a person with emphysema often needs to be given supplemental oxygen why is it important for this person not to?
Question by Jennifer P: a person with emphysema often needs to be given supplemental oxygen why is it important for this person not to?
a person with emphysema often needs to be given supplemental oxygen. Why is it important for this person not to get too much oxygen? one thought/hint is chemoreceptors
Best answer:
Answer by riding in style
because a person whom suffers from emphysema already is used to lower oxygen levels in the brain…so the breathing mechanism in the brain is geared for this..so when you increase oxygen you in fact are actually suffocating them..people whom need oxygen more then the average prescribed 2 liters per minute are given more only thru the medical guidance of a pulmonoligist.

Q&A: How often is a biopsy wrong?
Question by princess_cheeks09: How often is a biopsy wrong?
About 3 months ago a tumor was found in my mums lung, we were told it was only small, and in that time it has only grown 1mm. we were told that because she had not lost any weight, everything looked good and she would probably just have to have it taken out and it was unlikely that she would need any further treatment. But then her biopsy results said that it is behaving like small cell cancer. Is it more likely that her Dr’s are wrong or the biopsy? And what will happen if it is small cell cancer? Can she still have chemo or something?
Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by h3re2h3lp
If a needle biopsy was taken, the accuracy depends about the factors, but most needle biopsies will be relatively accurate.
I think if it does turn out that it is a small cell cancer, chemotherapy will most probably be available depending on how fast the cancer is spreading.
You really should ask your mothers doctor these questions, they are there to explain the process and to make you feel at ease about coping through this difficult time for you.
I hope everything turns out well for you and your family.

Nowadays, how often are toxins such as lead, asbestos etc, used to build buldings ?
Question by :::♥::Alice in Wonderland:::♥:::: Nowadays, how often are toxins such as lead, asbestos etc, used to build buldings ?
For a while before it was regulated, buildings were made of lead, asbestos, etc…..and if you tore them down, which used to be legal, the lead and toxins went into he air and one spec of paint in the lungs is enough to make someone ill. So the question is, are buildings, still constructed with toxins, and toxic chemicals?
Buildings that have signs saying “The building contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause….” Are these just old buildings that they could not tear down, or are these new buildings being legally built with these toxic chemicals?
I apologize for the type, it should be the word “the” not “he”
Best answer:
Answer by Dana1981, Master of Science
Never. Asbestos and lead based paint were banned in the early 1980s. Buildings older than that may still contain these materials, however. Hence the signs. As long as they remain undisturbed, they’re not a health threat.

In America? Never.
California has much more strict hazard laws than the rest of the states. But nobody uses asbestos or lead anymore. The contractors couldn’t afford the lawsuits.

Why Does Pouring Millions of Dollars into Cancer Research Often Do Nothing at All?
.Unfortunately, the basic assumption is wrong. The money “poured” into cancer research has markedly increased cancer survival. You have to realize that up until the mid-1940s there were no treatments for cancer and no one survived. Here’s whats happened in the past 50 years to childhood cancer survival (overall childhood survival is 82%; stjude.org) In adults its a little grimmer, but overall survival went from 50% in 1975 to 68% in 2006 (cancer.org). Overall, both the incidence and death rates for cancer are decreasing. So, how is this doing nothing at all? Incidence is down; death rate is down; survival is up. This didn’t just happen; it came from 50 years of a lot of people doing a lot of research. Decreased incidence is perhaps the hardest to argue and relate to research, but clearly research on prevention, carcinogens and cancer causes (smoking for example) played a role. It’s also helpful to realize a couple of things about research. The first is that it’s very often unsuccessful. The experiment was set up; the clinical trial was run; it didn’t work. but still costs a lot of money. Was that research or trial in vain? Hardly. Everything provides part of the answer, no matter how small. Some times it’s just a matter of learning “what not to do” so you can do it better next time. The other related thing, particularly true in cancer therapies, is that science often incremental. Small advances build understanding that lead to big advances or breakthroughs. Rarely does a …

How often should you bathe someone who is bedridden and how do you avoid bed sores?
Question by Sophia, the blue-eyed goddess: How often should you bathe someone who is bedridden and how do you avoid bed sores?
my little sister has Cystic Fibrosis and had a lung transplant recently, she’s very sick in general, and is not able to do anything on her own, is helpless, we also have to diaper her because she can’t control anything. I help take care of her a lot, i just want to know what the best way to avoid bed sores/rashes is and also how often is best to give a sponge bath? She’s 13 and very small/thin for her age.
Best answer:
Answer by Shaw1Net6
That’s great to hear that you are helping to take care of your sister…
But to try and avoid bed sores, make sure that you are constantly checking her diaper ever so often so that she is not lying in her feces/urine for too long. Also, so that a rash does not occur, use vaseline to keep her moist.
Also, it may be best to give her a sponge bath at least twice a day since she cannot physically get into a shower.
I hope this helps and good luck with everything.

Cystic Fibrosis? how often do you get lung infections?
Question by : Cystic Fibrosis? how often do you get lung infections?
would you get pneumonia alot more the twice a year
Best answer:
Answer by THX3andMe
I have two children with Cystic Fibrosis. The number of lung infections vary significantly from person to person. Just like some people catch everything and some people never get sick. My kids fight lung infections most of the year and mainly with antibiotics at home. When that doesn’t work, they have to go into the hospital for i.v. therapy. My daughter didn’t have to go into the hospital for the first time until 9 years after diagnosis. My son had to go in 6 months after diagnosis, again about 2 1/2 years later and then not for about 8 years. Now they go in 1-2 times a year on average. But I had friends online that had to go in the hospital every 3 months on average. Too many things affect each person with CF – like which mutation do they have? or how susceptible to infection are they? How compliant are they with their daily meds and treatments? Also, you need to know this is a progressive disease with no cure – yet. Sorry – I hope this helps…
