UK booze culture raises cancer concerns

Heads of government are continuing to meet at the UN to look at tackling four major diseases: diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular, and chronic respiratory disease. Collectively, they’re known as Non Communicable diseases. In the UK, alcohol causes about 6% of cancer deaths each year – that’s about 9000. As little as 3 units a day can increase the risk of mouth, throat, food-pipe, breast, and bowel cancers. Al Jazeera’s Laurence Lee looks at the mounting concern about Britain’s booze culture.

Did you know that Meat raises lung cancer?

Question by kookoo4travel: Did you know that Meat raises lung cancer?
People who eat a lot of red meat and processed meats have a higher risk of several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colorectal cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

The work is the first big study to show a link between meat and lung cancer. It also shows that people who eat a lot of meat have a higher risk of liver and esophageal cancer and that men raise their risk of pancreatic cancer by eating red meat.

“A decrease in the consumption of red and processed meat could reduce the incidence of cancer at multiple sites,” Dr. Amanda Cross and colleagues at the U.S. National Cancer Institute wrote in their report, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine.

The researchers studied 500,000 people aged 50 to 71 who took part in a diet and health study done in conjunction with the AARP, formerly the American Association for Retired Persons.

After eight years, 53,396 cases of cancer were diagnosed.

“Statistically significant elevated risks (ranging from 20 percent to 60 percent) were evident for esophageal, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer, comparing individuals in the highest with those in the lowest quintile of red meat intake,” the researchers wrote.

The people in the top 20 percent of eating processed meat had a 20 percent higher risk of colorectal cancer — mostly rectal cancer — and a 16 percent higher risk for lung cancer.

“Furthermore, red meat intake was associated with an elevated risk for cancers of the esophagus and liver,” the researchers wrote.

These differences held even when smoking was accounted for.

“Red meat intake was not associated with gastric or bladder cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, or melanoma,” added the researchers, whose study is freely available on the Internet at http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document& doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0040325.

Red meat was defined as all types of beef, pork and lamb. Processed meat included bacon, red meat sausage, poultry sausage, luncheon meats, cold cuts, ham and most types of hot dogs including turkey dogs.

Meats can cause cancer by several routes, the researchers noted. “For example, they are both sources of saturated fat and iron, which have independently been associated with carcinogenesis,” the researchers wrote.

Meat is also a source of several chemicals known to cause DNA mutations, including N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Jeanine Genkinger of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and Anita Koushik of the University of Montreal said the findings fit in with other research.

“Meat consumption in relation to cancer risk has been reported in over a hundred epidemiological studies from many countries with diverse diets,” they wrote in a commentary.

World Cancer Day Raises Cancer Prevention Awareness

World Cancer Day Raises Cancer Prevention Awareness

Article by Katie Kelley

Cancer prevention is the main goal of World Cancer Day 2010, led by the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO).

An estimated 12 million people worldwide received a cancer diagnosis each year and 7.6 million will die of the disease.

Scheduled for February 4, 2010, participating organizations will educate the public on cancer prevention methods. Close to 40% of cancers are potentially preventable through relatively easy lifestyle and health measures including:

- Stopping tobacco use and avoiding second-hand smoke- Limiting alcohol consumption- Avoiding excessive sun exposure- Committing to healthy weight through exercise and eating habits- Protecting against cancer-causing infections

World Cancer Day educates the public about the difference types of cancer with a key message, that “Cancer can be prevented, too.” Educational information will be available educating the public against smoking, sun exposure and other hazards. Resources and additional information about World Cancer Day can be found on the UICC Web sit at http://www.worldcancercampaign.org.

The five-year program is designed to “raise awareness about the ways we can prevent cancer through the choices we make” according to the organization’s Web site. Businesses, individuals, and non-profit organizations will work together on Feb. 4 to distribute information about cancer prevention.

Although much of the literature focuses on anti-smoking lifestyles, the risks of sun exposure and healthy diets and physical activity, other cancer prevention methods will also be discussed. Environmental and workplace toxins can also contribute to deadly forms of cancer, such as mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.

An additional, but often overlooked cause of lung cancer is asbestos, an insulating fiber related to several life-threatening illnesses and cancer, including mesothelioma, asbestosis and disease of the lining of the lungs. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, and is often the result of asbestos exposure from 20 or 30 years prior. Unfortunately, the prognosis for many mesothelioma patients is very grim – some living a mere eight months after diagnosis.

Because mesothelioma is directly associated with asbestos exposure, many workplace environments have reduced or forbidden the use of the insulating fiber to ensure the safety of its employees or to prevent potential mesothelioma lawsuits if one of its employees develops the deadly cancer. The costs of mesothelioma treatments can be very expensive, which leads some individuals to seek a mesothelioma lawyer to discuss further legal recourse.

Coast Capital Savings Proudly Sponsors COPS FOR CANCER.

Help us help the kids.

We are proud to be the official Tour Sponsor of the 2009 Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer tour, a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and local police agencies to raise funds for research into paediatric cancer research, programs and camps like Camp Goodtimes.

When does the campaign start?

We’re excited to kick off our annual fundraising campaign for this important cause on Wednesday, August 19. The campaign will run until Saturday, October 3. Keep your eyes peeled for more information at a branch near you this August.

Thanks in part to the generosity of our staff and members, hundreds of BC children living with cancer had the opportunity to attend Camp Goodtimes last year. For these children, Camp Goodtimes is a special place, providing them with the opportunity to just be kids and to be around other children with cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer tour is our largest corporate fundraiser and to date weâve raised a whopping .5 million for this cause. In 2008, our staff raised more than 8,000 through fundraisers such as head shaves, karaoke contests, bake sales, and more.
