Answer by Matt A
Those who have emphysema, part of COPD, become under weight because of increase muscle usage, respiratory failure and the inability to replace calories.
Their barreled chest is caused by air trapping. This depresses the diaphragm (main respiratory muscle) causing it not to work effectively. This will cause the patient to use “accessory” muscles to breath. Accessory muscles are not intended for regular every day breathing. This causes the patient to burn alot of calories just to take every breath.
Another reason someone with emphysema grows thin is that their breathing problem becomes so difficult that they will sacrifice eating to breathe. If you ever see someone with COPD trying to eat, they will take a bite then stop and rest. By the time they get half way done, they are exhausted. Chewing food makes breathing hard.
So a patient with end stage COPD will use alot of energy just to breath and not be able to replace the calories they need. This is refereed to as secondary malnutrition. It is secondary to the respiratory defect. I hope this helps.

What is it with people wanting to make marijuana legal?
Question by gamerdude200808: What is it with people wanting to make marijuana legal?
I really get tired of seeing people argue back and forth about why they think marijuana aka “weed” is ‘good’ for you because it comes from the earth.
Scientifically proven effects include relaxation, euphoria, altered space-time perception, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation (colloquially known as “the munchies”). It is thought to reduce aggression in certain subjects, but some of the people that I have gone to school with were more aggressive when they were on it. It’s smoke going into the lung…no matter if the “herb” is “natural”. It’s natural state is not on fire, and our lungs’ natural state is breathing air and not smoke. A forest is natural wood and plants, but if you go stand in a forest fire, it will kill you within minutes without breathing equipment. We know that when non-natural things are introduced into the body, it has the potential for cancer (and cancer is basically just cells that go crazy, forgot how to function properly and multiply massively into tumors…we seem to overlook that a lot) and other complications.
Millions of people want for it to be “legalized”…but realistically, do you want people driving around in cars, in planes, in machinery, etc. high on what would then be a ‘legal’ drug? Do people not realize the implications of that and what it would do to our already screwed-up society?
Yes, for people who have medical conditions and who are not driving, flying or operating machinery…if they are sitting around at home, it may help relieve some of their symptoms of various diseases and conditions. I do not dispute that it may have effects on those things. But for the people who want it to be legal for their daily lives…why do people not stop and think about these things if they do not even have a condition or disease that requires it?
Finally…what’s the point of the drug? Why is it necessary to sit around tripping and hallucinating or feeling euphoric all of the time? Why can’t people learn to be thankful and happy WITHOUT marijuana, drugs, alcohol, etc.? I have no problem being happy without that stuff. No, I’m not rich. No, I don’t get everything I want in life. No, my family is not perfect. No, my life does not always go as planned. No, I do not always like my job. Are any of those things reasons to try to ‘escape’ from them temporarily through smoking, drinking, etc.? Why do people feel that need? I’m certainly no better than anyone else, and my childhood growing up was not good. I had all kinds of examples of what I “could have been” to be like those people and I didn’t choose to be that way willingly, because I have common sense and see that there is no point to be that way.
Can anyone give any real insight as to why you want it to be legal? Besides false rants about how it’s supposedly ‘good’ for you and conspiracies about how the government is secretly trying to keep it from us because it’s ‘good’. I frankly see why the government made it illegal…look at the crazy stuff people did in the 70′s. AIDS and STD’s spread massively during that time, it was a period of a lot of unrest, “freedom fighters” fighting for things they couldn’t even really put into words to describe and all sorts of crazy things.
No thanks, I’m just fine without smoking it and do not need it for anything in life to be “more enjoyable” than I can have without it.
Davey – There is a difference between learning right and wrong and common sense in life that every person should have and use. You can’t go through life saying the “Don’t judge them!” If someone broke in on your mother and beat her…would you “not judge them” or would you want the judge to throw the book at them? The Bible also says that if you keep many of the laws and offend in one, you have broken them all…so don’t try that on me.

Alcohol is legal as well, yet that doesn’t make it legal to drive with it. Marijuana is far less detrimental to your motor skills than alcohol is. You may be a little bit clumsier at times, but your body goes into what is essentially auto-pilot when you’re high…if you’ve done something with regularity (such as driving), you will have no issue doing that thing after smoking. That said, it will be illegal to drive or operate machinery while under the influence of marijuana, just as it is with alcohol.
When I smoke, the only people that even notice are the veteran smokers. You really can’t even tell the difference. Weed makes everyone and everything more enjoyable, including the person that is smoking it.
Smoke it before you make a final decision on it.
EDIT: Whatever. It’s your loss.

Answer by In Science we trust
There isn’t one field that studies potential cures for diseases. There are several areas of study that could find a cure for a given disease. Molecular biology, cell biology, virology, oncology, immunology are among many fields where one could work on cures. These are specialized areas of biology and medicine.

Q&A: Are there people who can walk but are in a wheel chair 90% of the time?
Question by ?: Are there people who can walk but are in a wheel chair 90% of the time?
My next door neighbor is probably thirty something and lives alone. He’s in a wheel chair all the time. I think I only saw him once out of the wheel chair and it was in the elevator of the apartment building we live in. He was holding on to the railing and breathing really heavily. Are there diseases or disorders where your able to walk but you just stay in a wheel chair most of the time? He doesn’t work so I bet he’s on disability. I just wonder how serious his disability is. Anyone know of anything he could possibly have?
Best answer:
Answer by arch9angel
Yes, I have seen someone like that at this college I go to. He can walk short distances and stand okay, but needs the wheel chair to go any decent distance.

The following is a list of possible side-effects and complications to consider before having weight-loss surgery. We will discuss these in more detail at your office consultation.
1. Anastomotic leak (leak from a connection made to the bowel, usually requires re-operation and long hospital stay)
2. Anastomotic stricture (narrowing or obstruction at an intestinal connection resulting in vomiting)
3. Bowel obstruction/strangulation/internal hernia/ischemic bowel possibly needing removal (associated with pain and vomiting, usually requires re-operation)
4. Injury to an abdominal or pelvic organ/structure (especially the liver, spleen, pancreas, bile duct, stomach, esophagus, colon, bowel, diaphragm, urinary bladder, nerve or blood vessel)

It’s just amazing how thousands and thousands of people have actually survived this surgery and are now healthy and happy. How long would your list be if you listed all the things that morbid obesity causes in a person. It would be much longer and certainly more serious than those you listed. You get this surgery to save your life. It has done that for my husband who is doing just great with it. He hasn’t had a single problem yet other than getting adjusted to eating the right amount to not feel so full. He has lost 80 pounds and feels great. He is so much more active and actually takes long walks all the time. His energy level has skyrocketed. He started planting a garden yesterday and doesn’t need anyone to help him get down on the ground to do it which he hasn’t done in many years. He doesn’t get out of breath like before. His blood pressure has dropped enough to lower his medication for it. Obesity caused him to have both his knees replaced and it still bothered him. Now he no longer has any pain in his knees, and he walks with ease. Next week, we are going to start riding our bikes. I always have had to do it without him, but no more. He is going along with others family and friends. This surgery has done much more for him than anyone can imagine. I don’t know why you want to keep running it down, but it is a real lifesaver to many people. Yes, there are risks. But the real question is whether or not the risks of staying obese are greater than the surgery. Most doctors will agree that obesity is the bigger risk for anyone morbidly obese. My husband loves his new life without all that weight. He knew all the risks before he had it done. It was well worth taking those risks for his good health now.

How is it some people can smoke for 40 years and not develop anything serious like lung cancer or emphysema?

My husband’s grandfather lived to be 93 “chewing” (he would put this thing in his mouth & spit, not sure what it really is but I know it’s bad.) smoking, & drinking pepsi & beer every night. Whereas I know there are people that could just smoke cigarettes for a few years and die a horrible death. Why is this?

My father smoked in his early 20s, but he gave it up to become healthier. Then, at 48 he passed away from colon cancer. If you ask anyone that knew him they’d tell you what a wonderful man he was. There’s no explaining it. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people…it sucks, but hey that’s life, right?

Q&A: What are good reasons for young people not to smoke?
Question by Yes: What are good reasons for young people not to smoke?
Everyone knows the long-term health consequences of smoking, but those aren’t a concern of the younger people, who are all convinced that they won’t get any serious disease from cigarettes. None of them expect to be smoking in 20 years (though the majority of those who start smoking will continue to smoke for many years), so they don’t care about the long term consequences. So lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, etc are not a concern of theirs. Most young people don’t think that their first cigarette at 15 years old or a social smoking habit in college could lead to these diseases. They think more in the moment or about the immediate future. What are good reasons for not smoking that can reach young people?

Why are there so many ignorant people?
Question by Eco/Enviro Girl: Why are there so many ignorant people?
I need to know LOL There are so many ignorant people and in all honesty they are starting to get annoying…
Here is an example:
I know a woman who has a child – she did drugs, drank alcohol and partied when she was 15 – her boyfriend was in his early 20′s and they weren’t using any “protection” – she discovered she was pregnant 3 months into her pregnancy all the while doing drugs, smoking, getting drunk… So her poor child obviously has problems – he not only has one kidney, no teeth enamel, lung problems but a learning disability and speech issues…
She has never left the city she’s from, has never taken her child anywhere – won’t even allow him on school trips… She lives in a house with her grandparents and uncle who all smoke (despite her child having all his problems) last year the poor kid (he was 6) had a burn mark on his arm from running around his house when someone was smoking – apparently he ran into a cigarette someone was holding – and the uncle in the household is a drunk!
She sends me spam about health things like “cancer” causing dioxins in water bottles… LOL Somehow I think that’s the least of what she should be concerned about….
So tell me, I’m no genius, but I do have my head on tight…. What the hell is wrong with people like this? and what can I do to avoid having to hear these stories from these people…?
Ugh – HELP LOL
That’s the problem – I have great friends who are not from “around here” they’re educated, good hearted, amazing people – it’s just that the people in my neighborhood seem to be from the same iq pool – short of moving (I’m considering it) how can I keep them at bay LOL

Answer by DaNcE4LiFe
What makes people ignorant, is their lack of education. Whatever the subject is….. In the case that you have explained about that women obviously was not taught anything about sex ed, or pregnancy 101, etc. It;s unfortunate. I wish people were less ignorant. I cant tell you how to avoid hearing stories from people like this, because everybody has a little ignorance in them… even if they dont want to admit it. Just choose to be around more educated people!

Would Black people buy as many diamonds if they knew that it supports slavery?

Bling bling as a status symbol? Are the chains around your neck chains around someone elses? In Africa where some of the richest deposits of diamonds are found, poor Africans mine to make the wealthy diamond mine owners rich. Diamond cutters, brokers and dealers all benifit while poor miners work in poor conditions. Why can’t they share the wealth? Diamonds are also found near naturaling accuring asbestos.
For more info please check out this web page http://www.sparkle.plus.com/koffie.html
I have not seen blood diamond, although I probably will now that I have heard of it. I agree that white people buy more diamonds and I think it is terrible. I worded the question the way I did because I thought it would get more responses Than the first one I posted. I really wish people would read closely and not get as confused about the Irony. By the way white people buy so many diamonds beacause love, marrage, and divorce, are considered a large part of the gross domestic product (GDP) and that is a whole different oppresion conspiracy.
