How long does it take for VATS related nerve damage to repair itself?
Question by RONALD B: How long does it take for VATS related nerve damage to repair itself?
I had successful VATS surgery for early stage lung cancer five weeks ago. My arm, side and right breast are completely numb and extremely painful. I am unable to put my arm down to my side and must hold it out at a right angle to my body in order to get any relief.Pain pills do not help. I also have a great deal of pain in my upper back. My doctor says the nerves will repair themselves in time. How much time does it take? I can’t take this much longer.
Best answer:
Answer by HK3738
this repair timing is unpredictable, talk to your doctor about lidocaine jelly, lyrica, TCA’s, nerve blocks, or pain clinic referrals, these are all helpful ideas, hope you feel better soon, good luck

Can your lungs repair themselves after quitting smoking?
Question by Vulcan Windsurfer: Can your lungs repair themselves after quitting smoking?
For about ten years I was a smoker, ranging from light to pretty heavy at certain times. I’m now 32 years old and have not smoked in about 2 years. I also do a lot of running and biking now, and have run three marathons. So the smoking didn’t do enough damage to prevent me from being very active physically, but I’m sure it did some damage.
Anyway, I was reading about how apples and apple products are thought to be really good for the lungs. Eating a lot of them may prevent asthma from happening in children; it is thought to lower the risk of lung cancer significantly. So I started getting unfiltered apple juice, and bought some relatively inexpensive apple polyphenol supplements.
This is the weird part…I took the apple polyphenol capsule for the first time at night, before bed. When I woke up the next morning, I had a cigarette taste in my mouth, just like I had in the mornings as a smoker, and for several months after. I hadn’t experienced this in probably 18 months, until taking the apple pill. It was like it stimulated my lungs to clear out some smoking gunk that was still lingering in them after all this time. That’s how I always thought of the morning cigarette taste, anyway; that gunk had worked itself out of my lungs during the night. I now take the polyphenols daily and this has happened a couple times (waking up with the cigarette taste).
Maybe this is coincidence, but it has me wondering, how much can the lungs heal themselves after the abuse of smoking? I’d like to think that between the running and the nutritional help, they can one day be almost as good as new.

Ad the good news is….. yes. The lungs can bounce back almost miraculously from just about anything.

What do I use to repair cracks on the floor along a concrete wall?
Question by sjrockey: What do I use to repair cracks on the floor along a concrete wall?
Hello,
We are repairing the floor in our older (1966) gymnasium. The walls are concrete block and the floor is concrete with 9″ (assumed asbestos) tile. The floor around the edge of the wall is cracking due to expansion and contraction. We are going to put base molding down, but want to fill in those cracks before putting down the molding.
What is best to use to fill in the cracks? I know using a concrete filler will just crack again…any advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Steve

Answer by A.C.Girl
You can use seek-a-flex, which adheres well to concrete and contracts and expands with it. Its basically a silicone. May be spelled sic-a-flex.

Q&A: What are some ways I can repair my lungs after smoking?
Question by eve marz: What are some ways I can repair my lungs after smoking?
I started smoking sometime in my teens. I quit about a year ago at 22, and I was wondering if there are vitamins I can take, or foods I might eat to repair the damage I caused on my precious lungs!
Now that I started jogging I can really feel the impact smoking put on my lungs.
Best answer:
Answer by pixienicki2
In general gettings lots of vitamins and minerals would be good. So lots of fruits and veggies, especially dark leafy greens. You could also take a multivitamin pill. Or maybe Vitimin e, which is good for healing. But in general, I’ve heard it takes about 5 years for your lungs to show no evidence of smoking after you’ve quit. So at least they will eventually go back to normal!

Q&A: Cost to repair plaster ceiling in small kitchen of 60-year old house?
Question by Stuck in the Middle Ages: Cost to repair plaster ceiling in small kitchen of 60-year old house?
We had a pinhole leak above our gypsum plaster ceiling (house was built in 1949 and this may be the original ceiling material). Thankfully the leak was facing downwards, so the wood a few inches above the leak is largely dry and undamaged.
Much of the gypsum plaster was soaked. The ceiling had to be opened about 4′ x 3′ in one area to find the leak and another hole was made about 5′ away to relieve additional leaking. In addition the track lighting fixture bent the center of the kitchen ceiling, so that 5′ strip with the lights (which connects the areas with the holes) will likely need to be replaced/patched too; we could hear the sizzling of water in the lights and realized quickly there was water in them and shut them off.
An adjuster is coming tomorrow to look at the damage. The plumbing repair was made yesterday and isn’t covered, but the kitchen ceiling repair would be if it exceeds the deductible. It’s a small galley kitchen, but we live in a metropolitan area (near Washington, DC) where house repairs are expensive. Any general thoughts on how to estimate the cost are appreciated.
Also, would there be lead and/or asbestos in the ceiling? I assume lead paint is likely due to the house’s age. If some sort of expert would need to come in because of potential asbestos issues, I assume the cost would increase, but I know very little about any of this. Heck, I was just happy to find the main water valve and break open the ceiling to find the leak and stop any further damage.
Thanks for your insight.

Answer by HARRISON
You can replace the plaster if you want to be a purist, but sheetrock is the way to go for price, time and convenience. Asbestos would be found in insulation, not the plaster itself. Lead wouldn’t be a danger unless the painted surface was reduced to breathable dust.

Question by yankeegirl: Will my lungs repair themselves after quitting smoking and how long does it take?
I recently quit smoking and I’m very proud of myself because it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Now that I think I’m in the clear from going back to it, I’m wondering if my lungs will undue the damage I have done to them and how long it will take. I smoked for about 19 years.

Congrats on quitting – I quit 3 years ago. I’m not sure but I think it takes 1 year for every 5 you smoke, so in your case approx 4 years.

What kinds of food help repair damaged lungs?
Question by kayencee: What kinds of food help repair damaged lungs?
My father smokes and I sing. I am a victim of second-hand smoking. What makes it even worse is that I have asthma and I noticed recently, it’s harder for me to hold a note for a long period of time when I could do it before.
I’m guessing my lungs are going bad. Are there any ways I can repair my lungs? Maybe certain foods? I heard that apples repair damage done to lungs caused by smoke… Is that true?

Answer by cwgrrl7
Not that I’m aware of…you may need to consult a pulmonologist (lung specialist doctor) to get more details on what you can do to help.

How can I repair my lungs after many years of smoking weed?
Question by Acacia: How can I repair my lungs after many years of smoking weed?
I quit smoking because I want a healthier life, and I like to be able to breath. I want some ideas on how to regain strength in my lungs. I not have Bronchitis and trust me it’s not my highlight of life. I’d love some natural ways to get rid of this.
Best answer:
Answer by Sam
Time.
My father smoked his whole life (he’s 52). He quit when he was 48 or so, he had an MRI done awhile back and his lungs were in poor condition, got another MRI done months ago and now – doctors say they’re 100% healthy.
I’m not sure if anything would help speed up the process. Just get fresh air!
