Do I have any potential as an author like Sarah Dessen?
Question by tallysmiley: Do I have any potential as an author like Sarah Dessen?
“The doctor said the prognosis isn’t good” I heard my mother speak, I saw her lips move with the words but some how I still couldn’t hear. “Your sister’s going to be in the Oncology unit at Children’s Hospital for at least two months under going treatment for stage 4 melanoma” my mind drifted away from the dusty kitchen table and from the white empty walls to last summer.
“Halley wear the sunscreen, you already look like a gang of orange markers attacked you” I said handing her the bottle of SPF 70 she examined the bottle as she hit the gas pedal.
“Lila, you expect me to wear this? It’s summer for god’ s sake not Halloween and I don’t want to look like a pale ghost like you!” she said throwing the pink rigged bottle at me .
I snapped back into the moment remembering the picture that day from the beach, she looked like she was of Spanish descent, her long wavy black hair against her dark skin and then me looking like your typical Irish girl, long blonde hair and pale skin. She was wearing a leopard print bikini and I a black one piece. They both kind of suited our personality, me classic and simple and my sister’s risqué and vibrant.
“Did you hear me Lila” my mother said as she sniffled and took her left arm rubbing her blue blouse that accented her red hair and green eyes nicely.
“Yeah” I said as my voice also shook back to reality
“Your father will be bringing her home to get her things for the stay, they need to start the chemo immediately.” my mother said peering out the window.
It’s being told by the perspective of the younger sister, while her sister is in the hospital she will be with her for most of the time because her parents are working to pay all of the hospital bills, while Lila (Thinking about switching the names) is at the hospital she meets and begins a close friendship with Owen, who is dieing of cancer and has a slim chance of survival. Anyway in the end it looks as if Halley is going to make it so she focus’ her attention on Owen, but then in the final days of Halley’s life they find a MET rapidly growing on her lung, that soon kills her. Owen then makes it. The title would be “Short But Sweet”
How does it sound?
I don’t see my sister’s keeper in this plot at all I’m a big fan of Jodi’s work and I’ve read My Sister’s Keeper and this is nothing like that, for example the younger sister isnt being asked to give up her organs and she wasn’t created to save her sister. And the younger sister’s life in the end isn’t taken and the older sister doesn’t live because the younger sister dies. I just don’t see that similarity at all.
Best answer:
Answer by Ellenfp
The plot has potential (although it sounds SO much like My Sister’s Keeper but with a few changes), but you really need a good lesson in grammar.
“Yeah[,]” I said as my voice also shook back to reality [.]
“…melanoma[.]” [M]y mind drifted away from the dusty kitchen table and from the white empty walls to last summer[.]
You do you use the word ‘said’ (< - dialogue tag) more times than it's needed. Try this:
"...ghost like you!” She threw the pink rigged bottle at me .

What does the blood coughed up in lung cancer look like (kinda graphic)?
Question by thespeedyellsbury: What does the blood coughed up in lung cancer look like (kinda graphic)?
I found a small, pinky fingernail-sized dried brown stain on my dad’s pillowcase; the stain was surrounded by what looked like a tiny amount of dried clearish liquid. Should I be concerned, or is it a coffee stain? (He’s in his mid-70′s.)
I’ve seen hemoptysis in the late stages of lung cancer (the size of 2 coins, with a small clot or two) and in the final stage (50cc. in half a day), but has anyone seen what it looks like when it just starts?
Thank you.

You stated it was dried, it had not just started, watch his pillow for more. If there is no more don’t worry about it.

Question by invisiblemonsters: I know this sounds like a stupid dream.. but I want to cure cancer.?
so you know how teachers are always asking, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” i’ve never really known the answer to that, but about a month ago i participated in the light the night cancer walk in los angeles and it kinda changed my perspective. i’m so sick of watching people having to go through so much. okay my question is, what are you supposed to study to try to find the cure for cancer? i was thinking biology.. but i’m not sure. i know i probably sound like another stupid teenager going through a phase, but i really want this..i’m a sophomore in high school, so i don’t think it’s too late yet.. What is life like for a person with Cystic Fibrosis after a lung transplant?
Question by Bruce W: What is life like for a person with Cystic Fibrosis after a lung transplant?
I heard, and I may be wrong, that a person who receives a lung transplant will need this repeated within a few years, perhaps 5 years? What is a person’s quality of life like after a double lung transplant? Will the person develop CF problems in the new lungs? How long are people living after a lung transplant?
Best answer:
Answer by gangadharan_nair
Lungs- Since this organ’s main attachments are rather simple, lung transplantation is not too difficult a surgical procedure. Lung transplantation has been performed on several patients, and there is no doubt that one day, transplatation of this organ is quite common.
There are several patients who has received donor lungs. Unfortunately, to date, no one has survived for very long after this procedure even when operative recovery has ensued. Fatal rejection reaction have occurred in all cases.

Wouldn’t it make just as much, if not more sense to ban tobacco to stem the tide of lung cancer or outlaw alchohol to curb alchoholism? This sounds like the beginning of something very bad to me. Whay are your thoughts?

They shouldn’t ban them, but try to suggest changes on the menu, or the low-grade ingredients they use, or bad combination of foods they serve.

Why doesn’t the U.S. have cigarette warning labels like most other countries?
Question by My Avatar Is Beautiful: Why doesn’t the U.S. have cigarette warning labels like most other countries?
They’ve done studies and the graphic images do have a better effect over fine print. It’s common sense. You wanna smoke something from a box that has a black lung on it, or one that has a couple words about cancer?
Do they not care, it’s insulting, check it out:

She’s going through one of the worst experiences of her life…losing a parent…she’s scared, she’s sad, she’s exhausted, and she’s confused. Probably totally zoned out. Just listen to her when she wants to talk, comfort her when she wants to cry, try not to get mad at her if she seems distant or short tempered….she’s hanging on to the last moments she can spend with her dad, she loves you but she knows she prob has the rest of her life to spend with you…her days with her dad are probably numbered and she wants to do everything she can to keep him comfortable and show her love
just try to be super supportive and understanding, now and even more so if and when he passes….

How is it some people can smoke for 40 years and not develop anything serious like lung cancer or emphysema?
Question by : How is it some people can smoke for 40 years and not develop anything serious like lung cancer or emphysema?
My husband’s grandfather lived to be 93 “chewing” (he would put this thing in his mouth & spit, not sure what it really is but I know it’s bad.) smoking, & drinking pepsi & beer every night. Whereas I know there are people that could just smoke cigarettes for a few years and die a horrible death. Why is this?
Best answer:
Answer by ilovehim23
My father smoked in his early 20s, but he gave it up to become healthier. Then, at 48 he passed away from colon cancer. If you ask anyone that knew him they’d tell you what a wonderful man he was. There’s no explaining it. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people…it sucks, but hey that’s life, right?

Q&A: Why do people say things like tanning salons, cigarettes, and alcohol should be banned?
Question by Miss Mallory: Why do people say things like tanning salons, cigarettes, and alcohol should be banned?
It just seems weird to me, ya know?
People comming off as crazy. “Well, tanning beds give people cancer, so they should be banned all together.”
It’s like when a non smoker walks up to somebody smoking a cigarette and says, “hey, did you know that’s bad for you and that every time you inhale your lungs are turning black and that one day, that little tiny mix of paper and tobacco is gonna give you cancer and end your life slowly and miserably.”
You would think a smoker would know that. After all, they get to see first hand the damages done by smoking. Better than any non smoker who doesn’t wake up feeling a tightness in their chest when they try to inhale, and who doesn’t find themselves exhausted and out of breath doing the simplest of things.
Just like people say tanning beds are bad. That if they had it their way, they’d be shut down for good. Just because people tan, doesn’t mean that they are ignorant to the dangers of tanning. There are signs posted that tell you that it’s bad for your body.
And then people who say alcohol should be banned, because it makes people act stupid and is the cause for drunk driving. Well, most of the time, those drunk people are at bars with other drunk people. I do agree that being wasted in public isn’t good.
But I don’t think that alcohol is to blame for deaths caused by drunk drivers, because at the end of the night, it wasn’t the alcohol that made you drive your car, it was you.
I guess I just don’t understand why you cry and complain about things like this. If you don’t believe in smoking, DON’T SMOKE.
If you don’t believe in drinking, DON’T DRINK
If you don’t believe in tanning, DON’T TAN!
But why try to bombard the industries with insults and accusations, and why fuss at people who support them?
It’s just a rant. Does this make sense to anybody else?
Best answer:
Answer by Free-bee
please dont rant.
but i think tanning fries your skin and is bad, and so is smoking, you dont have to try it to have an opinion on it.
but alcohol. no harm there if you dont get drunk everyday.
so i’ll ban 2 out of 3

feel like im not getting enough air in my lungs?
Question by prolly234: feel like im not getting enough air in my lungs?
for 4 months now,i feel like im not getting enough oxygen into my lungs.my head feels very spaced out and sometimes i feel lifeless.i have headaches sometimes and recently my throat has been aching really badly to the point that i feel like im choking.most times especially at night,i feel like im going to die.ive been to the emergency room and i was told by the doctors that i have mild anxiety and mild anaemia.this is really botherin me because recently, the feeling of not getting enough air has become stonger and shows no signs of improvement.i also feel very weak and have loss of co-ordination sometimes.i also have mild chest pains.my eyes also feels tired and i feel pressure inmy brain sometimes.plzzz,i need to be sure this is only anxiety and not some serious ailment.
Best answer:
Answer by JW
I have been going through the same experience. I understood that I had developed anxiety after having an anaphylactic allergic reaction while on a bus on the highway, but the breathing issues (feeling like a I had a lack of oxygen, constantly taking deep breaths with little satisfaction, constant yawning, and dizziness) didn’t add up. I went through a lot of tests: for asthma, a gastroscopy, and an ultrasound. The doctor’s just prescribed me an inhaler and sent me on my way.
I suggest you look up articles on Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome and see if the symptoms apply to you. It is not a serious ailment and there are no medications that can help you with this issue. It can be a product of the anxiety from hyperventilating, but breathing techniques, yoga, meditation are all suggested to help with this problem.
If you need to go onto a medication to take the edge off from the anxiety, a doctor may prescribe something like rivotril or xanax in small doses as needed when you’re feeling anxious, but I seriously suggest looking up articles on CHS because that is one syndrome that doctor’s tend to overlook!! I am still learning to deal with my symptoms, but it has really helped to ease my mind and know that I am getting the oxygen I require, I just may be getting too much!!

What does a smokers cough feel like?
Question by Carol: What does a smokers cough feel like?
Best answer:
Answer by julie d
Well, unfortunately I can answer this question for you as I have smoked for over 30 years and need to quit, but can’t seem to. As a smoker, I often get a sore throat. I have a dry hacking cough during the day, and a deeper cough at night. When I wake up, it feels like my lungs are tight and I cough hard and a lot of mucus comes up. Also, I am short of breath quite often and when I laugh there is a hoarseness to it. This scares me, because my dad died from smoking and in the end stages of lung disease you literally die from drowning in all of that mucus that is stuck in your lungs and you can’t cough it up.
If you haven’t tried smoking yet, PLEASE don’t! It is so hard to quit and so deadly. I wish I had never started.

well i would just like to figure out what kinds of materials and problems the trade centers dealt with?
Question by Jen C: well i would just like to figure out what kinds of materials and problems the trade centers dealt with?
I am asking this because the fire fighters and police and every one that helped out with the 911 disaster was unawear that inside the trade center they dealt with all sorts of items like asbestous, and many other cancer causing agents. I was just curious to how the government can get away with this. Obviously the terrorist knew what they were hitting and when they hit it everything that was inside those buildings is now inside the lungs and bodies of many american citizens. And i think that someone should be held responsible for the work that was done inside the trade center and for however the terrorists discovered what kind of work they were doing
Best answer:
Answer by Citizen1984
All of the junk that people like is basically made of very harmful materials whether it’s your laptop that has ICs filled with vile poisons to buildings that are filled with asbestos, plastic film on the windows. The basic products of our economy are hazardous waste and pollution.
While your concern demonstrates that you are compassionate there is nothing shocking that when you fill a big building with jet fuel and light it thousands of tons of poison will come out.
What is shocking is that medical care is denied to many of the responders and especially the volunteers.
President Bush’s first official action was to make the airlines immune so they would not have to pay for their own negligence in allowing four planes to be hijacked. The best we can hope for is to give the best medical care to the victims. But, we don’t do that either. We are morally lacking as a nation.
The terrorists who did the dirty work all died there’s not much greater punishment you can inflict upon them.

My boyfriend told me this, though I can’t say if that’s true or not. He said he read it from somewhere. That’s why I’m asking, because I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s rare, isn’t it? It shouldn’t really matter when you have kids of what age.
I just need different opinions. Really, what is cervical cancer caused from?

Its false. Cervical Cancer is caused from different strains of the HPV virus. There are many strains and there is a vaccine for some strains of it, but not all of them.
