If 40% of people diagnosed w/ lung cancer are former smokers who quit 8-9 years ago?
Question by Nina Lee: If 40% of people diagnosed w/ lung cancer are former smokers who quit 8-9 years ago?
….. does that mean a smoker should wait until they are at least 80 to quit smoking?
My grandmother is having a biopsy for lung cancer, she quit smoking 9 years ago. While reading up on lung cancer, I found this stat. I know it’s not a joking matter but that is a scary stat. I mean, if a 30 year old quits smoking, shouldn’t they start to get nervous in 8 or 9 years?
I know, 60 is greater than 40. That 8-9 year thing is what gets me.
Okay, while looking for that stat above, I found this one so nevermind this question. This is promising. B’s mom…. READ UP while you are still young, lol. : )
“Even if a person stops smoking, it takes ten to fifteen years before their risk of developing lung cancer drops close to the levels of non-smokers”
So being at that level “IS” promising. Very cool.
I have no idea April, lol. I googled it from my cell phone a few days ago. I’ll see if I can find it again.
Daniela… we must have been typing at the same time! That is great news about your husband. Very promising and motivating. I haven’t been smoking but want one so bad (pregnant). I want to use this opportunity to give them up for good and your answer just motivated me. Thank you.

Both my grandparents died from lung cancer. im 18 years old and have been smoking since i was 16 but i just quit 3 weeks ago. I also started working out and running. I however get sharp pains in my chest when i breath in and sometimes randomly get weird feelings in my chest area when i breath in too. Should i be worried about lung cancer?

Answer by Laura
You are probably just out of shape, since you just started working out AND just quit smoking – the chemicals do different things in your lungs, so they’re adjusting to the absence of smoke. I’d say as long as the discomfort is only when you’ve been exercising, don’t worry at all, just work toward getting in shape gradually. If it’s more frequent than that, you should probably check with your doctor – not necessarily because it’s cancer, but because there are other things that could cause you to feel poorly and the dr. can help you figure out what the problem is.

How long does it take smokers cough to go away, after you quit ?
Question by : How long does it take smokers cough to go away, after you quit ?
I’ve been drinking beer for close to 4 years straight.
Then one day my nerves were feeling jittery, so I grabbed one of my dads cigarettes to smoke, while I drink my beer.
I wasn’t instantly hooked.
I just decided to bum a few from him each day after that.
So a month into smoking them, smokers cough hit me.
I stopped a week ago and I still have this funny little cough.
Nothing major, no sore throat or pain.
Just a cough that kind of tickles my chest, but it comes on it’s own.

How can I convince my husband to quit smoking without pestering him?
Question by Koozie: How can I convince my husband to quit smoking without pestering him?
I love my husband dearly but wish he would quit smoking. I know I can’t make him quit, and I do good not to bother him about it constently, I just drop a few hints now and then. He gets mad at me if I won’t buy cigarettes for him. I can’t help it, I want him to quit so I feel bad if I do buy them. Is that so wrong of me? My grandfather died of lung cancer due to smoking most of his life. I don’t want to see my husband die from it too. I love him too much. I tease him and tell him if he loves me and the kids he would quit. He teases back and says if I love him, I would pick some up when I’m at the store. His father smokes too and he’s developing a really nasty cough from it. Does he not see how bad it is? He says he doesnt care, it helps him relieve stress. How can I convince him there are better things out there for that? I mean, I’m right here…the kids are here…isn’t that strong enough motive? And the smell! Makes the kids stink when he holds them. Its horrible! What can I say?
My kids are 21 mo and 6 mo old. I know its extremely bad for them as well when it comes off of his clothes. The doctor has told him this. The oldest, my son, had sleep apnea when he was younger. I think daddy smoking was part of it. Hes real good about smoking outside the house but he doesn’t get it that it is still in his clothes. I know its his decision, but its mine and the kids too isn’t it? I mean we are suffering too in a different context of course. Him internally, us watching him hurt himself and getting second hand smoke as well. I know the kids are little and don’t know the difference, but Im concerned for their heatlh as well. If he doesn’t care about himself, he should as least care about them.

Answer by Carla S
tell him you won’t buy them for him. it’s his bad habit and it’s his choice and that’s that. offer to help him find a way out when he’s ready. but the more you harp on his the more he probably digs his heels in and sticks with this bad habit. he knows it’s wrong and yet he pressures you to buy him smokes? he isn’t respecting you or himself.

Q&A: Why did I develop a smokers cough after I quit smoking?
Question by : Why did I develop a smokers cough after I quit smoking?
I smoked for upwards of 30 years, I recently quit cold turkey, wasn’t near as hard as I thought it was going to be by the way. However about three weeks after quitting I developed a smokers cough, or at least I’m assuming that’s what it is since I have no symptoms of a cold, the flu or a respiratory infection. I am coughing up small amounts of phlegm, it’s usually clear, sometimes a greenish white. Any Ideas why this is happening now that I’ve quit smoking. I never had a smokers cough when I was a smoker.

I gave up smoking with champix, how I quit smoking cigarettes

This is how I gave up smoking and my experience of it, I couldn’t do it by will power alone. I have tried to quit before but failed. This new drug has come out called Champix and I thought I’d give it a go, I loved smoking and really didnt want to stop but Im getting older and really want some fitness to do the things I like to do. Its also annoying that the world has alienated smokers and I am sick of that too. So here is my short story of how I quit. I chew lots of gum and also like the occasional redskin lolly to help me through. I might live longer now hopefully. With Champix, I think you actually start to withdraw the day you start taking them. The first week is spent smoking with no satisfaction. By the second week your brain has withdrawn from nicotine because the champix is blocking it. All you are doing after that is satisfying your physical habit of the action of having a smoke. Set a day at around 2 weeks after you start taking champix and stop, I know its hard but just do it! You will start to feel better about not smoking than it was to smoke. Good Luck !!!! Always consult your doctor if you have any issues. Most of them will be to withdrawing from cigarettes, but the tablets can make you feel sick, just make sure you eat before taking them.

After you quit smoking does smokers cough go away?
Question by ozzie: After you quit smoking does smokers cough go away?
Best answer:
Answer by Julia Warhol
Yes.
Cigarette smoke contains chemicals that irritate the air passages and lungs. When a smoker inhales these substances, the body tries to protect itself by coughing. The well-known “early morning” cough of smokers happens for a different reason. Normally, cilia (tiny hairlike formations lining the airways) beat outward and sweep harmful material out of the lungs. Cigarette smoke, however, decreases the sweeping action, so some of the poisons in the smoke remain in the lungs. When a smoker sleeps, some cilia recover and begin working again. After waking up, the smoker coughs because the lungs are trying to clear away the poisons that built up the previous day. Unfortunately, prolonged exposure to smoke completely destroys the cilia’s ability to function. Then the smoker’s lungs are even more exposed and susceptible than before, especially to bacteria and viruses in the air.
Within a few days you will probably begin to notice some remarkable changes in your body. Your sense of smell and taste may improve. You will breathe easier, and your smoker’s hack will begin to disappear, although you may notice that you will continue to cough for a while. And you will be free from the mess, smell, inconvenience, expense, and dependence of cigarette smoking.
When we smoke and for all the years that we smoked each and every puff on a cigarette destroyed the cilia, or tiny little hair-like projections lining our respiratory tract. These cilia are responsible for filtering out all the impurities we breathe on a daily basis. They line our nose and reach all the way down into our lungs. When we quit smoking, the first thing, essentially to start repairing itself, is the respiratory tract……and as soon as we take the last puff, the cilia start to regenerate themselves. In some people these cilia grow back faster than others.
Coughing is a natural byproduct of the reemerging cilia. It makes no difference how long or how much you smoked, the rate of regrowth can and is different in most of us. The faster the cilia grow, the more likely we are to cough lots in the first weeks of a quit. Our bodies are healing and our lungs are clearing themselves of all the toxins and impurities.
But whether your cilia grow back rapidly and we cough lots or slowly and we cough little….any cough lasting more that a few weeks and is persistant and is accompanied by pain and or fever, should be checked by a qualified physcian. The body heals remarkedly fast but smoking often covers a variety of other illnesses and conditions and a lingering cough should not always be associated with quitting smoking. It’s a great idea for any of us quitting to have our lungs checked out afterwards. It really does help with peace of mind.
