A few months back, a leak in the ceiling allowed water to pool atop a ceiling tile and cause it to collapse in the center. The debri was swept or mopped up, I don’t know (but the floor has since been mopped) — however, the tile, still broken, is just hanging there from the ceiling, and has been for all this time. Now, from what I’ve heard, the general rule of thumb is that any ceiling tiles pre-80s is liable to contain asbestos, while 80s and onward are generally regarded as being safe. I have no idea how old this ceiling tile is, nor how old the rest of the offices are for that matter. The warehouse is certainly old, yes, but the office space which this is part of was built later on. Perhaps these visual aids can allow someone with an astute eye to determine the relative age of the offices, and/or be able to state whether there is indeed a reason to be concerned about asbestos exposure or not from this. In my understanding, asbestos was used only in the more hard, acoustic ceiling tiles, but I’m not an expert.
This is a workplace, by the way, so we’re breathing this air regularly.

No, it’s not.
-they didn’t start using grid ceilings until the late, late 80′s and that isn’t even remotely asbestos laced. I thought maybe by your post you were dealing with the perforated stick on tiles that affix to the ceiling.(they are 10″ X 10″)
The tile you have can’t be older than ’89. Go to Home Depot and pick up a new one, 5 bucks.

I made this video for a presentation i did at a middle school fundraiser for Children’s Hospital, I was there guest speaker, and since I made this video I might as well put it up. 3 1/2 years of fighting in under 5 minutes so there is many people, groups, organizations, special events and camps that i could not fit in but to everyone who helped me through this fight i do thank you and am blessed to have known you in my life. sorry i can’t personally explain these photos to you but some of the stuff is me in the Mar Vista Middle School Band (!!GO VIKINGS!!) Advanced/Jazz/and Marching Band surgery and CT scans (cat scans) Celebration Of Champions 1st and 3rd year (can’t find 2nd year pics) and guest at Padres game in Petco Park Teen group Some Of My Best Friends Are Bald (SOMBFAB) at Disneyland 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year at Friends Of Scott Prom. (Friends Of Scott is an awesome organization with the hospital they do a lot for the teens of the hospital) I was diagnosed March,15,2006 with Rhabdomyosarcoma My type of cancer had only 4 stages and sure enough i was on stage four, they were doing everything they could but they can never guarantee your life, there was a chance 6 months and I would be gone, but after 13 surgery’s, 2 relapses, radiation treatments on my lung and abdomen, chemo, and 3 1/2 years of fighting and I’m still here. Only GOD can do something that great and I’m living proof of that.

Hi everyone,
My fiance and I just tore up the sponge carpet in the kitchen of our new house. (Yeah, gross.) Underneath, we found two layers of underlayment materials I’m having some difficulty identifying.
The first layer is a thin grey sheet with some specks of colors on it. It’s fairly thin and it cracks pretty easily when I pry it off the floor. It looks too thin to be cement board.
Underneath that is a black sheet that I can peel and rip off in segments. It can be bent without breaking, but again, I can rip it. It appears to have had adhesive applied to it. I’ve read some literature on flooring and I think it’s an isolation membrane but I’m really not sure.
Underneath all that is plywood.

Is it just fiber/cement board and isolation membrane? Or could I be dealing with asbestos?

You seem to be talking about a commercial building. Laws enacted around 1980 said asbestos had to be removed from public buildings. Many buildings underwent renovation at this time to make the changes. Probably some did not. If asbestos is no moved it is safer than if it s broken up. It is breathing the fibers that causes the asbestosis and other lung diseases.

Not true, greeneye. Asbestos must be made airborne in order to pose a risk (it’s only a hazard when it’s inhaled). For this reason, intact objects containing asbestos are safe so long as they are not disturbed. The danger is when such objects are broken, and the asbestos becomes friable and is released into the air.
We don’t have the money to put towards any kind of asbestos inspection/removal services. What will probably happen is the tile’s going to end up just getting ripped down, and the debri nonchalantly swept into the garbage. Pretend the tile does contain asbestos, and we dispose of it that way… would it even release enough asbestos to constitute a genuine health threat? Some people say it takes a lifetime of asbestos exposure to cause mesothelioma, others say it only takes a few exposures….

ok if there is asbestos in the ceiling tiles exposure can occurr without them being broken them being present at all can cause exposure

a while back i took in a stray from the streets who was pregnant. these are her puppies, but not her. she died from cancer in the lung and we had a rottie from a friend who’s litter did not make it take over her pups. but she was needed back home so we “borrowed” this lovely gsd from a shelter
what other breeds do you see here? remember the mom is a gsd believed to be purebred, but who knows.

Pictures will do you no good (I did enclose). Asbestos ceiling tiles in a picture look just like non-asbestos ceiling tiles. They can be 1×1 stuck on, they can be 4×6 drop down ceiling tiles, or any other kind. The ONLY way to tell is to take some tile to a lab. As an inspector, even if in my hands, I would not be able to tell. They have to be tested under a microscope with a specific procedure. If the tile is stuck to the ceiling, you also need some of the glue. Look in the yellow pages for a local lab. You can take them the sample or for more money, they can come take it. If in a home, there is little chance it is asbestos. Asbestos ceiling tiles were mainly used in commercial buildings and it is rare to find them even there.

Ok here’s a brief overview. For my 16th birthday my dad bought me an ’88 Saab Convertible 900S Turbo. But the thing is, I couldn’t own the car until I got my license. So the car stayed in my Dad’s name, and he ended up passing away from cancer. So until I got my license my car had to sit down his house. Well just recently I got my license and told the guy that had fixed my car before to make sure it was all good and it would pass inspection and run. Well when he did this he connected my fan wire to my battery. And this held a bunch of other power to it. So my car broke down yesterday. I had to get jumped 5 times just to make it home. Once I got home my mom’s husband pulled the fan wire out and he put it over near another wire that should not have been hot, and it sparked. So we looked around and found all these wires undone and household electrical items installed. So here are some pics.
