Q&A: what is a ct chest scan with contrast mean? and what could they be looking for?
Question by J N003: what is a ct chest scan with contrast mean? and what could they be looking for?
Help??
My mum went for a 2nd chest x-ray this week as they said the first x-ray showed a slight shadowing on her lung. Today we have a received a letter stating she needs a ct chest scan with contrast? Im very very scared as the letter was dated the same day as her actual 2nd scan, so there seems to be some urgency there? Its booked for 9days time. Im scared as well as i only lost my dad to bladder cancer 3months ago and my mum is still suffering badly from this event too, i haven’t got the heart to tell her about this letter as im sure the panic and worry of it would kill her! She’s in her 80′s with alot of other medical complications too, i’m so worried, does it mean she could have the ‘c’ word? Sh’s been suffering with a cough since my father died that will not go away and also she is short of breath, sometimes her cough can be quite mucusy? but it mainly feels like an irratated tickle? She doesn’t have COPD or pneumonia? well, im not sure now to be honest, im just hoping and praying it’s not cancer!

Answer by formerly_bob
A shadow on a chest x-ray, cough that lasts more than 4 weeks, and shortness of breath could be caused by pneumonia. The shadow could also be some type of cancer or other lung problem. You can just tell your grandmother that the doc needs to get a more detailed x-ray of the lung to figure out if she has a lung infection or some other type of problem.

Q&A: What does it mean when an interviewer says that she doesn’t have any more questions for you…?
Question by brubbletrubble: What does it mean when an interviewer says that she doesn’t have any more questions for you…?
Aside from the obvious that she has no more questions to ask..I recently when on an interview for a large company (I had made it up to round 3 of an interview for a position in skin cancer, but wasnt chosen and was invited i interview for head and neck cancer since that is more suited towards my goals). I had told her that I had interviewed with the company prior and from my perspective, the interview went well..only it only lasted 25 mins (my other at this stage was 45 and i was asked intense questions for the same position/different dept). I was simply asked 2 how would you handle this situation ?s and a few regarding my past experience. Also, I wasn’t given a business card but told id hear back soon from herself or HR. What are my chances of getting a third interview? Did she cut the interview short bc she knew i was not the right candidate or because I obviously was fit/qualified for the position seeing that I had already met with others? Has this happened to anyone else and there been a positive outcome? Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated
Best answer:
Answer by bull_rooster_aardvark
I suspect that either she cut it short because she felt you were not right, or that is just her style – to only ask a few things and make a determination based on that (and maybe she was running short of time). This could be a bad thing or could just be neutral – but hey, you’ll know soon enough so don’t sweat it.

Best answer:
Answer by Isness
The lungs are not empty pouches that you breath air in and out of. They are organs that have a spong like appearance, where the internal part of the lung is made of of little tiny air pockets. I don’t think this is what your doctor is refering to when he mentions holes. As far as redness in the face is concerned, the quality and rate of your breathing effects the heart, which in turn effects blood pressure and hence, the amount of color (or lack of color) in the face. As far as stiff joints are concerned? I’m sorry, I don’t know. My advice would be to get off of those ciggarettes as fast as possible, drink lots of fresh water, take flax seed oil, berry juice and veggies. Don’t change your diet to this overnight. But make it gradual. I wish you the best.

Q&A: What could it mean if a stage 4 breast cancer patient had “fluid in the heart”?
Question by gg: What could it mean if a stage 4 breast cancer patient had “fluid in the heart”?
Sorry, details are not available.
She is getting treatment in Mexico, and that is the only info I have.
She already has the breast cancer in her lungs and bones.
She just went for her first chemo treatment, but before the treatment, they got the cardio results, and the “water on the heart” diagnosis came up….
Is this typical of something for breast cancer patients?
Please don’t cut and paste from self-diagnosis websites.
I need to know your personal knowlege and experiences with this occurence.
(Do most b cancer patients have this when the cancer has spread to the heart?)

what does the numbers at the end mean?
Question by : what does the numbers at the end mean?
i found this website but i don’t know what the numbers at the end of the ingredients mean and why some don’t have numbers. is this some kind of recipe
Juniper: Acts as a diuretic, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and relieves inflammation and congestion. Helpful in treatment of asthma, ladder infection, fluid retention, gout, kidney problems, obesity and prostate disorders.(2)
Fennel: Used as an appetite suppressant. Promotes the functioning of the kidneys, liver and spleen and also clears the lungs. Relieves abdominal pain, colon disorders, gas and gastrointestinal tract cramping. Used for acid stomach. Good after chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments for cancer.(2)
Mugwart: Used in cases of internal bleeding, worms and bad breath. It is an antidote for many poisonous mushrooms. Mugwart has nervine qualities that are excellent for treating uncontrollable shaking, nervousness and insomnia. Externally it has been used as the active substance in liniment for sprains, bruises and lumbago (lower back pain).
Geranium: In addition to acting as a diuretic, geranium oil also has cicatrisant properties which helps scars and mars on the skin to fade and vanish. It promotes cell health and also encourages recycling of dead cell and regeneration of new cells. It is a tonic, helping body systems and functions to work properly by influencing endocinal glands for regulating the secretion of various hormones, enzymes, acids and bile, etc. It tones the respiratory system, digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system and excretory system. Geranium oil is also a vermifuge, helping to rid the body of intestinal parasites.(5)
Lavender: Relieves stress and depression and is beneficial for the skin. Good for burns, headaches, psoriasis and skin problems.
Orange: High in vitamin C and other substances like pectin, minerals and lignans which have specific properties themselves. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is required for tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function and healthy gums. It protects against the harmful effects of pollution and aids in the production of anti-stress hormones and interferon and is needed for the metabolism of folic acid, tyrosine and phenylalanine. He3lps to prevent cancer, protects against infection and enhances immunity. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron. It also may reduce cholesterol levels and high blood pressure and prevent atherosclerosis. Essential in the formation of collagen, which is used to make connective tissue for skin elasticity.
Peppermint: Enhances digestion by increasing stomach acidity. Slightly anesthetizes mucous membranes and the gastrointestinal tract. It is useful for chills, colic, diarrhea, headache, heart trouble, indigestion, nausea, poor appetite, rheumatism and neurotoxin reactions.
Capsicum: Promotes perspiration, which anyone who has eaten any “hot” food should know from experience. Capsicum influences the flow of digestive secretions form salivary, gastric and intestinal glands. It improves the ratio of (HDL) cholesterol which decreases heart disease risk. When placed on the spine as an extract it allows other herbs to be absorbed in the body rapidly and this is called an herbal adjustment.
Jojoba: Natural jojoba oil serves as an excellent moisturizing agent with exceptional spreading and lubrication properties and leaves a rich velvety non-oily feel on the skin while retarding water loss and enhancing the flexibility and suppleness of the skin. It is completely miscible with the natural sebum of the skin, forming a very thin, not greasy lipid layer. This layer is partially porous and provides exceptional trans-epidermal respiration and moisture control. Unlike greasy occlusive materials such as petrolatum, mineral oils and some lanolin products, jojoba oil provides and absolutely non-tacky, non-oily, non-greasy, “dry” softening to the skin.
Cinnamon: Metabolism booster and natural fat burner. Relieves diarrhea and nausea, counteracts congestion, aids the peripheral circulation of the blood. Warms the body and enhances digestion; especially the metabolism of fats. Also fights fungal infection. It is useful for digestive problems, diabetes, weight loss, yeast infection and uterine hemorrhaging.(4)

Q&A: What do small white spots in your lungs on an x-ray mean?
Question by : What do small white spots in your lungs on an x-ray mean?
I had a chest xray yesterday, and there are a few white masses in my lungs as well as a few small, solid white spots that are just as dense as my bones. What could this be?
(I have a doctors appointment tomorrow to discuss results but I’m a bit worried)
The white spots are all through. Not confined to one particular area.
The white masses look like solid white cobwebs and are concentrated particularly in the upper area of the lungs and also to the sides
Best answer:
Answer by Tammy B
Large white areas on either side of the heart are called the hilum. The hilum is the area where the blood vessels and bronchi are concentrated in the lung. Other white spots could be blood vessels standing on end.
If the spot is abnormal it could be all sorts of things from masses to pneumonia.
Depends on where and what the spots look like.

can ronchi be ascultated in normal chest, i mean having no respiratory disease?
Question by dranil2000: can ronchi be ascultated in normal chest, i mean having no respiratory disease?
Best answer:
Answer by Menthoids
Not in a normal chest …..
Rhonchi is the “coarse rattling sound somewhat like snoring, usually caused by secretion in bronchial airways”. Rhonchi is the plural form of the singular word “rhonchus”.
It is an abnormal or adventitious sound heard when listening to the chest as the person breathes. Wheezing noises are heard during inspiration, expiration or both. They are present when an airway is partially obstructed owing to secretions, mucosal swelling, or tumor tissue pressing on the passage. The sounds are gurgling noises heard on auscultation of the lungs with a stethoscope during inhalation or exhalation. The sounds are caused by the flow of air through thick mucous secretions in the larger air passages such as the bronchioles but can also be associated with smaller structures such as the alveoli.
Rhonchi can be heard in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute or severe bronchitis. COPD is an all inclusive syndrome that stems from the reduction of surface area associated with emphysema and the production of mucous secretions, bronchospasm and inflammation associated with bronchitis.

And that some sort of panel to advise people since the cost of chronic illness and end of life illness consumed a huge proportion of medical costs. Twice I’ve seen these quotes, but does he even once combine the two terms, thereby conveniently leaving the door open to gosh only knows what. He was originally speaking of his grandmother and her co-morbid conditions, so it would be expected that the phrase he spoke would be , people which chronic multiple conditions that are near the end of their lives, but he didn’t. I can’t imagine this was as accident as we all know how craftily he prepares his speech. Was this an ignorant oversight, or was is an attempt to mislead. Here is a list of chronic illness’s Chronic fatigue syndrome

I’ve been told that I already received the max dose of radiation, doesn’t that mean I can never have it again?
Question by ♥ Animal Luvr ♥: I’ve been told that I already received the max dose of radiation, doesn’t that mean I can never have it again?
I didn’t know there was a “max dose” until my treatment was complete. I received the max dose of radiation and it was concentrated in my pelvis for cervical cancer and nodes, but it also extended all the way up to my armpits because there were lymph nodes higher too and they were worried it had microscopically spread even higher, they were playing it safe they said by going higher than shown just to make sure nothing was missed. Now I am anxiously awaiting another PET scan in a week which will show if theres any activity, last scan showed a tiny speck on the cervix itself and if its still there I was told surgery is the only option. I asked why I couldn’t have radiation for just that spot and I was told that I can never have radiation again because I received the max dose, any more is toxic apparantly?
Can someone please explain this a little better?
I am worried, because now I am at increased risk for other cancers as well since I already had CC and I had radiation which increases risk. If I found cancer say, breast cancer, could I be treated with radiation for it? I am really worried that the over-compensation in the radiation may have cost me the chance to ever have radiation again if I need it. I am trying to remain calm about it but I think this is something that should have been discussed with me prior to giving me the max dose so I would understand the risks and benefits of getting the max dose and have some input on the decision making process.

Radiation is a very dangerous substance to humans. It corrupts us on the cellular level. Radiation therapy works because cancer cells are more susceptible to radiation. I think it was the right choice to use the maximum radiation in the beginning. That way you remove as much as the cancer as possible, but hopefully all of it.

Can swollen underarm lymph nodes mean cancer?
Question by Cornisha B: Can swollen underarm lymph nodes mean cancer?
I am a 16 year old african-american girl with a wide family history on both family sides of cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, tumors, and diabetes. Because of my current weight of obesity and because I’m african american and a female, it puts me in high risk in all areas. I currently have a swollen lymph node underneath my armpit that is slightly sore but worsens when I touch it. My mother, who is not biological, states that they are normal for her and that you are suppose to squeeze them to release the fluid. She says that if that does not work, you have to report to the doctor and that they will surgically remove them with a knife and pack it, and that these swollen lymph nodes are due to anti-perispants that irritate your underarm. I don’t know if all of this is true, but these swollen lymph nodes keep occuring under my armpit every once in a while. They don’t get very big, but they do get sore. I frequently experience pain even though the doctors say I am healthy. Am I ok?

It could be a cyst or a boil. Your best bet is to show it to a doctor. I don’t recommend popping it when you don’t know what it is! If it’s an infection, you could force some of it back into your blood stream, and that’s not good.

Heyy is this any good? Be as mean and cruel as you want!?
Question by : Heyy is this any good? Be as mean and cruel as you want!?
Hey guys Natalie here and I am writing a book but I need major help with the editing! Thanks
I opened the door and felt a blast of cool air trickle up my spine. I quickly shut the door cutting of the wind. Usually, I would walk to the grocery store on Saturdays but today the wind was swirling through the air like a mad hurricane and the snow was coming down hard, it looked like the snow on the TV screen when the TV is messed up, I am not really sure of the correct term since I hardly know anything about electronics. I heard the phone ring, I slid across the floor on my fuzzy slippers rushing to get to the phone. I am hoping it is my mom with news on how my dad was doing. My dad has been sick in the hospital with lung cancer for a year now, and things aren’t getting better. Nervously, I picked up the phone and said,
“Hello?” Crossing my fingers as I pulled the phone closer to my ear.
“Hello, Is this…” She paused for a moment, like she forgot what she was going to say.
“Lorelei?” The Woman said with a bit of excitement as she remembered my name.
“Yes” I said hoping I didn’t sound as disappointed as I truly was.
“Are you familiar with the name, Ashlyn Maya Sydney?” The woman said waiting for a response.
“Yes, she’s my sister…” I said with a little worry in my voice
“She and her husband are in the hospital, they were in a serious car crash…” She said a little shyly.
I hung up the phone and quickly grabbed my jacket and threw on a pair of shoes.
I rushed getting to the hospital. There was only one hospital in this small town we lived in so I knew they would be there. The ride there was so uncomfterable, and awkward even though it was just me in the car. I started to think of every single thing I loved about Ashlyn and her husband Ross. I loved how Ashlyn took amazing care of their beautiful son Rossin, the name was a combination of the parents, Ross and Lyn. And their little girl who was born only a few weeks ago Roslyn or known as Rosie. What was going to happen to the kids? As I pulled in to the closest parking space I slammed the car door and ran towards the ER doors.
Thanks! (be as mean as u want!)

The air quality in the areas that you’ve named is very poor, the lung calcifications that you have will probably effect the air/oxygen exchange when you travel to these places. The doctors have told you these things to protect you from getting over to another country and getting sicker.
I hope that you find another area you can go to where you can make money for your family. God bless.

Spots on the lungs other than cancer are called solitary pulmonary nodules which are oval shape or round lesions seen on the chest x-ray and CT scan. These spots are benign. One reason is inflammation of the granular tissues due to infection on the lungs. This infection can be due to fungus like Cryptococcus, histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis and aspergillosis. TB (Tuberculosis) is other condition which causes spots on lungs.
These spots or solitary pulmonary nodules can also be due to some other diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or sarcoidosis. Chest injury can also result in to lung spots.
Another common non cancerous spot in lungs is hamartoma which is a clump of tissues.
After confirming spots on lungs by x-ray or CT scan, a repeat CT scan is recommended after every six months for 2 years to know the growth of the lesion. If spots don’t grow in size for the 2 years then these are noncancerous.
Don’t think about lung cancer yet….it could be nothing…I wish her luck.

cancer? alcoholism and anorexia are not diseases, they are developed because of insecurities of weak minded people. To say you have a disease when you like to get drunk or stop eating because you want to look like a model is a slap in the face to people with brain tumors, lung cancer, and breast cancer.
Paul B- you have some serious growing up to do (start with your icon and attitude). People have the right to voice their opinion without trolls like you talking crap to them.

If you are trying to interpret an xray and are not a radiologist, don’t try.
Leave it to the professionals to interpret and explain to you.
Dark spots on an xray can be several things, from shadows to tumors. No way to tell unless you’re specifically trained to read them.
