Oral cancer scare! what are the small brown bumps on the inside of my cheek?
Question by Narry: Oral cancer scare! what are the small brown bumps on the inside of my cheek?
I confess that i am a smoker, both of legal and sometimes illegal substances. I just discovered a few small brown lumps inside my mouth, near the center of both cheeks, what are these? pictures and symptoms I’ve found online don’t say anything about small brown bumps, but they also say oral cancer can be very deadly if not looked at quickly. I’m asking any oral health professional: should i be worried?

Answer by Memere RN/BA
It doesn’t sound serious but your best answer would be to see an Oral Surgeon. I smoked for 40+ years and never had these. I don’t smoke anymore though. (had to stress that ) This is not to say these bumps are to be ignored. I wouldn’t especially if it happened when I smoked. Did you happen to bite your cheek? You would have remembered that. I am not a oral health professional, but I do know what I’m talking about as would most medical people. I are a colege gradgeate. LOL. Just kidding. Trying to get you to laugh. Please, make an appointment with an oral surgeon OK. I wish you the best. If you need help quitting, I’m available for advice.

Why is oral hygiene linked to more serious diseases such as heart and types of cancer?
Question by nobody you know: Why is oral hygiene linked to more serious diseases such as heart and types of cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by Chas
Bacteria that live in the mouth can release toxins that are reputed to move, via nerve connections or blood vessels, I can’t remember which, to other parts of the body. The heart and brain are targets that I have heard ot.
If mouth hygiene is bad, then there will be more, and worse, bacteria thus more and worse toxins.
Hope this helps.

Oral Contraceptives and Cancer?
Question by JaiGuruDeva; NGCMW Ω: Oral Contraceptives and Cancer?
Ok well, I talked to a few people about this, my mom especially, and apparently you’re not supposed to stay on the pill for any great lengths of time? I heard that it could increase the risk in cancer but is it that great of a risk? She strongly advizes that I wait a few more years before I seriously consider it, but I really want to start them soon for my acne and irregular periods. Plus some pills help with PMS symptoms (and I get those bad, like people want to stay a mile away from me I get that b!tchy), Sigh. What exactly are the chances that I’ll get breast, ovarian, cervical, or liver cancer from taking the pill starting now? I’m 17 years old and I honest to God don’t want the pill just for sexual purposes. I really want the other benefits from it (minus weight gain). Please give me your advice. Is it really worth it?

How big should an oral cancer get in order for it to be rendered incurable.?
Question by Blue: How big should an oral cancer get in order for it to be rendered incurable.?
About 7 years ago I noticed a very tiny hard painless growth in my mouth below the gum, it was like a small grin of sand, now it’s diameter is like half a centimeter. Do you think it’s too late to get it cured?
Is it possible for it to have spread all over my head because I sense I am losing my hair (I’m 24)
Supposing the hair loss was caused by the cancer will I grow my hair back if the cancer is cured?
How is oral cancer treated?
What is the cost involved?
Best answer:
Answer by ztim
Oral cancer can be treated at any stage even if it means removing half of your jaw. Get it checked now.
Losing your hair has nothing to do with it.
A simple biopsy will tell you if the lump is cancerous. The cost will depend on where you are.
Get it done now and good luck to you.

Oral Sex leading cause of oral cancer!?
Question by : Oral Sex leading cause of oral cancer!?
Oral sex could be hazardous to your health.
So say researchers who note that oral cancer stemming from the human papilloma virus is more common in the U.S. than oral cancer caused by abusing tobacco.
Researchers found a 225% increase in oral cancer cases in the U.S. from 1974 to 2007, mainly among white men, said Maura Gillison, a cancer researcher at Ohio State University.
The more oral-sex partners a man had, the greater his cancer risk, Gillison told a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Tobacco use remains the leading cause of oral cancer in the rest of the world.
There as many as 150 different types of human papilloma viruses, and about 40 of those can be sexually transmitted, according to the National Cancer Institute.
HPV infections often go undetected and are the main cause of cervical cancer in women.
Scientists are examining whether Gardasil and Cervarix, the HPV vaccines approved to prevent genital warts and cervical cancer, could have a significant impact on oral cancer.
In the meantime, researchers are urging doctors and educators to start talking to teens in particular about the risks of oral sex.

Why do you gain weight when taking oral steroids?
Question by Mia: Why do you gain weight when taking oral steroids?
I just found out I have a lung condition that will have to be treated with steroids. I have always been a thin person and I am afraid of the weight gain side effect. Does anyone know why you gain weight from taking steroids and if you can prevent weight gain? Thanks.
Best answer:
Answer by cryptoxmit
Steroids may cause you to retain salt and fluids so that your weight increases. Weight gain caused by fluid retention will gradually decrease when you stop taking the medication. In the meantime, to minimize fluid retention:
a. Follow a low salt diet, if cleared by your physician.
1. Do not add salt to your food when cooking or eating.
2. Avoid very salty foods such as pork, ham, bacon, tomato juice, salted nuts, bouillon, canned soups, cheese, salted crackers, snack foods, seasoned salt, soy or Worcestershire sauce, catsup, canned meats or fish, corned beef, sausage, peanut butter and foods labeled as having a high sodium content.
Steroids will also cause redistribution of body fat to places that are undesirable, particularly the face, back of the neck, and abdomen.
Good luck .. life is full of necessary evils … I wish you the best of health ….

Oral Cancer Survivor Sings! “My Jesus”
At 19, Our son Corey Gilliland was diagnosed with tongue cancer in October of 2008. He underwent 9 hours of surgery to remove half of his tongue and 22 lymph nodes in his neck. Surgeons where able reconstruct his tongue by using skin, muscle, and veins from his left arm. His recovery was very painful. Since the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, he endured 6 weeks of radiation (33 treatments) and chemotherapy (3 rounds of chemo). The burns in his throat and mouth were very severe (equivalent to third degree burns) and made it painful to even swallow water. Corey lost 85 lbs in less than 4 months. His doctors had said that he would require speech and swallow therapy and would always have slurred speech. To their amazement he has never needed it. He speaks perfectly. Despite all of the obstacles Corey remained determined to beat the odds as he knew he had Jesus to walk with him through this storm. Our family can’t begin to praise God enough for the countless answered prayers by our family, friends and especially Pastor Carl, the preacher of Corey’s church. I especially want to thank Debi and Connie who are also oral cancer survivors for their prayers, encouragement and knowledge. After you watch this video I encourage you to praise God! for His awesome healing power and grace. Praise Him for the technology that the gifted and talented doctors and surgeons at Moffit Cancer Center used to treat Corey at the guidance of the Almighty Healer and Great Physician! Thanks to …
Oral Cancer: Treatment and Reconstruction
For months Carolyn Coogan pursued dental solutions for the pain in her jaw. Then an MRI revealed cancer. Coogan and Dr. Neal Futran, director of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center, recount the diagnosis and her available treatment options. Coogan’s treatment crossed medical disciplines, involving surgeries to remove cancer and reconstruct the jaw, and installation of the dental prosthesis. The program includes still images from Coogan’s jaw surgeries and models of the bones involved.

Question On Radiation Therepy for Oral Cancer?
Question by MochaAlmondgt: Question On Radiation Therepy for Oral Cancer?
After surgery, is it normal to have high doses of Radiation for the head and Neck, if Cancer is on the tongue? Also, is 5 days a week, for 20 minutes each session of radiation for 7 weeks total a lot ? How many ppl get long term side effects, such as loss of Saliva glands or infections?
Best answer:
Answer by Tarkarri
My brother had cancer on the tonsil (squamous cell carcinoma) and had radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks as part of his treatment.
20 mins sounds a long time! Are you sure this is all radiation time and not just set-up time? My own appointments for radiation were 20 min appointments but actual radiation time was about 90 seconds!
My brother experienced severe mouth ulcers during the course of his treatment, to the point he was having difficulty swallowing. He was on a drip for fluids and lost a lot of weight! His salivary glands have been permanently affected and he now has to have a sip of water with each mouthful of food when eating.
But he is ALIVE!!! Happy and healthy again!
We were diagnosed with different cancers within a month of each other so went through treatments together – we made an interesting totem pole when both bald from the chemo! LOL.

risk of lung and oral cancer by age?
Question by Surdus: risk of lung and oral cancer by age?
recently i have become a bit of a hypochondriac towards cancer, ideally oral and lung. admittedly i do smoke and used to smoke roughly 10 a day, but my switch from cigs to rollies have cut the number in halve.
im 19 know and have seen the diagnosis ratio of lung cancer from 2005 and it almost seems that it is impossible to get lung cancer before teh age of 30, i know it IS possible, but im less worried about that.
so im more looking at the risks of oral cancer and the likeliness at my age.
i am going to see my GP 2morrow to get a little reassurance because at the moment i have a cold/sore throat and looking with a light and mirrow i can see the back of my throat has swollen up along with red rash marks.
so before i go, can someone please just tell me the odds of getting either cancer at my age of 19 while smoking 5-10 a day? thanks.
Best answer:
Answer by Adi H
Anybody can get lung cancer even people who never smoked however people who smoke are more likely to get lung cancer than people who don’t smoke. i wouldn’t worry about lung cancer at 19 and you only been smoking not long and not many cigs a day. my dad died from lung cancer recently but he smoked for 35 years about 20 cigs a day and i know what symptoms he had before he was diagnosed so unless you are having pressistent cough chest pain shoulder pain coughing pleghm than you don’t have lung cancer but if you want to make yourself feel better than go and see the doctor and ask him about lung cancer. Quit smoking if you want to reduce chances of getting lung cancer and other illnesses.

Multiple Sclerosis: AN EXPLOSION OF HOPE. THE ORAL DRUGS ARE ON THE WAY!!!!
Talking about some new oral drugs for multiple sclerosis that show great promise. My eyes filled with tears as I read about how close research on MS is to actually curing the disease and it starts with effective treatment to modify the disease. Here are the drugs. Please research them. _FAMPRIDINE-SR (to be trade named AMAYA). This drug works by improving nerve conduction causing MS sufferers to walk better, faster, with less difficulty. _Fingolimod (formerly known as experimental drug FTY720). Disease modifying drug that has proven to be superior in efficacy to beta interferon 1a. Tried at 0.5 mg and 1.25 mg in clinical trials. The higher dose had moderate-severe complications like lung infections, macular edema, and reported cases of skin cancer (melanoma); however, the lower dose of 0.5 mg is as effective with less risk for serious complications. (Clinical trials prevent drugs from being marketed before their safety is established) This drug showed in clinical trials that 83% of patients were relapse-free while in the clinical trial. _clabridine (trade name Mylinax). Disease modifyiing drug that supresses the immune system. 90% of neurologists would prescribe this due to the fact that it is as effective as betaferons but with less side effects. Tobacco and alcohol may cause oral cancer
Tobacco and alcohol may cause oral cancer
Article by Izidental
We all know that tobacco and alcohol can cause lung cancer. Do you know it may also cause oral cancer? Oral cancer is a subtype of head and neck cancer is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. When you see Sore, lump, or ulcer in the mouth, or have some Chewing problems, Mouth sores, Pain with swallowing, Speech difficulties or some other bad signs with your oral, please go to your dentist immediately since it may a sign of order cancer.Tobacco Smoking and other tobacco use are associated with about 75 percent of cancer cases, caused by irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth from smoke and heat of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Tobacco contains over 60 known carcinogens, and the combustion of it, and by products from this process, is the primary mode of involvement. Use of chewing tobacco or snuff causes irritation from direct contact with the mucous membranes.Tobacco use in any form by itself, and even more so in combination with heavy alcohol consumption, continues to be an important risk factor for cancer. However, due to the current trends in the spread of HPV16, as of early 2011 the virus is now considered the primary causative factor in 63% of newly diagnosed patients.AlcoholAlcohol use is another high-risk activity associated with oral cancer. There is known to be a very strong synergistic effect on oral cancer risk when a person is both a heavy smoker and drinker. The risk is greatly increased compared to a heavy smoker, or a heavy drinker alone. Recent studies in Australia, Brazil and Germany point to alcohol-containing mouthwashes as also being etiologic agents in the cancer risk family. Constant exposure to these alcohol containing rinses, even in the absence of smoking and drinking, lead to significant increases in the development of oral cancer. However, studies conducted in 1985, 1995, and 2003 summarize that alcohol-containing mouth rinses are not associated with cancer. In a March 2009 brief, the American Dental Association said “the available evidence does not support a connection between oral cancer and alcohol-containing mouth rinse” A 2008 study suggests that acetaldehyde (a break-down product of alcohol) is implicated in oral cancer. This study specifically focused on abusers of alcohol and made no reference to mouthwash. Any connection between cancer and mouthwash is tenuous without further investigation. How to prevent?1. Avoid smoking or other tobacco use2. Have dental problems corrected3. Limit or avoid alcohol use4. Practice good oral hygiene
