Patrick Swayze and smoking a cig with pancreatic cancer?
Question by butterfliesRfree: Patrick Swayze and smoking a cig with pancreatic cancer?
AND SO WHAT???? What difference does it make? What do you think about this? Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers out there — a 6 month life as a rule after being diagnosed so he doesn’t have long to live. The fact that he’s smoking a cigarette? So what?????
My father had lung cancer and he WAS on his deathbed. He was almost gone — in and out of a coma and he sounded like he wanted something and I asked him “dad, what do you want?” and he JUST wanted a couple drags off a cigarette — it wasn’t going to kill him any faster OR sooner……
The media is taking something horrible and making it WORSE…..nothing new.
What is your opinion?
Best answer:
Answer by Mr. Vincent Van Jessup
I want to know who was criticizing him for smoking. No one I have heard. I hope this wasn’t a tabloid item, but it sure sounds like it. They always attack the ill with any ammo they can get hold of.

i dont beleive that you can survive with a pancreas.
a friend of mine had pancreatic cancer and her partially removed, along with a couple of other organs that were closeby. she also had 6 months of chemo and radiation.she is really beating the odds by having been cancer free for 2 years now
however, her diet is very restricted, virtually no processed sugar, hardly any fats, no meat, all organic foods she takes mega vitamins.

What are the chances of getting pancreatic cancer if my great grandpa had it?
Question by veljko b: What are the chances of getting pancreatic cancer if my great grandpa had it?
All in the title. It kind of worries me but i’m just not sure how it would be passed through the family. He was the first in the family to ever get it. My dads side didn’t have any cases of cancer but it was my moms moms dad (Great grandpa).
Thanks a bunch,
Veljko

Was he a smoker? it is 2 – 3 times more common in smokers than non-smokers.
Diabetes also increases the risk.
There is a higher risk of developing this if it runs in your family (tends to be grouped with ovarian and coloc cancer risk) but a single case does not make this a family risk.
Age is a big risk factor so if he was over 65 when diagnosed it is less likely to be a genetic tendency.
If his was the inherited form, your grandmother has a 1 in 2 chance of inheriting the tendency, your mother a 1 in 4 chance and you have a 1 in 8 chance!

My father-in-law has liver, lung and pancreatic cancer. Why would he be disoriented and have a bladder infect?
Question by : My father-in-law has liver, lung and pancreatic cancer. Why would he be disoriented and have a bladder infect?
My father-in-law has been going through Chemo for liver, lung and pancreatic cancer. However, last night he was admitted to the hospital with a 102.5 fever and dry mouth. They said he was dehydrated and probably had a bladder infection. (Anything over 101 fever in a chemo patient, calls for an admission to the hospital.) However, he was also very disoriented and out of sorts. I am not in the state where my father-in-law is, so I don’t know that I am getting all the facts. Could anyone help explain to me why he may be disoriented and not being able to remember things with a simple bladder infection? I can’t find anything doing a search online. Thank you so much for your time!

Answer by DrJamesD.C.
Disorientation could be a side effect of medications, he could also have a more extensive infection than the bladder infection. our prayers are with him and your family.

Detection of Bile Duct and Pancreatic Cancers Doubles With New Tests
Pancreatic cancer and bile duct cancer are difficult to diagnose and often fatal because they are discovered in the advanced stages of the disease. Researchers have developed new tests that double the ability to detect bile duct and pancreatic cancers according to a Mayo Clinic study Bile duct and pancreatic cancers are very difficult to diagnose, says Lewis Roberts, MD, Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist and senior author on the study. We were very pleased to see that the combination of FISH and cytology significantly improved our chances of diagnosing patients reliably. The earlier we can diagnose a patient, the better the types of treatment we can offer and the more likely they are to have long-term survival after treatment.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness.wmv
Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all the major cancers. 94% of those diagnosed do not live beyond five years of diagnosis. Surgery is only an option for 15% of patients. 75% of patients will only live up to a year; those with advanced cancer, on average, only survive 3-6 months after diagnosis. In 2009, the National Cancer Institute only allocated a mere 2% of their Billion budget to pancreatic cancer research! This MUST change NOW! Awareness is the first step…

Real News @ RevolutionNews.US — RESEARCHERS AT the University of Birmingham have identified a new form of ecstasy that kills blood cancer cells in a test-tube within 24 hours. When the drug attaches to the cancer it causes the cells to self-destruct. It is a “clean way of destroying the cancer” said John Gordon, professor of cellular immunity at the University of Birmingham. “The cells kill themselves and all the bad parts are naturally removed, so there are less side-effects compared to chemotherapy, for example.” Collaborating with scientists at the University of Western Australia, the Birmingham team identified a version of the ecstasy drug that is 100 times more powerful than the recreational version. The work is published in Investigational New Drugs. The amount of ecstasy needed to treat cancer would be enough to kill a person, so the drug had to be modified. The team had to “redesign the designer drug”, Prof Gordon said. Preliminary work suggests the new modified drug causes fewer nasty side-effects which ecstasy-users experience, including neurotoxicity. “The prospect of being able to target blood cancer with a drug derived from ecstasy is a genuinely exciting proposition,” said Dr David Grant, scientific director of the charity Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, which part-funded the study. The link between ecstasy and cancer was discovered more than six years ago, when Prof Gordon’s group saw the blood cancers were making very similar chemicals to the ones ecstasy …

My friend is dying from pancreatic cancer. What can I do to help?
Question by winechan: My friend is dying from pancreatic cancer. What can I do to help?
My friend was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a particularly virulent form of cancer that spreads very quickly. His first opinion gave him 7-8 months, maybe a year; his second gave him less than that. He owns a business in Houston and has a lot of friends, so we’re throwing him a benefit in which I will donate money and advertising services, but I want to know if there is anything else I can do?
Also, “Be with him.” goes without saying, so I don’t need to hear that suggestion again

Has your friend’s doctor talked to him about hospice care? Hospice is a wonderful service that includes nurses, nurse aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors, and volunteers. The goal of hospice is to allow a terminally ill person to pass away at home with dignity. Hospice will not use heroic measures to extend life or treat the cancer, but they will do anything possible to keep the person comfortable and free of pain. I am a hospice social worker and ensuring that my patients have a good QUALITY OF LIFE is the most important thing I do. With hospice, we want our patients to live life to the fullest- not have to worry about going back and forth to the hospital or to dr. appointments. I would talk to your friend about this option. I just researched online and found many hospice programs in Houston. The most impressive one I saw was Houston Hospice. Their website address is houstonhospice.org. I hope this helps. You sound like a truly wonderful friend. God bless you and your friend!
Oh, BTW, hospice will never deny a person due to inability to pay. I work at a hospice in Memphis that accepts people with no money or insurance and they get the same great care as someone with money does.

Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian tenor known for his voice and love of life, died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 71.
Here are some facts about pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer:
* About 216,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer, mostly in developed countries, are diagnosed globally each year.
* Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of any major form of cancer, killing 97 percent of patients within five years of diagnosis.
* Half of all victims die within six months of diagnosis.
* The pancreas is a gland located behind the stomach that secretes a digestive fluid and the hormone insulin.
* The best hope of survival comes with diagnosis before the tumor has spread and careful surgery. But the cancer usually spreads before patients experience any symptoms.

Why wouldn’t it be practical to use CT scans to detect pancreatic cancer?
Question by : Why wouldn’t it be practical to use CT scans to detect pancreatic cancer?
Justice Ruth Ginsburg got lucky; her pancreatic cancer was found from a CT scan in its early stages.
but doctors say using CT scans to detect pancreatic cancer is “neither practical nor affordable.”
I know the radiation from CT scans have a low but existing chance of causing cancer……
but still.
Best answer:
Answer by Tarkarri
About 1.45% of the population will develop pancreatic cancer.
Nearly 90% of these will be over 55 years of age.
As someone who is fast approaching that age group and has had a CT scan done as part of my testing for another type of cancer I would not undergo a routine screening CT , if it were available, based on those odds.
The nausea I get from the contrast medium is far worse than anything I experienced during my chemotherapy.

Pancreatic cancer treatment in India with excellent healthcare facilities

Pancreatic cancer treatment in India is the best option for many foreign patients who want to seek excellent healthcare at affordable price. Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth, and pancreatic cancer occurs when this uncontrolled cell growth begins in the pancreas. Pancreatic cancer treatment in India is performed by expert surgeons at the modern hospitals that are equipped with the latest technologies. Treatment of pancreatic cancer depends on the stage of the cancer. The Whipple procedure is the most common surgical treatment for cancers involving the head of the pancreas. This procedure involves removing the pancreatic head and the curve of the duodenum together (pancreato-duodenectomy), making a bypass for food from stomach to jejunum and attaching a loop of jejunum to the cystic duct to drain bile (cholecysto-jejunostomy). It can only be performed if the patient is likely to survive major surgery and if the cancer is localized without invading local structures or metastasizing. It can therefore only be performed in the minority of cases. Pancreatic cancer treatment in India is the safest way to treat the cancer as Indian pharmaceutical industry is among the largest in the world so there is always good store of drugs and medicine. When was the first case of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in the U.S.?
Question by : When was the first case of pancreatic cancer diagnosed in the U.S.?
I am wondering if doctors could diagnose a patient with pancreatic cancer as early as 1950. My mother told me that my grandmother died of pancreatic cancer in 1954. My father says my mother could not have known that my grandmother had pancreatic cancer–that cancer was just called “cancer” in the 1950s.

Answer by Ricky Ponting
Pancreatic cancer is a disease that affects the tissue of the pancreas, which is the fish-shaped organ that sits in back of the lower portion of the stomach that is responsible for the manufacture and secretion of enzymes and hormones important to digestion. According to American Cancer Society statistics in 2008, some 37,680 people in the United States will receive a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, with 34,290 individuals dying of the ailment. Pancreatic cancer spreads quickly and is rarely detected in its earliest stages-two reasons why it is considered such a deadly form of the disease.
