My mom has had pain upon sitting and standing for months now. She also has very bad pain during intercourse (tmi I know). She had an X-ray done in May and they didn’t see anything wrong. Well she was in the hospital a couple weeks ago due to an infection and they ran every test imaginable on her except for the MRI. Everything came out fine except for a few spots on her lungs and one on her tailbone that came out in the bone scan. She went to her Lung Specialist yesterday and they said her lungs were fine and it was just Asthma. Then he said that she needed an MRI done on that tailbone spot and that he was referring her to an Oncologist. Why is he referring her to an Oncologist if she hasn’t even had the test done yet? Does that mean she has cancer? I mean tailbone cancer is extremely rare so I’m hoping it’s just something like Coccydynia. Is this just the normal process of elimination on trying to find out what it is? She did get a copy of her doctors report and he listed a possible cause of Multiple Sclerosis? What does MS have to do with a spot on the tailbone? And why would she need to see an Oncologist instead of a Neurologist if he thinks she has MS? Thanks.

She would only be referred to an oncologist is somebody suspected that she had cancer. While primary cancers of the tailbone would be rare, many different cancers metastasize to the bones. Are you sure it was an oncologist?

My wife tells me her doctor says that surgery is not feasible in her situation but I have trouble understanding why there is no quick-fix like just removing the spots in her lungs instead of going for weekly Herceptin treatments. She says the Herceptin is just keeping the cancer from growing any further but it isn’t actually shrinking anything. Shouldn’t she be getting more aggressive treatment to get rid of the cancer? She says that it’s a matter of balancing QOL with treatments and seems fine with the idea of living with cancer. She seems well now and lots of people have trouble believing that she really has cancer. I felt the same way for a long time but am coming to realize that she’s trying pretty hard to stay positive. I guess I’m really trying to figure out what I can do to make it all go away but know that I have to figure out how to deal with it instead.

It is a terrible time for you, because you feel so helpless. I am also going through herceptin treatment, but my cancer is clear.
Just listen to what her doctors say and keep positive for her sake – she has got the right attitude. Enjoy every single hour with her – and I wish you both all the luck in the world.

I need help dealing with multiple medical conditions?

When I was a kid (age 7) I had a throat cancer … the treatments (chemo, radiation, and surgery) got rid of it … BUT it seems now I am left dealing with a wack of side effects, that ruin my everyday life!
I now have to deal with the follwing ..
(1) An underactive thyroid (which I take a pill daily for)
(2) Lots of digestive problems – acid reflux, heart burn pains, lost taste buds (I have a few meds to help control SOME of these symptoms – pantoloc, pepto, pepcid AC)
(3) I aspirate with everything (the liquids drip into my lungs) – I have 2 inhalers to help clean out the phlegm and whatever else goes in there
(4) Trouble eating, since my lower jaw stopped growing when I had my treatments, and my throat has even tightened on me to the point that I’ve had to have it surgically stretched back open
(5) Weight problems – I have NEVER been more then 100lbs (I’m only 5’1 but I am told I should be between 110-120lbs)
(6) I lost two-thirds of my hearing
(7) Anxiety and panic attacks – I take ativan for this, but it makes me tired all the time – I’ve tried 3 different antidepressants, had bad reactions to ALL of them
(8) Lack of energy, I tire out very fast, my muscles feel sore for days after I try to exercise or work out
(9) Headaches every day – caused by any of the above conditions
I feel burnt out and sore and depressed – I can’t seem to manage ALL these things at the same time – SOMETHING always feels likes its wrong in my body – I always feel sick
I;ve been to doctors for ALL of these problems, and they perscribe meds to help “maintain” the pains of these conditions … I have 6 medications I take daily (for thyroid, stomach, headaches n anxiety), and another 7 meds for “as needed” times … I;m tired of this “living off medications” feeling
I want to remember what it was like to wake up in the morning HAPPY and actually look forward to what the day has to offer me … but it seems all my medical conditions hold me back from being able to enjoy life!
I have changed my diet to healthier, non fattening foods – which have curbed my heartburn for the most part … but I am not getting enough food and exercise in a day to truely feel healthy
Any input or ideas on how I can manage and deal with all these medical conditions … so that I can enjoy my life a bit more and not feel sick everyday ???

Try an herbalist or homeopathic doctor… And make sure you tell them ALL of your symptoms and ALL of the medications you are taking to avoid interactions between treatments. Try low stress exercises that give you energy (yoga, for example) and helps you control panic attacks. Good luck, I hope you feel better.

Tanya – Generally, the cause of such multiple lung nodules is discovered following a thorough history and physical examination, but further testing including lung biopsy is sometimes required for diagnosis.
Multiple pulmonary nodules are more likely to be benign (such as granulomas, scars, lymph nodes) when they are less than 1 cm (just under half an inch) in diameter.
Multiple lung nodules from known cancer coming from other organs or body malignancy are more worrisome when they are greater than 1 cm in diameter or when they are detected by plain chest x-rays.
I have also seen multiple lung nodules from small clots from the deep leg veins that have broken loose and traveled into the lung, imitating a malignancy, but actrually benign. In some work, material breathe in has also produced multip[e lung nodules. Work with your lung specialist doctor to get a more accurate diagnosis.

It could be pulmonary actinomycosis a bacterial lung infection caused by actinomyces or propionibacteria or rheumatoid lung disease. Those are the only two things I could find on the internet. But I am sure there are a lot more.
You should demand a pet scan. This showed two additional areas on my grama’s lungs that the cat scan had missed two times. If it is cancer, the cells will absorb the glucose solution that they inject you with, and then you’ll know for sure. She was told two years ago that she had nodules as well. Good luck!

I’m 25/F Confirmed Diagnosis;I’m 5’6 350,I have; Arthritus (10mg 6x daily methadone),Sleep Apnea,High B.P. (Enalapril 10mg 2X daily),Restless Leg,Asthma,Lymphodema,Hyperhydrosis,Never ending pain in all joints, muscles,jaw. All of following worst on left side; Constant decreased sense of feeling/numbness every where worst from waist to under butt & inner thighs pelvic area,Stabbing/numbness in left back quadrant of head,Phsyically weak MUCH worse on left side.Had blood tests for cancer,liver,thyroid,adrenal,heart (adenesin test),cbc all good results,tests for blurry vision good as well however in dmv test where I had to answer as to which eye the blinking light was blinking in I had problems when it light blinked in left eye when the lights where nearing the middle towards my nose.) The chronic pain I’ve been told is mostly from my arthritus,however what is the relation of all the left side symptoms? Please offer you’r opponion so I can possibly help point my doc in right direction?

To the person that blamed me problems on “over eating”…That really hurt my feelings. You read my weight and assume that I am gorging on food when that is not the case. I have been monitoring my weight and been active in the last 2 years I have lost 100 (this year and the year before 75 with a total of 175lb). I think it is unfortunate that you made these asumptions, and to be quite honest really redicolus as I have never before been told this by any health professional (not even when i was at 525+ lb).

Over the past 3 of 4 years I’ve had bronchitis that almost turned into pneumonia. I get bronchitis about twice a year. Could it be from asthma or just having weak lungs from all the infections?

Each bout of bronchitis can leave scarring on your lungs. If your smoke the chance of getting bronchitis more often increases and that is what leaves the damage on your lungs If you don’t smoke the option is the same but to a lesser degree. If you have asthma and bronchitis the scarring of lung tissue increases which in turn leaves you more suspeptable to infections which if not caught early enough can lead to pneumonia.

Have had CT scans every 6 months since then including one PET scan. All have come back “no change”. My doctor continues to recommend scans every 6 months. When I ask him why he says, “we need to make sure there is no growth”. How much longer will I need to have these scans?

The areas he has been told he has cancer in are his lymph nodes, kidneys, lungs top and bottom lobe, adrenal glands, and showing up on aorta and spine. He has had 4 open heart surgeries in his lifetime already….. any information would be helpful in wanting to know what to expect. Right now he seems good, but I know that can change quickly. Anyone had any experience such as this?

What does the doctor say? Your grandfather’s doctor is better able to make a prognosis than someone on an anonymous internet forum.
I can only say that my aunt was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer last fall and died last week, but your grandfather, given his health history, may have a different trajectory.

I don’t want to start breaking up the asbestos tiles and would rather cover over the whole mess with concrete and then lay new vinyl over the top, or just leave the concrete. If I use concrete, how thick does it need to be to withstand heavy traffic and moisture? Is it advisable to leave a thin layer of concrete bare? Does anyone know about tinted epoxy finishes and whether or not they’re appropriate for floors?

i can understand your desire to cover up this mess, forget the fact that its asbestos, what you are asking will only end in a disaster
