How do I convince my dad to get a physical health examination?
Question by Melinda: How do I convince my dad to get a physical health examination?
My dad hasn’t had a health examination in the past 5 years. Whenever someone tells him to get one he always comes up with some excuse like,”I don’t have time” or “It costs too much money” or “I don’t have any problems, I’m perfectly fine” or “You might get sicker than you are now when you go to the hospital” and other things like that. He even made excuses when my grandma told him to get a health examination! The thing is, he’s almost 50 years old, he smokes more than 3 cigarettes a day and I think he’s been smoking for about 20 years now. He also doesn’t get much exercise. I’m really worried that he might get lung cancer or something and he won’t even do anything right now to prevent that from happening. What do I do???

Q&A: How do environmental, physical and mental factors affect a student’s ability to function well during a test?
Question by mikejonesmjmikejones: How do environmental, physical and mental factors affect a student’s ability to function well during a test?
Just looking for opinions. Please let me know what you think.
Best answer:
Answer by yo bro
In my opinion, those factors affect a student’s ability to function well during a test, because first of all.. it depends on their age and maturity.. as well as their past experiences and thoughts. Some students can cope with things that go around them, but many students can not concentrate on a test, because of the difficulties and mental distress they are having with their lives.. this is a very common problem in high school, and from there can lead you to the fact that many students do poorly on a test, while having those factors in a negative way..
Hope I said what you were looking for..
God Bless!

Physical Therapy Information – The Benefits of Physiotherapy and the Facts About Chronic Airways Disease
Physical Therapy Information – The Benefits of Physiotherapy and the Facts About Chronic Airways Disease
Article by Dr Alex B. Miguel
Chronic Airways Disease is not a single disease but a collective term for a group of similar afflictions. This group of diseases is also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This condition can affect a person’s life a severe way, but physiotherapy is a good wat to combat these ill effects.
Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are members of this notorious group of diseases. Other conditions that affect a person’s breathing pattern are also part of this group. Smoking is a contributing factor to the development of this condition in a person, but even non-smokers may be affected because of the presence of irritants in the air. Age is also a factor, as these diseases are most common among older people.
The evident symptoms of this disease include wheezing and frequent coughs, besides the prevalent shortness of breath. There is a generous discharge of sputum, which often has traces of blood. Lack of oxygen in the body causes a bluish tinge to appear on the person’s extremities, and the same lack may also lease cardiac issues.
Physiotherapy can help alleviate the complications arising from chronic airways disease. The way a person breathes, if corrected, can reduce the issues arising from this disease. A physiotherapist can train a person to breathe differently, enabling him to inhale enough oxygen required by the body but without being reduced to wheezing and coughing to meet the lung’s demands. This is nothing short of a boon for a chronic airways disease patient.
A method known as clapping and postural drainage is also beneficial to a patient suffering from chronic airways disease. Physiotherapists ensure postural drainage in this simple method by ensuring that the damaged lung is positioned above the trachea by this simple method.
It is possible to carry out this procedure at home. The person must lie supine on a bed. He must bend his upper body such that the top part of the body is over the bed. A physiotherapist can teach a patient this method so that drainage of the affected lung takes places without any problems. It does not take very long to learn this method and soon a patient is able to do it without assistance.
The second part of the procedure, known as clapping is also known as chest percussion. The patient’s back is clapped with a cupped to induce secretions within the chest to loosen. This however cannot be carried out without assistance and the physiotherapist teaches it to a person taking care of the patient.
Weakened legs can also arise from chronic airways disease. Continues shortness of breath prompts patients suffering from the disease to refrain from walking or other physical exercise that is necessary to keep the legs fit. Physiotherapy can address this issue by making the patient walk the treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike. This treatment though, is possible only if the patient is able to do the exercises at all.
As with legs, exercising the arms of a patient is equally necessary. Everyday activities involve the use of arms more than any other part of the body. Physical therapy can strengthen the patient’s arms and also induce easier breathing.
A therapist well versed in the knowledge of the disease must carry out physiotherapy treatment of patients suffering from chronic airways diseases. As newer treatments are discovered and perfected, older methods must be left behind in favor of the newer ones. The treatment itself benefits the patient, and physiotherapy staff who can carry out the treatments correctly can significantly improve the condition of a chronic airways disease patient.

5 Common Types of Physical Therapy for Comprehensive Medical Information
5 Common Types of Physical Therapy for Comprehensive Medical Information
Article by Patricia Strasser
The most common types of physical therapy available in medicine today are: Orthopedic, Geriatric, Neurological, Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Pediatric.
Vast knowledge of medical terms and information will help to guide you in understanding the aspects of health and medicine. Physical therapy is a broad medical practice that focuses on the rehabilitation of a person’s motor skills. It has a wide study of specialties that focus on a specific medical component within its medical range. To learn more about the different types of the most common physical therapy specialties, and to better understand each one and how you can take advantage of them, read the following information:
Orthopedic
Orthopedic physical therapy focuses more on the joints, muscle pains, arthritis, and other similar aspects. Orthopedics are responsible for rehabilitating and fixing injuries acquired in sports activities damaging the skeletal system. They commonly use hot or cold packs to initially ease the pain and help you recover quickly. Orthopedic therapy specializes in work with muscles, bones or any ligaments that have been damaged.
Geriatric
Geriatric physical therapy focuses more on the the aging population. This type of physical therapy specializes in working with people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, osteoporosis and other types of conditions that are mostly developed in the person’s senior years. Doctors with a Geriatric interest focus on programs aimed at restoring the senior person’s mobility that deteriorated due to related illnesses. They are also responsible for the improvement of the person’s overall fitness. Geriatric therapists will facilitate programs for the patient to improve his or her mobility and quality of life.
Neurological
Neurological physical therapists focus more on neurological dysfunctions. Neurological dysfunctions include Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, and other neurologically related diseases. The therapies are prepared to focus on programs that will repair and improve the patient’s areas of neurological impairment. Neurological physical therapy is a long term physical therapy program designed to for the patient who needs progressive recovery options. Neurological dysfunctions are difficult to fix and need longer periods of extensive neurological physical therapy if recovery is to be achieved.
Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation focuses on patients suffering from cardiopulmonary disorders. It is a rehabilitation therapy that will help the patient to regain motor independence and increase endurance. Cardiopulmonary illness and other types of lung dysfunctions are treated with cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation. The patients are assisted with respiratory exercises and in clearing their lungs.
Pediatric
Pediatric physical therapy focuses on patients that are infants and young children. This therapy assists children who have had an early detection of mobility related health problems. Babies who are suffering from motor disorders at such a young age are taught to keep their balance. They are also guided with programs and exercises that will improve their motor skills so that they can eventually have normal mobility. Most of the kids treated with pediatric physical therapy have neuromuscular and skeletal acquired disorders.
This medical information about the various physical therapies will surely provide you the correct perspective in situations where a physical therapy is needed. It will also answer the most misleading questions about physical therapy.

People Can Seek Alternative Treatments for Health Problems at Physical Therapy Centers
People Can Seek Alternative Treatments for Health Problems at Physical Therapy Centers
Article by Lee Andersons
As more people seek alternatives to long-term drug treatments prescribed by physicians, physical therapy centers are becoming a popular choice for pain management. Many people picture someone relearning to walk or lifting weights to help build up weakened muscles from an injury or accident. Historically, physical therapy dealt mainly with the musculoskeletal system caused by birth defects, injury, or old age. But modern physical therapy deals with a wide array of health areas, with many physical therapy centers offering specialties in cardiopulmonary health, women’s health, and pediatric health.
What Is Physical Therapy Alternative Treatment?
Cancer patients, women struggling with postpartum or prenatal health issues, people with painful skin disorders, and anyone dealing with vestibular problems can seek treatment from a physical therapist. Progressive oncology therapy often uses forms of physical therapy to help patients maintain strength during traditional cancer treatments. Exercises that help with balance and coordination, something greatly affected by intense cancer treatments, can help patients regain normal mobility quicker than if no preventative measures are taken.
Pregnancy takes a toll on a woman’s reproductive system, often leaving her with weakened pelvic muscles that can lead to incontinence and painful sexual intercourse. Traditional physicians may recommend surgery, but a physical therapist will perform an exam and create an exercises program that helps strengthen the pelvic muscles. Physical therapy can also help pregnant women realign the joints so that the last trimester is more comfortable. Breast surgery recovery is another women’s therapy, which helps women who have had mastectomies regain mobility.
Vestibular disorders affect balance and coordination. The inner ear is responsible for much of a person’s balance, and when the vestibular system is sending mixed messages to the brain, a person experiences dizziness and a loss of balance and coordination. Physical therapists have training in maneuvers and exercises that help realign the vestibular system so that it’s working normally again. Patients can also receive education about how to perform the maneuvers and exercises at home.
How to Choose a Physical Therapist
Once a physical therapist graduates from an accredited school, they can choose to work at a hospital, in a nursing home, or choose among a variety of physical therapy centers. Physical therapy programs from North Port to southern California traditionally offer similar educational programs, and all therapists must become licensed in the state they work. Physical therapists who wish to focus on one area of therapy usually take advanced education classes and become certified in the specialty area. It’s important that a person needing therapy for women’s health, dizziness issues, or skin conditions work with a therapist who has received training in that specific area.
When choosing a therapist, it’s important that a patient feels comfortable discussing health issues with the therapist. It’s also important that the patient feel comfortable with the therapist’s assistant, who may handle a large part of the therapy under the supervision of the licensed therapist. Other considerations include whether or not the practice accepts the patients insurance, if the therapist is willing to work in conjunction with a patient’s physician, and the goals set forth by the therapist for health improvement and preventative health measures.
While alternative treatments aren’t for everyone, physical therapy centers offer people the option of trying non-invasive, drug-free medical care. With the education provided and the managed care given by the therapist, many people find that physical therapy is a great alternative to medication for long-term pain management.

Physical therapy
Article by hi joiney
HistoryPhysicians like Hippocrates and later Galenus are believed to have been the first practitioners of physical therapy, advocating massage, manual therapy techniques and hydrotherapy to treat people in 460 B.C.[verification needed] After the development of orthopedics in the eighteenth century, machines like the Gymnasticon were developed to treat gout and similar diseases by systematic exercise of the joints, similar to later developments in physical therapy. The earliest documented origins of actual physical therapy as a professional group date back to Per Henrik Ling ather of Swedish Gymnastics who founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics (RCIG) in 1813 for massage, manipulation, and exercise. The Swedish word for physical therapist is jukgymnast = ick-gymnast. In 1887, PTs were given official registration by Sweden National Board of Health and Welfare.Other countries soon followed. In 1894 four nurses in Great Britain formed the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. The School of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago in New Zealand in 1913, and the United States’ 1914 Reed College in Portland, Oregon, which graduated “reconstruction aides.”Research catalyzed the physical therapy movement. The first physical therapy research was published in the United States in March 1921 in The PT Review. In the same year, Mary McMillan organized the Physical Therapy Association (now called the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). In 1924, the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation promoted the field by touting physical therapy as a treatment for polio.Treatment through the 1940s primarily consisted of exercise, massage, and traction. Manipulative procedures to the spine and extremity joints began to be practiced, especially in the British Commonwealth countries, in the early 1950s. Later that decade, physical therapists started to move beyond hospital based practice, to outpatient orthopedic clinics, public schools, college/universities, geriatric settings (skilled nursing facilities), rehabilitation centers, hospitals, and medical centers.Specialization for physical therapy in the U.S. occurred in 1974, with the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA being formed for those physical therapists specializing in orthopaedics. In the same year, the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy was formed, which has played an important role in advancing manual therapy worldwide ever since. EducationMain article: List of physical therapy trainingWorld Confederation of Physical Therapy (WCPT) recognises there is considerable diversity in the social, economic, cultural, and political environments in which physical therapist education is conducted throughout the world. WCPT recommends physical therapist entry-level educational programs be based on university or university-level studies, of a minimum of four years, independently validated and accredited as being at a standard that accords graduates full statutory and professional recognition. WCPT acknowledges there is innovation and variation in program delivery and in entry-level qualifications, including first university degrees (Bachelors/Baccalaureate/Licensed or equivalent), Masters and Doctorate entry qualifications. What is expected is that any program should deliver a curriculum that will enable physical therapists to attain the knowledge, skills, and attributes described in these guidelines.Professional education prepares physical therapists to be autonomous practitioners in collaboration with other members of the health care team.Physical therapist entry-level educational programs integrate theory, evidence and practice along a continuum of learning. This begins with admission to an accredited physical therapy program and ending with retirement from active practice.202 of 211 accredited physical therapy programs in the US are accredited at the doctoral level. Specialty areasBecause the body of knowledge of physical therapy is quite large, some PTs specialize in a specific clinical area. While there are many different types of physical therapy, the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties list seven specialist certifications, including Sports Physical Therapy and Clinical Electrophysiology. Worldwide the six most common specialty areas in physical therapy are: CardiopulmonaryCardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation physical therapists treat a wide variety of individuals with cardiopulmonary disorders or those who have had cardiac or pulmonary surgery. Primary goals of this specialty include increasing endurance and functional independence. Manual therapy is used in this field to assist in clearing lung secretions experienced with cystic fibrosis. Disorders, including heart attacks, post coronary bypass surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pulmonary fibrosis, treatments can benefit[citation needed] from cardiovascular and pulmonary specialized physical therapists.[verification needed] GeriatricGeriatric physical therapy covers a wide area of issues concerning people as they go through normal adult aging but is usually focused on the older adult. There are many conditions that affect many people as they grow older and include but are not limited to the following: arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, hip and joint replacement, balance disorders, incontinence, etc.Geriatric physical therapy helps[citation needed] those affected by such problems in developing a specialized program to help restore mobility, reduce pain, and increase fitness levels.[verification needed] NeurologicalNeurological physical therapy is a discipline focused on working with individuals who have a neurological disorder or disease. These include Alzheimer’s disease, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), ALS, brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and stroke. Common impairments associated with neurologic conditions include impairments of vision, balance, ambulation, activities of daily living, movement, speech and loss of functional independence. OrthopaedicOrthopaedic physical therapists diagnose, manage, and treat disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system including rehabilitation after orthopaedic surgery. This specialty of physical therapy is most often found in the out-patient clinical setting. Orthopaedic therapists are trained in the treatment of post-operative orthopaedic procedures, fractures, acute sports injuries, arthritis, sprains, strains, back and neck pain, spinal conditions and amputations.Joint and spine mobilization/manipulation, therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular reeducation, hot/cold packs, and electrical muscle stimulation (e.g., cryotherapy, iontophoresis, electrotherapy) are modalities often used to expedite recovery in the orthopaedic setting.[verification needed] Additionally, an emerging adjunct to diagnosis and treatment is the use of sonography for diagnosis and to guide treatments such as muscle retraining. Solitary Pulmonary Nodule Overview
A solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) is a single abnormality in the lung that is smaller than 3 cm in diameter. Generally, a pulmonary nodule must grow to at least 1 cm in diameter before it can be seen on a chest x-ray film.
An SPN is surrounded by normal lung tissue and is not associated with any other abnormality in the lung or nearby lymph nodes (small, bean-shaped structures found throughout the body).
Persons with SPNs usually do not experience symptoms. SPNs are usually noticed by chance on a chest x-ray film that has been taken for another reason (referred to as an incidental finding). SPNs are one of the most common abnormalities seen on chest x-ray films. Approximately 150,000 cases are detected every year as incidental findings, either on x-ray films or CT scans.
Most SPNs are benign (noncancerous); however, they may represent an early stage of primary lung cancer or may indicate that cancer is metastasizing (spreading) from another part of the body to the affected lung.
Determining whether the SPN seen on the chest x-ray film or chest CT scan is benign or malignant (cancerous) is important. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of early lung cancer that presents as SPN may be the only chance to cure the cancer.

Asbestos workers have a high risk of mesothelioma. It has been proven by researchers. Mesothelioma of the pleural is a rare pleural disease. It is very easy to be overlooked. However, it is difficult to diagnose pleural mesothelioma in its early stages because its symptoms often mimic the symptoms of other common illnesses, such as the flu, pneumonia or laryngitis. Mesothelioma symptoms are similar to lung cancer, Because of these similarities, as well as the relative rarity of mesothelioma in the general population, the disease is not always diagnosed and often grows untreated for many months. Mesothelioma is a rare disorder, affecting about three thousand people per year, while lung cancer has a diagnostic rate 65 times greater than mesothelioma with nearly 200, 000 yearly diagnoses. Many patients were misdiagnosed as asbestos cancer. Asbestos has been banned in Europe. Because many people suffer mesothelioma due to lax laws regarding control of asbestos in the mid-twentieth century, a body of law has grown up around this illness. Workers exposed to asbestos receive regular physical examinations. The employer must provide the necessary protective equipment for asbestos workers to prevent asbestos cancer.
