An interview with the late Paul Fox, lead guitarist in the British punk rock band The Ruts. Fox died of lung cancer in October 2007. Three months before his death, on the 16th of July 2007, Fox headlined a concert in his own honour, teaming up for one final performance with his surviving band mates and long time Ruts’ fan, Henry Rollins, filling in for the original Ruts’ singer, Malcolm Owen. The Four Tops are an American vocal quartet, whose repertoire has included doo-wop, jazz, soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, hard rock, and showtunes. Founded in Detroit, Michigan as The Four Aims, lead singer Levi Stubbs (born Levi Stubbles, a cousin of Jackie Wilson and brother of The Falcons’ Joe Stubbs), and groupmates Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades, having gone from 1953 until 1997 without a single change in personnel. A change of line-up was finally forced upon the group when Lawrence Payton died on June 20, 1997. The band initially continued as a three-piece under the name The Tops,before Theo Peoples (formerly of The Temptations) was recruited as the new fourth member. Peoples eventually took over the role of lead singer when Stubbs suffered a stroke in 2000 with his position assumed by Ronnie McNeir. On July 1, 2005, Benson died of lung cancer with Payton’s son Roquel Payton replacing him. Levi Stubbs died on October 17, 2008. Fakir, McNeir, Payton, and Harold “Spike” Bonhart, who replaced Peoples in 2011, are still performing together as the Four Tops. Fakir is now the only surviving founding member of the original group.

Has there been any new stuff on Paul since it was revealed that he has lung cancer? I know the last picture I saw of him, he looked awful. I really love his acting and his SCCA/IMSA racing exploits…I even like Newman’s Own Sauce, etc. Here’s hoping he can pull out of this.
I used to do photography on the IMSA circuit a long time ago…and he was always the friendliest person…him and John Morton were just different from the other drivers. BTW, he started making his products from the recipes he had for making food on the road at racing venues. And any race fan knows how bad racing food is…except the brats at Road America that is.
I hope that he is surrounded by those he loves and may gets to see a few races too.
xo: I would never impose on the privacy of anyone, let alone a hero of mine like Mr. Newman. I pray that God will heal him, or at least make him comfortable in thee days. He has provided me with good food, good movies, and wonderful memories of him at the wheel of the Budweiser 280Z Turbo IMSA car. I once met him at Road America as I passed his trailer…he was eating, having one of those Paul Newman faraway looks. I asked to shake his hand…he did…and gave me a piece of garlic bread. I didn’t know whether to eat it or have it framed.
