Question by Silva: Re: Patrick Swayze. If you had pancreatic cancer would you follow the western medicine recomendations ..?
Such as chemo…even though the statistics for survival are grim?
Or would you try an alternative treatment?
Doing both is an option many choose and usually also with grim results. Many alternative approaches focus on returning your body to its FULL fighting capacity…impossible under the effects of chemo.
Shows that supposedly “discuss” both sides give watered down versions of the alternative treatments, at least the ones I’ve seen and are geared mainly towards glorifying mainstream medicine.
The whole idea of “proven to work” is so tied up in who has the MONEY to fund “research” that they then can manipulate. A 4% 1 year survival rate sounds MIGHTY grim to me…don’t think anything alternative, diligently and comprehensively applied can be worse than that!!
Many times people undertake a half hearted and diluted alternative measure after all conventional therapies have left them hopeless.
I would WELCOME the true study of a diligently applied TOTAL immersion into a natural healing approach sans the poisons!
Thumbs up for all!!

Michael Landon had pancreatic cancer as well. He took the adage “laughter is the best medicine”. He didn’t survive, but he probably enjoyed the life he had left better.
Breaking Bad, the TV series that airs on Sunday nights, started with this same theme. The pro and con arguments were all discussed in the last segment.

Which fields of medicine pay the highest salaries? Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Surgeons? What about malpractice insurance premiums, the highest, the lowest?
I think if I was going to persue a medical career, I would choose psychiatry because of all the breakthroughs recently in brain chemistry or dermatology because the new treatments for skin cancer and acne.

Would vaporizing marijuana be an acceptable way for someone with lung cancer to get their medicine?
Question by : Would vaporizing marijuana be an acceptable way for someone with lung cancer to get their medicine?
My mom has been diagnosed with lung cancer for the second time. I know smoking is not an option but she lost 30 lbs in 1 week after her first dose. If (and that’s a big if) i can convince my mom to at least try using marijuana to help ease her stomach and help her eat (and after she talks to her doctor) would vaping be reasonably easy on her lungs or should i make edibles and if that’s the only option how do you figure out tolerance on someone who has never smoked? I dont wanna send my mom into a freak-out.

Strontium-90 is a β-emitter which is used in medicine, for cancer radiation therapy?
Question by : Strontium-90 is a β-emitter which is used in medicine, for cancer radiation therapy?
Strontium-90 is a β-emitter which is used in medicine, for cancer radiation therapy, and in industry in devices to measure thickness. Sr-90 has a half-life of 29 years. How long does 1 g of Sr-90 have to be stored for it to decay to 0.5 g? 0.001 g?
Best answer:
Answer by jjasso5
1.-
If it goes from 1g to 0.5g, then it takes 29 years (that’s exactly the definition of half-life!)
- – - -
2.-
Beginning amount = 1g
Final amount = 0.001g
Half-life = 29 yrs
the formula is time = HL * log10( beg_amt / fin_amt ) / log10(2)
then
Elapsed time = 289 yrs
I suggest you see this explanation and calculator

Is “alternative” medicine a scam?
Question by mantastic86: Is “alternative” medicine a scam?
I have asthma and am told to stay away from conventional products such as soap, shampoos, sunscreens, deodorants, toothpastes, and mouthwashes cause of the chemicals.
I am told to STOP using dial soap, colgate toothpaste, right guard deodorant and head & shoulders and start using alternative products such as Toms of Maine and Aubrey and Dr Bronner products from a health food store that are “natural and safe.” Im sorry but natural products DONT DO THE JOB when it comes to personal hygiene. I have tryed these natural products and they didnt get me clean and they did not keep body odor away for long. Not only that I tryed toms of maine toothpaste without floruide and i had two more cavities. the dentist told me to go back to uysing conventional toothpaste with fluoride.
Is their any scientific evidence that these natural and alternative products are any safer or any better? I never hear of anyone getting cancer from dial soap or Colgate toothpaste. I think the Food and Drug and Administration regulates conventional products like dial and colgate and others to ensure their safety. I dont like spending $ 2.50 for a bar of Toms of Maine soap or Dr Bronners soap just because its “natural.”
Here is a website that says to focus more on natural products for safety..www.goodguide.com.
I think alternative anything is a scam. I want scientific proof or facts to back up claims to make sure some products are unsafe and will cause cancer. Otherwise im going back to using conventional products. Anyone got any good websites or knowledge dubunking alternative myths? Does anyone agree with me? Whats your stance on “alternative products?” Waste of money or not?
Best answer:
Answer by wickedstepmother
It sounds like the reason you were told to avoid Dial, Right Guard, etc. is more for avoidance of the fragrances. With asthma, fragrance can often trigger an attack. The “natural” products are usually fragrance free, hence the recommendation that you use them. Some of the natural products work just as well as the others and some don’t. It can be expensive trying the different products in an attempt to find those that work for you. In my own experience, most of the soaps, shampoos, deodorants, tampons, etc. do not perform as well as mainstream products. I haven’t had much success in finding many that I would buy again. As for whether it’s bunk or not, I can only say that I have worked in healthcare for a good number of years. I know very few physicians or nurses who purchase and use these “natural” products on a regular basis. If they were so much better/safer than what we can buy at the corner drug store, wouldn’t every doctor be using them? To me, it’s much like the ads you see for certain supplements that claim they will prevent cancer and all that. If these products really did that, every doctor in the US would be advising their patients to use them. Lots of people will come back at that and say no, doctor’s don’t tell you because they want your money. Well……BS is all I can say. Major drug companies, maybe. Individual doctors (or rather the majority of them) are practicing medicine because they truly want to help people. If there was a magic cure-all, they’d tell you about it, believe me!

Is regenerative medicine or stem cell regeneration a good way to battle cancer?
Question by jcL: Is regenerative medicine or stem cell regeneration a good way to battle cancer?
Hi! A close family member of mine was diagnosed with cancer and Regenerative medicine was proposed to us. Since it is very expensive i would like to know how effective it is.
Medical history of patient: Lung cancer that was surgically removed 3 years ago, had chemotherapy for 6 cycles. Middle of november 2008 was diagnosed as having a metasthasis to the brain.
Our problem now is very heavy and i would really appreciate it if an expert or someone who has had an experience with regenerative medicine could get in touch with us.
Anyway, i’d also like to say that nothing can match the effectiveness of prayers
as it is still a miracle that the patient is still with us and I thank God everyday for that
Thank you Jesus Christ, Holy Mother, St. Joseph and Padre Pio
To all: Pls pray for our family member whether you are budhist, muslim or christian
Thank you
Best answer:
Answer by Chris P
i personally dont believe it has a beneficial effect. most doctors say it will help but statistics say a majority of cancers come back after they do treatment.
have you noticed how its still there with all the treatment? Vitamin B17 is starting to come to light as the cure for cancer (not in america of course). and they have many cures overseas. i shouldnt be saying this considering my training, but the american medical system of doctors should not be your source for learning about cancer.
may peace be with you and your family no matter the outcome

Q&A: Use of human body in traditional Japanese medicine?
Question by James B: Use of human body in traditional Japanese medicine?
I read an article of Professor Tsuyoshi awaya :http://homepage1.nifty.com/awaya/hp/ronbun/r010.html
Say: The old Chinese pharmaceutical work “Bencaowangmu”(1596) describes how most parts of the human body, including bones, nail, hair, dandruff, earwax, impurities on the teeth, feces, urine, sweat, organs etc. can be used as medications against various ailments. The utilization of mummies as medicine was in fashion in Europe from the 15th to the 17th century where, it is said, human fat taken from the dead body was also utilized as medicine. There are examples of the brain, liver, lungs, heart, bone, flesh, and fetus being utilized as medicine in Japan in past times.
But I read as the dissection of human body was forbidden by law and buddhism.
the only ones who could do dissections were the eta by only on bodies of criminal.
I can not figure out how to get body parts to make medicines if the dissection was forbidden?

Medicine (Respiration)-Serious question about Airway collapse?
Question by The Half-Blood Prince: Medicine (Respiration)-Serious question about Airway collapse?
Hi everyone,
I’m a medical student and I have this research (for Physiology) about “Airway resistance and effect on airway collapse”.
For the Airway collapse part, I’m completely at a loss,
1) I don’t know should I put parts about COPD obstructive lung diseases (e.g. emphysema). Is it related to the subject or not?
2) Should I put parts about Restrictive lung diseases (e.g. Pulmonary fibrosis, thoracic cage deformity) or is it unrelated to the subject?
3) What other subjects do you advise me to write about for the Airway collapse.
I really need your opinion.
Thanks everyone..

Answer by Stagecoach
O.K. For what it’s worth, any capitalization below is only because there aren’t any italics/underlines/boldface types available – it’s not like you’re getting flamed.
1. First, you need to make sure you understand your question. Are they asking you for a PATHOphysiologic answer – that is, do they want you to relate this to a disease state, like COPD? If you’re just starting medical school, and you’re doing this for your introductory course in Physio, then COPD and restrictive lung diseases probably aren’t relevant yet.
2. Next, you’ve gotta make sure that YOU understand the underlying concept. So here’s a simple question: Do you understand the relationship between airway resistance and airway collapse…under normal conditions…in healthy lungs?
This isn’t the easiest stuff to grasp – and the truth is, the whole airway collapse theory has recently come under some criticism based on pretty recent research…which, to be blunt, I would expect a medical student, who’s ostensibly doing research, to be aware of. (If you’re not, then you need to get hot on understanding how to use PubMed. Like, white hot. Right now.)
3. Here’s a little help to get you started:
a) Answer this question: Suppose a person has just completed the exhalation phase of the respiratory cycle. They are now in that instant, that moment, between exhalation and inhalation. If we (arbitrarily) say that the ambient pressure at the person’s mouth (call it atmospheric pressure) is exactly zero, then what is the pressure in the alveoli?
A: Zero. Whether it’s mmHg, cmH2O, it doesn’t matter: The pressure throughout the entire respiratory tree is exactly zero, because THERE IS NO FLOW. Or, to put it another way: the only way you get airflow is if you have a pressure differential – either high pressure in the alveoli with relatively low pressure at the mouth, or vice versa. Here’s an attempt at a simple diagram of this phenomenon, where “a” is the alveolus, and “A” is the ambient atmosphere:
(a = 0) < -------------> (A = 0)
Let’s say the person just completed inhalation, and has now JUST STARTED exhaling:
(a = 10) —->——>—–> (A = 0)
In other words, air is flowing from alveoli to atmosphere – or, from HIGH pressure, to LOW pressure.
b) If you follow this line of reasoning, then it eventually becomes apparent that, from alveoli to the atmosphere (you can think of “the atmosphere” as pressure at the mouth), there is a continuum, a gradient, of pressure, that is higher in the alveoli, and MUST decrease as you move through the airway toward the mouth. (Remember: if the pressure is constant, from your air sacs to your blow hole, then how can anything move? You’d never be able to exhale.)
In actuality, the behavior of the lungs is ridiculously complex, owing to a phenomenon of interdependence between neighboring lobes, and lobules, and alveoli, and the effects they exert on each other. For simplicity’s sake, we’re going to think of the lung as, essentially, a single unit. So if we go back to our person who just started exhaling, we can think of the contraction of the chest wall, along with the elastic recoil of the lungs, as exerting pressure upon the lungs, and also the alveoli… and, also, THE AIRWAYS. This pressure contributes to the gradient that permits air to move out of the lungs to the atmosphere. Again, for simplicity’s sake, we’re going to assume that this pressure is EVENLY and EQUALLY distributed across the lungs, in a perfectly homogenous fashion. If the chest wall/recoil (CW/R) pressure is, say, 7, then using our diagram:
((CW/R = 7) + (a = 10)) ->->->->->->->-> (A = 0)
c) We have a pressure at the alveoli that, in this example, equals 17. (Like I said, mm, cm, guacamoles – the units don’t matter right now; we’re talking concepts here, not math). And, as we noted earlier, the only way air is gonna move from the alveoli to the mouth is if there is a pressure drop through the airways. So ask yourself this next question: If the CW/R pressure is 7….and the alveolar pressure is 10….but the pressure MUST decrease as we move along the airway, from the alveoli toward the mouth (or else the air won’t move)….then what happens at the point in the airway where the pressure drop from “a” to “A” becomes LESS than the CW/R pressure of 7?
A: The airway will start to collapse. Why? Because your CW/R pressure, which is acting uniformly across ALL parts of the lung, pressing down on the lung to force air out, now exceeds the pressure within the airway. The greater external pressure, applied to the outer walls of the airway, and acting INWARDLY, overcomes the internal pressure, within the airway, applied to the inner walls of the airway, and acting OUTWARDLY.
CW/R >> (a –>< -- A), where (a -->< -- A) is that "point," between the alveoli and the mouth (or Atmosphere), where the "pressure" inside and outside the airway is "equal." As in, Equal Pressure Point. From here, you should be able to get the rest of the way to your answer re the influence of airway resistance. Good luck.

Surgeon who specializes in tumor removals or alternative medicine?
Question by : Surgeon who specializes in tumor removals or alternative medicine?
My mother has had cancer for five years now, but this tumor began growing in July of 2010.
Because of many hassles with doctors, including lies claiming that it was a bug bite and then a cyst, even with our repeating that she has a history of cancer, we cannot remove it.
The main reason why Kaiser has refused to remove her tumor is because of a major artery it connects to. They said they can’t remove it without hitting that artery, which will put her onto life support until she dies.
I’m still searching for a miracle. I’ve seen on TV massive facial tumors being removed, and I’m searching for anything. The tumor covers the entire left side of her face now, and it’s beginning to cover her mouth. If we don’t find something out soon, it’s going to end up crushing her skull. We’re lucky that it hasn’t affected her brain yet.
So please, is there any surgeon ANYWHERE who might have a shot at this? Or any treatment that we can do? I’m desperate now, and the internet is all I have left to find a solution.
she’s had lymphoma, colon, and thyroid cancer.
my story shouldn’t make sense. it’s not my fault that we spent 6 months trying to force the doctors to do something just to hear over and over again that it was as small as a bug bite. the tumor is feeding off of the blood, so the doctor’s excuse is if it were to be removed, they would have to cut the arteries, and if one of them were to be altered she would either bleed to death or be put on life support.
honestly i really don’t care if it doesnt “make sense.” if you’re not here to help, then you might as well not say anything at all. I’m 17 years old with a dying mother, the one person in my family who supports me, the last thing I care about is if my story makes sense to you.

That’s probably not cancer, but a benign growth. Your second paragraph, I just don’t believe.
With her history of cancer, has she had surgery, chemo, radiation?? Tumors on the outside don’t crush your skull and if it’s not a cancerous tumor, it won’t affect her brain either. She can get her records and go to any other dr. On their opinion, can be referred to another hospital for their opinion. Or she can just go to another hospital also.

When the USA 5 year cancer death rate is higher than socialized medicine, how is that lying?
Question by Obama – Wimp in the White House: When the USA 5 year cancer death rate is higher than socialized medicine, how is that lying?
One poster asked a question about why republicans are distorting the truth about socialized medicine. Here is one fact – Cancer rates in the USA are much higher than in the rest of the world.
Everyone has access to the same drugs and same medical procedures. The question to ask is – why is there a difference between the USA and the rest of the world on cancer survival
According to the U.K.’s Office of National Statistics, the five-year relative survival rate for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer between 1993 and 1995 (and thus followed up to 1998 or 2000) was 59.8 percent, The National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results database puts concurrent U.S. rates at 95.4 percent. As with the more recent figures, there is indeed a significant difference,
The USA and Japan have highest cancer survival rates

Q&A: Who thinks this is a good reason to be critical of conventional medicine?
Question by Alex F: Who thinks this is a good reason to be critical of conventional medicine?
I recently finished reading this;
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB120934207044648511.html?mod=2_1566_topbox
and I think a lot of specific parts in it (especially the second half) highlight why people are so sick with the modern medical system.
“M.D. Anderson viewed Mrs. Kelly as uninsured and told her she could get an appointment only if she brought a certified check for $ 45,000……Mr. Kelly arranged to borrow the money from his father’s trust, which was in probate proceedings…..But the hospital demanded an additional $ 60,000 on the spot. It told her the $ 45,000 had paid for the lab tests, and it needed the additional cash as a down payment for her actual treatment.”
The saddest thing in my eyes is that allopaths go after alternative medicine for price gouging (esp cancer) patients, despite the fact I continually see the alternative methods get significantly better results for 1/10th-1/100th of the cost of conventional treatments.
Anyhow, I’d like your opinions on this!
Best answer:
Answer by Lightning
Good question,
I do think a lot of the time Allopaths slag of Alternative medicine is because they want to protect their markets…
….Yet they complain they are so busy all the time?
I’d like to see all cancer treatments, including allopathic independantly tested on a level playing field (Not necessarily using the reductionist medical model) and the results published.
I’m sure allopathy has a lot to offer but i also think someone else should be allowed to have a go where the results are less favourable.
You never know they may actually be able to do something better which Allopaths could use in their practice.

Answer by ranishwaura
First of all, congratulations on your compliance to the entire treatment.
Fibrosis is the sequel of pulmonary TB and does not indicate active TB. (It actually indicates a healed patch.)
You should try to get a fitness certificate from a physician (preferably one who specializes in chest medicine or treating TB) in a country where you are located stating that you no longer have any active form of PTB and are completely cured of the past infection & are physically fit to do the job you do.
To answer your question, there is no maintenance therapy for TB. Just maintain good diet and take proper precautions (whenever possible) in avoiding direct contact with a known contagious case.
