Old derelict Otis lifts in Car Park – Inc shaft photos
I went to ####### today and parked in this car park. To my surprise, there ARE some old lifts still around (without the usual black buttons) but unfortunately it looks like I’ve arrived many years too late to check these out. These now appear disused, as there was a think layer of dust and dirt between the gap in the lift doors on every level. To my surprise, on one of the levels the lift doors were open slightly! I couldn’t believe it and took some photos of the old Otis lift shaft. The selector tape terminates on top of the lift car. Normally, this is a continuous loop, but how the heck can this work? The car must be feeding the selector tape INTO the motor room? See video as I’ve made a diagram to explain it, oh, and I’ve explained it in a voice over (I had to talk QUIETLY it’s late at night and Chay is asleep, so I sound a bit weird!) You know, for a second or two I thought that motor room door was unlocked – it opened about an inch before the lock ‘clunked’ against the frame!! Would have made my day to look at this old classic Otis motor room – these are so rare nowadays and facinating to look at. No processors, just relays and ALL mechanical stuff!

I was a little unsure if we could make it to Tom Price after Karijini NP so thought we had better fill up at the Auski Roadhouse at the Wittenoom turn off (Wittenoom is famous for the asbestos that was mined there). The brake light warning light stayed on for the first 20km’s or so this morning so thought I had better get some brake fluid anyway and check the levels. Was OK as the fuel price was reasonable and the brake fluid level was alright so must have just been the cooler overnight temperature playing havoc with the car (must have got down to 15 degrees at least — brrrr). As I finished filling up with fuel I could hear a noise and on investigation we had a tyre with a stone in it and it was deflating. At least they had someone at the roadhouse that fixed tyres so I jacked the car up and took the tyre off, as it was the spare that we had put on a few weeks ago I decided might as well put the good tyre back on and keep the spare as the spare. It was not actually that comfortable because there were five of us in there (including the driver) and the guy next to me was a little too big for his seat and was using some of mine. There was luckily another gringo in the cab so I wasn’t completely lost but the conversation was way too fast for me. The driver kept asking Matty (the other gringo) questions like How do the girls shag where you come from? are they tight? Stuff like that, and they were laughing at us a lot. It was good natured really but still made me uncomfortable in the non-physical way as well. The views along the way were quite incredible. My first glimpse of the Andes proper. Even the last little road into Potosi was impressive with the mountain the mines are in all lit up. (More of mines later) We arrived in Potosi quite late but I already knew where to go, a hostel called Koala den had been recommended to me because it had hot showers and heating in the room. The beach once again was fabulous (sandy and empty) and the sea was extremely clear. The restaurant also served really good food and the time spent on Libong felt like a ‘holiday. One day we decided to walk across the island to find the largest village – and the pier that the local water taxis use. On the way we walked through many rubber tree plantations (this is the main source of income for residents of Libong and indeed, most of Trang province). We tried to walk past the local rubber processing “factory” ( a corrugated iron roof on some wooden poles!) where they were processing the sap from the trees into latex. The workers seemed delighted to see us and insisted that we take a closer look – the gooey white sap was somehow made into big think squares and then put through a mangle to squash it into thinner sheets and then put out to dry, by which time it looked quite leathery (who knows where it will end up). The walk was a long and very hot one (15 kms in 34deg C). We never did find the village, having taken a wrong turn, but we did see some fabulous countryside …

This came as a bit of a surprise, but I think we improvised pretty well and the kids were perfectly behaved. To start off, the students sang a Shuar song about their town Tukupi, led by a brave little girl who got up in front of her classmates. We told them a little about the US and taught the kids a little dialogue in English. We then gave out some little gifts we had brought, rewarding the best students in math and grammar with a notebook each, the best artist with crayons, and our brave singer with moisturizer lotion. Then, we stopped by to watch the constuction of a traditional shuar home. Traditional homes are constructed with a timber frame, bamboo walls (although not all had walls), and a palm thatch roof. With proper maintenance these homes will last around 5 years. This means periodic repair or reconstruction, but consider that: a) there entire home is compostable. b) thatch is actually MUCH cooler than the metal roofs, and can be just as watertight. c) the traditional home uses more bamboo (quickly renewable) and less hardwood (slower to regenerate) than modern construction d) with the possible …

I have emailed him to have his bathers ready as we will go to the Blue Lagoon directly from the airport. We drive the scenic way, through a massive lava field, and up to a rocky black cliffs overlooking seagulls nesting on cliffs and rocks in the water, and take a few pictures, frightening ourselves by standing as close as we dare on the overhangs. Blue Lagoon is amazing – it’s a large commercially run place, but that doesn’t detract at all. The first pool we see is a weird milky blue, from a combination of algae and silica in the water. As the weather warms up it changes to green. We do the usual routine – shoes outside, strip off, shower, bathers on, then into the main pool complex. It’s a fantastic sight – hundreds of people in a large green pool, some with white clay on their face, and in the middle a rock cairn with scalding hot water bubbling and steam hissing out in great clouds. It’s beautiful getting in the water – it’s warm and soft on the skin. We go and plaster ourselves with white clay over our faces and upper bodies, and work our way over to the rock cairn. As you get closer you feel the water temperature rising until it becomes scalding hot about 2-3 metres out. Some …

Strike action at the power plant It’s amazing but this blog just writes itself sometimes. On the 17th of September we downed tools and walked out with serious safety concerns over the possible presence of asbestos onsite. I must explain that asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral in the area, particularly in the nearby mine pit that is being dug up. When they blast at the pit the dust cloud can easily reach the power plant. In its natural form asbestos is just as deadly as the processed stuff that we are familiar with in homes and buildings. The mining company was monitoring it at the power plant up until May ’09. They freely admitted that this was a mistake and that monitoring would now continue. They also claim that they haven’t been able to detect asbestos at the power plant which is 2km from the pit. As you can imagine the unions were all over this and the local media ran a few stories on it also. We asked for independent testing so that the site could be cleared to return to work. We spent five days out until we were happy that the assurances we were getting were genuine. Every day we dressed for work and waited for a phone call to …

But starting Tuesday night we have been staying at a studio apartment in Cape Town with a SWEET view of Table Mountain. We are within walking distance of everything so we don’t have to spend money on transportation which is great. Tuesday night after unpacking we sat out on the balcony and watched a TV commercial being made in the Company Gardens below. TV work is tedious it seems because they kept doing the same scene over and over. The apartment doesn’t have A/C but in Cape Town you don’t really need it — it’s hot during the day but at night it cools off and there is always a breeze. The planetarium is right down the street so on that first night we went to a night viewing which was very cool — the astronomer on duty showed us how to pick out different constellations in the sky. There is a great vibe to the city — very multi-cultural. Yesterday morning we walked around the Company Gardens taking pictures of adorable school kids. Then we headed to the Waterfront where we gorged ourselves on fish and chips while listening to various performing street artists. The main event of the day was hopping on a ferry to Robben …

Trying to get us to pay retarded prices to Patong. We ended up taking a shuttle bus, which only cost us 300 baht (about cad) all together, which was about half of what the cabbies wanted. **** them! It took about an hour to get to our hotel room, which was so nice. Especially after all the dumps we were staying in Australia. We got our first taste of living the high life for cheap. “Ping Pong show” In Patong Thailand. What’s the first thing to come to your mind? Probably not a table tennis match. Especially considering that Patong has about 1/3 of the people living here involved in jobs that have to do with sex. But everyone kept talking about it, so Linds and I decided we had to go and see the “Ping Pong show”. A local we met gave us a few names of places that offer this show. He said to head down around 11pm, that’s when the action begins. We had a few beers at our hotel, then headed down the street where the show took place, its pretty weird just walking down there. As it always is, you’re ready to go, start up and something goes wrong. The auxiliary battery isolator gave up the ghost. So annoying as it was already midday and we were now even more delayed. A new isolator cost 9 but was necessary as without it our camping gear would drain both the auxiliary and crank battery overnight. You dont want a flat battery at Wolf Creek! With a new isolator quickly fitted we tested everything and now the shower pump wouldn’t work. Months of working and testing and it’s all failing the day we choose to leave. Thankfully the pump was ok, it just needed a little more power, which it had when I started up the engine. It is still to this day intermittent and when the water out the shower dies the one of us not showering has to rush round and start the engine up. C’est la vie. We only got 250kms from Perth before it got dark and we needed to find a place to stay. Cervantes town which is the closest town to the Pinnacles had no camping signs everywhere. Only one option then. The great Australian outback. Found a dirt road close to the Pinnacles which looked like a service road to a water hole for some road making vehicles. It was well …

I left my family behind so that my husband could move closer to his daughter from a previous marriage, and his grandmother who was dying of lung cancer. Unfortunately his grandma died the day we got there. His sister had just had a baby girl a few days before, and a few weeks after I found out I was pregnant with our second child. I later found out I was having a girl. After having 3 boys (two from a previous marriage) I was over the moon. At first I thought that having another baby would put an even bigger strain on our already strained finances and I had expressed my worries with my sister-in-law who had just had a baby. She assured me they would throw me a baby shower and that she would give me some clothing and things that her baby grew out of. Which was great especially since I had given her just about all of the baby gear I had from my last baby because I wasn’t expecting to get pregnant. After all my husbands family started to find out I was pregnant they too said they would get together with her and plan me a baby shower. I did once modestly say they didn’t have to, but they said they wouldn’t hear of not giving me one. So, I was expecting it. Over the next few months I babysat my sister-in-laws baby and got really close with the baby and was looking forward to when her and my baby girl would grow up together and be close friends. In the meantime time was getting closer for me to have my first baby girl and I was excited, couldn’t wait for my baby shower. My husbands family didn’t visit or call that much and I didn’t give it that much thought, but I had begun to get very lonely considering my family was miles away and I didn’t get to see or talk to them much. Then in the last few weeks of my pregnancy I noticed that my husband wasn’t acting himself, and he started to seem distant and preoccupied. That didn’t sit well with my pregnancy hormones at all! I finally figured out what was bothering him and I became really hurt. A few months back two of his ex-girlfriends whom he had hooked up with on and off over the years since he was a teen had found out he was living back in town and had a pregnant wife, started visiting his mom and sister and claiming they wanted DNA tests for their children whom they had always claimed was their husbands. He didn’t know what to do. Of course being in my last month of pregnancy I didn’t want to have to deal with it and thought it could wait. His mom of course couldn’t think of anything else. One of the girls had been his sister’s friend and the other girl had been his cousins wife. They were both considered as ‘part of the family’ even though they didn’t have any ties to the family anymore. One of them had a daughter that went to school with two older sons and she said the most vulgar things to my sons about the situation and wouldn’t leave them alone about it. The other seemed not to be worried about it and from what I heard she didn’t even bring it up my husband’s mom did. My husband assured me he would ignore the requests for an informal DNA tests for mine and the baby’s sake buy the whole situation had already done it’s damage… my baby went into distress… I had just figured the ex’s wanted to cause problems and that honestly they knew none of their children were my husbands. If it was real I would have figured they would have gotten a court order for one so they could collect child support. Anyway about 8 months later one of them sent my husband nude photos of herself and a friend of hers his mother and sister took up for her saying ‘she always does stupid things like that’ they say she is happily married and just did that one time when she was mad at her husband. They have chosen to keep their distance from them and even though they know I don’t want to be around her they invite her to family parties. They know my husband, me, and our kids wont come to the parties if she comes, but they don’t care. They think I should forget about it and that I shouldn’t feel uncomfortable around her. I’m hurt by the whole thing. She doesn’t have anything on me, I work hard on my figure and my looks, and she has pretty much let herself go. I just don’t want to be at a party when I know I will be ignored and I will have to see her and my husbands family laughing it up. Just seems pointless when I think his family should be getting to know me and spending time with their grandchildren of which they never visit and I’m not going to visit them when they always seem to have that girl over. Am I wrong to not attend the parties?

Yes you are wrong. Just get over the whole thing and act like a bigger person. You put this family in a difficult position, with them having to choose between important people in their lives. Although these two women are not tied formally to the family, there is a long history there and its hard to break that. All that should matter to you is that your husband and you have a good relationship and those other women shouldn’t matter. Since you obviously, by your post, feel that you’re SO much better than them, what is your problem? Allow your children to see their grandparents (you need to put forth effort so they see each other; its not solely the responsibility of the grandparents to make time to see their grandchildren) and continue to build a relationship with them.

On the way, we stopped off in Wittenoom, a town where they used to mine asbestos. In the 60s, due to a lot of people dying from diseases associated with this, the government closed the town and have since tried to wipe it off the map totally. It’s a bit sad really because some people still live there but there are derelict buildings and empty plots everywhere and kangaroos roaming freely as if there isn’t a town at all. It’s also in a very beautiful setting in the Hamersley Ranges so it’s a shame it had to be closed totally. The dictionary definition of a ‘ghost town’. The drive into Karijini was by far the most interesting so far as there was changing scenery, mountains (big hills anyway) and a not completely straight road. We arrived at the visitors centre to find that only half of the park would be accessible to us, as the track to the rest was in very bad condition. Not wanting to put Horace through that again, and not really being able to justify the price of a tour, we settled on just seeing this one half; the Dale’s Gorge area. The campsite was pretty basic with only a pit toilet (yet another night without a shower …
