Would it be wrong to ask a hospital to donate funds for cancer research?
Question by Lorena: Would it be wrong to ask a hospital to donate funds for cancer research?
I’m participating in Team In Training, where members raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and train for endurance events. I recently visited MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and I felt moved to help those patients.
I was wondering if it would be morally wrong to ask the hospital for a donation?
Best answer:
Answer by catlover3
I’m not sure if anyone would consider it morally wrong, but the hospital’s funds go directly to the patients who are suffering from cancer, so I wouldn’t personally want to take money away from them. It’s possible the hospital may already donate to cancer research, or they may have a no donation policy to conserve their monetary resources for their own patients. You can always ask and see what happens!

Does the DEA lie while research concludes that THC has an “anti-tumoral effect”? Why is Tabacco so inverse?
Question by Steven G: Does the DEA lie while research concludes that THC has an “anti-tumoral effect”? Why is Tabacco so inverse?
Tobacco smokers in the study had as much as a 21-fold increase in lung cancer risk. Cigarette smokers, too, developed COPD more often in the study, and researchers found that marijuana did not impair lung function.
Tashkin, supported by other research, concluded that the active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, has an “anti-tumoral effect” in which “cells die earlier before they age enough to develop mutations that might lead to lung cancer.”
http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20090524/NEWS/905241067/1350?p=3&tc=pg
The simple answer: Marijuana is not nearly as dangerous or effective as Tobacco, and politicians have lied to you about it, along with drug and tobacco and alcohol companies.
However, the smoke from marijuana did swell the airways and lead to a greater risk of chronic bronchitis. – However, this is temporal and is avoided by cooling down the smoke.

Q&A: What is the best way to research my family tree?
Question by starwildfreedom: What is the best way to research my family tree?
I have just lost a grandfather to lung cancer and I am realizing just how much Ive lost now that he is gone. I would like to create a family tree, but I need help getting started. Can anyone recomend software or a research site I can use? Thank you!

Answer by Shirley T
I am very sorry about your grandfather. I know you miss him and I think it is wonderful that you would want to preserve his heritage.
First of all get as much information as possible from family members. Talk to the senior family members and tape them if they will let you. They might be confused on some things but what might seem to be little story tellings just possibly will turn out to be very important.
Go to your public library and find out what they have in the genealogy section. They might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com which has lots of records. They have all the censuses through 1930. The 1940 is not available to the public yet.
Now, be very careful about taking as fact information you see in family trees in any website(free or paid). They are submitted by folks like you and me. A lot of the information is not documented. You frequently will see different information on the same person. Then all too often you will see repeatedly the same information on the same person without documentation. That means a lot of people are copying without verifying. There are errors in family trees on the internet.
Use the information as clues as to where to get your documentation. Ancestry.Com and Rootsweb allows you to probe a name and get the name and email address of the submitter.
Call your nearest Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church and find out if they have a Family History Center. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City they have the world’s larges genealogical collection.
Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view for a nominal fee.
They don’t bring up their religion and they won’t send their missionaries by to ring your doorbell.
Cyndi’s list has a lot of websites that deal with family history and records.
While at the library and Family History Center, you will probably have a great opportunity to talk with people who can give you some great tips and advice.
Good Luck!

Great idea! I have done a few fundraisers and found that bake sales, car washes, and taking part in walks work well. You could check out the American Cancer Society for more information on fundraising, or info about walks in your area. As for names for your org- how about something like Cancer Crusaders? Best of luck on your efforts, you are doing a great thing!

Fundraising for cancer research?
Question by Pinay: Fundraising for cancer research?
This coming school year I will be starting a new club called “(My school’s name) for Cancer Relief/Research”. This will be the first time where I will be taking care of fundraising personally. The club will be donating to the National Cancer Institute. My questions is, what are some fundraisers that won’t cost much, have a good payoff, and will conincide sort of with what the club is all about?
One thing that we will be definitely doing is selling chocolates and candies. Every year, almost every club and sport does it and it sells out FAST!
Thank you so much for the help :]
PS
I am in a school of over 4,000 students and very diverse

You can also do homemade desserts. Ask your parents and grandparents or try to find old recipes and make them just write down wat ingredients are in them in case some one is allergic

Solar cells from tobacco plant. Are the tobacco companies behind this research?
Question by I.I.: Solar cells from tobacco plant. Are the tobacco companies behind this research?
Do you think the scientists that are researching this now “useful” plant are being paid by the tobacco companies? If not, why of all the thousands of species they couldn’t find a suitable plant other than tobacco?
Remember that there were studies funded by the tobacco companies which coincidentally found no correlation between smoking and lung cancer.
Best answer:
Answer by oikos
They probably are. So what? If they come up with something useful, people will start checking other plants to find something cheaper or something that doesn’t require good bottomland to grow.

The prognosis is excellent, IF you get it treated by conventional means. If it is confined to the thyroid, I think I would opt for surgical option rather than radiatioactive iodine therapy. Why are you opposed to the surgical approach?
You might want to discuss with the surgeon, and get a second opinion from an endocrinologist, putting it off, while closely watching it, until you are no longer breastfeeding. But that baby needs a healthy mom who is going to be around at least another couple of decades. Please don’t turn to alternative medicine for this.

cystic fibrosis research please support
Shinerama is Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser for cystic fibrosis research and care and celebrating its 45th anniversary. For more than four decades, student ‘shiners’ have taken part in Shinerama activities learning more about cystic fibrosis, meeting lifelong friends and having the chance to be part of something amazing. In 2009, as a way to celebrate the anniversary – more than 35000 students, friends and Shinerama alumni across Canada are going to try to raise million dollars to help find a cure or an effective control for CF! We can show everyone that working together we can make a difference. Cystic fibrosis is (CF) is a fatal, inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the lungs and digestive systems of its young victims. In Canada, over 3500 children and young adults have CF, and more than a million Canadians carry the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis. Despite aggressive treatment, lung infection and its complications eventually claim the life of virtually every person with CF. When Shinerama began in 1964, most kids with CF did not live long enough to attend kindergarten, but now thanks to research and treatment there is real hope that those living with CF can go to school, have a career and start a family. Shinerama is a great tradition, the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) is a great organization and fighting CF is a great cause so it is a WIN-WIN situation so please support me and the 2009 Shinerama campaign so someday when …

How does the discovery of cell regulation help with cancer research?
Question by Fancy: How does the discovery of cell regulation help with cancer research?
i know there are the cdks and cyclins that control cell division but how does that have to do with cancer? Im taking a guess but is it because the cdks and cyclins are mutated and keep on producing cells? aaaaa soo confused
Best answer:
Answer by Memere RN/BA
It only takes one cell to mutate, travel, and attach itself to more cell beginning the ‘infestation’ if you will and unless treatment is had, this mutation and division as well metastasizing will continue. They will only keep producing cells as long as they are not detected, Once detected and treatment begins, the end results usually are good. Hope that’s all you needed if not, I have more.

Q&A: Why don’t insurance companies do research on alternative medicine and therapy?
Question by Zombia likes sun people: Why don’t insurance companies do research on alternative medicine and therapy?
I became an avid believer of proper medical care for years. But later on I have seen how alternative medicine has save people going to the cutting board on too many occasions. For example, supplements can prevent many diseases and even cancer. Most Kidney stones, on the other hand, can be treated by simply drinking a cup of pickle juice everyday. Even pets when my dogs puppies contracted Parvo everyone told me to take them to the vet. I was told the cost would be over 7,000 for Parvo care treatement. The list goes on and on.

Q&A: Train for a cure (cancer research)?
Question by I <3 Trains (Hoosier): Train for a cure (cancer research)?
Hello everyone! Hope your day is going very well! I volunteer at a local railroad museum as an assistant conductor, and they’re taking up ideas for trains. I thought of as a public relations train the museum could do a train for the cure, with only taking enough of the income to cover the running costs of the locomotives. I am friends with several people on the board of the museum, and we are a non for profit, but i know everyone of us including myself know someone who has gone through cancer. I really want to organize it. I have even started a power point plan to present to the board, i am 13. The thing is there are a bunch of grumpy old men there who always try to figure out a reason why something cant’ work. I have a couple of friends my age who help in the trains with me during the weekends to load and unload people, take tickets, pass out snacks, annswer questions and such. They think its a good idea. It would be for cancer reseaarch, Should i go ahead and suggest it and present my idea to the board and other members? Other input would be greatly apperciated on how i could get it organized.

Try this:
There are many different types of cancer. That has made finding a cure very difficult. More men die from Lung Cancer than any other type of cancer. Colon Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Leukemia are the next four leading causes of cancer-related deaths for men. But more men die from Lung Cancer than from ALL of the next four types of cancer. That is why the study of Lung Cancer is so important.
