make up the lining of the lungs. Long-term exposure to radon gas can lead to lung cancer, the only cancer proven to be linked with radon gas exposures. Individuals who have never smoked make up roughly 3000 lung cancer cases per year in the United States. It has been estimated that 15% of the total lung cancer cases reported in the world are attributable to radon gas exposures. Lung cancer may not occur for many years after exposure to radon. Not every individual will develop lung cancer, but a persons risk of developing lung cancer rises as the level of radon concentration rises in the home.
Testing for radon concentration is the only method to determine what the actual radon concentration is in the home. The indoor radon concentration is affected by the soil and rock composition under and around the home. The access that radon has to the interior of the home also plays a significant role in the radon concentration in the home. In fact houses that are very close together in the same neighborhood may have differing radon concentrations.
There are two types of generally used radon tests. Charcoal canisters are considered a short term radon test and are most widely used in real estate transactions. These tests absorb radon or its products onto the charcoal media inside the canister. The sealed canister is then sent to a laboratory for analysis. The canister is placed in the lowest available living area where Radon gas levels tend to be the highest. Charcoal canisters must be left on-site for a minimum of 48 hours to a maximum of 6 days. This exposure time will vary from test manufacturer to test manufacturer.
Radon monitors utilize a computer and a device called a continuous working level monitor to measure Radon decay products. Be sure that the monitor being used integrates or reads minimally every hour. This will allow you to see any dramatic changes that occurred during the test such as a window being opened.
If the radon levels in the home are at a level of 4 pCi/L (4 picocuries per liter) or higher the Environmental Protection Agency recommends remediation action. About 1 in 14 U.S. homes is estimated to have radon concentrations at or above the EPA action level or higher.
Reducing radon levels in the home has several approaches. The first step would be to seal areas of potential radon entry into the home. Sealing gaps and spaces should not be used alone but in conjunction with other methods as well. The most common method used to lower radon levels is to install a sub slab depressurization system. This system uses a system of pipes installed below the basement floor slab. These suction points are connected to a radon mitigation fan and discharge pipe. This type of system is very Effective because it prevents radon gas from entering the home from below the basement floor. These systems are not very expensive and are very effective at lowering the levels of radon gas in a home.
