My husband’s father has been diagnosed with gastric cancer. The doctors cannot do much – pretty much nothing, could not offer even chemo and gave him no chances. How long can you live with cancer in its 4th stage? The doctors said a few months maybe a year, but did not really want to talk about it.
Do you know anybody that has lived years with it?

There is no way of saying. They can’t give you a definite answer. My aunt was told 6 months to live without treatment other then pain meds for her lung cancer…she lived for 18 months. The doctors told my mother 6 months to a year and she was gone in a month…my father was gone in 3 they couldn’t give us any time frame for him because he had advanced pancreatic cancer. Just enjoy the time you have left with him.

if it has become infectious the doctors can cure it by medications and that person can live with it with the treatment upto 20 more years !!!!

I have a relative who was diagnosed with brain cancer about a year ago and he’s been doing chemo ever since. Unfortunately last week he was rushed to the ICU due to heart problems (caused by the chemo medication) and now one of his lungs has stopped functioning. Since then his chemo therapy has been stopped to prevent further heart issues.
Right now he can speak but it’s a little difficult to understand his words. Also the left side of his body was paralyzed a couple of months ago due to a seizure.
With all that said, does anybody know how long he will be around for? Thanks.

It depends on what stage its at. If they can do surgery, if the chemo kills it. I had bone cancer. I know that chemo can kill you if you take too much. The cancer can also tho. Anyways I’m not saying the chemo will. It helps him. I would just pray on it. Know when he does go he won’t be in pain anymore. I’m sorry

Well it depends on his body and his fighting will.. but most off the will TO survive.. but anyway
the body will give out before the body .. so it can be 1 day – months to years.. its possible
even if he is in stage 4 now.. depending on what treatments he’s gotten and what state he is in .. the cancer is still curable by means of alternative medicine..
Cancer is actually a microbe that is inside a cell and on the out side. This microbes lives in cells that lack an oxygenated state. Which means the Microbe can be killed with oxygen. *yeah i know its hard to believe but as you know or would like to know that Organized Medicine is there for money and profits and not really the truth.. Don’t blame your doctors always, cause they were trained and somewhat brainwashed to selling drugs and things that hurt you. Chemo for example can work but side effects are simple, they kill the good cells.. you don’t want to do this.
YOu have to attack the microbe it self then once that is done the cell it self will heal back to normal in 2 weeks to a up to a year or so depending on the area affected.

It really depends on the tissue type (smallcell lung cancer /squamous /large cell etc) and the degree to which the cancer has spread in the body. If this is small cell lung cancer usually less than 6 months. For others type of lung cancers at stage 4 it can range from a few weeks to 2 years.
Your oncologist is the best person to give more details.

My dad has been struggling with cancer for about 4 yrs now. The first time the cancer was found in the bladder, kidneys. He now has only one kidney. Later he was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer at stage 3. Back in Nov 2007 he had a surgery removing some lymph nodes and then he began chemo shortly after which made him to sick and he quit taking it after about 3 wks. That was December07-Jan08 about 3wks ago in May 08 they found that the cancer has spread to the lungs and I believe there are 2nodes in each lung and now I was told my dad has stage 4 melanoma skin cancer. I just want some information I have a 10yr old son and his papaw is his world. My dad is only 54 yrs old I want to know what the lifspan is. All honesty be blunt I need to know and prepare myself and my son.

First let me say that I feel for you and your child. I have seen melanoma take a mans life fairly quickly after it has metastasized. I did interval Sonography on a patient w/ late stage melanoma and once it went to the lung/liver it gets real aggressive; the prognosis for anything over six-month survival was grim.

When I was 3 I came down with pneumonia. This left my lungs scared. I was pretty healthy after that, but I needed to use an inhaler. When I got older, the inhaler didn’t work so well, so I was prescribed a nebulizer.
A couple of years ago I had a lung emergency. I was using my nebulizer when I got extremely short of breath. It got worse until I couldn’t breath and I passed out. I was rushed to the hospital, and my life was saved.
The doctors convinced me to do a biopsy. When they did it, the collapsed one of my lungs. Normally people can function during the procedure with only 1 lung, but because of the scaring I couldn’t. The doctors were able to get a piece of my lung, but it wasn’t the piece they wanted. It didn’t tell them much useful. I was put on prednisone for 6 months (I know so long), and I feel like it helped. I have been issue free, but I still use my nebulizer for a few minutes about every other day.
What do you think? How likely am I to die early, and how much early?

I know nobody can be certain, but I am looking for somebody with experience to tell me what the odds are. I want the mathematical expectation in your opinion. Or statistics. Statistics would be best.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but i really don’t think anyone on Yahoo Answers can tell you how long you have to live. We are all going to die someday, and none of us know when. The best thing you can do is enjoy your life now. Good Luck & Hugs

My aunt went to the doctor and they found a spot on her lung they told her it was cancer & terminal. They said that her lungs wouldn’t be able to take any surgeries and that she has 3 to 6 months to live. she has been a smoker since she was 12 she is 50 now and continues to smoke. I was wondering if there is a chance she will make it past the 6 months or are the doctors usually pretty much on the nose about the time patients have left? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated

If the “spot” on her lung has spread to other parts of the body, or from other parts of the body, you can expect a pretty poor prognosis. When you smoke for 38 years though, what can you expect?

You are getting WAY ahead of yourself, most of the time liver cancer is the end effect of Hep C sometimes. This is not always the end result of the disease. I have had Hep C for 25 years and still have no sign of liver cancer

My dad has stage four lung cancer. The doctor’s have said that some of it has spread to his stomach, the tumor.. I am in desperation and so upset about this news. Anyway my question is, even though the cancer has spread throughout his LUNGS, can he get it removed? And as for the tumor that has spread a little, can they treat that with chemo or radiation therapy? I know I might sound a little mad right now, but I need closure. Someone help? Can he get his infected lung removed? Or is this really it? Is it totally uncurable?
But the lymph nodes havent affected his brain or liver .. cant they rid of some of the cancer that has spread through his stomach through radio or chemo therapy?

If there is cancer in one lung, I guess it might be possible to have the lung removed. If it has already spread it might be harder.
I don’t know how bad your dad’s cancer is and I’m not a medical professional, but I can answer your title question “Can you live with one lung?” The answer is “Yes, you can”

My grandfather was diagnosed with isofagal cancer 2years ago, and a couple of weeks after this, they then told him that he had lung cancer in one of his lungs as well. He has been on chemo for a while, and has had 3 very strong treatments, and some radiation ( not much of that ) and he is now finding out that one of the lymph nodes near the heart is very infective, and now he is building a large volume of fluid around the heart, so they will be giving him an echocardiogram Thursday, and a CT Scan, and then another chemo treatment, but my question was if He has cancer of the heart, how long with treatment would he be able to live with this. He is 67 yrs old, and there is nothing else at all wrong with him, except for the BIG “C” word. Please help. Thank You

Cancers in the heart are extremely rare, but they can occur esp. as you describe with all the cancer that is already around the area in the lungs. Because of the way the heart works, when there are tumors they can affect either the electrical system of the heart or grow & block the flow of blood, like blocking blood in the auricles ( upper chambers) & preventing pumping blood into the ventricles (lower chambers). They can also block the blood flow & cause heart muscle death just like a regular heart attack.It really all depends on where the cancer is located. You will know more after the echo and CAT are done. I hope it is a small tumor that can be surgically removed. Good luck.

I am a smoker and smoke around 10 cigarette’s a day. i mostly smoke after meals and at night before sleeping. I have been smoking for almost 5 years now. I know smoking can cause lung cancer but how can you tell if you are gona get it or not cause some people get it and some people stay healthy till they die even after being chain smokers for all there lives.

Actually most smokers that quit before old age or even smoke until their old age have breathing problems. If you see someone with an oxygen tank or nebulizer age 50+ its usually because they smoked. You can’t tell if you’re going to get cancer, if there were a way to tell it’d save a lot of lives. Some people are just heartier than others when it comes to being able to stay generally healthy well into their dying days.
