My lungs feel like they are on fire/burning?
Question by JediMaster: My lungs feel like they are on fire/burning?
My husband and I live with my mom-she’s disabled and I take care of her full time. Both her and hubby smoke. She smokes like a chimney. My step dad, her hubby, buy her the smokes so it’s not like I can’t not buy them for her.
I have asthma, and am on two different drugs for it-Proair for short acting and I take areobid twice a day to control symptoms.
When I say something to my mom, she tells me “I’ve smoked all your life, I’m not going to quit, get off my back.” Hubby says something similar.
Short of a Dr. telling them I have stage four lung cancer with days to live and your smoking did this to her, they aren’t going to quit.
Lately, every time I’m around cigarette smoke (even smelling it can do it) I either start coughing really bad or feel like I’m going to hack up a lung. Also anytime either one of them lights up, my lungs feel like they are on fire and burning really bad.
What could be wrong?
I don’t want to have to put her in a home, don’t think my step dad would allow it anyway.
I do have a job (fast food, minumam wage kind of thing) and I only make about 600 a month. To move completly out of my apartment that I share with them is nearly impossible-there’s no where to live in my area that I can afford. I’ve looked-cheapest rent in my area for a stuido apartment is 620 a month. Not hard to figure out the math there.
I hate the burning/fire sensation I get. Is it somthing I should be concered about?
yes, hubby is working to. He makes about 800 a month. As far as looking for another job? The area we live in is such a depressed area, it took me almost 3 months to find this one. As far as only smoking in one room of the house, my mom does keep her door closed most the time-however she smokes so much that when she does open her door, the smell of smoke overwhelms me.
and as far as moving, it’s not hard finding a place where we can afford the rent, its coming up with the money to rent a truck to move, the money the new place would want in deposits, buying some funitrue like a couch and table at goodwill and stuff we can’t afford.

Wow… what a crappy situation. Your own mother and husband are killing you and don’t seem to care about it. How sad. Since you have already asked them not to smoke around you and they don’t seem to think that the are the culprits. I would say to go ahead and get a doctors note saying that the smoke is what is harming you and show that to them. If they still don’t want to stop, I would say that you threaten to put your mother in a home saying that you don’t want to jeopardize your health so that she can smoke.
Good luck to you.

Australians have taken up the important public health messages as far as their heart and breasts are concerned, yet they don’t appear to consider their lungs in the same way. The Australian Lung Foundation has decided to take action by creating a campaign to draw the nation’s attention to their lungs and to encourage people to protect their lung health and to see their GP if they have concerns about their lung health. www.lungfoundation.com.au

How can I clear my lungs out?
Question by Ben: How can I clear my lungs out?
I have been photographing the inside of an abandoned school building the past two days. I’ve been wearing a mask but I still inhaled alot of dust/dirt/possibly asbestos. I can feel it all in my lungs and I keep coughing. Is there anything I can do to make it better? I do not smoke. I have allergies, but Claritin isn’t helping with my lungs.
Can I do something to clear this all out or do I just wait it out? It feels best to be outside, which it’s cold and rainy today, if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

Answer by Isness
The lungs are not empty pouches that you breath air in and out of. They are organs that have a spong like appearance, where the internal part of the lung is made of of little tiny air pockets. I don’t think this is what your doctor is refering to when he mentions holes. As far as redness in the face is concerned, the quality and rate of your breathing effects the heart, which in turn effects blood pressure and hence, the amount of color (or lack of color) in the face. As far as stiff joints are concerned? I’m sorry, I don’t know. My advice would be to get off of those ciggarettes as fast as possible, drink lots of fresh water, take flax seed oil, berry juice and veggies. Don’t change your diet to this overnight. But make it gradual. I wish you the best.

Are there any healthy things you can do for your lungs?
Question by : Are there any healthy things you can do for your lungs?
Obviously stay away from smoke and stuff, but is there anything you can do to make them healthier besides that?
Best answer:
Answer by thekmancan
To make them healthy? Go to the woods. There is no cleaner air than what nature provides, so go out there for a few days and see how you feel when you return. Oxygen bars are also available, but I wonder as to their efficacy.
To keep them healthy? Keep a dust mask handy, and whenever you are in a shop or a dust blows up put it on. Avoid construction sites; concrete mix and insulation and drywall will ruin you. Avoid large cities, especially Hong Kong (nearly 50 percent of LAs air particulates come from China!).

spot on the lungs…………….?
Question by jetti: spot on the lungs…………….?
my brother’s x-ray shows there’s a spot on his right lung but the doctor said it wasnt TB.
The doctor said he still have to make another xray on other views of the lung but i think we should only have xray once a year. The doctor hasnt figure it out yet. He just prescribed cough medicine but my brother lost it.
What could this be? i just hope its notTB
Best answer:
Answer by J B
If your doctor was worried about this spot, he would have ordered additional tests to find out what it was. Sometimes, things appear and then go away. His doctor might order a CT scan to find out what this spot is or he could just take the watch and wait. Your brother (if he is an adult) is the one who will have to request further testing from his doctor or ask for a better explanation of the spot.

Q&A: Why can’t multiple breast cancer mets in lungs just be surgically removed?
Question by Ninninnin: Why can’t multiple breast cancer mets in lungs just be surgically removed?
My wife tells me her doctor says that surgery is not feasible in her situation but I have trouble understanding why there is no quick-fix like just removing the spots in her lungs instead of going for weekly Herceptin treatments. She says the Herceptin is just keeping the cancer from growing any further but it isn’t actually shrinking anything. Shouldn’t she be getting more aggressive treatment to get rid of the cancer? She says that it’s a matter of balancing QOL with treatments and seems fine with the idea of living with cancer. She seems well now and lots of people have trouble believing that she really has cancer. I felt the same way for a long time but am coming to realize that she’s trying pretty hard to stay positive. I guess I’m really trying to figure out what I can do to make it all go away but know that I have to figure out how to deal with it instead.

Answer by celianne
It is a terrible time for you, because you feel so helpless. I am also going through herceptin treatment, but my cancer is clear.
Just listen to what her doctors say and keep positive for her sake – she has got the right attitude. Enjoy every single hour with her – and I wish you both all the luck in the world.
God bless you.

Q&A: What do small white spots in your lungs on an x-ray mean?
Question by : What do small white spots in your lungs on an x-ray mean?
I had a chest xray yesterday, and there are a few white masses in my lungs as well as a few small, solid white spots that are just as dense as my bones. What could this be?
(I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to discuss results but I’m a bit worried)
The white spots are all through. Not confined to one particular area.
The white masses look like solid white cobwebs and are concentrated particularly in the upper area of the lungs and also to the sides
Best answer:
Answer by Tammy B
Large white areas on either side of the heart are called the hilum. The hilum is the area where the blood vessels and bronchi are concentrated in the lung. Other white spots could be blood vessels standing on end.
If the spot is abnormal it could be all sorts of things from masses to pneumonia.
Depends on where and what the spots look like.

What are great healthy fruits for the lungs or vegetables?
Question by : What are great healthy fruits for the lungs or vegetables?
Best answer:
Answer by Paul
All berries, especially blueberries and strawberries. Bananas, Mangoes, Pomegranates, Black or red grapes, Kiwis, Pears. Apples are ok but just about every other fruit outdoes them in nutritional value.
Remember that fruits contain quite a bit of sugars, although much healthier than say soda pop or candy sugars you still need to get the right amount of exercise.
Hot Peppers (Considered Fruits) are great if you can stomach them, the hotter the better. Put them in stews/soups, steam or cook them. Hot peppers (Jalapenos, Serranos, Chiles, etc) are loaded with a chemical called Capsicum, which stimulates your body to sweat and boosts your metabolism. Plus they are loaded with vitamin c and other minerals. Even the milder Anaheims and Pablanos are helpful. Plain bell peppers lack the spice benefit but are still packed with nutrients.
As far as vegetables Asparagus, Celery, Broccoli and Beets top my list. I don’t think there is really an “unhealthy” vegetable out there.
Avoid eating lots of corn or corn products (corn chips, Doritos, etc). Though it is not a vegetable it contains lots of unhealthy sugars and fats if you eat too much of it.

I’m so sorry for your dog, and also sorry I don’t have an answer for you. Maybe the vet should do a chest X-ray to see if there’s cancer or just infection. Try posting your question in the pets-dogs section. There may be other pet owners who have had similar experiences. (Your question posted in the human section.)
Good luck…

“nodule(s) found in my lung(s)?
Question by myheartisjames: “nodule(s) found in my lung(s)?
i am waiting to get a hard copy of the report. but the other day my primary care doctor’s office called to say that my routine x-ray done before bladder surgery showed a nodule… didn’t say where or how big or whatever.. just said they wanted me to have another chest x-ray in 3 MONTHS to see if it has grown. Three Months is a long time to wait. Have you heard about people having nodules and what sort of chance there is that it is lung cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by chocolate.freckles
Nodules are generally not cancer. They are more like cysts. Three months is just a follow up Xray. If it were serious, they would not have you wait that long.
