What causes heart problems in eating disorder patients?
Question by snowsoul: What causes heart problems in eating disorder patients?
How do the different types of heart problems develop? What eating disorder symptoms cause them? Is it that the heart muscle becomes weak or what? Does that affect ability to exercise or how one feels after exercising such as dizziness or breathing and stuff?
Best answer:
Answer by Ginny W
It is different for different eating disorders: for bulimics, the purging distroys cardiac muscle and also inducing vomiting is also hard on the heart. For anorexics, the body goes into starvation mode and starts to use the cardiac muscle for sustanance. in both disease the body is very malnourished and this makes the body anemic and can lead to kidney liver failure and all sorts of bad stuff. As a former bulimic i can tell you that it makes exercising extremely hard becuase they body is deprived of electrolytes, which are what make the heart work

Prior to treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, how were cancer patients treated?
Question by chrstnwrtr: Prior to treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, how were cancer patients treated?
This got me thinking. After hearing a rather gross story from the Middle Ages that dealt with a nun treating a cancerous tumor, how were cancer patients treated prior to the advent of chemotherapy and radiation?
And here’s an additional question: why does chemotherapy cause hair loss and nausea in patients?
Best answer:
Answer by Diane A
Unless a tumor could be cut out, most cancers resulted in death; although there were probably plenty of off-the -wall treatments. In the early stages of Xray therapy (think 1900s)–it was considered to be effective if the skin burned! Surgery for growths goes as far back as the Egyptians & Greeks (they used various drugs & chemicals for anesthesia).
Many Chemo drugs work by targeting the cell cycle in rapidly dividing cells (which is simply what a tumor is–very rapidly dividing & growing cells); the hair follicle is one such rapidly normal dividing cell line (your hair grows, right?) so that’s why they get “killed” off & hair falls out. So too the cells lining the GI tract are affected & you have many of the GI side effects associated with chem. That and many many drugs cause nausea in general.

Q&A: can radiation therapy patients be around infants after they have had radiation therapy?
Question by Marylyn J: can radiation therapy patients be around infants after they have had radiation therapy?
an 83 yr old friend is having radiation therapy and has been told she cannot be around infants. Can this be true? Can she be in the same room and just not hold the baby?
Best answer:
Answer by Thin Kaboudit
That seems odd, she might ought to ask the doctor for clarification…it’s possible that it’s for HER safety (weakened immune system being around a germy baby!) not for the infants! Radiation does not stay in your body unless you have radioactive implants (like in prostate cancer treatment), but my psychic powers (LOL) tell me your friend does not have a prostate!

Dr. Supriya Mohile Discusses Prostate Cancer in Elderly Patients
Supriya G. Mohile, MD, MS, associate professor, Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, University of Rochester Medical Center, discusses the prevalence and treatment options for elderly patients with prostate cancer. Mohile describes prostate cancer as primarily a disease of older people. In general, the median age for patients with prostate cancer is 79, compared to the early 70′s in colon and lung cancer. Information that is usually uncommon for older populations is more prevalent in prostate cancer because of the higher median age. Major trials investigating new therapeutic agents have enrolled more geriatric patients because of the abundance of this patient type. This has provided more data on the risks and benefits of treatment for elderly patients with prostate cancer than other types of tumors. As the population ages and people live longer with prostate cancer it becomes more challenging to treat the disease. There is a need to be careful with aggressive treatment in earlier asymptomatic stages of prostate cancer, once the disease becomes more advanced or symptomatic an aggressive treatment makes more sense.
Breast Reconstruction With a Patient’s Own Tissue
From www.beetmedicine.tv The goals of breast reconstruction have changed from simply replacing the mound of the breast so that a woman can look normal in clothes to being able to totally preserve the appearance and texture of a normal breast. Dr. Alexes Hazen talks about implants and myocutaneous flaps, a reconstruction which uses a womans own tissue. Dr. Karp describes the different types of abdominal flaps and particularly the DIEP flap which retains the most muscular strength. — Peter Pressman, MD Interviewees: Alexes Hazen, MD Director, NYU Aesthetic Surgery Center Assistant Professor & Plastic Surgeon NYU Cancer Institute at NYU Langone Medical Center and Nolan Karp, MD Director, Tisch Hospital Plastic Surgery Service Associate Professor & Plastic Surgeon NYU Cancer Institute at NYU Langone Medical Center

Once I was a member of Japanese Antarctic Expedition, as a radio operator of wintering party.
I can introduce the healer who can cure the liver cancer and the brain tumor without surgical operations. He can do without radiations or much medicines.
Also you may continue your present medical treatment with your family doctor.
May be unbelievable, but It is truth!

I hate to cast doubt on this man who appears to be sincere in his offer of help, but I would have to see iron clad scientific proof that anyone could cure any disease of any kind at long distances by mental telepathy or other means.
Especially if I had a deadly disease like cancer. Check it out if you want, but I, alas, remain sceptical of these kind of claims.

Because the lungs lose their elasticity the alveoli (little air sacs) are damaged making it difficult to breathe. Lungs become weak, extra secretions, trapped gas in the dmaged alveoli leaves them open o infection.

How do you feel when your patients get sick – cancer or die of old age?
Question by parenting is an option II: How do you feel when your patients get sick – cancer or die of old age?
We have about 7 patients with breast cancer currently, and a 89 year old patient that just passed away. It seems like just yesterday we seen him and his wife walking into the clinic with a cane. They came almost once a week until they moved into a retirement home which my doctor called over there to make sure they were getting their medications. He was so sweet. The patients with breast cancer are so sweet. I feel bad for them. It seems like everybody is getting sick.
How do you deal with patients getting seriously sick?
Best answer:
Answer by C C
You have to understand in your heart that there is both life and death in the universe and that this is the way of nature. It is true that it feels unfair when young people especially die, although that doesn’t make it any easier when you love the older ones. You have to live each day at a time and cherish the ones you love for you never know what may happen. Those who get ill need you to be there, be kind to them, and make their passing as comfortable as you can. And always do unto others…it’s very true, for each of us, but not all, will be sick or old at some point in life. Always treat the elderly or ill as if they were a member of your family for in a way, they are.

Which is better for COPD patients, Albuterol inhaler or Combivent inhaler?
Question by jim4vegas2: Which is better for COPD patients, Albuterol inhaler or Combivent inhaler?
I have the disease COPD & use an inhaler called Combivent. I have a friend with the same disease who uses Albuterol. His Dr. says Albuterol is best, my Dr. say’s combivent is the best. Who’s right? Need knowledgeable opinions please!
Best answer:
Answer by big stan
I have asthma and I have used both. I think combivent is the best and the reason is…it has albuterol in it as well as another medicine to stimulate breathing. So it should be better because it not only has albuterol but another medicine. Albuterol is fine, but not as good as combivent.

what are some of the medical managements for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases(COPD)?
Question by City Man: what are some of the medical managements for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases(COPD)?
Best answer:
Answer by chatterella
There is a natural substance called CQ10 enzyme that is supposed to help improve cell reproduction in cardiac and pulmonary patients. What it does is enhance the surrounding cell structure that makes the cell stronger and possible rejuvenates the cell itself. What COPD patients need to do is improve their lung structure and function and reduce the dependance of oxygen. My mom had this and what I learned was that once the lungs get “squishy” or in other words like a sponge that , they, the lungs actually hold fluid in and can cause all kinds of problems. Mom was on oxygen the last two years of her life, so she pretty much was homebound. She smoked all her life and didn’t quit early enough. Sad to say….it was the cause of the COPD. Good luck…
