Need help getting a direct answer on this, family is deperate for information on what to be prepared for.
What can be done to help comfort the patient in the final days, what should a family be prepared for when tending to the patient. How do you tell the time span of life when patient is in the final stages.

End stage Pulmonary Emphysema/ Chronic COPD is characterized differently from one facility to another. But some signs you will see are a barrel chest. Take a look at your their chest it will seem just like that shape or similar to a box. Their airways have little air sacs at the base of her lungs. At this point her luns have lost the elasticity and air has leaked out of the sacs into his/her chest wall unable to be exhaled. That is what is causing the barrel chest.
Their fingertips might seem large or bloated. Rounded off from the cuticle to the tip.
They will have low oxygen levels in her blood but thats whats helping them breathe and HE/SHE WILL, in end stage COPD/Emphysema and any stage of typical COPD, look like he/she has a blue tint to her skin.
**Theywill have high PCo2 levels in her blood because of the air trapping.

If youre ever with them in the hospital and he/she is awake, alert, responsive make sure your monitor how much Oxygen he/she is on. typically 2-4LPM on a Nasal Cannula is adequate but in advanced patients can be higher and provided via a VentiMask or even NonReBreather Mask. As long as his/herOxygen level in her blood(SPO2) doesnt go above 93% MAX!!! A simple handheld monitor can quickly and painlessly assess her SPO2. Keep a very close eye because unfortunately some Nurses arent aware of this and will raise it higher which can slow her breathing and will eventually stop.

So in science class, we have to do a project on smoking and the diseases it causes and deaths and stuff like that.
And so, I would like the following, perty please and tanks:

-fact of how many people die of a smoking caused disease (like four out of every five people or whatever)
-how many deaths a year in smoking related diseases/illnesses in general
-how many people have bronchitis/chronic bronchitis
-how many people have emphysema
-how many people have lung cancer

I know it may be a lot, but i’d really REALLY like to have all this info at my disposal for this project. Thanks oodles of poodles!

Is Cancer Doc out there? Need Help!?

Cancer Doc answered a question about lung nodules for me. Just got PET scan results back and there was no uptake of my larger (12 mm) nodule…but the report says that the fact of no metabolic update cannot rule out bronchoalveolar or carcinoid tumors. They also found 5 more subcentimeter nodules and I have hypermetabolic and enlarged mid cervical lymph nodes (12mm by 15 mm) – I haven’t had so much as a cold in 2 years! I am still very concerned, but the doc says to wait four months for another CAT to see if any of these grow. I am a widow with a ten year old son. I am all he has, his dad passed away three years ago. 47 yr old woman with 42 pack yrs of smoking (just quit). Any advice? I don’t see how I can wait 4 months when I FEEL LIKE I KNOW IT IS CANCER…which is hard for me to explain – I just know it. Thanks!

I’m not a doctor but I’d suggest getting a second, third, even fourth opinion. Like you mention, it’s not something you want to wait around for. I wish you the best, and many years of health and happiness.

I am in need of some serious advise. I am an adult woman in need of food. I have been collecting food stamps for awhile now..because I have been out of work for a long.. time. My name is only on my lease. My mom who has lung cancer lives with me. I am only on my food stamps. She buys her own food. I did recently get a part time job on some weekends and one week day night with a Catering company. I start in May. I am going to get a pretty good wage per hour. But.. will probably be able to still collect because of the lack of hours. I had to take whatever I could get at this point and because I care for my mother in the day and take her to her appointments for her cancer.

Today.. I get a knock on the back door. It was a woman from the Human Services department. She asked if my mother lives here. (Of course I said no) I don’t want to go to jail or prison.. but we need food. My mothers money will be going for chemo treatments which will be the price of a new fully loaded Hummer when all is said and done. This is life. As with the economy.

I need to know what you would do…Or what I can do.. on my behalf.. to save my butt here. I am trying to be a good daughter and have been doing all the right things here. I don’t want problems. I wish I never answered the door but I did. The woman for some strange reason did not ask who I was/my name. She said she heard or has down that she lives with her daughter. My mother goes sometimes.. to the hospital or clinic in town to see a doctor. That is the only place she told she lives with me. Who would think.. you can’t even or should withhold whom you live with these days. But.. you do.

My moms mail comes here. I thought about getting a PO Box .. but that will cost 60-90.00 a year. Should we do this?

Because of my moms condition.. I can’t be moving and we can’t afford to be without food. My mom worked in her life 25 years for a factory. But.. as I said chemo is threw the roof expensive. I spoke with people who spent 30 thousand and another 100,000.00 on it. That is the food money right there. We have to live. I am so.. upset. Please .. Help Us.

There is very little that isn’t known about people in the system. All sorts of information is linked to people’s social security numbers, and the woman who came to your door really was on the right track. When dealing with agencies that provide services to low income people, it is best to be honest, as the downside can have severe consequences. You may be better off all around if you reveal your situation to whatever agency or agencies are active in your case. You might receive more benefits once your situation can be examined in a new light. Also, don’t threaten people with deletion. It isn’t necessary or polite.

doctor says he is in adv. stage of lung cancer. He is 85 years old. 2 days ago, he had a severe bout of coughing/breathlessness and everyone around almost gave up hope. thankfully, he has recovered a bit but still breathing is very uneasy for him. He seems to be under strain and is very tired.

We are not able to decide whether to put him in ventilator as doctor is not saying clearly how much risk it is. some say that once patient is on ventilator, then if it is removed, it is very risky for the patient. Is it true???

Currently he looks so exhausted, we want to do the best thing for him to make it as painfree as possible. please share any info you have on this..will be very very grateful!

Maybe your uncle can’t get enough air due to the cancer. It may help him. If you want other help than what you can get here, see if there is a hospice doctor who can see him first. I know that morphine can help some patients breathe more easily. I don’t know about your uncle. Hospice doctors are the most skilled in pain control and end of life issues, in my experience.

I am sorry about your uncle. My mother died of lung cancer at age 60. My mother-in-law died of it at age 76. I hope that you can keep him comfortable. Hospice facilities keep people more comfortable, from what I have seen, but maybe you don’t have one where you are.

My house was built in 1974 and I live on Tierra St. Fremont, Ca. Anyone have any info on whether my house might have asbestos or not? I have popcorn ceiling in the house. I’m really scared I might be living under a blanket of asbestos. Anyone know anywhere else asbestos might be found around the household so I can avoid it?
wow that is scary, asbestos lines floors… So I’m hoping that everyday activities won’t release the fibers in the air?
Oh and we’ve been living in this house for 5 years and my mom got lung cancer. I head it takes 14 years for asbestos to do damage to your lungs. But I can’t help but think could it be related?

Okay due to some medical issues I have my choices of bc are quite limited. I currently have the nuva ring just got it, took it out yesterday for my one week and I feel like crap, I have severe diarrhea almost didn’t make it to the potty twice already. A splitting headache, I’m shaky and sweating (theres 4 inches of snow on the ground). So I believe I’m going through withdrawal and I feel it may just get worse when I put a new one in because in a week my body will have adjusted to it having been out.

No IUD, it caused a tumor to grow in my right breast due to the large amount of hormone it releases, almost had to have half my breast removed thankfully after a steroid treatment I only had to have a small area operated on, to avoid cancer.

Can not do the shot, 1 in 40 women will bleed for 3 months straight when they start this, I have a platelet disorder which could cause me to bleed to death so the doctors will not even chance me being the 1 out of 40.

My obgyn will not prescribe pills, pills carry the highest amount of hormones then any other bc, and from past experiances he won’t do it, which Im greatful for, being a female and having your breasts cut into is something that will hurt you for the rest of your life.

I know your all going to say comdoms but… My husbands a soldier hes deployed when he comes home I’d rather not make him have to wear one, it seems kinda unfair.

(for those of you who are going to comment on why I need bc while hes gone, its because it takes up to 3 months on something before it reaches it’s full ability in your body, he comes home for r&r in july, so I need something now)

I’m guessing a diaphram, do they even still make those? If you have any other idea please tell me what you know, I’m making my appointment monday, but I would like to have options to talk about with my doctor.

i think they still do make the diaphram. there are also female condoms. i am not too sure what else is out there however your gyn can offer you the best advice. i would also check the web..

my grandma has stage 4 lung cancer it spread to the brain and luckily got all of the cancer out of her head we just found out they can remove all the cancer from her lung to =) she going for chemo and radiation also..

all this is good right and now her surviaval rate is much higher right?

*im also aware lung cancer comes back very quickly

but we went to the best doctors and hostpitals =)

Things sound like everything is doing ok. I have had friends and they had very similar situations and they did fine. Keep the faith and pray and take good care of each other smile and be positive and happy it does help alot.

I DO KNOW THAT THIS JAIL HAS BEEN SUED. THIS PLACE IS SUPPOSED TO BE SHUT DOWN. THEY THROW YOU IN ASBESTOS-FILLED CELLS WITH ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. THIS PLACE IS OVER POPULATED, AND THEY HAVE EVEN FED US PIGEON! I HAVE A FORM THAT NEEDS TO BE FILLED, AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THIS MYSELF. Need help picking out what classes I need to take….?

So, I’m going to start my own business but I know I need to further my education before I start. I’d like to take some business management classes or something of that sort, but I don’t know exactly what to take or do.

It’s an asbestos removal company. I have the clientele down, I just don’t know where or how to start.

So any advice is good advice.

You might start with the EPA certification course and OSHA has some courses. Health and safety courses would help.Marketing would be another needed course. You need to go to your college or university and obtain a course handbook or if on line see what degree requirements are needed for your field of interest. An Associate of Science degree in your interest area. Plus ASHI membership can be helpful. Check the city and county requirements and you might have to be bonded. See if there any federal grants to pay for needed equipment and/or training besides the PELL grant.

Need advice, friend is loosing grip on reality?

This guy is extremely intelligent, loves life, and doesn’t intend to waste his life. He’s got the ACT scores to go to a good college, and plans to go for a Ph.D. Basically, you might not guess that he’s getting out of touch with the real world.

The thing is, he’s going through a hell of a time right now. His uncle was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, and isn’t having a smooth recovery. His grades in school are slipping, he’s got a pile of homework, and he’s got a huge exam coming up that he must do well on if he wants to get into the college he’s looking at. I could go on and on, but the point is, he’s stressed the hell out.

He’s starting to crack. He tries to hide it, but I’m his best (and one of his only) friends and I can tell something is pretty f*cked up. He paces endlessly and mumbles to himself in his room almost 24/7. I’ve walked in and caught him sitting, naked, and laughing at a blank computer screen while mumbling incoherently. He’s afraid to listen to music because he can feel it “boiling” his brain, can’t even breathe near anything besides air without worrying about something similar and can’t remember what happened in the last 2 months or so. Once, he ran outside in 25 degree weather (it was still February), shirtless, because he thought someone was torturing his cat and he could “hear it”. The cat was actually quietly sleeping in his mom’s closet.

I finally talked to his mom about it, after coming into his room and finding him laying on his bed, laughing and crying at the same time, and asking the cat whether or not he should commit suicide. He didn’t even notice me for a couple minutes, then tried (and failed) to act like he was fine.

This isn’t normal for him at all. He’s smart and very level-headed most of the time. He can be weird, but he never seemed freakin’ schizophrenic before. I see him almost every other day, too, so I would know.

What do I do for him? I think it’s obvious that the stress was what triggered his breakdown. Anyone would start to crack after enough crap piled up in their lives. The question is, how serious is the problem, and do we call a psych to help him or wait until he pulls himself together? His mom says he refuses to see a psych and believes he is fine.

BTW, I don’t think he’s just doing this for attention. It would take a determined drama queen to stay up for 3 days straight, doing nothing but talking to himself and babbling that his brain is boiling because of the music he hears, not to mention his paranoia about the neighbors “trying to poison” him.

He’s never been on drugs. With his current paranoia, I don’t think he’d try it even if he had the means. If he thinks smelling something funny will melt his brain, I can only imagine what he thinks about real, mind altering substances .

Is it possible that he is on drugs? If not it sounds like he may have a mental disorder that should be taken seriously, especially since he has mentioned suicide. There is a chance it could be a nervous breakdown from all the stress he has been under, but what ever it is he needs professional help. I think starting him off with a regular MD may be better and then the doc will refer your friend as to where he should go from there. Your friend will hopefully be more willing to see the MD than a psych doctor in the beginning. Best wishes.
