Life expectancy of someone with emphysema?
Question by : Life expectancy of someone with emphysema?
My dad(now 57) got diagnosed last year. He did not quite smoking either. He doesn’t really seem to care, or realize that this is a life-threatening disease. I have done a little research, but what are his chances of living until he is 60. He sleeps with an oxygen mask. He smokes at least a pack a day, drinks coffee, doesn’t exercise. It is sad how horrible he lives his life, but I am only 15, and want him to see me graduate.. Is it possible this can happen. And if so, how much longer do you think he could have. They diagnosed him when he passed out soo much, because he had a build up of tar in his lungs he couldn’t breathe. That was last year or 2 years ago, but I remember about 5-7 years ago that happened too. He passed out while driving because he couldn’t get any oxygen, could that have been the emphysema too, meaning he has had it for more than a year or two? I want him to see me get married. Have children, live my life. I doubt that will happen, but at least I want him to see me graduate. My grandpa promised me he would live long enough to see me graduate, unfortunately he passed away from cancer 2 years ago. I never expected my dad not to live that long either. I wanted both of them, and now I may not have either of them. What do you think?
Best answer:
Answer by Extra Stuff
My father also , a smoker, was diagnosed at age 60, and died at 84, but he did not use oxygen.
Everyone is different and there is no set rule on how long one can live with this disease.

What is life like for a person with Cystic Fibrosis after a lung transplant?
Question by Bruce W: What is life like for a person with Cystic Fibrosis after a lung transplant?
I heard, and I may be wrong, that a person who receives a lung transplant will need this repeated within a few years, perhaps 5 years? What is a person’s quality of life like after a double lung transplant? Will the person develop CF problems in the new lungs? How long are people living after a lung transplant?
Best answer:
Answer by gangadharan_nair
Lungs- Since this organ’s main attachments are rather simple, lung transplantation is not too difficult a surgical procedure. Lung transplantation has been performed on several patients, and there is no doubt that one day, transplatation of this organ is quite common.
There are several patients who has received donor lungs. Unfortunately, to date, no one has survived for very long after this procedure even when operative recovery has ensued. Fatal rejection reaction have occurred in all cases.

Life ruined. All hope is gone?
Question by Brian C: Life ruined. All hope is gone?
3 years ago my life was on an upward path. Work was going great. I was promoted and told I had a great future. I am from England and was asked to work for my company in California. This was a big deal. They send their best people to CA to learn more about the business and then the theory goes they get transferred back as senior managers. Ever since then everything has gone wrong. Work didn’t go great. I met this woman who was very beautiful but who was a complete liar – I was just too dumb to realize it. I fell in love with her she cleaned me out financially and left in the car I bought her with some guy she had been cheating on me with throughout our relationship. Work went worse after this. I thought about going home but was too embarrassed – everyone at work in England knows about how stupid I was and how badly I let her treat me.
Then my father was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in March of this year. I asked for a job at home and was offered my old job back. This might sound dumb but this hurts my pride very much. Its like I have wasted the last three years. People who were junior when I left are now my superior. Basically my career is ruined, I am ashamed and embarrassed for being so dumb with my “GF”, i owe a lot of money.
My father passed away 4 weeks ago. I thought that I would have been able to spend more time with him and I know this sounds selfish but now I regret moving back home. There will be no opportunity to transfer back to CA again.
To top all this off I bought a second hand car in a hurry with the last of my money and it has turned out to be a heap of junk.- has a check engine light already.
I never thought of suicide before but feel my life is completely ruined and that at 33 that I am trapped with nothing and that there is no point in going on.
Anyone have any ways to even begin to see a way out of this mess?

Every experience is an opportunity to grow and change. You spent three strange years of your life making bad decisions, but your life is not over. Your dad getting sick gave you an opportunity to change the direction your life was going and leave California. Now you have these intense memories and experiences. Even these painful experiences are special in their own way, and sometimes sadness and loss can be a very beautiful thing. Try writing your experiences down. You sound like you have an interesting story to tell. You have nothing to be ashamed of. You took a risk and experienced some crazy shit. Now you’re a different person who will arrive stronger than before. With confidence you can achieve anything.

Wow. Your life does seem to have taken many bad turns here. I wish there was more I could do to offer you as some sort of solution to this all, but I know I cannot. I do however embark to say that death is not the best answer. Your father is losing his life without his consent and you wish to throw yours away.
If it would be of any help, I extend my friendship. I am here and willing to talk.

So how do you take down corrupt government officials? Investigate and report on their wrongdoings until those officials resign or are sent to jail. That is exactly what happened in 1982-1983 when a group of Cerritos College interns and two high school interns (one was me) staffed a local news show and set out to report newscast after newscast what one Government Watchdog had discovered in the City of Norwalk. Through a series of reports during very tense newscasts with City officials watching over us we presented the facts. Later our cameras would witness the resignation of a well liked City Administrator who got his “hand caught in the cookie jar.” I was 15 at the time but my suspicion of government officials never left me. In the series of reports I worked as cameraperson, editor and operated video tape during the live broadcasts. I had the pleasure of working with what would end up being the finest group of journalist ever assembled for a community based newscast. This videotape copy is of poor quality since it was recorded on VHS in the very slow SLP mode. It was an air check for the anchor and is believed to be the only surviving copy of that 1983 news special. Note: In 1998, Kraus was serving as interim city manager of Baldwin Park, California when a reporter from the Times called him seeking comment about his tenure as city manager of Norwalk, California in 1983. According to Kleinheider, Kraus resigned from his interim position within three hours of the call. Why …

Q&A: Is this likely to cause me major health problems in later life? (i.e. cancer, copd, emphysema)?
Question by will s: Is this likely to cause me major health problems in later life? (i.e. cancer, copd, emphysema)?
I’m 16, and i’ve smoked on average about 8 a day for about 8 months. I am now quitting, because I’m a football referee, and I only started smoking when I dislocated my knee, so I couldn’t referee. My knee is better now, and I will be back refereeing in a few weeks
My great granddad died from lung cancer in his 50s, but he smoked 20 a day for years, and health wise, I tend to take after the other side of my family. My granny on his side of the family (his daughter) smoked 20 a day for 40 years (though she never inhaled) and is now nearly 80 and still fit as a fiddle.
There’s a slight history of cancer in the female side of the other side of my family – both my granny and my aunt have had breast cancer.
I just want to know, is this 8 months of idiocy likely to come back and haunt me?
Best answer:
Answer by Ricky D
It might, but don’t let the thought ruin your happiness. I smoked for 30 years and don’t have lung cancer. I have heart attacks, unexplained lumps in many other places, ED that is improving now that I’m off the weed, jaundice, partial amnesia, type 2 diabetes, kidney and gall stones, rapidly deteriorating hearing and vision, impossible bad breath, occasional incontinence in both openings that is getting worse, and gout.

Question by linda h: 17 YEARS OLD AND WORRIED SICK. WILL LIFE GET ANY BETTER EVER!?!?!?!?!
UGHHHHH!!!!!?
Heres my story, well im 17 years old, and have a amazing boyfriend.
I am a fun outgoing person, and i love to have fun!
Well here about 2 months ago i got scared i had cancer because u kept getting sick and couldnt get rid of my sinus infection. Well then i developed fluids in my ears (i was sooo dizzy, and felt like i was dying!) and then i got some type of stomach virus, with vomiting, i only vomited like 3 times though.. Well i think somewhere in all that worrying i got (health?) anxiety.
Well i just had a check up about 5 weeks ago, he said im very healthy cause i was concerned.
And yesterday i went BACK to the doctor cause i have been having twitching (like spasms kinda?) all over my body, like jerking, ticks, in my arms, legs, HEAD back, shoulders, ect. Plus my head feels shaky sometimes, and sometimes my hands do, this stuff happens even when im not anxious, i dont even really feel anxious until this stuff happens. Well the twitching is worse in the mornings, and happens throughout the day, but when i dont think about it, it dont happen as much. So anyway, This was a diff doctor cause my original one was out of the office. Well she listened to me well, then listened to my heart, lungs, checked my reflexes, asked me questions, turned off the light and looked in my eyes really good, made me follow them with her finger, and then told me that my symptoms are real, im not imaging them, they are like neurogical symptoms ( like the twitching ) but there is nothing neurogically wrng with me, that my mind and body play a big role together, and my mind is making my do all ths thats it is part depression, and some anxiety too.
I have had some stuff going on like, i started a new program at school, my boyfriend whom i am obsessivly inlove with just got locked up, and my parents and i constantky argue. But even worse things have happend, yet i never developed anxiety from anything else, even worse sentiatuions, so why would i get it now all a sudden???
what do you guys think, my mom gets frusterated when i say things like “wht if she missed something” my mom get mad because she has been hearing this for a long time now because i bug her day and night about it.
Also sometmes i get confused, and mix my words up. my head feels like unsteady, moves uncontrollably.
is this normal with anxiety? do you guys think i should listen to my doctor?? or do you think it is something serious i should go get help for.?
my mom tells me im a hypercondriac, which i do sorta agree, but i dont know how to over come this fear somthings wrong with me.
im also ADD so doc put me on Shatarra.
and today i have been feeling spacy and kinda nervous!
is this anxiety/depression, and how do i overcome this??
HAS ANY1 ELSE EXPERIANCED THIS? PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU HAVE I FEEL SO ALONE!

Semiconductor Industry Workers Ask for Chemical Information 1979 Working For Your Life LOHP
This clip is from the late 1970s in the early days of the semiconductors industry and before workers had the right to know what chemicals they worked with and were exposed to on the job.. Due to rapid changes in this industry, manufacturing processes and their associated hazards may change completely every few years. These changes make hazard assessments more difficult to complete and require that they be conducted more often. Common hazards may include exposure to solvents, acid and caustic solutions, toxic metals, and radiation. For a look at the hazards from the late 1990s, read the article Where the Chips Fall at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov . For current information, go to OSHA’s website at www.osha.gov This is from the wonderful 1979 film, Working for Your Life (58 minutes, Labor Occupational Health Program) explores the health and safety conditions of America’s working women by examining the hazards and demands they face in their workplaces. Andrea Hricko and Ken Light, working for LOHP at the time, created this important documentary film. The film is based on the 1976 handbook – Working for Your Life: A Woman’s Guide to Job Health Hazards, by Andrea Hricko with Melanie Brunt. A joint publication of Labor Occupational Health Program and Public Citizen’s Health Research Group This handbook is available on the internet at content.cdlib.org . Q&A: How accurate are Dr’s on life expectancy?
Question by A: How accurate are Dr’s on life expectancy?
I asked a ? a month back or so about my mothers cancer. She has breast cancer that metastasized to her brain. The were able to control it until recently. Chemo for the cancer in the rest of her body is no longer an option and neither is radiation on the brain. They said they would do it but it was my mothers wish to stop treatments. Her oncologist gave her 3 wks to 3 months to live. It was a shock but he said it is an extremely aggressive cancer. We have seen many of the signs which include not eating, sleeping for 20-22 hours a day( which this week has been the exact opposite due to a steroid they have her taking for swelling), she hasn’t been able to walk for a month now, and she also hasn’t been going to the bathroom for days. The baffling part is when she is awake she is relatively alert and is still “mom”, it is hard to beleive 3wks she could be gone.

Answer by Paddy 1969
Doctors are not seers ( although they appear to portray themselves as such ), they can give some general time frame, but whether it is accurate is another story. In general they give the minimum life expectancy time, because really they do not know what the actual period left would be. Remember that reality often works quite differently, so it is best to disregard the 3 months assessment and just be optimistic. Life tends to be anything but predictable.

Why are humans the only species that pollutes to the detriment of life? Can’t blame that on God can we?
Question by Bilbo Baggins: Why are humans the only species that pollutes to the detriment of life? Can’t blame that on God can we?
Since all other life on this planet is unaware of wastes they create,…….then why is it never a detriment to earths ecological system?
It is a living mechanical circulatory system isn’t it? It shows there is an organized design of a Supreme Creator.
Most animals and fish contribute waste to their environments that are essentially the same as human waste (fecal matter laden with bacteria and reduced compounds). If the population of an environment exceeded the capability of the environment to neutralize or at least tolerate those wastes, certain organisms will begin to die. This limit is known as the “carrying capacity” of the environment. In general, nature is wise enough to not naturally reach this limit in most instances, such that most systems can self regulate themselves and avoid reaching this limit.
There are examples of individual organisms that can excrete specific pollutants or toxins into an environment, usually as a defense mechanism. There are also plenty of examples of organisms that can detoxify and store pollutants from an environment in their bodies, making the overall environment “safer” (until the organism dies, at which point some toxins can be re-released to the environment).
