What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
Question by : What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
What is the risk to nurses working in the cancer field (oncology) due to their proximity to cancer causing drugs and radiation and chemotherapy? I am hearing stories of many oncology nurses loosing their hair?
Best answer:
Answer by Don’t Call Me Crazy
Cancer causing drugs? I’m sure you mean drugs used in treating cancer. You can check the Material Safety Data Sheet (they should be on file in human resources with the occupational safety representative) to determine the risk of exposure to those chemicals or chemical compounds. As far as exposure to radiation? There is a test to determine whether you have been exposed to radiation and to what degree, though I doubt it would be necessary as long as established procedures are followed at the hospital.

i put my camera in a “black box”, and my friend – who is undergoing radiation therapy for mouth cancer – was wearing this box on his belt. my poor camera recorded beautiful images while sustaining quite some damage from the linear accelerator’s beams… keep in mind that this was only SCATTERED RADIATION. the main beam has an absolutely deadly intensity.
