At my job they smoke inside the office, the bathroom, small kitchen they have here, its against the law, help?
Question by Small Business Man: At my job they smoke inside the office, the bathroom, small kitchen they have here, its against the law, help?
I have been working at this job for about 9 months now, in the beginning they would all go outside and smoke, now for the past few months they feel they can smoke in there office, bathroom, kitchen, storage room, etc., they feel because they can close the door to the room that they are in it shouldn’t effect anybody else. This is a small company, 10 – 12 workers, two big offices, the bosses own office, small kitchen, storage room, two bathrooms and a big warehouse, its the bosses who are the ones smoking, and like 2 or 3 of the other workers here. I know its against the law to smoke inside a place of business, especially when you have people working. Not to mention that I am a Cancer Survivor of Head & Neck Cancer that might be related to being around Smoke all my life, even though I never smoked a day in my life… Who can I report this company to? Fire department? who can I call and make a anonymous call to complain about them smoking in here and get them in trouble? They have so many fire hazards here as well, the Sprinklers on the ceiling are all dusty and clogged from the smoke, if a fire happens in here we will all die. No offense but I work for a Russian Boss, Russian Manager and a few Russian Co-workers, all the people that smoke are Russians except one person, the Russian people I work with are very stuck up, they feel like they are God and they can do what they want.
How do I put a stop to this? where do I report this health hazard and fire hazard?

Employers in the field of Law won’t be interested if you don’t have any legal background AT ALL. Employers in the field of Law don’t have time to train you from square one.
Warning! Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!! This is not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING vocational field. Many reasons. THE main reason?……We simply have WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals – we have a GLUT!! (“Legal Professionals” includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)
Regarding being a “non-legal office volunteer”: Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law want employees with BACHELORS degrees. Those “certificates” you see advertised aren’t worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally scams.
Even IF you finish law school, you won’t be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work “down” as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of THEIR bills paid Now... the law schools know this, but they won't tell you the truth >that the job market/economy is SATURATED with WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will LIE to you. AND the schools continue to recruit and churn out even MORE Legal Professionals…………. If you don’t believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. In the book “So You Want to be a Lawyer? by Marianne Calabrese and susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): “The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate EACH YEAR from 200 law schools in the United States. The competition is very keen for jobs and clients.” If you want a JOB when you are done with your studies, consider and look into the field of HEALTHCARE! Good luck. I am investigating (yes,me) a lawyer who is an independent attorney at law. This particular lawyer tends to do all her own work without a secretary or paralegal which is okay if you know what you are doing. But she resides in the offices of another law firm. What is this? Legal? Morally wrong?

Radon: What Is It and How to Test Your Home and Office
Radon is a colourless, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas that can seep into your home or office through cracks in floors, walls and foundations. Why is radon harmful? Radon that enters an enclosed space can sometimes accumulate to high levels. Long-term exposure to radon can increase your risk of developing lung cancer – it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada. The only way to determine whether your home or office has a high radon level is to test for it. To test your home or office for radon, order a radon test kit from SRC’s Environmental Analytical Laboratories. Call toll-free 1-800-240-8808 or email analytical@src.sk.ca. www.src.sk.ca

Q&A: Staccybotrys was found in my office. How can I make sure the plants are not carrying it if I bring them home?
Question by glowski@sbcglobal.net: Staccybotrys was found in my office. How can I make sure the plants are not carrying it if I bring them home?
I have several large potted plants in my office. I am closing the office due to “sick building syndrome” and I hate to see the huge floor plants die, but I am afraid to bring them home for fear of contamination my home with the mold.
Best answer:
Answer by The Muse
You’ll need to isolate the plants from any others you have at home. If any of them show illness, you’ll have to get rid of the whole lot and you COULD carry this from room to room. Is it worth it? Only you can decide.

Petition in Office for Sick Building Syndrome?
Question by Meredith O: Petition in Office for Sick Building Syndrome?
My office has 80% (or close to 80%) closed ventilation and when one person gets sick, everyone else gets sick because viruses and bacteria and such just circulates over and over again in the building (otherwise known as Sick Building Syndrome).
Is there a petition I can get my co workers and bosses to sign? Everyone thinks it’s a good idea. I don’t know how to write a petition for that, if there was one already in use that I can just fill in our specific building info and have everyone sign it, it’d be a HUGE help. Thanks!
* A petition to open the ventilation more.
Best answer:
Answer by olinader
i looked and didn’t find a ready-made petition, but the below link should be a good resource for you.
also, petitions shouldn’t be overly technical or long. simply state the problem, suggest a remedy (like improved outside-air-ventilation) and ask for support. this can be a short paragraph.

Q&A: Think an allergen/chemical in office building causing my illness? How do I proceed?
Question by Alyssa: Think an allergen/chemical in office building causing my illness? How do I proceed?
I have worked in a governmental facility for over a year now. During the past year, I have had the most severe, upper respiratory infections of my life, include one hospitalization and two emergency visits that required steroid usage to prevent my throat from closing from inflammation. I have also had the worse migraines/sinus headaches/sinusitis the entire time. I have missed a considerable amount of work (which looks bad because I’ve worked for less than a year). My medical records will show that I have never had any issues with allergens. I know that there is ‘contained’ asbestos in our building and there is a chance of mold. I was speaking with coworkers and they said people that have previously been in my office have had similar upper respiratory infections/problems.
I spoke with my supervisor about the consistency of my illnesses and am trying to see if the ducts can be tested or even cleaned, but are there any other options? As I mentioned, I have been off work off-and-on, one time for over a week, due to the severity of my illnesses. My physicians have been unable to explain why I have been getting so sick and it wasn’t until a coworker mentioned my office causing these similar problems that I thought it could be work related. I just want to try and validify my absences if possible, as I’ve gotten a warning about being gone so often, but I literally feel like I’m going to die when I do get sick, and its at least every 3 months. Its like I can’t get rid of it!

My office building has had problems with the boiler. I overheard there is asbestos should i be concerned?
Question by Rebecca W: My office building has had problems with the boiler. I overheard there is asbestos should i be concerned?
There has been a problem with the boiler all week. I know that the asbestos is located near the boiler. Can this seep into the heating system. Should I be worried? and Should my employer be notifying the employees?
Actually it does need to be replaced. Currently the bigwigs are keeping it hush hush. but we are hearing talks of them getting a temporary boiler in until the old one is replaced…..
Best answer:
Answer by MC Wife
I would not be terribly worried about asbestos being in close proximity to a boiler.
A boiler heats water that is circulated through the building to heat air that NEVER actually touches the water. You would not have to worry about the water coming up from the boiler spreading asbestos fibers into the air.
If there is asbestos in place, it is harmless until it is disturbed. For example, if the boiler needs to be replaced, and the asbestos was in the mounting for this boiler, the replacement team would have to use strict asbestos abatement procedures when removing the old boiler. However, if that same boiler never needed to be moved, the asbestos could remain exactly where it is without harming anyone for decades.

I forgive you, Alice – Oct 2009, 48

****************************
After 25 years, the time has come to forgive Alice.
Alice in Wonderland, that is. More precisely, the statue of Alice in Wonderland that forms the centerpiece of the Delacorte Memorial in Central Park.
Why? Well, let me tell you a story…
In the early summer of 1984, my older son – who was a young boy at the time – fell from the top of the Alice in Wonderland statue one afternoon after school, and was knocked unconscious. Taken by ambulance to the emergency rom of a nearby hospital, he was soon joined by his distraught mother — who had only one question for the doctor on duty: "Will he live?" The doctor, whom we later concluded was probably workin his first day of "rounds" as a resident at the hospital, stammered, "I don’t know." Not a definitive "yes" or "no." Not even a hopeful, "I think so." Just "I don’t know."
And where was I when all of this happened? Circling overhead in an Eastern Airlines shuttle flight (remember Eastern?) on my way back from Washington, waiting to land at LaGuardia. This was in the days before Blackberries and cellphones, before Facebook and Twitter — so I had to wait until I could find a pay phone in the airport before I could call home to apologize for my delay.
My youngest son beat the babysitter to the phone, and announced in a cheerful little pipsqueak voice, "Hi, dad, Jamie’s in the hospital!"
Needless to say, it was a long night at the hospital. Fortunately for us, a world-famous pediatric neurosurgeon, whose children had befriended our kids at summer camp on Fire Island the year before, stopped by that night, took one look at Jamie, and said to us, "He’ll be fine." And he was fine — but it was still a long night. Thus, perhaps you can understand why I never forgave Alice for that long night’s vigil. Not until now.
Why now?
I hadn’t planned it, hadn’t even thought about it when I finished a routine checkup at a doctor’s office on Manhattan’s East Side yesterday, and decided to take advantage of an hour’s free time, and the crisp fall weather, to walk through Central Park to my next appointment on the West Side. I began walking through the park at 72nd Street, and happened to catch a glimpse of the small boat pond — officially known as Conservatory Water — where young children can often be seen pushing small, elaborate toy sailboats into the water, hoping that they’ll drift across to the other side.
I detoured toward the pond, hoping I might get a picturesque shot or two of such a scene (a serious photographer always has his camera ready for such fortuitous moments!), but there was only one lonely babysitter, pushing an infant in a stroller; I had forgotten that it was mid-day on a school day, so all the children who might normally frequent this area were probably in school.
As I strolled, I came to the north end of the pond, beyond which the Delacorte Memorial stands — with the aforementioned Alice in Wonderland statue. It too was deserted, but it looked peaceful and quiet in the dappled sunlight. I couldn’t help thinking how much time had passed since I was last here, and how time does indeed dull most pain, and heal most wounds…
And then I noticed something else: the green-slat wooden benches that surround the statue in a semicircle all have simple silver memorial tags, carrying a message inscribed by some patron, friend, or New York City resident who donated money to have that bench restored and placed in its spot. This is not a surprise: the benches and their memorial tags are located all through Central Park, and I’ve occasionally remarked on one or two other noteworthy tags that I’ve happened to spot. But this time, I read them all; and then I read all of the tags on the benches that surround the Conservatory Water pool to the south of the Delacorte Memorial. Some are simple and traditional, with no sign of emotion. But others are stunning in their emotional impact, written by friends and lovers, brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, grandparents and grandchildren — conveying in a few short words the full spectrum of love and gratitude, loss and sadness, celebration and grief, friendship and loyalty, hope and faith. And yes … forgiveness.
I’ve photographed them all for you, and placed them in this set. Read them all, as I did: one by one, and then in quick succession. And then perhaps you will feel moved, as I was, to forget an old grudge.
Perhaps like me, you can forgive your own Alice.
