a person with emphysema often needs to be given supplemental oxygen. Why is it important for this person not to get too much oxygen? one thought/hint is chemoreceptors
Best answer:
Answer by riding in style
because a person whom suffers from emphysema already is used to lower oxygen levels in the brain…so the breathing mechanism in the brain is geared for this..so when you increase oxygen you in fact are actually suffocating them..people whom need oxygen more then the average prescribed 2 liters per minute are given more only thru the medical guidance of a pulmonoligist.

Quebec needs an asbestos registry: environmentalist (CTV)
ctvmontreal.ca MONTREAL — Asbestos is continuing to make Quebecers sick, says a Montreal environmentalist. Daniel Green has compiled a list of more than 280 buildings in Quebec that contained asbestos, a carcinogen that has been linked to illnesses including lung cancer. Green’s list was compiled over six months by tracking the public tender process; each time a building is renovated, by law the contractor must be made aware if asbestos is present. “(It’s in) our schools and hospitals, in our CEGEPs and universities,” he said, adding that he believes there are hundreds of buildings containing asbestos that the government is not divulging. Green believes the province should create an asbestos registry with information about current and past asbestos levels. “(It should reveal) if there has been asbestos in their buildings, if this asbestos is still there, if it has been removed, when it was removed and was it removed safely,” he said. “The people have the right to know that they may be exposing themselves to a carcinogen. It’s about the right to know,” he said. Some buildings, like some schools the English Montreal School Board, have had asbestos issues, and officials have chosen to make that information public. “We removed or contained asbestos in our buildings about a decade ago,” said EMSB spokesperson Mike Cohen. “We were very public about it… We have created an inventory of asbestos of every one of our buildings, so we know which building, which rooms, how many …

Wall texture needs to be removed?
Question by mutantninjalobsterbearkisses: Wall texture needs to be removed?
I’m going to fix my dad’s house while he’s deployed for the army. This is a DREAM i’ve been living there since i was five and it needs a TOTAL makeover. There’s this fugly wall texture everywhere. Idk who’s adventure it was… but this house is from the 50′s. I wanna get rid of it SOOOOOO BAD! but it’s EVERYWHERE! It’s in every room of the whole house, every wall, and every ceiling. The texture is like spiky-bumpy ripples and rinkles. It’s not like popcorn i looked that up and popcorn seems alittle too rounded. it’s got layers and layers of paint on top of it. but in a crack in one of the walls you can see actual 50′s wall paper peeking out. so it’s in the middle somewhere. I was trying to search on how to remove it but i started getting stuff about asbestos. If it’s a dangerous situation then I’m willing to take precautionary measures. but.. I wanna do this in the cheapest way possible as well. I was waching a home improvement show a few months ago and this guy was actually scraping it off! My dad himself suggested i just sand it down but he might not be aware of the asbestos thing. anybody got any idea’s on what i should do?
Best answer:
Answer by Kare_bear_
Any time you have a possible asbestos problem that’s dangerous! If you do choose to tackle this yourself, remember:
-Keep it wet
-Keep it contained
-Keep the area secure
Which means which ever area you tackle first: tape a plastic barrier up on all the heating vents, windows & doorways. To keep the Possible asbestos from traveling through the house in to other rooms.
Keep it wet means: spraying the area that you are removing or sanding to keep the dust particles out of the air. Once they get into the air that’s when the fibers can be inhaled in to the lungs.
Keep the area secure means: don’t let anyone into the room that doesn’t have the right stuff on. 2 layers of clothes (so one can be left in the room & bagged up, not to let the fibers out of the room). Keep on dust masks & tie & secure hair.
Asbestos is nothing to joke about: There are tests that can be run if you want to save yourself all the trouble & peace of mind.
Good Luck & I Hope Dad Likes It!

The Pan Mass Challenge is a 180 mile bike ride across Massachusetts that supports cancer research for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Riders need to raise $ 3400.00 to participate. We have sent letters out to friends and family but need to do more to raise the money. We’d appreciate any ideas for fundraisers!

You could ask local business to donate items and raffle them off.
Ask local business where you frequent for lunch or coffee and ask if you can leave a can for donations. UNO Pizzeria also allows you to have a party night. You set up a night and ask friends, family, coworkers, etc. to eat at UNOs that day and UNOs will give you a percentage back. Other places may do that as well.

Question by : Looking for cancer stats and my post needs clarification .?
My post needs clarification has members reading it do not know what I’m asking .I posted like 7 questions but not getting the asnswer I want I think do to a language problem with english.
My question was most deadly cancer and no progress in lung cancer, pancreatic cancer , stomach cancer ,prostate cancer and cholangiocarcinoma cancer.
But the question should be I’m not knowable to make the claim if very little to no progress can some one here more knowable explain and I’m looking for a 10 year stats chart to see if very little to no progress .
I got one chart.
All sites 66%
Breast 89%
Colon 65%
Leukemia 50%
Lung cancers 16%
Melanoma 92%
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma64%
Ovary45%
Pancreas 5%
Prostate 99%
Rectum 66%
Urinary bladder 81%
stomach ?
cholangiocarcinoma ?
But looking for a stats of 10 year like from 1999 to 2009 to see if my claim if very little to no progress true or false.
Also I made a claim (((( There are 300 types of cancer and the vast majority have a 50% five year survival rate and the non majority are from one spectrum to 80% higher to other spectrum of only 10% or 5%. ))) Is some one more knowable to explain if this claim is true or false.
I should also put a disclaimer do to I’m not knowable with cancer topic it may be offensive to doctors or cancer researchers as a person not knowable like my self on this topic it seems there is little to no progress , but that may be do to the media does not talk about healthcare breakthroughs or what is going on in the lab and research as this is not cool has it is more cool to talk about ipad or police shooting /bank robbery in the news than healthcare .

The patient would need to be educated on paliative care, hospice etc and alternatives available such as returning home to die.
Thery would also need to be educated on the services available within the hospital, both for themselves and visitors/family.

HELP! My grandma needs a lung! HELP!?
Question by : HELP! My grandma needs a lung! HELP!?
My grandma was diagnosed with a severe case of lung cancer about 2 or 3 years ago several years after her husband he had died of pancreatic cancer. Luckily, they caught it at an early stage and removed the small tumor from the top of her lung. On top of the cancer she has been suffering from emphysema for many years from smoking earlier in her life. She walks around with an air tank at ALL times, she CANNOT go with out. On rare occasions when she does shes either sitting or in a wheel chair, but again those are rare occasions. She can walk about 20 to 30 ft and then she can’t breath and becomes anxiety ridden and has to stop for about 10min to catch her breath and calm down. With the cancer came Keomo therapy, as expected but it tore apart her muscles making her even more weak than she already was. My whole existence I can remember her always having breathing problems but NEVER this bad. At this point there is nothing me or my family can do (which to mention we have family problems that contribute to her anxiety and lack of help from other family members) and it pains me to watch her suffer. She’s only 66 but according to her doctor she’s too old to have an immediate lung transplant and needs to be cancer free for 5 years before even being considered on a list. She has the money to go to do whatever shes needs to get this lung, but she has become so hopelss and stressed, she just doesn’t have the fight in her. I am desperate and willing to do absolutely ANYTHING to help her, she is an amazing women that has lived an amazing life and deserves more than what she’s getting right now. She wants to travel and to garden, she wants to walk up stairs or go on a walk on a beautiful day. To be completely honest I don’t think my grandmother can physically or mentally take this for another 5 years, only to be told she has to wait an x amount of time for a lung. I’m wondering if there is anything/anybody I can talk to.. anything I can do to get her a lung!!!!!!
haha btw Im not asking for people to donate a lung on yahoo answers, we have plenty of people within our family and friends willing to do that…

Honey, I am sorry but if you’re looking to get your grandmother a lung on yahoo answers, it’s not going to work. I’m not saying she’ll never get a lung, but, not many people are willing to give something of theirs up like that. It takes a real special person to be able to give up their lung. It’s a sad truth, I know. But don’t give up sweetheart, just pray.

68 year old Lung Cancer Survivor needs advice about Nutrition, Exercise, etc.?
Question by : 68 year old Lung Cancer Survivor needs advice about Nutrition, Exercise, etc.?
As the survivor’s daughter, I am wanting information and advice on nutrition, exercise and how to improve the health and way of life of my very loving and caring 68 year old father. Here is a little background- My father is a 6 year lung cancer survivor who has always been a workaholic and provided for his family. He worked during his treatment, after his treatment and retired in 2008 after the business he managed closed. Being at home with my mother for 3 years, HE HAS AGE 30 YEARS !!! His breathing problems have become worse, he shakes, looses weight quickly, walks by shuffling his feet and has lost most of his strength. He has also fallen several times this past year. Thank god he hasn’t been hospitalized for falling or pneumonia. Can anyone suggest what I can do to improve his way of life? ( I am trying to hold back the tears ). My parents have been married for 47years and my mother (and even my father) is in denial of just how critical this is. Any advice and suggestions about how to improve his nutrition, exercise and lifestyle are welcome. Thank you all.
Thank you for the suggestions so far. My father sees his family doctor every 2 months, or sooner if he needs to. He also sees the doctor’s that diagnosed him, treated him, and even the radition doctor at our Cancer Center every 4 months. I am definately going to check out our local swim center and what they offer for seniors with medical conditions.
I am still interested in reading any suggestion from cancer surivors or their caregivers. Are there things you did that worked ok, didn’t work at all, or that you would highly suggest? What worked for keeping the muscle strength you have and improved your with balance? What foods, vitamins, etc. works best to help you keep weight on and what are you/ they are doing to maintain or improve their overall health.
Best answer:
Answer by Tiny
Yes! I can tell you that swimming and getting in the pool is a great way for seniors to get exercise and not have to worry about falling or over doing it. The pool offers support and buoyancy, heat for old sore muscles, and resistance for efficient strength and resistance training. Just walking in a pool has great benefits. If he can swim or kick great! Find ut where you can get him into a pool program soon. One for seniors that has a ramp for their walkers or wheelchairs, allows for oxygen machines or cylinders and their hoses, and has a lifeguard familiar with seniors and their unique needs. The pool has done wonders for my 70 year old mother.

Last Breath Trailer 1997 Cystic Fibrosis regarding a wife that needs a lung trasnplant

Review Summary www.pegsoninthepresent.com Luke Perry stars in this surprisingly moving adult drama about a devoted husband whose wife (Francie Swift) is dying of cystic fibrosis. Because of her rare blood type, she can’t get new lungs, so Perry begins a frantic search to find a donor. Eventually, he becomes so desperate that he starts having an affair with a real-estate agent (Gia Carides) whom he plans to murder because she’s a match with Swift and has signed her donor card. Director PJ Posner shows a surprising amount of sensitivity and character development in what was obviously designed to be no more than a cheap erotic thriller. Perry and Swift are believable and sympathetic, and the portrait of Swift’s degenerating condition and Perry’s desperation is moving and poignant. Only a cliched scene tacked on at the end gives the film’s intentions away despite its frequent sexual situations and nudity. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide

19 Year old, Caucasian male needs opinion on whether at risk of lung cancer. AKA should I see doc ASAP?
Question by Maybon: 19 Year old, Caucasian male needs opinion on whether at risk of lung cancer. AKA should I see doc ASAP?
I am a smoker have smoked for around 5 years, currently I have decided to quit and am currently smoking less than 5 smokes a day. However my question relates to lung cancer; I have had around 8 bronchial infections and pneumonia once. A little over a week ago I coughed up a rather nasty looking bit of phlegm with what looked like a vein/artery in it (some blood). This caused me to become anxious about it, I have read that no-one really gets lung cancer at my age but I have a few symptoms that I have read online. These include:
- Coughing up blood
- Pain in my lower right end of ribcage that wont go away (hurts more if I lie face down)
- Smoker (was mainly marijuana through water pipe, also cigarettes though)
- Loss of appetite
- Dropped from 70-65Kg
I also should note that the loss of appetite may be a withdrawal symptom of quitting marijuana (about a month ago) and I have what I am guessing is an inflamed lymph node or thyroid gland on neck. Next to my collar bone in the center of my neck which is about 1+1/2cm X 1/2cm.
Should I be worried and see my GP ASAP? or should I just mention it next time I visit? or is there virtually no risk of someone my age getting lung cancer? Very worried about it.
Thanks in advance!
I depended on marijuana to eat and sleep and for a couple of days after quitting was unable to sleep and ate about 1/2 a meal a day. Other than that I know there’s no physical withdrawals, I’d say both those things are mental dependencies for me anyway.
Cheers for the advice, I’ll see my doc tomorrow.

Answer by birdgirl123
Certainly if you have questions such as these, it’s best to get an exam now – cancer is not particular in whom it strikes and age is not relevant. You will find that when you quit or even decrease your level of smoking, you will start coughing up some terrifically bad stuff as your lungs clear out the nicotine and tar from the cigarettes and marijuana (even if it was through a water pipe). Some of it can look pretty much like dried blood and comes up in (disgusting) chunks. But contact your GP and take whatever advice the GP gives you as far as getting examined. Since you’ve been prone to lung problems, the GP may think it’s better for you to come in right away.

Who needs Glutathione?
Who needs Glutathione?
Article by Lindley Miras
The simple answer… If you have an immune system, you need glutathione……
If you are healthy and want to maintain your health, enhancing your GSH levels you can help your body maintain it’s optimal health. It is important to know that as you age, your body’s production of glutathione slowly decreases starting from about 20 years of age. The rate of decline really increases from the age of 40 onwards.
“Glutathione circulates constantly throughout your body neutralizing free radicals and removing dangerous waste products and toxins from your system while increasing your level of energy. When your Glutathione level is high, your overall health is high. You feel good and you look good. You fight off minor illnesses quickly, you have plenty of energy, and you feel mentally and physically alert… you’re at an optimal level of good health.”
What health conditions benefit from a glutathione?
There are more than 74,000 clinical studies on GSH and its effects on disease. In general terms any weakened Immune system, Neurodegenerative, and Autoimmune conditions can benefit from a boost in GSH. The American HealthCare Foundation lists some conditions such as Allergy, Alzheimer’s, Asthma, Autism, Cancer, Cholesterol, Chronic Fatigue, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Glaucoma, Gout, Heart Disease, HIV that are proven to be improved with a boost to your GSH levels.
People who needs Glutathione:1. smokers2. alcoholic drinkers3. 40 years old and above4. who exercise excessively / body builders5. low sperm count6. liver problems7. has cataracts8. on chemotherapy recovery9. exposed to chemicals/pesticides10.low immune system11.who consumes fish oils & VCORaising glutathione levels: some possible clinical applications:1. Putting It All Together
Medical science is still ascertaining all the critical roles played by glutathione in disease resistance and general good health. Clinical evidence links low glutathione levels to the most common illnesses of our time as well as newly emerging diseases. Pharmaceutical medicine has created drugs that do this very effectively. They have their uses in critical situations. But they also have side effects and repeated use is clearly inadvisable.

Does god give man the tools he needs to survive?
Question by Kevin S: Does god give man the tools he needs to survive?
An estimated 21,000 people per yer die of Lung Cancer in the USA from Radon exposure according to the EPA (the second leading cause of Lung Cancer after smoking, btw). If so, why has God not given humans the ability to detect fatal gasses like Radon and Carbon Monoxide?

EDIT; Read again. Radon is NATURALLY OCCURRING. It doesn’t have anything to do with modern technology. As for god giving us a brain to build detectors, what about those who died for thousands of years before such detectors were invented?
EDIT; Shiloh, the reason Nature does not endow humans with the ability to detect certain toxins is because evolution is not a conscious process. Evolution is not endlessly creative. Evolution doesn’t “seek” perfection, it only filters out the populations that are not fit enough to successfully pass on their genetic material. So life is “good enough” to survive for a while under certain circumstances in naturalism, but theists cannot claim the eye or nose is engineered by a perfect god to help us survive when there are so many things a human engineer would improve that god neglected.
