Q&A: Is this likely to cause me major health problems in later life? (i.e. cancer, copd, emphysema)?
Question by will s: Is this likely to cause me major health problems in later life? (i.e. cancer, copd, emphysema)?
I’m 16, and i’ve smoked on average about 8 a day for about 8 months. I am now quitting, because I’m a football referee, and I only started smoking when I dislocated my knee, so I couldn’t referee. My knee is better now, and I will be back refereeing in a few weeks
My great granddad died from lung cancer in his 50s, but he smoked 20 a day for years, and health wise, I tend to take after the other side of my family. My granny on his side of the family (his daughter) smoked 20 a day for 40 years (though she never inhaled) and is now nearly 80 and still fit as a fiddle.
There’s a slight history of cancer in the female side of the other side of my family – both my granny and my aunt have had breast cancer.
I just want to know, is this 8 months of idiocy likely to come back and haunt me?

Answer by Ricky D
It might, but don’t let the thought ruin your happiness. I smoked for 30 years and don’t have lung cancer. I have heart attacks, unexplained lumps in many other places, ED that is improving now that I’m off the weed, jaundice, partial amnesia, type 2 diabetes, kidney and gall stones, rapidly deteriorating hearing and vision, impossible bad breath, occasional incontinence in both openings that is getting worse, and gout.

How likely is it that a baby with meconium aspiration will develop lung problems etc. in later life?
Question by : How likely is it that a baby with meconium aspiration will develop lung problems etc. in later life?
Basically, my 6 week old niece Olivia was born with severe meconium aspiration, a syndrome where the baby opens its bowels in the womb causing the lungs to become inflamed, she also suffered with asphyxia and internal hemorrhaging which meant she was coughing up blood also. She had to have a catheter fitted and also had a blood transfusion. She was in the neonatal on a ventilator with nitrates and oxygen for four and a half weeks. She has since made a full recovery and is now at home with her parents, I was just wondering, after such a bad start and all the complications is it likely that she will suffer any other illnesses in the future such a pneumonia or something due to the severity of her aspiration, and how likely is it?

There are studies, indicating that those born with MAS are at a higher risk of having reactive airway disease (lungs that are more sensitive and can possibly lead to an asthmatic condition).
They may be more likely to have wheezing and lung infections during their first year, but lungs can regenerate new air sacs, so the long-term prognosis for their lungs is excellent.
Severely affected babies are at risk for developing chronic lung disease and may also have developmental abnormalities and hearing loss. Babies diagnosed with MAS will be screened at the hospital for hearing problems or neurological damage.
The likelihood? It is hard to determine, because each child is different.
Olivia is very fortunate, this can be a devastating syndrome. She sounds like she is doing well. This is why I do what I do, to watch these sweet “gifts” go home with their parents.

Can popcorn ceilings really give you cancer 20 years later?
Question by : Can popcorn ceilings really give you cancer 20 years later?
Some pieces of my popcorn ceiling fell off while I was hanging something up and I’m very worried that I inhaled some of it. I’m not 100% sure if it has asbestos in it or not, it’s a very old apartment building in san diego.
Am I going to get cancer for inhaling a little bit of it?

Answer by Pro Con
If you don’t know, it’s better to assume there is asbestos in your ceiling. I live in Orange County and it’s definitely been used here.
The CDC in Atlanta Georgia would probably be able to give you a definitive answer as to the dangers of a small amount, but I would guess you have nothing to worry about.
If you ever decide to remove your own acoustic ceiling, be sure to wear a protective mask.

Question by lajamesfl: Can blood be tainted from a healthy donor who later gets cancer?
Okay, I didn’t know how to word this question, so let me explain. In 1992 I was extremely sick and needed a blood transfusion and so my mother who back then was healthy gave me a pint of her blood. Twelve years later my mother is diagnosed with lung cancer and dies 3 years after being diagnosed. Is there a chance I could get cancer because of the blood she gave me years ago?

My husband went in for a simple gallbladder removal but 4 surgerys later it almost cost him his life?
Question by Liz H: My husband went in for a simple gallbladder removal but 4 surgerys later it almost cost him his life?
the liver was nicked and a blood hemotoma grew until it exploded while still healing in the hospital. His blood hemoglobin dropped down to a 4 and was in icu awaiting asecond surgery , after build builders were injected {since we dont accept blood} his blood rose to a 6 and they went in to close the leak. We went home and he ended up in the er screaming because another hemotoma formed and was holding pressure on his lungs so he couldnt breathe well. Then 3rd surgery had to be performed the surgeon almost declined us and said he might die again so go to a university hospital. we tried but the bed wait was too long and he only had 2-3 hours. 3 hour away hopital but they had a helicopter ready. So the surgeon had to perform the 3rd surgery and had hell in icu for days the DR called me on my cell phone to give her orders for pain relief and she told me that shes not obeying his orders..hes home now awaitn 4th surgery for a stiint in small intestine because now bile is leankin from liver

Question by Ribbons: Cancer not shown on X Ray, but shows up on CT scan a week later?
A family member passed from ischemic intestine 6 months ago and I saw his medical records today. A chest x ray showed nothing, but less than a week later a ct scan showed 2 large masses and several smaller ones throughout the lungs. How is this possible? Also, can what’s shown on the CT scan be positively identified as malignancies without further testing?

Q&A: I was looking at 28 days later and I wondered if scientist could create a rage virus?
Question by Craig K: I was looking at 28 days later and I wondered if scientist could create a rage virus?
Couldn’t you create a virus that induced a cancer of the anger region of the brain, or a virus that kills cells in the region of the brain that monitors judgement such as compassion. Also, you could alter the adrenaline levels in the blood by a viral induced cancer of the adrenal gland so the person is on steriods 24 hrs/day. It’s noticeable that people on steroids have an increased sense of rage much like those people in 28 days later. By the way the zombies in 28 days later are not zombies b/c they don’t eat flesh. They are just people pissed off and want to hurt other people, so I’m not looking for answers about cannibals.

Later Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Poor Women: Higher Mortality Rates
Later Diagnosis of Breast Cancer in Poor Women: Higher Mortality Rates
Article by Heather MacGibbon
CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians report for 2011 shows that later detection of breast cancer in poor woman has lead to a higher mortality rate then that of non poor women – who generally receive more frequent screenings.
“In general, progress in reducing breast cancer death rates is being seen across races/ethnicities, socioeconomic status, and across the U.S.,” said Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. “However, not all women have benefited equally. Poor women are now at greater risk for breast cancer death because of less access to screening and better treatments. This continued disparity is impeding real progress against cancer of the breast, and will require renewed efforts to ensure that all women have access to high-quality prevention, detection, and treatment services.”
More highlights from Breast Cancer Statistics as summarized by Science Daily, 2011 and Breast Cancer Facts & Figures 2011-2012 :• Cancer of the breast mortality rates have declined steadily since 1990, with the drop in mortality larger among women under 50 (3.2% per year) than among women 50 and older (2.0% per year).• In 2011, an estimated 230,480 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Excluding cancers of the skin, cancer of the breast is the most common cancer among women in the United States, accounting for nearly 1 in 3 cancers diagnosed.• An estimated 39,520 women are expected to die from the disease in 2011. Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women.• In January 2008 (the latest year for which figures are available), approximately 2.6 million women living in the U.S. had a history of breast cancer, more than half of whom were diagnosed less than 10 years earlier. Most of them were cancer-free, while others still had evidence of cancer and may have been undergoing treatment.• From 2004 to 2008, the average annual female breast cancer incidence rate was highest in non-Hispanic white women (125.4 cases per 100,000 females) and lowest for Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders (84.9). During this time period, cancer of the breast incidence rates were stable among all racial/ethnic groups.• Although overall breast cancer incidence rates are lower in African American than white women, African American women have higher rates of distant stage disease; are more likely to be diagnosed with larger tumors; and are more likely to die from the disease.• From 1998-2007, female breast cancer death rates declined annually by 1.9% in Hispanics/Latinas, 1.8% in non-Hispanic whites, 1.6% in African Americans, and 0.8% in Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders. Death rates have remained unchanged among American Indians/Alaska Natives.• Analyses by county level poverty rates showed that death rates were highest among women residing in affluent areas until the early 1990s, but since that time rates have been higher among women in poorer areas because the decline in death rates began later and was slower among women residing in poor areas compared to those in affluent areas.• Trends in cancer of the breast death rates vary by state. During 1998-2007, death rates declined in 36 states and the District of Columbia, but remained relatively unchanged in the remaining 14 states (Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming). The lack of a decline in these states is likely related to variations in the prevalence and quality of mammography screening, as well as state differences in racial and socioeconomic composition.• Despite much progress in increasing mammography utilization, screening rates continue to be lower in poor women compared to non-poor women. In 2008, 51.4% of poor women ages 40 and older had a screening mammogram in the past 2 years compared to 72.8% of non-poor women.

Q&A: Could I be effected later by the asbestos?
Question by Brandon K: Could I be effected later by the asbestos?
I remember when I was younger I use to pick at the ceiling which is the popcorn kind. I recently learned about how it can cause numerous diseases later in life. Although I’m not sure if the ceiling does contain asbestos I’ve become worried about my health and what might happen.
Although I did pick at the popcorn ceiling all i did was mashed it up and thats about it ? This was when I was about 7 ror 6 and I’m 15 now.

just go relax & sleep.
Asbestosis or mesothelioma[Which are due to asbestos exposure]
occurs only after long exposure to asbestos & not every one exposed to asbestos suffers from these disease.
and more on asbestos dust is more harmful not the solid asbestos at most of the time.
also you are not sure about the presence of asbestos in your ceiling.

Q&A: lung cancer going to kill me LATER?
Question by : lung cancer going to kill me LATER?
so ive ben reading alot about asbestos and silica and dust and long term exposure causing lung disease and death
well, the A/C unit in my part of the house is VERY OLD ,and is SOOOO dusty…alll of te “grilles” ,the white metal bars where the air comes out always has alot of dust around it, espeically under it, and the ac unit closet itself is really dusty, so it leads to think that dust is constantly being blown by the A/C
to make matters worse, i think the duct is made out of abestos
ALSO…i think the duct may pass through the attic which is full of white wool, glass wool, rock wool, or something. the ac duct is right above my bed(and theres a second not far off)
is all that dust abestos(if it is actually asbestos) im breathing in now going to affect me later in life? and kill me? im 17, ive lived in this house for 14 years.
my questions are
-what is this stuff, abestos,what?
-if im 17 now, will it really last into my 80s?
-health risks?
-signigifcance of exposure?
-is there a lung test i can do, to see if i have these pieces?
the house was built in the 1920s or 30s, but obviously it has been redone many times. i do think the A/C duct is asbestos though; wouldnt the dust got blown in my room?

Answer by SHORTY
Homes that were built in the 80′s until now do not have asbestos in them or lead paint even the instillation is different than those from the 70′s and on back.
Don’t worry…your not going to die of lung cancer just yet…unless your smoking.
if your worried about the a/c unit…then clean it out…get a vacuum cleaner and clean it. Wear a mask as you do it if it’s that bad.
Your parents may need to have the a/c unit checked out by a professional so that way then can clean it properly. Your fine…don’t worry…
