My dad is overweight with a serious medical condition. Can you help me find a hospital with a petscan?

Question by Kate: My dad is overweight with a serious medical condition. Can you help me find a hospital with a petscan?
My dad had colon cancer 4 years ago but was told by the doctors that he was clear of it after they removed 1/3rd of his colon. In the past month, they have discovered that the cancer spread to his lung. The doctors said that it is incredibly unlikely that it would spread from his colon to his lung directly without first infecting something else. He is in desperate need of a pet scan. This procedure will immediately tell the doctors if and where there are any more cancer cells. Unfortunately, my dad is obsese, weighing in at 498 lbs. He has only been able to find hospitals that can accomodate a 450 lb. person on the petscan table. It seems unconstitutional that anyone should be turned away from life-saving medical care because they are obese. I need to help him find a hospital that can accomodate someone of his size.

Best answer:

Answer by arielsalom33
well, that is unfortunate that your having a hard time finding a PET scan big enough for your dad. Im not sure if there is one that will accomodate him, but I work at Barnes Jewish hospital in St. Louis, MO. It is the number 8 hospital in the nation, and I think it would be worth while to look into it. They may have something to offer him. Good luck.

Why don’t people realize that the Medical and Pharmaceutical professions are swindling them?

Question by schwing4u2: Why don’t people realize that the Medical and Pharmaceutical professions are swindling them?
Do people ever wonder why medical insurance pays for lots of medications (drugs) for many ailments, yet they never seem to pay for any preventative care items.? Things like vitamins, supplements, etc.

Do people realize that the Pharmaceutical industry is the one creating the drugs that cause things like cancer, heart disease, obesity, IBS, ADD, etc.?

Do others see that it isn’t in the Medical and Pharmaceutical professions best interest to have a healthy society? Why don’t people stand up and make “noise” about it?

Medical advice please for below symptoms?

Question by : Medical advice please for below symptoms?
I’m in mid 20′s and a guy. Please advice if you are a medical doctor.

I have cold + cough (producing white color (phlegm or mucus or whatever)) since past 3 days. I did not smoke / drink.

I felt warm in mouth (temperature) yesterday but did not have fever as such measured from outside. I’m not finding difficult to breath but inhalation is producing sounds since past 2-3 days. Also, if I carry any weight on my shoulders (bag) since past 2-3 days and climb stairs quickly, breathing becomes little heavier. Without weight on shoulders, I’m fine. This is since 2-3 days.

I have gas problems for whatever I eat since past year or more.

I’m not sure what is chest tightedness but I dont have prob on chest.

My lung PA xray was good with no problems cited by radiologist but in my blood test IGE (eosinopholis) is high as usual with no other problem with hemoglobin or WBC etc. I had urticaria months ago.. but its good now.

I’ve been to a chest physician but I find it difficult to trust him because of some incidents — is he correct here?
> The attendant was holding my lung an xray right at the center. I thought we are not supposed to touch the image :-o
> The doctor made me conduct a pulmonary function test. I had poor results (20% of what is required :-o ) but I believed I have cold and cough and thus might not be able to breath with full pressure. I hope that is correct.
> Also, he happened to say that since my lungs show as black in the x-ray, they depict obstruction i.e. asthma. My radiologist who was in-charge of x-ray has written the air passage is clear and written “no lung diseases found”. I later found from internet that black is representation of air; Grey is fat etc.

I somewhere believe that asthma can be best cured with homeopathic or Ayurveda medicine ? Is that true ?

I dont want to keep taking chemicals / steroids for some or other problem and live on them. How should I proceed ?

I’m sorry if this is rude but most doctors around are there only to eat money in different ways.

Answer by Belliger
Hello,

(I’m a retired UK doctor)

It’s difficult to believe that you have only had your chest problems for the last 3 days. You say, “as usual,” in relation to your IgE (eosinophils), – and you are lucky if you have achieved all these X rays and tests in just the last 72 hours, .

I suspect that you have had a diagnosis of asthma for a while, – and that your present troubles are just down to an acute cold, and to that cold going down onto your chest?

Asthma as you know, is air-tube spasm, caused by the muscles lining the air-tubes going into spasm. When they relax, – and when they can be made or forced to relax, by giving an inhaler spray, – then the air-tube spasm, and the wheeze, goes away.

You should have discovered, if you have been using a Ventolin inhaler, whether this does in fact work, to relieve your wheeze and spasm? If it does work, then you have asthma.

There is a simple pulmonary function test which shows this same effect in a more scientific way, – called your “peak flow rate,” (PFR), – you blow as hard and as fast as you can down a tube, and this spins a needle around a clock-face thing. Then you do the same again, but after using a Ventolin inhaler. If you have asthma, then the second reading is much better (higher) than the first.

I don’t think a Chest X ray is diagnostic of reversible airway spasm, (asthma), no. However, if you have lungs which are always over-inflated, – i.e. you have “emphysema,” pronounced em- fizz – ZEE” – mur, – then the picture may look a bit overly-black.

This is your long-term question, in my opinion. Do you have simple, reversible asthma, OR do you have air-tube obstruction which is not fully reversible, – this is called “chronic bronchitis and emphysema,” or “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” or COPD for short.

You seem a bit young to me, to have COPD. I would have thought you were much more likely, to have straightforward asthma in your mid 20′s. Especially if you haven’t smoked.

I don’t think your doctors have been at fault, but I think they are maybe not explaining things properly to you.

I think you might like to ask them next time, do you think I have emphysema?

I hope this is of some help.

Best wishes,

Belliger

Answer by Lila
with hernias, the person usually has a long wait before surgery. the treatment is to stuff the bulge back into the body cavity and hold it with the hernia belt.
the test is hold the bulge and cough. if it bulges out upon coughing, likely is a hernia.
i hope it is not.

medical q – PLEASE HELP!?

malignant lung cancer
by Pulmonary Pathology

Question by judelove: medical q – PLEASE HELP!?
I am a 53 year old women, average weight, and fairly healthy. In the summer of ’07 I went to the gyno and found that I had 2 tumors behind my uteris. They were not malignant, and they successfully removed them as well as my uterus. In the Fall of ’08 I had blood in my flem, and coughed up some blood. I went to the doctor and they believed I had pneumonia, although they were not sure. I also had adema in my calves and feet, although it did not last long (about 2 days). Occasionally my tongue will swell up and I accidentally bite my checks, and for awhile I had rashes on my arms. Ever since this happened I have been to the doctor many times. At a point I was even going weekly. I just received back results saying that I have high protein in my urine as well as microscopic blood. My cholestrol levels (and HDL and LDL) levels raised greatly too. I had an appointment planned for weeks ahead, but the doctor called and told me I have to come in Monday. I am very worried and am asking for answers. Also, I drink some, and my father passed away from lung cancer recently. Any help would be greatful!

Medical technologist qualifications in New York?

Question by Jiggidy: Medical technologist qualifications in New York?
I have a B.S. in Chemistry and have worked two years in an environmental testing lab. I was thinking about the medical technologist position. The website that details the requirements is pretty broad in explaining exactly what a person needs after receiving a degree other than medical technology, Any medical technologists out there who can fill me in?

Best answer:

Answer by Pandas4me
I’m not a med tech, but I do know some. I think you would need to take a specialty exam for chemistry.I think if you looked at the ASCP website, it may help you some. have you thought about going to a hospital lab and talk with some of the techs? they may have some suggestions for you. also see if there is a med tech program at any of the colleges near you and see if any of the professors there could give you some guidance. good luck!

Does government funded medical insurance cover treatments for smoking related ailments?

Question by ?: Does government funded medical insurance cover treatments for smoking related ailments?
For example, if someone has medicaid or medicare and has been diagnosed with lung cancer…would chemotherapy be covered? I am just curious because I know that the government makes a lot of money from the idiots who smoke (cuz they are so addicted they wont stop buying the damn things no matter how much taxes they have to pay on them). It seems counter productive for them to turn around and use those same tax dollars treating smokers. After all, millions die each years so the majority of the time it is money wasted. Even if they did pull through, they will probably go back to smoking and do we really want someone that stupid wasting space anyway?

I hope it isn’t covered. As a matter of fact NO insurance should cover treatment for smoking related ailments. If they are stupid enough to smoke they should pay for it totally out of pocket. They should just let them all die off. Its evolution, survival of the fittest. That way only the smarter people will go on to reproduce and hopefully eventually people will just stop (after the dumb ones kill themselves of course).

Also..why is it legal to do something that is proven to be deadly? Assisted suicide for people who are suffering is illegal but perfectly healthy people are allowed to give themselves cancer? I just don’t get it i guess.

And by the way…dont compare this to alcohol. MOST people who drink alcohol are NOT alcoholics, but MOSTLY everyone who smokes is extremely addicted. its not the same.

Best answer:

Answer by Flower
A lot of seniors who have lung cancer developed it early on before there were warning labels on cigarette packs, at a time when most people smoked and did not know it was addictive, let alone carcinogenic due to mass campaign by tobacco lobby to hide the truth. That has past. I wonder why kids continue to smoke these days with all the information available about smoking and how can they afford to smoke at $ 5 a pack? However, we dont discriminate in treating sick people because they did not take care of themselves. We treat the end result and doctors must treat everyone.

Remember that Medicare was paid for by payroll taxes by people who worked for 40 years and continue to pay a share of Medicare every month as well as the usual co-pays and co-insurance.

Whatever you think of subsidized programs, remember that government subsidizes industry for much more than it does people on Medicare.

3 Medical Ethic Questions …..Who is good at answering these?

Question by DontCriticizeRealize: 3 Medical Ethic Questions …..Who is good at answering these?
3 Medical Ethic Questions …..Who is good at answering these?? I need your expert opinions on these 3 cases, please any opinions for each case will help please read over and answer. thanks

Case 1

A 43 year old man was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer, and he was given 6 months to live. The physician provides encouragement, modifying his diet and lifestyle, and prescribing medications. The patient agrees with the management plan, and gave instructions to his doctor not to discuss this with anyone. 3 days later, the patient’s spouse calls the physician asking about her husband’s condition. The wife is actually the physician’s first cousin. What action should the physician take?

Case 2

While in residency training, a junior resident physician discovers that the chief resident is taking amphetamines while working the night shift in the ER. The junior resident tells his department head but was given instructions to keep this incident to himself. If you are the junior resident, what would you do?

Case 3

In the Internal Medicine clinic, you were assigned to handle a 45 year old man with chronic liver disease, known to have a very bad temper. He constantly argues with the nursing staff while in the reception area of the clinic, and when you examine him, he would always have very rude comments to you, saying things like “Do you know what you are doing?” “Are you a real doctor?” What would be the best course of action?

Best answer:

Answer by Ally H
Case 1: If the patient gave explicit instructions to not speak of his condition with anyone then the doctor should not give the spouse any information. This is the basis of the HIPPA laws. The only way the doctor could legally give out the information to the man’s spouse is if the man with the cancer had given prior consent, in writing.

Case 2: This one is a bit tougher. What is the reason for taking the amphetamines? Does the chief resident have ADHD and needs something like Adderall to help keep him focused? Or is the chief resident taking “speed” because he is addicted to it? If the first, keep it to yourself because without the drugs the chief resident may be unable to successfully treat patients. If the second, do not keep the situation to yourself because lives are at stake and the amphetamines may cause harm.

Case 3: This is a typical patient. You must keep yourself calm and collected and never let your own temper get the best of you. Answer all his questions (as rude as they may be) to the best of your ability giving examples to alleviate any concerns he may have over your ability to treat him. Treat him with respect and attempt to make him as comfortable as possible. Having a good bedside manner is sometimes just as important as having medical knowledge. Knowing how to deal with people in stressful situations is important, too. There are a lot of people like this out there. Being in the medical field means you need to know how to handle them.

Exposing the Myth of Smoked Medical Marijuana / Anti-Marijuana PSA Video

Exposing the Myth of Smoked Medical Marijuana / PSA VideoExposing the Myth of Smoked Medical Marijuana. Q. Does marijuana have any medical value? Any determination of a drug’s valid medical use must be based on the best available science undertaken by medical professionals. The Institute of Medicine conducted a comprehensive study in 1999 to assess the potential health benefits of marijuana and its constituent cannabinoids. The study concluded that smoking marijuana is not recommended for the treatment of any disease condition. In addition, there are more effective medications currently available. For those reasons, the Institute of Medicine concluded that there is little future in smoked marijuana as a medically approved medication. Advocates have promoted the use of marijuana to treat medical conditions such as glaucoma. However, this is a good example of more effective medicines already available. According to the Institute of Medicine, there are six classes of drugs and multiple surgical techniques that are available to treat glaucoma that effectively slow the progression of this disease by reducing high intraocular pressure. In other studies, smoked marijuana has been shown to cause a variety of health problems, including cancer, respiratory problems, increased heart rate, loss of motor skills, and increased heart rate. Furthermore, marijuana can affect the immune system by impairing the ability of T-cells to fight off infections, demonstrating that marijuana can do

How has increased computer processing speed and the Internet contributed to recent medical breakthroughs?

cancer of the heart
by AncestralHealthSymposium

Question by kathy_is_a_nurse: How has increased computer processing speed and the Internet contributed to recent medical breakthroughs?
Hi…I’m helping an author write a book. He needs some specific examples of recent medical breakthroughs (say in the last 10 years or so), new drugs, or innovations made possible by the increased processing speed of computers and/or the ability to communicate quickly over long distances via technologies such as the Internet. Suggestions can be in any aspect of medicine, but we are especially interested in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or obesity.

The more specific details or links you can provide the better, since we will have to source our references in the book.

Thanks to everyone who contributes.

Well, the Folding @ home project was a major breakthrough with computers using distributed computing.

What it did was had tons of people around the world download and install a program that ran while they were not using their computer. These programs processed small bits of information to help the main computers process Protein folding.

Medical Marijuana 411 YouTube Video (www.medicalmarijuana411.com) interview with Emily Sander, student and lymphoma cancer survivor talks about how she utilized medical marijuana as a positive part of her treatment. Currently, lymphoma free, Emily talks about the benefits of medical marijuana as part of her treatment regimen. Emily had particular issues with nausea due to taking more than 7 different pain medications including vicodin and oxycontin. A non drug user all of her life, Emily turned to the medicinal use of marijuana to counter the side effects of her nausea, headaches and chemotherapy treatments. Transcript follows: I was lucky not to get too much nausea, I only got it occasionally which was good. But of course when I took my pain medication I was nauseous. Which was very silly. Oxy-contin Vicodine and any kind of medicines they give for pain which I went through 6 or 7 different ones that didnt make feel really sick and actually worked. That was a pain. But yeah, if I took the nausea medication so I could take my pain medication it gave me a headache. There were so many side effects for the medication I was trying to take to make me feel better. The medical marijuana was great cause I didnt have any of those side effects other than leaving me a little tired, which was great I didnt have to worry about insomnia! Which was becoming a problem, Id never had a problem sleeping in my entire life just lay there going what why cant I fall asleep. Helping me eat
