How to: Rent a Dumpster for a Remodeling Project
How to: Rent a Dumpster for a Remodeling Project
Article by Gilcrisht
When embarking on a remodel, many DIYers forget one important item on the supplies list: a dumpster. Whether tackling a small room, such as a half-bath, or the much larger and more involved kitchen remodel, you will have materials that require disposal. You could certainly make multiple trips to the nearest dump over the course of the project, but that costs more than renting a dumpster, in terms of both time and money. Follow these simple steps to find the right dumpster for your next remodeling project:
1) Do a general search online. Start by typing, for example, “dumpster rental Dayton OH” into your search engine of choice. This will bring back the top results for dumpster companies in your area. Make a list of the top 10.
2) Read online reviews of the companies on your list. Yelp, Kudzu and Angie’s List are excellent places to find reviews written by clients who have used a particular company’s services. Discard any with multiple low ratings and negative reviews. Opt for companies that receive high ratings overall; don’t pull a company out of the running for just one bad review, as no company can please 100 percent of its customers 100 percent of the time. Rank the companies in order of customer satisfaction.
3) Call the top three companies on your list and request quotes. Discuss the size of your project, so the company can suggest the appropriate-size dumpster, and also inquire about what materials each company will and will not allow in its dumpster. Most dumpster rental companies allow for large appliances such as air conditioners, dishwashers, dryers, drying cabinets, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, water heaters and trash compactors, plus small appliances such as microwaves. Other large items typically approved for dumpsters are carpet, computer equipment, furniture, mattresses, TVs, yard waste and general rubbish. Certain dumpster rental companies will not allow hazardous materials in their dumpsters, including paint, chemicals, solvents, and asbestos. Since you will likely have such materials, it is important to find a company that will take them. If your top choices do not, conduct your “dumpster rental Dayton OH” search again, redoing steps 1 through 3 until you find the right rental company for your remodeling project at the right price.
4) Decide where the dumpster will go. If your only option for dumpster placement is your driveway or in front of your home, check with your home owners association to make sure it won’t be a violation. If you do not belong to an HOA, check with the city as there might be regulations against dumpsters or limitations in terms of time allowed for dumpster placement.
5) Clear the area. The last thing you want to have happen is for the dumpster to arrive before you made room for it. Be prepared on the day of delivery.

Is it illegal to rent a home with absestos?
Question by Saleen: Is it illegal to rent a home with absestos?
I live in a home in South Australia. So this question would be best answered by an australian who may know our laws.. Anyways.. I moved into this home about 3 months ago renting with my young son (private rental). I looked up some history on my area to find majority of homes including my own have asbestos in it. I asked kindly to my land agent if they could look into removing it but he said NO. he will not.. he wont even fix a leak in my roof which runs water into the dining room when its raining… Is he legally allowed to refuse to fix these problems? And legally allowed to rent me out a home with asbestos.. where the walls seem not structually sound

Q&A: how can i find out if the building i rent in has asbestos?
Question by vivid: how can i find out if the building i rent in has asbestos?
Is there a test, or do i have call in an inspector. And also what are the signs to look for.
Best answer:
Answer by chatsplas
OPEN your eyes. Look around.
If it is in your building, why is this a concern?
If it is in your unit, it could be a issue.
If the asbestos is encapsulated and undisturbed, it is of little or no risk. If it is disturbed, the fibers get into the air.
Look at pipes, see what they are wrapped with.
Many older floor tiles are asbestos, some houses were sided with asbestos shingles, many homes had asbestos roofing shingles, and there is insulation on pipes and near furnaces. Asbestos was used for its excellent fire retardent and insulation properties.

Answer by alterfemego
So you’re a licensed inspector? How is it that you just came to know this? In most cases as long as the substance is not disturbed, it is fairly safe. If you are that concerned about it, I suggest you look for a new place to live.

Should I rent an apartment with an asbestos warning?
Question by davidvanpaten: Should I rent an apartment with an asbestos warning?
I live in California. An apartment I’m thinking about renting has a warning required by proposition 65.
The warning says my apartment contains asbestos and other harmful chemicals in the building materials and in “emissions, fumes, and smoke from resident and guest activities including but not limited to use of motor vehicles, barbecues, and tobacco products. Disturbance of or damage to interior apartment surfaces may increase the potential for exposure to these substances”.
Should I be concerned? Does this mean if I turn on the heater these harmful chemicals will be released?
