Nancy Nichols on “Lake Effect” and Water Pollution

Nancy Nichols drew on her journalistic expertise while interviewing dozens of scientists, doctors, and environmentalists to determine if pollution could have played a role in her sister’s death. While researching Sue’s fatal cancer, she discovered her own: a vicious though treatable form of pancreatic cancer. Doctors and even family urged her to forget causes and concentrate on cures, but Nichols knew that it was relentless questioning that had led to her diagnosis. And that it is questioning—by government as well as individuals—that could save other lives. Lake Effect is the story of her investigation. It reaches back to their childhood in Waukegan, Illinois, an industrial town on Lake Michigan once known for good factory jobs and great fishing. Now Waukegan is famous for its Superfund sites: as one resident put it, asbestos to the north, PCBs to the south.

Council quashes plan to dump asbestos near Bristol’s water supply Lake – Bath & North East Somerset
Plans to dump potentially hazardous waste in Stowey Quarry have been quashed after council officials were told they could face a judicial review. Resident David Elliott told Bath and North East Somerset Council he was prepared to take the fight over the former quarry site to the High Court. Mr Elliot was told the council would now “look very differently at any application considering the evidence”. Campaigners were worried asbestos could leach into nearby Chew Valley Lake. Previously councillors had approved plans for asbestos – which could include the more dangerous blue or brown variety – to be dumped in Stowey Quarry. A meeting of the Liberal Democrat-controlled council on Wednesday said it would now take steps to quash the planning application. A judicial review would have involved a court considering whether the council had exceeded its authority. In a statement the council said it accepted that the site notice and newspaper advert did not wholly comply with Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations. “A member of the public reading the notices would have been unlikely to realise that the proposal was for EIA development and would therefore be unaware of their right to inspect and comment upon the environmental statement at an early stage in the process. ‘New application’ “Correspondence which the council has received since permission was granted indicates that local residents were unaware of the precise nature of the proposal and their right to participate in …

The Old Tallawarra Power Station – by Norman Hodges (Lake Illawarra MAP Project)
MENTOR FILM MAKER: Nick McClaren SYNOPSIS: Tallawarra Power Station was the last of the gentleman’s power stations, but the history of Normans work includes collective action about asbestos exposure and improving safety for workers. SCRIPT: My background was heavy engineering. I started with the railways in Britain on steam locos. So the boilers were like ?5 with asbestos. So it was something we never thought of. Then I was in shipping and worked in shipyards and you had a lot of asbestos. We used to make snowballs with it and throw it around, cause we were just totally ignorant. I started in A Station. I applied for a position there as an Operator. And I had to start at the bottom of the pile, so I was classified as a labourer. After I had done all the training I went up to B Station as a salaried Operator. There was an average of around 550 people working there. Wangi Wangi was the same size. That was built around the same time, about the same period as A Station. They did have stations very similar to that. But they also had a B Station there, which was bigger machines again. When they closed us these two machines were pretty efficient for their age. We also had about five years worth of coal stockpiled on the stack there. Most people used to come down here to use it as a stepping stone, especially the B Station. But the number of people that came down then decided the area, the style of living, the cost of living was that much better that they stayed here. I was …
