Lung cancer / pet scan?
Question by : Lung cancer / pet scan?
I had a pet scan done one year ago and it was fine (had it to check a spot on my lung that I have had for years.) For the past 5 weeks ever since I started exercising, my chest and lungs have been hurting off and on. Not just during exercise. But also when I get stressed and it will sometimes last for minutes and sometimes days (although not intense). So my question is…would it be possible for lung cancer to grow so fast that it gives me actual discomfort when just a year ago I got a good test result?
Im 30 years old and haven’t smoked in a couple years. The spot I got checked was just a granuloma, which I have had for at least 10 years. It can not turn into cancer.

Answer by formerly_bob
If the pain were actually caused by cancer, it would have to be a cancer that developed in the past year. It seems unlikely that cancer would spread sufficiently in one year and cause only one symptom. It is possible the granuloma itself is causing pain. Deeper and more rapid breathing from exercise could be enough of an increase in lung movement that the granuloma may be causing irritation by physically rubbing against some part of the lung or chest lining.
Pay closer attention to the nature of the pain and then check with your doc. Try to figure out if it is occurring in the chest muscles, the airways, or deep within the chest. Note whether the pain changes when you take a very deep breath or breath out forcefully, whether it is worse when inhaling or exhaling, and if the pain also is accompanied by breathing difficulty.

I am allergic to iodine/shellfish. I had a CT scan with dye back in Sept. Could this cause longterm illness?
Question by heatherjohnson911: I am allergic to iodine/shellfish. I had a CT scan with dye back in Sept. Could this cause longterm illness?
I WENT TO A LOCAL ER BACK IN SEPT.BECAUSE I HAD CHEST PAINS AND WHAT APPEARED TO BE HEARTBURN. I WAS ADMITTED AND GIVEN NUMEROUS TESTS TO LOCATE THE CAUSE OF THIS AILMENT. I WAS GIVEN A CT-SCAN WITH DYE AT THAT TIME. PRIOR TO THIS TEST I WASN’T ASKED ABOUT ANY ALLERGIES TO SHELLFISH OR IODINE. RESULTS SHOWED AN UNKNOWN MASS NEAR MY LUNG. I AM STIL SEEING DOCTORS FOR DETERMINATION OF MASS. HOWEVER SINCE BEING RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL, I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING NUMEROUS SYMPTOMS. FATIQUE, A RASH ALL OVER MY BODY AND WEAKNESS BEING THE MOST PROMINENT OF THEM. I AM SCHEDULED FOR ANOTHER CT-SCAN NEXT WEEK AND WAS ASKED BY THE TECHNICIAN ABOUT MY ALLERGIES TO SHELLFISH AND IODINE. NOW I AM WORRIED BECAUSE I WASNT ASKED THIS IN THE HOSPITAL. COULD THESE SYMPTOMS BE RELATED TO THE CONTRAST I WAS ADMINISTERED DURING MY LAST CTSCAN?
Best answer:
Answer by midnightmoon62
First, knock off the caps, its hard to read.
Scond, with those allergies, you should KNOW that you NEED to report this, whether they ask you or not. A lot of meds conain iodine, not just the contrast.
I dont know that a reaction from sept would still be bothering you now, but it is worth mentioning to the doc.
However, being that the test saw a mass, it is poss the mass is cancer and this is the effects of the cancer.

Q&A: CT Scan risk in Cancer Patients?
Question by P C: CT Scan risk in Cancer Patients?
I was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer and the cancer has spread to my lymph node. I had several blood tests that show no sign of blood/liver/bone cancer.
I also had a chest Xray, which shows no sign of abnormalities. The doctor does not recommend a CT scan of my torso because it can give hundred times of radiation, which can cause cancer. Does anyone recommend a CT/PET scan? or MRI?
Can an xray show very small tumors?
I am otherwise healthy and have no symptoms of illness.
Thank you for your help.
Best answer:
Answer by Panda
No, an xray will not show very small tumors . . but than again neither will a CT . . it is possible that an MRI or PET may pick up the presence of metastasis.
Not really sure what you are asking here . . if your cancer has already spread than it is far better to find out where it is as soon as possible and treat it immediately . . a CT or PET can give you that information. I have no idea why your doctor is discouraging a CT scan . . but I would suggest a second opinion if your doctor is not an oncologist. Far better to risk a CT than it is to take a chance that the cancer has not spread throughout your body. The information from the CT will be valuable . . whereas if you do not have one and cancer is present and continues to spread . . it could be fatal. There is no room for error when you are dealing with cancer.

Having enlarged lymph nodes does not mean you have cancer.
And if you did have cancer there are no specific types as most of them can involve any part of the body.

Is it “normal” to get a biopsy because a CT scan showed something suspicious, without any other tests/scans?
Question by Yvonne: Is it “normal” to get a biopsy because a CT scan showed something suspicious, without any other tests/scans?
I don’t know the whole story but this is what I’ve gathered. My step mom had uterine cancer about 10 years ago (before she met my dad) and had a complete hysterectomy. Last year they found it had spread to her lymph nodes in her groin area. She was on chemo for a while and was taken off of it, with scans and blood work every 3 months to monitor it. Apparently they found a suspicious spot on her lung a little while ago through a CT scan and it’s still there so she is scheduled for another CT scan and biopsy next week.
My mom has been fighting breast cancer and mets for 13 years now and I know it’s different but anytime my mom’s cancer spread she had a CT that originally found it, then a PET scan to look further and then an MRI and/or bone scan before any biopsies were done.
Do treatment plans normally vary like this?
Best answer:
Answer by ChemoAngel
VERY Normal. Yes, treatment plans vary A Lot….It is completely up to the doctor who is treating her.

my dad had a ct scan and there was a mass on his lung, can scar tissue show up as a mass.?
Question by menmy2: my dad had a ct scan and there was a mass on his lung, can scar tissue show up as a mass.?
my dad had an xray and they found a spot on his lung. So he was sent for a cat scan. They found a mass and now he has to have a biopsy. I was wondering if scar tissue can look like a mass on a cat scan OR would they be able to tell scar tissue on the scan. do they already presume its cancer? my dad has had two open heart surgeries so i am hoping this is just scar tissue but we are VERY worried
Best answer:
Answer by TKS
Scar tissue could show up as a mass. It would depend on where they saw the mass whether they could rule out that it was from the surgery. A biopsy is the safest way to go, although it may be painful.

Q&A: what is a ct chest scan with contrast mean? and what could they be looking for?
Question by J N003: what is a ct chest scan with contrast mean? and what could they be looking for?
Help??
My mum went for a 2nd chest x-ray this week as they said the first x-ray showed a slight shadowing on her lung. Today we have a received a letter stating she needs a ct chest scan with contrast? Im very very scared as the letter was dated the same day as her actual 2nd scan, so there seems to be some urgency there? Its booked for 9days time. Im scared as well as i only lost my dad to bladder cancer 3months ago and my mum is still suffering badly from this event too, i haven’t got the heart to tell her about this letter as im sure the panic and worry of it would kill her! She’s in her 80′s with alot of other medical complications too, i’m so worried, does it mean she could have the ‘c’ word? Sh’s been suffering with a cough since my father died that will not go away and also she is short of breath, sometimes her cough can be quite mucusy? but it mainly feels like an irratated tickle? She doesn’t have COPD or pneumonia? well, im not sure now to be honest, im just hoping and praying it’s not cancer!
Best answer:
Answer by formerly_bob
A shadow on a chest x-ray, cough that lasts more than 4 weeks, and shortness of breath could be caused by pneumonia. The shadow could also be some type of cancer or other lung problem. You can just tell your grandmother that the doc needs to get a more detailed x-ray of the lung to figure out if she has a lung infection or some other type of problem.

I had a CAT scan in december? and i was wondering. If i had breast cancer would it show up on a CAT scan of the heart and/or lungs?
I dont think it was very recent… I first thought i might have it like 2 years ago… but never went to the doctor or anything.

Answer by notalonewithcancer
I have frequent CT scans due to my lung cancer. A couple of years ago, a suspicious shadow was seen on one of my breasts so was sent for a mammogram.. luckily it came back negative. So I would say a mammo would be more accurate than a CT scan for early detection of breast cancer.

Ct scan showed spots on lungs?
Question by : Ct scan showed spots on lungs?
I recently went for my annual ct scan and it showed spots on my lungs, not masses. The doctor said it could be an infection or damage from radiation. I didn’t think much of it. But I’ve noticed that I’ve been having trouble breathing at times and feeling like I can’t breathe. What could these spots be?

Question by susannafew: I had a ct scan today and on the doctors orders it said LLL Opacity for the diagnosis. What is that?
I have been having a lot of colds lately and my doctor sent me to have a chest x-ray last week. Yesterday they called and said that they didn’t like what they saw on it and wanted me to have a ct scan. So I went to the hospital this morning and had the ct scan done. I was looking on the doctors orders and the diagnosis said LLL Opacity. I looked online and all I could find is case studies of bronchoalveolar carcinoma. I am totally confussed. Is this lung cancer or not. If so is it treatable? I am only 28 and I have a wonderfull husband and 2 beautiful little girls and I can’t leave them. If you have any answers I would really appreciate it.

Your heart is fine. They found a non calcified nodule in upper lobe which they will check again in a year. The doctor does not think this is anything serious but to be on the safe side he will check it again in a year to see if there have been any changes. Relax………you are ok!

The dr. wants me to get it checked out right away. I am freaking out! This is the third time within the last 4 months that I have been told I need to get checked for cancer(everything so far has come back begnin) what are the chances that it could be cancer?
Best answer:
Answer by gracelyn
There are differnt things that can cause lung nodules, but cancer is pretty high up. What is your history? Do you smoke, is there a family history? What were the other sites that you had to have checked out? Are you exposed to things like chemicals or (of all things) straw or hay (carry fungus).
There is no way to tell until the tests are done.
Check the link below, too, maybe helpful.
Good luck. Hope this one is benign, too.

Question by sulfuricfire: after cancer surgery i had 2 clear pet scans.nw after 5 yrs the pet scan is abnormal.what can be the reason?
It was SCC of buccal mucosa in mouth.all the tumor was reported to be remoeved in surgery. the 2 previous pet scans were clear. the 3rd pet scan after 5 yrs of surgery is showing some metabolic activity.can it be benign or is it malignant?
Best answer:
Answer by Huggy
The only way to find the answer to that is to have the oncologist check. They can say all tumors are removed, but some growth is so tiny it doesn’t even show on a PET scan (or CT or MRI). Sometimes things lie dormant and kick back up due to some other source of infection. Just because it’s showing activity doesn’t mean it’s benign or malignant. Do the smart thing and have the oncologist take care of it. It’s not worth the risk. I know – I’ve been fighting anal cancer that has metastasized throughout my body. I had a scan that showed all of the edges were clear in my pelvic area, meaning they got it all, but it’s back in my pelvic region, too.

Q&A: why would they be doing a PET scan and what is it?
Question by : why would they be doing a PET scan and what is it?
my grandfather has had emphysema for almost 12 years now and has been in and out of the hospital with pneumonia many many times over the years. About a month ago he broke 4 vertebrae in his back due to his meds weakening his bones. this is the second time he has broken them. about 2 weeks ago they did a chyphoplasty and we slipped getting out of the computer chair and was in a lot of pain so they took him back to the hospital. They did a MRI and x-ray and thought it was pneumonia again, so they started treating him for pneumonia. the same day the his pulmologist said it was not pneumonia but a mass that started to grow so he ordered a PET scan. I researched a PET scan and have a general idea what it is used for but why in his situation are they using it? do they think it could be cancer? He only has about 7-10 percent of his lung capacity left according to his pulmonary doctor and has been on 4 liters of oxygen for about 8 years now. I am worrying more so now this time and i am trying to get some feedback. My grandmother is still at the hospital with him and when i called the room the phone went to nurses station and they said that he was not available to talk. Well he never really can talk because he runs out of breath to easy but the phone always rings to the room and my grandmother answers. sorry for my misspellings with the medical terminology as i am not familiar with much of it.
your answer is pretty offensive. I live 580 miles from them as i just moved to PA. He does not have a social worker as he is a retired naval officer and has insurance through the VA. your suggestion that he is on state aid is offensive. I can not speak with the RN because they will not give information over the phone. ( patient confidentiality). As far as a liason for his care does not exsist as they are the only ones who live in maine from our family. i simply posted this question to get a little relief while i sit 580 miles away wondering whats going on. The fact you suggested that i called the hospital numerous times that i could affect his health offends me. I moved to maine for 3 years to help take care of him and to help my grandmother with his care. I am very familiar with him needing his rest to recooperate. I only called the hospital ONE time the entire time he was in there because my grandmother always emailed or called me to keep me updated since i live in pa now. When i liv
when i lived in maine i would visit him every day at the hospital to check in on him and see how he was doing. Which involved sitting in a chair watching him struggle for air. I posted this question to get a little relief while i waited to get an update. Would someone not so ignorant answer my question please.
Best answer:
Answer by nancy jo
the CT, MR, and xray are not showing the full extent of the mass. meet with the doctor and RN to have your questions answered. work with your grandpa’s social worker/case manager -he needs to get his affairs in order. stop calling the hospital -it’s very difficult to rest and heal when the phone rings incessantly. have one person designated liaison for family & friends -that person can make and receive calls for the patient’s updates.

Chest CT scan question please help!!?
Question by Bags: Chest CT scan question please help!!?
2 years ago I had some breathing difficulties and my Dr. suggesting I undergo testing for asthma related issues. Since I had a slight heaviness and pain when I would take a deep breath it was recommended to have a CT scan. Well they had found a “nodule” 1-2 mm in width and 5 mm in length consistent with a scar. Upon finding that they did many tests to make sure it was not cancerous. They recommended to have a CT scan done every year to make sure it does not change or get bigger. Well 2 years later this nodule has not changed which is great! However it is dicovered that I have a “small amount of soft tissue in the anterior mediastinum probably representing residual thymic tissue. “A very small thymoma is not excludable.” 6-month follow up scan may be appropriate. ” This lesion measures about 1.8×1.4 cm. Any Dr’s out there have any ideas….of course I followed up with my Pulmonary DR. but I just wanted some additional help. Thanks I am very frustrated and angry about this.
Best answer:
Answer by lcoil79
You don’t say how old you are. The thymus gland is present in children and is integral in forming the immune system when we are young. As our immune systems mature, the thymus gland is absorbed by the body and will usually disappear, however some adults will retain a small amount of this tissue. The 6 month follow-up is going to be along the same lines as for your nodule, just to make sure it doesn’t get larger. Because of the location of the thymus, surrounded by very important large arteries, most doctors are unwilling to biopsy it without definite need to do so. Hope this helps.
