Q&A: Popcorn Lung? Sounds fake, but real disease.?
Question by : Popcorn Lung? Sounds fake, but real disease.?
I read a news article and then found this listed on wikipedia corresponding to it….I know wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but see the sources for the page.
Heres a small excert – n rare instances, bronchiolitis obliterans may be caused by inhalation of airborne diacetyl, a chemical used to produce the butter-like flavoring[7] in many foods such as candy, microwave popcorn and wines. This first came to public attention when eight former employees of the Gilster-Mary Lee popcorn plant in Jasper, Missouri, developed bronchiolitis obliterans. In 2000, the Missouri Department of Health called in NIOSH to make a determination of the cause, and to recommend safety measures. After surveying the plant and each patient’s medical history, NIOSH recommended respiratory protection for all workers in microwave popcorn production. Due to this event, bronchiolitis obliterans began to be referred to in the popular media as “Popcorn Lung” or “Popcorn Workers Lung”.[4][8][9]
One heavy consumer of microwaved popcorn has been diagnosed with this disease, which is the first known case involving a consumer.[13]

The problem is that the guy that they are referring to is a HEAVY user of this. Meaning that he ate it EVERY day SEVERAL times a day. I remember this from the news articles and the doctors that came and spoke on the news. The man that got ‘popcorn’ lung loved the SMELL of the popcorn, loved the taste and what not. So he was breathing in all that steam/particles every time he made popcorn.
By rational explanation it is a sure fire way to get cancer to inhale particles into your lungs. Why you do think there was ‘black lung’ disease for coal miners? because they were inhaling coal dust everywhere they went in the mine. Popcorn lung is the equivalent of that.
The only way you can get this kind of cancer is to be eating these things EVERY day at basically every meal. And not just eating them, but smelling them while they are cooking and after they are cooking. Plus, do you know how LONG it would take for those particles to build up and cause cancer? The man that got popcorn lung had been inhaling popcorn steam for DECADES. So I hardly think that is a threat to our lives.

Question by mbjag387: can I hang new dry wall over popcorn ceiling?
I am in the process of buying a house. It currently has that annoying popcorn. I get that it makes the few imperfections in the ceiling less noticeable but to me it looks horrible. Now the attic has like a foot thick blown insulation so I dont want to remove existing ceiling so I guess my question is do I need to scrape all this crapcorn off or can I simply put the new stuff right over it. Thank you ahead for any help anyone has for me.

Question by ribbontree: Popcorn ceilings!!! What do I do to the ceiling after removing the popcorn / cottage cheese texture???
The newest thing in remodeling is removing the popcorn ceilings. But, the remodeling shows on tv do not say what to do to the ceilings once you have removed the popcorn. Is it supposed to be left flat, textured in some way?? Which way is the best??

After we removed ours from the bathroom (which took forever and got in my eyes!), we painted it. It was flat and actually turned out looking very well done. It only took two coats of white paint to make it look like it had always been flat.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the “painted” rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a dark neutral like “otter” in a flat sheen would look great + it should coordinate with whatever colors you already have in your room.

Q&A: Finding studs in a popcorn ceiling?
Question by : Finding studs in a popcorn ceiling?
I would like to move my chandelier over, but I need to make sure it’s secured in the wooden beams above. I called our apartment complex and they are not sure which way the beams run. I do have a stud finder, but I’m not sure if it will work once it’s horizontal on the ceiling, and even if it does, we can’t run it along popcorn ceilings like we could if they were flat.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Best answer:
Answer by Mark
look for any nail pops out up on the ceiling and that will tell u where a stud …where the light is now may be a ceiling joist….most house framing the studs and joist are every 16 inches on center…so get a tape measure and a hammer and nail…after u find where a joist might be, then measure where u want the light to be and use the nail to poke through the ceiling and see if u hit a ceiling joist

We didnt use masks or ANY protection!! We had No idea about asbestos!! I also had other children in the house when we were doing this… are we poisened with asbestos!!!!
Best answer:
Answer by raina_vissora
1) Asbestos does not “poison” you. It leaves particulate matter in you lungs that can eventually cause lung cancer.
2) Asbestos is used as insulation above the ceiling (and between walls), not as part of the ceiling itself. Unless you put a big hole in the ceiling, you’re fine.
3) Wear a mask any time you’re sending any kind of dust flying everywhere… it’s not healthy to inhale that, either.

How do I touch up popcorn ceiling?
Question by Suz: How do I touch up popcorn ceiling?
My boyfriend has redone the half bath downstairs. To put up the crown molding, he had to sand down some of the popcorn on the ceiling. He sanded out a little too far…how can he touch up the ceiling so that it isn’t such a big contrast to the popcorn right beside it?

Popcorn ceiling being the rough textured ceiling that always drops pieces if you accidentally hit it? (Such was the case with crickets when we came back to our home after the summer and had to remove them from the walls and ceiling when they crawled up there). I would recommend sanding down the ceiling and getting rid of it, it makes the air quality better, it is less of a hassle and if something happens such as a roofing tile change or an earthquake or some sort of disturbance, the stuff wont fall all over the place.

Can I put sheetrock over a popcorn ceiling?
Question by Shake: Can I put sheetrock over a popcorn ceiling?
My house was built in 1985 so I know that there is no asbestos in the ceiling, however I do not want to deal with the mess of removing the popcorn, especially since the sheetrock and tape underneath will most likely need repair afterwards. I want to install 1/4 inch sheetrock over the existing popcorn ceiling. Would this be an okay method to get rid of the popcorn and how can I ensure that the new sheetrock goes on level?
Best answer:
Answer by poppajoe49
No, 1/4″ sheetrock isn’t sturdy enough to use on a ceiling. Most times I use 5/8″ but never less than 1/2″, because thinner stuff will sag after a while and look like cr#p!
You are better off removing the popcorn and repairing whatever needs it.

Q&A: How to finish a popcorn ceiling?
Question by asere: How to finish a popcorn ceiling?
I repaired my ceiling with compound because it had a long crack. I sanded down the compound as best i could and then added the popcorn texture with a spray can (HUMAX brand) but it looks like crap because the popcorn texture is uneven its either too little or too bulky and you can also see the line were the compound was placed underneath it. Do I need to add primer to the repair before I add the popcorn in order to not make the repair line invisible?
Best answer:
Answer by SmartAZ
You probably will have to hire someone and he probably will have to redo the entire ceiling. You might consider scraping it all off and doing a simple paint job, since popcorn has no special benefit other than the appearance.
