Q&A: laryngeal cancer questions?
Question by Fred D: laryngeal cancer questions?
my grandfather has had this form of cancer for about 2 years now, its made him very weak and malnourished.
his cancer seems metastasizing in a adjacent way so far instead of jumping to organs
his recent mri or cat scans shows the cancer is growing adjacently. it has grown down right near his heart, wrapped around his jugulars, adjacent with his spine. he has lesions on his kidney and lung
my questions are could the cancer eventually make it to and invade his heart, spine or jugular veins?
and could the lesions be the start of new tumors?
how do most laryngeal cancer patients die? his chemo/radiation have been unsuccessfull in stopping the cancer, all he can do is get the weakest chemo and take pain killers
he’s scared to sleep because he thinks he wont wake up, so sleep deprivation could play a role

Answer by Denisedds
Yes, it is possible for the cancer to invade his heart, spine or jugular veins, but the heart rarely gets cancer of any type. These cancers do not often metastasize to distant sites. It is typical for them to spread by direct extension and to the regional nodes. However, if the lesions in his kidneys and lungs are new findings they are likely mets. The radiology reports will state what they are. Most people with any cancer die from heart failure. I am very sorry. I know this is a difficult cancer to die from. These patients often have a difficult time communicating, at a time they really need to, and have fears of chocking. Someone who was once very dear to me died from this cancer about a year ago.

My grandma just died of cancer.. I was wondering if anyone could answer any questions?
Question by Callum Jay 10/06/09!<3: My grandma just died of cancer.. I was wondering if anyone could answer any questions?
Because it all happened so fast I didn’t get a chance to ask the staff and my family won’t talk about it.
She got diagnosed with lung cancer 9 days ago, then 4 days ago we were told there was nothing they could do, it had spread. She died 2 days ago… But I can’t get my head round how it can happen that quickly.. I know obviously she’d had cancer alot longer than 9 days..
I’m just confused what killed her? Because I’ve seen people with cancer before, who are terminal and I’ve seen them lose weight and deteriorate and pass.. But my grandma was fine in herself, she looked a bit ill – maybe just like she had a cold or something! But she was okay. And all of a sudden.. It kills her.
We got a call at 7am, saying she was struggling to breathe and she was on oxygen. When we got there she was alive, her eyes were wide open and she wasn’t moving her eyes or blinking, but she was breathing.
She tried saying a few words, like muttering. Does this sound like she was concious? Or was she like sleep talking?
I know you can’t tell me, but in your opinion..
Also, she kept moving her arms, like she was in pain.. Do you think she was doing it conciously? Or it was a reflex?
I can’t get my head around it. These questions just keep going over and over in my mind, and I hate it! It doesn’t matter whether she was concious or not.. I just need to try and put everything together and process the information and I can’t. I know I’m going to be hurting for a long time.. But I need to try and get on with things, I have a 4 month old son to look after, so I’m busy most of the time, but as soon as he’s asleep I ask these questions.
So I’m up all night, and have to get up early. I can’t even reminisce about her, because I’m asking myself these.. And I don’t know at all.
Another thing, I read hearing is one of the last senses to go?
Does that mean even though her eyes were open and she was unresponsive she could hear us?
And, how come she wasn’t blinking? Would it have been lack of oxygen to the brain?
Thankyou for your answers.
I realize alot of my questions can’t be answered, I’d just like to believe she was out of it and didn’t know what was happening. The thought of her laying there, listening to us and unable to talk or move terrifies me.
Barbie – That was beautiful! It made me cry. Thankyou so much.

I’m sorry for your loss. Lung cancer is a very aggressive and most often fatal cancer, especially when it is caught so late, even when it is caught in the early stages some people only have weeks or months left to live.

Q&A: I’m a recovering alcoholic–1 yr clean. My friend is an active food addict and still questions me. Is this OK?
Question by Book Diva: I’m a recovering alcoholic–1 yr clean. My friend is an active food addict and still questions me. Is this OK?
Sometimes when we talk and I am honestly, simply tired/sleepy she will say in an accusatory tone: “Your voice sounds sluggish. Have you been drinking?” My friend is 4″11″ inches and 350lbs. She has type 2 Diabetes, arthritic knees, a terminal, lung disease and high blood pressure. She daily eats many salty, fattening foods. For her upcoming birthday she has requested that I give her a KFC gift certificate. I do not question her about any of that maybe because I am not thin myself. I am 5″5″/ 170lbs. I am on and off of different diets/eating plans/exercise plans all of the time. Still–I feel that she is being hypothetical to always question me about drinking when she has never even tried any treatment/exercise/restriction on fattening foods, any diet *ever*–in the many years I’ve known her. Her rational: Alcoholism kills and destroys lives faster than morbid obesity. So she is correct to stay on me constantly and *not* expect to be treated that way herself. What do you think?

lung cancer questions please?
Question by jillybeanz: lung cancer questions please?
Hi,
I am a 44 yr old female, smoker and just found out that I might have lung cancer. Last Sunday I went to the hospital with chest pains, I thought I was having a heart attack, they did an EKG it came back fine, they did some blood work and the Doctor sd he wanted to do some more testing cuz my blood isn’t coagulating right…..so they did a CT scan and used this dye they run through the iv….he came back a while later and sd that they found a mass on my upper right lung lobe. I was 3.5 hours from home so I went to my regular Doctor and they faxed him the test results. I went there yesterday and he sd that he is concerned because the mass is spiculated 1.8 CM. He drew me a pic and it looked like little points I guess would be a good way to put it. My shoulders and back have been killing me too, but I have always just put that under the fibro/arthritis I have. I take alot of pain meds for the fibro and arthritis.
He didn’t come right out and say it is lung cancer, but they called the pulmonoligist and I am going to go there next week when they get the actual film that the hospital sent out today.
My q is this, being spiculated is that a sure sign of cancer? I wonder if this stabbing shoulder pain is actually from what is going on in my lungs and not the fibro, it is like a very bad stabbing pain that last for a minute then goes away, in the shoulder and down to around the elbow. I also wake up every morning with my hands and fingers swollen, as the day progresses it goes down…I hope I am asking my q’s right. I am just very scared. My mom died from lung cancer at 49, so I have that and the cigs going on, I am going to quit of course, just been so nervous I haven’t quit cold turkey…Any answers would be appreciated, I just really feel lost atm.
Thanks….

Answer by gone then returned
Do not jump to any conclusions just yet. Just wait and see what your doctor says and what the future holds. Even if it not the best news, not everyone who contracts lung disease dies from it.
Consider yourself extra special, so special in fact that you will automatically get through anything thrown at you, even this.
Of course to live another 40 healthy years you need to give up the smoking. It really is not that hard, I did it with Nicorette gum.
Believe in yourself, nothing can beat you.
Wait, Watch, Listen.
Good luck!

Q&A: What does it mean when an interviewer says that she doesn’t have any more questions for you…?
Question by brubbletrubble: What does it mean when an interviewer says that she doesn’t have any more questions for you…?
Aside from the obvious that she has no more questions to ask..I recently when on an interview for a large company (I had made it up to round 3 of an interview for a position in skin cancer, but wasnt chosen and was invited i interview for head and neck cancer since that is more suited towards my goals). I had told her that I had interviewed with the company prior and from my perspective, the interview went well..only it only lasted 25 mins (my other at this stage was 45 and i was asked intense questions for the same position/different dept). I was simply asked 2 how would you handle this situation ?s and a few regarding my past experience. Also, I wasn’t given a business card but told id hear back soon from herself or HR. What are my chances of getting a third interview? Did she cut the interview short bc she knew i was not the right candidate or because I obviously was fit/qualified for the position seeing that I had already met with others? Has this happened to anyone else and there been a positive outcome? Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated
Best answer:
Answer by bull_rooster_aardvark
I suspect that either she cut it short because she felt you were not right, or that is just her style – to only ask a few things and make a determination based on that (and maybe she was running short of time). This could be a bad thing or could just be neutral – but hey, you’ll know soon enough so don’t sweat it.

I bet you could look up the rest and get all those anser faster. If not online, perhaps in a textbook.

Questions for men that have knowledge of Testicular Cancer?
Question by : Questions for men that have knowledge of Testicular Cancer?
My Fiance is a testicular cancer survivor. We weren’t together at that time. He was 35 when diagnosed with stage 4 testicular cancer his cancer spread to his lungs and his liver. He is VERY self conscious of his performance in the bedroom. He constantly tells me of his younger, LARGER, LONGER LASTING days. Well he isn’t getting any younger, he has lost a testicle and as a result of that his testosterone level has dropped significantly. I admit that without prolonged foreplay he tends to beat me to the finish line on many occasions, but he satisfies me whether I get there or not. I have NO complaints and I reassure him of this regularly. I wouldn’t care if we stayed just the way we are. He jokes with me about it, but it really bothers him. Our financial situations isn’t the greatest due to doctor bills from his cancer as well as financial obligations and our future wedding plans. He wants to go to the doctor to see about hormone replacement but we really can’t afford it. Are any of the OTC male enhancement drugs really affective and would you recommend them to some one with a history of testicular cancer. Thank you for your help.
Best answer:
Answer by ben s
If by “beats me to the finish line” you mean he ejaculates before you orgasm, then more testosterone is not going to help. Low testosterone can cause erectile dysfunction and low libido, but not premature ejaculation. Unless he is losing his erection, low testosterone is not the cause of “performance problems.”
Also, it’s worth noting that a single testicle should be able to maintain his testosterone levels in the normal range for an adult male.
If he is interested in medical treatment of premature ejaculation, there are several drugs that can be used to help him last longer. These drugs are actually anti-depressant medications, but they have a helpful side-effect of prolonging time to orgasm (although, this can cause a lot of frustration for men trying to satisfy women on anti-depressants!). Another option is sex therapy. He should talk to his urologist about this. Don’t waste your money on the OTC products advertised on the radio–they don’t work and they are just capitalizing on people’s insecurities.

Questions about breast cancer treatment.?
Question by Nikki in PA: Questions about breast cancer treatment.?
A friend has been diagnosed with Stage 2 A breast cancer. Using the TNM system, it is classified as T1 N1 M0. She had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago along with axillary lymph node dissection. The tumor was almost 2cm and there were 3 nodes that tested positive. The doctor is recommending chemo therapy and then radiate to follow that. Has anyone had cancer around this stage that can tell me about their treatment? How bad was the chemo? How long was the chemo? Etc.. Any and all answers appreciated.
So, if someone gets chemo every 3 weeks, they might get it multiple times within that week? Is this intravenous chemo? I’ve read up on something called dense-dose chemo therapy, where you get that every 2 weeks.. I’m really curious.
Also, what is the survival rate for this type of cancer? I know this is all vague details, since every cancer is so different, but I’ve known alot of people that have not survived cancer.. Is this something most people can survive?
Best answer:
Answer by Erika
I had breast cancer I just completed my treatment about a month and a half ago, I had a mastsctomy done and they also removed three lymph nodes also tested positive. My chemo treatment was six sessions three days out of the week but every 3 weeks followed by 36 session of radiation. Many people say that chemo is a very bad that you lose wait that you throw up all day that you cant eat, Icant tell you that all that is not true but what i will tell you is that i never went through none of that the only thing that i experienced was the last day of each session i had no flavor in my mouth felt tired but just for one day.I believe the reason is that i never seen chemo with fright i went in there letting the cancer cell that i was there to kill them as dumb as it sounds i would literaly talk to them and tell them YOU DONT BELONG IN MY BODY!! yea I know its dumb but hey it worked for me. I believe in the power of the mind if you believe that chemo will get you sick trust me IT WILL. The radiation you really dont feel anything you just lay there. After about 5 weeks the skin will get dark look at it as a very long day at the beach i do recommend to use alot i mean alot of aloe lotion at least 5 times a day they say three is enough but a little extra wont hurt. Other than that its nothing big. As for me the hardest part from chemo was the hair part but like me always making good out of something bad didnt think much of it. Use this time to play with different looks its fun. Hope I helped a little good luck to your friend everything will be fine. Remember that saying what doesnt kill you makes you stronger.

3 Medical Ethic Questions …..Who is good at answering these?? I need your expert opinions on these 3 cases, please any opinions for each case will help please read over and answer. thanks
Case 1
A 43 year old man was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer, and he was given 6 months to live. The physician provides encouragement, modifying his diet and lifestyle, and prescribing medications. The patient agrees with the management plan, and gave instructions to his doctor not to discuss this with anyone. 3 days later, the patient’s spouse calls the physician asking about her husband’s condition. The wife is actually the physician’s first cousin. What action should the physician take?
Case 2
While in residency training, a junior resident physician discovers that the chief resident is taking amphetamines while working the night shift in the ER. The junior resident tells his department head but was given instructions to keep this incident to himself. If you are the junior resident, what would you do?
Case 3
In the Internal Medicine clinic, you were assigned to handle a 45 year old man with chronic liver disease, known to have a very bad temper. He constantly argues with the nursing staff while in the reception area of the clinic, and when you examine him, he would always have very rude comments to you, saying things like “Do you know what you are doing?” “Are you a real doctor?” What would be the best course of action?
Best answer:
Answer by Ally H
Case 1: If the patient gave explicit instructions to not speak of his condition with anyone then the doctor should not give the spouse any information. This is the basis of the HIPPA laws. The only way the doctor could legally give out the information to the man’s spouse is if the man with the cancer had given prior consent, in writing.
Case 2: This one is a bit tougher. What is the reason for taking the amphetamines? Does the chief resident have ADHD and needs something like Adderall to help keep him focused? Or is the chief resident taking “speed” because he is addicted to it? If the first, keep it to yourself because without the drugs the chief resident may be unable to successfully treat patients. If the second, do not keep the situation to yourself because lives are at stake and the amphetamines may cause harm.
Case 3: This is a typical patient. You must keep yourself calm and collected and never let your own temper get the best of you. Answer all his questions (as rude as they may be) to the best of your ability giving examples to alleviate any concerns he may have over your ability to treat him. Treat him with respect and attempt to make him as comfortable as possible. Having a good bedside manner is sometimes just as important as having medical knowledge. Knowing how to deal with people in stressful situations is important, too. There are a lot of people like this out there. Being in the medical field means you need to know how to handle them.

Q&A: buying an older home. Basement and A/C questions?
Question by Elyse N: buying an older home. Basement and A/C questions?
we are currently in the process of home buying (first time). We didn’t qualify for first time home buyers because of our income (boo) BUT we did get some good rates. 3.5% financing with only 5% down. Anyway…on the top of our list is an older home, that looks NEW! i was very fooled by the pictures. When i saw it was 120 years old i was like…No way!!!! Everything on the main floor has been redone. Brand new coutnertops, flooring, appliances, cabinets. Laundry room has been redone. Bathrooms have been redone (May need a new bathtub.) only ONE room needs some new dry wall, which we can do ourselves…not a huge deal. The family room needs new carpet, has juice stains all over it. insulated 2 car garage, fenced yard…beautiful brand new garden shed
Other than that…we thought this was the only fixing up we would have to do. Until we saw the basement…….YIKES! what a nightmare. I thought i was going to get rabies from just walking down there.
It has the stone walls, the floor is not really even. There is asbestos in the basement (which sellers claim they will have it removed since our lenders wont give us the loan until it is removed). So our problems now:
1) the basement in general
2) the asbestos
and for the kicker…it doesn’t have central air! This is the biggest problem my fiance has with the place. the basement, we can fix up as best we can…asbestos will be removed, and examined a million times before we move in. It has the hot water heaters, the radiators. So NOW were looking into putting in central air. The house has no ducts, so we’re talking CHA CHING! clearly….
Any thoughts on if we should continue with this? the house in general is very nice, very well taken care of. Any experts on any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

You should find someone in your area that can give you a quote on installing the central air. There are systems designed specifically for installation in older homes so the price might not be as high as you think. If the basement bothers you that much you can hire someone else to do some finish work on it. Not all basements are useful as regular rooms. Perhaps just plan on using it for the appliances (heat and your future air conditioner) and storage.

Green Scissors – Where to Cut and Where to Invest (Questions and Answers)
Cutting waste and powering up the economy should be the focus of the upcoming federal government, says the Green Party of Canada. The Greens have suggested a list of potential inclusions for the budget to Finance Minister Flaherty. “All of the elements we have suggested are politically practical and should be in line with the Conservative Party policy goals. Minister Flaherty may have already included some of them, but we wanted to offer our ideas in the spirit of cooperation,” said Green Leader Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. Greens have suggested increasing federal revenue by closing loopholes for off-shore tax havens (saving .2 billion), taxing estates exceeding million (bringing in .5 billion/year) and raising the corporate tax rate back to the 2009 level of 19%, still competitive with OECD rates (saving .5 billion). “With these three measures that mostly target the richest portion of the population, we can create savings that can be used to get Canadians back to work and reduce the deficit,” said May. Tax relief for business, workers and youth is the best way to stimulate the stagnating economy. Greens suggest eliminating the punitive increases in EI payments and deductions and investing in youth employment programs. “Our focus should be on supporting the small and medium businesses that are the lifeblood of our economy,” said May. “They should not be stifled by a regulatory burden that makes it harder to employ people in good …
