What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
Question by : What is the risk to cancer (oncology) nurses from working with dangerous chemotherapy drugs?
What is the risk to nurses working in the cancer field (oncology) due to their proximity to cancer causing drugs and radiation and chemotherapy? I am hearing stories of many oncology nurses loosing their hair?
Best answer:
Answer by Don’t Call Me Crazy
Cancer causing drugs? I’m sure you mean drugs used in treating cancer. You can check the Material Safety Data Sheet (they should be on file in human resources with the occupational safety representative) to determine the risk of exposure to those chemicals or chemical compounds. As far as exposure to radiation? There is a test to determine whether you have been exposed to radiation and to what degree, though I doubt it would be necessary as long as established procedures are followed at the hospital.

(Part 1 of 3): www.youtube.com Treating the Flu (Part 3 of 3): www.youtube.com TRANSCRIPT EXCERPT: Symptoms of the Flu Often, symptoms of the flu are mistaken for those of the common cold. But unlike a cold, the flu typically causes a fever ranging from 101 to 106 degree F, which can last from a day to about a week. The symptoms of the flu are more severe than those of a cold and can include: Chills and sweats Headache Dry or “hacking” cough Sore throat Muscle aches and pains Fatigue and weakness Loss of appetite Children with the flu tend to develop higher fevers than adults – often 103 to 105oF – and may also experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In adults, however, the flu typically doesn’t affect the gastrointestinal, or GI, tract and thus tends not to cause these symptoms. In children, croup and ear infections may also occur. The flu can cause serious complications, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. Some people may experience more severe flu symptoms and should see a doctor immediately. These symptoms include: Shortness of breath Frequent vomiting Confusion Dizziness In children under the age of two, if the following symptoms occur, a doctor should be contacted immediately: Rapid breathing Unusual eating and drinking Irritability High fever or rash Blush tint to the skin and lips Risk Factors for the Flu Although everyone is at risk for the flu, the following groups …

Q&A: HPV testing, high- risk forms and link to different types of cancer?
Question by : HPV testing, high- risk forms and link to different types of cancer?
If the person have high-risk forms of HPV ( that cause cervical cancer or genital warts ) Can this rise the risk of other type of cancers? Can you take some type of tests and what kind ,for other types cancer bace on the high- risk forms or HP?
Best answer:
Answer by tarnishedsilverheart
High risk genital HPV types are the genital HPV types that are found in genital cancers. Genital HPV types are found in virtually all cervical cancer. Other genital cancers that are linked to HPV are vaginal, anal, vulva, penile, and oral cancers. These ‘other’ cancers have other links and risk factors.
I am unsure what other cancers you are thinking of. There is no overall HPV test. HPV testing is approved only for the cervix. HPV is not found in the blood.
Most genital high risk HPV types do not progress to any cancers due to the diligent recommendation of our Pap test. Pap tests allow our doctor to see cell changes early, monitor these cell changes, and if these cell changes progress the can recommend a treatment preventing most all cervical cancers. It usually takes years before the virus progress to cancer.

lung cancer risk at 27 yrs old?
Question by weenett: lung cancer risk at 27 yrs old?
I have been suffering for burning chest and pain and upper back pain also feels like my lungs are burning for around a yr the 1st time doc said pleurisy and 2nd time he said i had hurt my back muscles. i do smoke around 15 -20 cigarettes ad day for around 11 years, the pain generally gets worse the further the day goes on i/e the more i smoke. bad i know (no lectures please) i have no other symptoms of cancer maybe slight fatigue but i have a job and a toddler nothing extreme and i have gained around 14 lbs in the last 8 -9 months. i have no regular ongoing cough or anything i do have night sweats but i am also taking sertraline daily for anxiety which i believe the sweats are linked to.
I am terrified of lung cancer and i know it’s commonly diagnosed later in life but i have read of a few younger cases. I am intending seeing my doc again, but i am worried sick of cancer until then. i had bloods done for tiredness around 3 months ago and thyroid levels and blood count ect were all normal also had a fbc. which were all fine.
anyone please help what are my chances, please no scare stories!!!
i am female and 27 years old
I also wondered abt the possibility of fibromyalgia???
oh and i know smoking is terrible and it greatly reduces health and life span but i interned to quit and if it was that easy i would of given up years ago so please no sarcastic answers abt this!!!
many thanks
thanks sardi!!!! as for the person belowdidn’t u read the question i am seeing my doc!!! and i do intend to go back!!!!!!

Answer by Sardiamo
It could definitely be fibromyalgia, which can take forever for your doctor to diagnose. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago after about 2 years of tests to rule out everything else. I’m also a smoker and I understand you not wanting ppl to answer sarcastically, which I’m sure some ahole will, like it’s that easy to just drop the habit! I’m sorry you are going through this. It’s the worst feeling to not know what’s going on. Try Googling fibromyalgia and read up on the symptoms. It’s a very good possibility if you have ruled out other things. I’m sure if it was cancer, your doc would have had some type of indication by now. Take care!

Q&A: Increased cancer risk for several CAT scans?
Question by Kellie S: Increased cancer risk for several CAT scans?
I am 32 yrs. old. I have had 2 abdominal CAT scans this year. Over the last 5 years I have had 3 more. Thank goodness they have not found anything wrong (I have abdominal pain and this is the test that the doc usually recommends that I get). I have been reading all of the information on CAT scans. I never really questioned my doc until now. I am scarred that the test that they were using to diagnose something is going to hurt me in the long run. I have a very high rate of cancer in my family. My dad and sister have died from, both had lyposarcomas and dad had lung cancer. I do not plan on getting anymore of these test unless it is extremely necessary. Should I be concerned. I have enough to worry about as it is, this doesn’t help.

detected in 1958 by Johanson ? and since then there have been 10 studies confirming the link. Is it the same with the cause of non-familial autism?
Would a public health campaign like the one linking smoking and lung cancer be a good idea to decrease the risk of autism and schizophrenia? 35 was recently found to be the age in which all studies agree risk was over statistically significantly over 1.

It does not sell drugs to prevent the devastating neurological diseases so you have to do your own research and not expect them to tell you how autism can be prevented.

Q&A: Does a child with stage 4 Wilms Cancer have a higher risk of relapse than one with stages 1,2 &3?
Question by lil Darling: Does a child with stage 4 Wilms Cancer have a higher risk of relapse than one with stages 1,2 &3?
Stage 4 favorable Wilms Tumor-My daughter has been in remission for six months but the fear of relapse is never far from my mind. Please don’t sugar coat any thing I just want a straight answer. Her cancer tumor had taken over her right kidney and had also spread to her lungs. She had the tumor removed along with right kidney. Treatment was 6 months of chemo and 8 radiation treatments. I know all kids a different but I just would like to know some statistics.
Thanks
Best answer:
Answer by JD
Stage IV Wilms’ tumor is defined as the presence of hematogenous metastases (lung, liver, bone, or brain), or lymph node metastases outside the abdomenopelvic region.
Treatment: Nephrectomy + abdominal radiation + 24 weeks of chemotherapy + radiation of metastatic site as appropriate
Outcome: 90% 4-year , 17% 4-year survival if anaplastic. If she is in remission now and they have removed all the cancer, chances are good for no relapse since the kidney was removed. but like you said all kids are different. with the proper treatment there is a 90% chance of no remission. As for the other stages the chance of no remission is from 95-98%. I hope this helps and hope everything goes well and sorry to hear you have to go through this. have been in the medical field for some time and its always hard with children.

Q&A: Risk of lung cancer?
Question by exposions: Risk of lung cancer?
Hi, I am 18 years old and have had a cough for about two and a half weeks. During the first two weeks it was a dry cough and I had little to now pain in my chest. However, during the half of a week following I started to get pains in my chest and upper abdomen, mostly on the left side. I went to the doctor and he said that he thought it was a bacterial infection, although my lungs sounded clear. He prescribed me azithromycn(sp?) and I have been taking that. Since taking it, my cough has died down but I still have the pains in my chest. My question is, does this make lung cancer a strong possibility?
The reason I ask is because between the ages of 15-16 I smoked for a little while. Never much, I don’t believe in that time I ever exceded 10 entire packs total. Nonetheless, it is still smoking. I haven’t smoked regularly for about a year and half though. Does this make cancer a likely possibility?
I also have really bad acid reflux Could these pains just be a symptom of that insead?
Best answer:
Answer by yahooanswerdude
i guess its just asthma or a bacterial infection. but to really play safe, get an x-ray, it which show patches where tumurous cells have developed. better safe than sorry and get the trouble off ur mind. i personally don’t think 10 packs in a lifetime is that many, but still it is a considerable amount. by the way, u don’t want to get x-rays too often because they can aggravate cancer.smoking causes other lung complications besides lung cancer itself. causes heart disease, mouth cancer too.
good luck dude.

Study:
Fellatio may significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women
Thursday, October 2, 2003 Posted: 9:19 AM EDT (1319 GMT)
(AP) — Women who perform the act of fellatio and swallow semen on a regular basis, one to two times a week, may reduce their risk of breast cancer by up to 40 percent, a North Carolina State University study found.
Doctors had never suspected a link between the act of fellatio and breast cancer, but new research being performed at North Carolina State University is starting to suggest that there could be an important link between the two.
In a study of over 15,000 women suspected of having performed regular fellatio and swallowed the ejaculatory fluid, over the past ten years, the researchers found that those actually having performed the act regularly, one to two times a week, had a lower occurrence of breast cancer than those who had not. There was no increased risk, however, for those who did not regularly perform.
“I think it removes the last shade of doubt that fellatio is actually a healthy act,” said Dr. A.J. Kramer of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research. “I am surprised by these findings, but am also excited that the researchers may have discovered a relatively easy way to lower the occurrence of breast cancer in women.”
The University researchers stressed that, though breast cancer is relatively uncommon, any steps taken to reduce the risk would be a wise decision.
“Only with regular occurrence will your chances be reduced, so I encourage all women out there to make fellatio an important part of their daily routine,” said Dr.. Helena Shifteer, one of the researchers at the University. “Since the emergence of the research, I try to fellate at least once every other night to reduce my chances.”
The study is reported in Friday’s Journal of Medical Research.
In 1991, 43,582 women died of breast cancer, as reported by the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Len Lictepeen, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, said women should not overlook or “play down” these findings.
“This will hopefully change women’s practice and patterns, resulting in a severe drop in the future number of cases,” Lictepeen said.
Sooner said the research shows no increase in the risk of breast cancer in those who are, for whatever reason, not able to fellate regularly.
“There’s definitely fertile ground for more research. Many have stepped forward to volunteer for related research now in the planning stages,” he said.
Almost every woman is, at some point, going to perform the act of fellatio, but it is the frequency at which this event occurs that makes the difference, say researchers. Also key seems to be the protein and enzyme count in the semen, but researchers are again waiting for more test data.
The reasearch consisted of two groups, 6,246 women ages 25 to 45 who had performed fellatio and swallowed on a regular basis over the past five to ten years, and 9,728 women who had not or did not swallow. The group of women who had performed and swallowed had a breast cancer rate of 1.9 percent and the group who had not had a breast cancer rate of 10.4 percent.
“The findings do suggest that there are other causes for breast cancer besides the absence of regular fellatio,” Shafteer said. “It’s a cause, not THE cause.”

Q&A: Do I have a high risk of getting cancer?
Question by girl.: Do I have a high risk of getting cancer?
Hi I am a 19 year old female and I am just wondering do I have an increased risk of getting cancer if I have a family history of it?
Although I have had no immediate family with cancer I have had a number of great aunts and uncles die from the following cancers:
womb cancer
stomach cancer
lung cancer
throat cancer
all of these members of my family who have died from these cancers are all my grandmothers brothers and sisters on my mother’s side.
My grandfather on my fathers side also died from bowel cancer.
I’ve also had two second cousins die within the last few months of throat cancer and liver cancer ( on my mother’s side).
I would like to know so I can be aware of any problems I may encounter in the future and to look out for certain symptoms as I get older. I use to smoke ocasionally but I don’t anymore and I would have a drink every few weeks. I also suffer from PCOS.
Would I have an increased risk of getting cancer throughout my life because of this and because of my family history?

What is my risk of getting breast cancer?
Question by Sarah: What is my risk of getting breast cancer?
My maternal grandmother battled cancer multiple times in her life, before dying in 2004. She had breast cancer when my mother was a teenager I believe, and battled through it, although she may have had a masectomy. The cancer came back when she was in her 60′s or 70′s in her lungs (not sure if anywhere else…. I was young) and she died of that.
My paternal grandmother had gotten diagnosed with breast cancer when my father was around my age (I am nearly 16). She had both of her breasts removed, went through treatment, and the only cancer problems she has had since have been some skin lesions on her face.
Now, last week, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It is not a bad one, in fact, it is one of the “best” cancers to get in that area. She is scheduled to have the bad area removed in about three weeks, and will begin radiation after that for a few weeks.
I just want to know what my chances of getting this disease are, and what I can do to prevent it. Because all these women are strong women, but this disease takes a toll on everybody, and I don’t know if I could handle going through that with myself.

It sounds like breast cancer on your mother’s side of the family is hereditary, but it may have been just coincidence on your father’s side. What you should do, is talk to your doctor about your personal risk of getting breast cancer, potentially set up more frequent mammograms, since you appear to be at a higher risk than normal for breast cancer.
It may be hereditary, or just one big ole coincidence, but you should still see your doctor as soon as possible to determine your risk.
Yahoo answers can’t give you a definite answer about something this serious. I will be praying for you and your mother. Take care.

or what if the individual has a unknown liver condition that prevents the XANAX from clearing the persons body will the anti-whatever be able to save the person?
0.5mg of Xanax btw
Best answer:
Answer by honhill
That tiny dosage would be EXTREMELY unlikely to harm anyone. If a person had a lung or liver disorder it would have to be severe for the person to be unable to tolerate that small dosage of Xanax. Xanax clears the body very quickly, the drug’s effects are gone in a matter of hours, it is completely excreted after several more. If you are a hypochondriac, then please don’t worry. This is seriously nothing to worry about, especially if the drug was prescribed for you.
