I recieved a double lung transplant on December 2, 1997 at the age of 42. I had alpha-1-antitrypsin disease but that doesn’t really matter in this context. Lung transplants have not been being done very long so there is no real data on possible longevity after the operation. A very good friend of mine recently passed away 11 years after a double lung transplant, in his casr liver failure killed him. When major organ transplantation first became a real medical option with the advent of advanced surgical techniques and effective immunosupressant medications a recipient that lived five years post transplant was considered a success. My Doctor tells me there is no reason I cna’t live another 20 to 25 years or more. Hang in there and take care of yourself, look at it this way, every added day you live from here on out is a bonus.

I need to obtain a skill desperately. I am going to take a 3 week CNA class as soon as I am able to. I want to take a 10 month full time M-F LPN course. Its mandatory for your success to not miss any days. My mom is not yet sure.. if she will get chemo. That is her only option..other then waiting and monitoring the progress of cancer with tests. IF.. she decides to get Chemo. I will be driving her 1-2 times a week every 3 weeks for about 3-4 months. She was told she can take a few months off but.. that is it.. than she has to repeat the cycle. This cycle does not enable me to go to the LPN program for only 10 months. I need the LPN in order to succeed at paying my way in life when something happens to her. I am not sure how I can do this. We have no family or friends here to help me.. to take over while I did this. I am So.. scared that giving this opportunity up.. would set me up for disaster and eviction later on. A CNA.. won’t pay my way ultimately. It will in the meantime IF I choose to use it. Please Help.

I’m very sorry to hear about your situation. My family is also dealing with a similar situation. My fiance’s mother has late-stage small cell lung cancer and has had to leave her business for over two months. Here are some suggestions, but also I send you my good wishes and prayers:
The first thing I would look into is what your mother’s insurance covers, if she has insurance (I’m assuming so, since you’re talking about possible chemo). My mother-in-law’s insurance covered treatment in one of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America. There’s several around the country. CTCA is super easy to contact, and they will fight your insurance company FOR you to get coverage. You just hand them the info. and they take care of it. Check it out here: http://www.cancercenter.com/ My fiance went with his mom and said that they are truly an amazing place.
The best part is, patients get to STAY in the center for as long as they’re being treated, AND they pay for the patient’s flight to the center. You wouldn’t have to worry about driving her. It’s really a good idea, because the centers are so awesome and have totally organic food, 24 hour care and ONLY cancer specialists working there. They focus on healing patients not just with drugs and machines, but spiritually and mentally. My mother-in-law chose to have acupuncture, daily prayers, physical therapy, a visit from a family member who flew in, and a counselor while she was there– all covered by the insurance because CTCA fought for her.
Okay, sorry, I didn’t mean to advertise for them, they have just really helped us through alot of stress. If your mother stayed there, you would have more time to get your schooling done. However, I would say that at this moment, the important thing is going to be your mother’s health, even if putting your career on hold hurts. Financially, there are other alternatives than the CNA/LPN route. I know it’s hard to get a job that pays the rent these days, but putting all your effort into getting that job rather than schooling would help more right now. Even getting those certifications, provided you were able to pay for and pass the courses, doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a job in that field. Stick with the more sure bet (a regular job) until your financial situation improves or your mom’s health becomes less of a problem.
You can contact your state government’s job center for resume help and job searching, an employment/temp. agency like Manpower, or search for jobs online at www.craigslist.com, where there’s tons of job listings, temporary gigs and where you can even post your resume or offer your services.
If and when you’re really facing eviction, you can apply to be a live-in nanny, an on-site apartment maintenance person/caretaker, or a house-sitter. Some banks and mortgage companies are allowing or even paying people with good references to stay in empty, foreclosed homes to do basic maintenance and prevent vandalism.
I also suggest contacting the American Cancer Society. They’re a research and charity organization that offers a great deal of support to cancer patients and their families.

Call your doctor. He’ll ask you questions like “How long does it last? What finally relieves it? Do you have a history of asthma? How old are you? What do you mean by compressed? like a belt is tightening around your chest or that someone is sitting on it?” If it’s the latter(someone sitting on you) call the doctor sooner rather than later.

My mother 75 lives with me. She drives, and cooks. Walks un assisted. She has lung cancer for 1.5 years now. Her now retired Oncologist deemed her stable before retiring because her lung tumors reversed themselves and two dissapeared . She had three. He opted to just keep watch on them every six months. Hers seemed he said much slower growing. She was/is due to go back to see the new Oncologist whom already has displayed signs of greed over patient/family to me. I will get to that in a minute. But.. she had Vertigo several weeks ago.. and the Cat Scan shown an old stroke that she never had signs having. She takes an aspirin regimen they said that could be why.
Well.. the doctor sent her for an MRI to see what caused the stroke. It turns out the cancer went to her brain.. much unlike the Oncologist even suggested and never checked before retiring. She now has two tumors or Mets as they like to call them. From what I have been reading on cancer sites this can be an ongoing battle to keep them at bay.. they come back. I read it all. She is now.. going to need my help and care more then ever. They probably will want her to even start chemo once these are under control.
Well the prognosis varies from 10 months three years.. and some five. Of course the stats are always lower then from those you talk to.
I am my mothers only daughter. I live in a state for five years that I love.. however.. I am about to lose my unemployment state benefit extension at the absolute worse time for me.. this month and all this news right before Christmas. I have not seriously been able to financially celebrate Christmas in over seven years. I have nothing. I can’t find work .. and have been looking. I have to now.. get a job around my mothers schedule of treatments and maybe even surgery.
My brother is a drinker and he lives out of state. He won’t come to help. My other brother does not care about my mother or I at all.. but talks to the other brother. He knows.. and does not care.
I have no friends here.. or neighbors or anyone to help or talk to me about this all. I feel like I may one day end up on the street seriously unable to afford to live all because of my good nature in beleiving to help my mother. Which is wonderful.. but later I am left to pick up the pieces in an economy that makes it next to impossible to find work. I was thinking of returning to school before this and now.. with this all I can’t.
Geeesh.. If that is not bad enough my old friend from out of state where I use to live called me after I phoned her crying about the news.. and she is asking me the most insensitive and unrealted questions about what kinds of jobs I did before.. and how many I have had since living here.. Nothing about anything that matters. I am scared and never ever felt so alone. If I had kids or a husband or a boyfriend.. I would not be perhaps so.. scared. But.. I don’t have the security of any other family, friends even.. No one seems to care or want to help me.
Its a cruel cruel world we live in today. I just don’t have much more hope and I am losing my momentum and I feel like I am on a sinking ship here and may go down with it.. me and my two dogs are all I have. I can’t afford the two bedroom here. My mom has been paying the rent in exchange for my help and me the bills which will be stopping the end of this month unless a job opportunity comes threw soon.
Where I live the snow is expected by the middle to end of the month and does not stop. Its on going. I didn’t think it was a good idea to re new my lest in Feb. But.. what choice do I have? I don’t know if its wise to find a place to live now.yet.. with all the snow and sub zero temps coming our way soon. But.. a move is going to have to be done.. Or else she will have no choice but to declare bankruptcy on all her medical bills. Its either or. But.. I can’t do all this alone and the winter is not the time for this. I put up prior to the news our rickety old small tree. That helps but no gifts once again.
I don’t know how many more sad Christmas’s and years are ahead. It seems like a domino effect.

I left word with the new Oncologist that my mother and I have not yet met. My mothers doctor spoke to him so he knew what the MRI said . Never called me back. As if time is money and that weighs more then patient care and compassion? He should not be working in the field if money comes before patient care. My dads Oncologist had called me from Texas when I lived in NJ and spoke to me like I was his little sister. That is how nice and concerned he was. I did manage to get a three day earlier appointment. I am just afraid this new Oncologist may be hard to work or relate to.
Its a sad mess. I have no medical benefits for me and at this rate have no idea if or when I will be able to . I don’t remember a time I actually genuinely had a good time and was happy. Its been that long. I smile on my face and sadness is always in my heart. If not sadness.. worry about how I will one day manage financially… Or.. if I will need signs and a can to pan handle, the way the econo

I am really sorry for you. I can only suggest crazy things, like moving to the south (it’s still sunny here) and getting a job at McDonald’s. I hope things get better for you. You need a new doctor, I’ve never heard of tumors reversing themselves…that is just terrible. Merry X-mas?
Oh and perhaps you can get in touch with a free cancer hospital? These people clearly just want money and don’t properly examine patients.

Every couple of minutes (for the past couple of days) I get pains in the middle of my left rib cage and it kind of throbs for a bit then goes away. It kind of feels like someone’s pressing a bruise there kind of. It doesn’t hurt when I breathe or anything and there’s not a bruise on the rib cage itself because I’ve tried looking.
It is worth noting I have asthma.
Anyone have any idea of what it could be? Thanks.

The health of the 21 century business executive is under attack. Numerous NIH (National Institute of Health) funded studies have reiterated the adverse effects from living the stressful, unhealthy executives lifestyle.
The Journal of Hypertension conducted a landmark study between the years 1964 and 2000. 3267 initially young, healthy male, business executives participated in a health screening with measurements of cardiovascular disease risk factors. At baseline exam. none of the executives had hypertension(high blood pressure), cardiac risk factors such as obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, or were on blood pressure medicines. All test subjects were examined annually over a 32 year time frame.
After a 32 year follow up there where a total of 701 deaths. 234 (33.4%) died as a result of coronary heart disease, 49 died from strokes,42 (6%) died as a result of secondary coronary related disease and 204 (29.1%) to cancer.
To date, numerous federally funded studies are underway, analyzing the ongoing, progressive effects of the sedentary, stressful lifestyle, that the American business executive lives. Although biotechnology has taken huge strides to create, cutting edge diagnostic tools to diagnose and treat many diseases, as well as “the magic pill to alter blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol and blood sugars, the business executive continues to become more sedentary,and has greater disregard for diet and exercise. Moreover the modern day American business executive is more likely to take Prozac, Zoloft or Paxil, to help handle the amount of stress, and anguish that corporate American throws their way. What they don’t know, is medical literature generally agrees that Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox and Prozac appear to cause the tremendous weight gain. The rule of thumb: The high the dose of psychotropic drug, the more likely weight gain will be an issue. So resorting to the state of the art in medical therapeutics is not the answer. It is in my opinion, the cowardly, lazy man’s way out of a no win situation.
I can save with conviction, that most blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose lowering agents, and heart medications do ONE thing: SLOW YOU DOWN! And when you slow down, your health go’s direct linear.
For example, beta blockers are prescribed to treat both blood pressure and associated cardiopathies. They are designed to slow down heart rate and stroke volume, relax arteries, suppress electrical activity of the heart, or offset calcium influx in heart muscle. The end result of all these actions is a drop in blood pressure and heart rate. This causes a significant drop your body’s metabolism, energy levels, mood and sexual libido, like a bad day on Wall street. Glucose lowering agents work by readjusting your blood sugars and secondarily promote fat retention. Cholesterol medications, primarily the “statins” have been indicated in muscle weakness and breakdown, also another culprit in making your metabolism drop. Remember when FDA announced in 2001 that Bayer Pharmaceutical Division must withdraw Baycol (cerivastatin) from the U.S. market because of reports of sometimes fatal rhabdomyolysis, a severe muscle adverse reaction from this cholesterol-lowering (lipid-lowering) product. The FDA agreed with and supported this decision.
As both a Physican Assistant and Personal Fitness Trainer my niche is the San Diego fitness community is working with unhealthy corporate executives. I currently manage the lifestyles of 25 executives living in San Diego California. The typical executive whom I work with, is 48 years old, 40 pounds over weight, has irritable bowel syndrome, chronic headaches due to uncontrolled high blood pressure, maybe fatty liver disease from too much alcohol, is severely depressed, and last but not least, they constantly reiterate how much they dislike their current working lifestyle.
The good news is that diet, exercise and stress management can control, and reverse many of these maladies, if you make the time. For Example:
1. High Blood Pressure – Getting the heart rate sufficiently elevated through a cardiovascular event, will cause vasodilation, thus altering total peripheral resistance within blood vessels. This has a lowering effect on high blood pressure. To date, I have successfully reversed the effects of high blood pressure on 31 clients, thus saving them from having a stroke or heart attack.
2. High Cholesterol – A properly designed medical exercise program, emphasizing cardiovascular and muscular endurance conditioning, can induce a lipolytic reaction, and increase good cholesterol HDL to absorb the bad cholesterol, which narrows arteries. To date I have seen dramatic changes in 19 clients who are no longer taking lipid lowering agents.
3. Type II Diabetes – Very simple, drop the fat with diet and consistent exercise, the blood sugars return to normal levels. Body fat impedes glucose uptake from muscle tissue. Could you wipe water off your kitchen counter if your sponge was lathered with Crisco oil? Your muscle tissue works the same way!
4. Depression – Exercise can make you high. Your body produces “Enkephalins” which are are neurotransmitters found in the brain and spinal cord. They play a part in pain perception, movement, mood, behavior, and neuroendocrine regulation. For many of my business executive clients they rely on exercise to moderate their mood and overall mental health.
In summary, a healthy mindset is always the best way. I always recommend my clients to time manage their health and fitness. This is what administrative assistants, Daytimers and Blackberry cell phones are all about. Health and fitness must be scheduled into a hectic daily schedule. If it is not, then business meetings, luncheons, and office emergencies with always dominate your schedule. Health and fitness must be a priority, or you will never live to reap the fruits of your labor. If you require a purpose to schedule and health and fitness program, and be more accountable, then use a personal fitness trainer with a solid background in medicine. Your fitness trainer must have a thorough understanding of internal medicine and pharmacology. After all, you are putting your life in his hands. Pancreatic cancer spreads very fast and it is difficult to spot it, therefore, it is a major cause of death among cancer illnesses. It is a cancer that spreads very rapidly to other parts and organs of the body, making surgical intervention useless in protecting the patient from death.
How does cancer develop in your pancreas? Most tumors form in the cells that produce digestive enzymes. These tumors that are called adenocarcinomas account for nearly 95% of cancer pancreatic.
Endocrine tumors that form in the islet cells are less common. Upon existence, they produce too much hormone. Very serious are the ampullary cancers that form in the ampulla of Vater, it is where your bile and pancreatic ducts are emptied into your small intestine. These tumors when blocking the bile duct, lead to jaundice.
The developing of pancreatic cancer happens when the DNA is damaged, and the growth and division of healthy cells becomes uncontrolled. Thus, a tumor is formed which is a formation of malignant cells.
A small number of people develop this cancer due to genetic predisposition. In 90% of the cases environmental factors, lifestyle, smoking, diet, and chemical exposure lead to the formation of cancer.
According to surveys, black men and women are at higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer, being overweight and working with petroleum compounds also play a risk factor.
How do you suspect that you may have developed cancer in your pancreas? First of all, you lose your appetite, develop sharp abdominal pain, suddenly lose weight, and have jaundice, yellowing of the skin. It is important to mention Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that infect your mucus and your stomach. In many cases it is asymptomatic.
Courvoisier’s law predicts that jaundice and a painless gallbladder that is distended are together indicative of pancreatic cancer. This cancer can be spotted while carrying out liver function tests, along with ultrasound and abdominal CT examinations. Endoscopic ultrasound is a painful, but effective way of spotting the tumor.
Patients having cancer in their pancreas have a poor prognosis due to the cancer not causing evident symptoms in the early stage. Mortality is around 99% in the United States, ranking cancer pancreatic as the number one fatal cancer in America.
This cancer may result in diabetes which turns out to be a life-long illness exposing the patient at discomfort and high risk of death if not treated properly. The American Cancer Society promotes high consumption of vegetables and fruits and lower consumption of red meat. Like with all other cancers, smoking proves a major factor in developing this cancer as well.
Prevention of cancer is vital. Long-term examinations have proved that taking vitamin D helps in decreasing the risk of cancer with 50%. Lately, younger generations have been affected, however, these patients have responded well to treatment in the UK, for example. Researchers don’t know whether trade center dust put large numbers of people at risk for severe lung conditions like pulmonary fibrosis, either. There have been some studies suggesting a small excess in cases of the immune system problem sarcoidosis among firefighters, but the number of cases has run in the dozens. People who were at ground zero have complained of kidney problems, liver problems, chronic headaches, stroke, various types of chemical poisoning, strange rashes — none of which have been connected to the dust.
Doctors can’t agree on many cases.
In the most famous case, a medical examiner in New Jersey blamed the 2006 death of disabled New York City police detective James Zadroga on tiny World Trade Center particles embedded in his lungs, only to have that finding challenged by New York City’s medical examiner, who concluded that the particles were caused by prescription drug abuse.
Sorting fact from fear is only going to get tougher over the next decade.
The median age for a first responder at ground zero on 9/11 was 38, meaning a majority of these men and women are now nearing 50, an age when all manner of health problems begin to emerge.
Some things about the illnesses people are getting have puzzled scientists. Many of the people now experiencing sinus problems and asthma-like symptoms said they felt absolutely fine for years after their exposure to the dust. They weren’t coughing. They could run up a flight of stairs without getting winded. Then, sometimes quite suddenly, their condition came out of nowhere.
Crane said the Mt. Sinai clinic is still getting about 100 new patients every month, and he doesn’t think they are fakers, or people overreacting to intense media coverage of the issue. They are almost all people, he said, who are initially reluctant to consider the idea that their persistent illnesses might be linked to time they spent at the World Trade Center.
Caught in the middle of the search for scientific truth are people like Stephen Petrovich, a 60-year-old Ukrainian Orthodox Church priest from Huron, Ohio, who says he drove to New York after the terror attacks and spent a little over two weeks at ground zero volunteering as a chaplain.Today, he is in a hospice, wheezing and short of breath from a lung condition that he believes was caused by breathing smoke at the site.
“There is nothing they can do. I was told I’ve got 18 months. It could be 18 months. It could be less. It could be two years. It just depends on how fast this goes through me,” he said. “I just hope to God that I die in my sleep.”
There are others who endure a different kind of suffering — nightmares, depression and anxiety. Post-traumatic stress disorder, along with common respiratory ailments, is what scientists can most strongly link to their experience at the trade center site. New York City’s health commissioner, Thomas Farley, said researchers estimate that as many as 19 percent of the people enrolled in the city’s trade center health registry have PTSD.
He said those psychological problems, in the end, could be just as serious a public health problem as physical issues caused by the dust.
The sick include more than 10,000 construction workers, police officers, firefighters and others who spent time clearing ground zero of debris who sued the city and contractors over their illnesses; a legal settlement worth well over 0 million was reached this year.

3. Where your hopes and dreams are shattered just in time for the next pit of hell: highschool.
High School: High school is a failed experiment in preparing young people for the adult world. All high schools in the country were built around 1960 and were designed to hold about half as many students as they currently do. Nothing seems to work quite right in a high school building. The heaters only work during the summer and the air conditioning only works in the winter. The asbestos insulation has all fagged out and the building becomes an oven or a meat locker, depending on the time of year. The plumbing is usually a disaster in high school, with drinking fountains never working but toilets that never stop running.
High schools are usually poorly run by a team of out of touch assholes, also known as Principals, counselor, teachers, and ex-Marine drill sergeants (gym teachers). These people seem hell bent on destroying all hope for students through tedious testing, poorly planned projects, educational videos made during the Truman Administration, and text books that mention the Soviet Union on every page.
High school is also the place where the stress of growing up and the stress of fitting in join forces to destroy even the strongest among us. Most of High school is not spent learning but involves trying to find friends who aren’t complete douche bags, trying hook up with people of the opposite sex unsuccessfully, combing your hair, buying cloths in the effort that someone will notice you, working out so you will not get your ass kicked everyday, trying desperately to get rid of the zits that have taken over your face, driving a car that a homeless person wouldn’t piss in or riding on an over crowed bus while choking on diesel fumes, while people you don’t know make fun of you worse then your friends do, and on top of all of that, you must act like nothing is wrong in your life.

No, just because the rate of the cancer gene going up means there would be more cases of cancer doesn’t mean the rate of cancer cases going up is related to the gene.
I statement offered no reason to believe the gene is becoming more common then a guess at why there are more cancer cases.
There are other things that could cause the cancer rate to go up like the lifestyle of today’s middle age, the higher pollution, ect.
There is to much not being considered for the statement to be accurate.
