What should I major in in Graduate School if I want to invent cures against diseases like AIDS and cancer?
Question by : What should I major in in Graduate School if I want to invent cures against diseases like AIDS and cancer?
Is it molecular biology?
I am sort of debating between molecular biology, biological engineering and chemical engineering. I don’t know which one to choose!

Answer by KamboKid
Drug discovery is a broad field. Depend on what role you like to play in that process, you cold study chemistry, molecular biology or immunology. If you want to see how the drugs interact with the body you can study pharmacology or biology.
There’s a lot of overlap.

Have you known anyone undergoing chemotherapy and going to school at the same time?
Question by House: Have you known anyone undergoing chemotherapy and going to school at the same time?
Have you know anyone undergoing chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer specifically and going to college. If you have examples that would be good. How where their/your grades, motivation, etc.?
I am also talking about college or university, not exactly high school.
Best answer:
Answer by Tarkarri
This would depend on the type of chemo and the side effects experienced.
In many cases there would be no problem with this, in others it would be difficult.
I was working throughout my chemo and radiation.
One sister worked throughout her chemo (as a teacher)
My brother was unable to work due to side effects.
Every patient is different. (my brother & I had same chemo starting within weeks of each other).

Q&A: are high school research experiences relevant to medical schools?
Question by ASstar: are high school research experiences relevant to medical schools?
I worked at a lab at the national cancer institute for three summers and one full school year during my senior year of high school. two of the summers were during the summer before senior year and the summer before I entered college. The last summer is during the summer after my freshman year of college. I plan to apply to a primary care medical school but wanted to have some research under my belt (but I want to stop research now). Will these high school reserach experiences count when applying to medical school? I worked at the same lab.
Best answer:
Answer by HT
For any graduate or professional school, they want to see how you build upon your experiences from your first or second year of college (rarely high school years). You should include it on your resume without a doubt. Undergrad school is meant to raise the bar by doing more complex and influential research since you are much smarter in college than high school. Then again, you can get into medical school without a bunch of research experience.

How do I convince my daughter to go back to school after having 2 severe illnesses?
Question by Sugar: How do I convince my daughter to go back to school after having 2 severe illnesses?
My daughter is 7 years old and is in Grade 2. She has been in school systems since she was 3. She has ALWAYS loved school. She is an A student and barely misses any days from school. Her Grade 1 year she only missed 3 days that whole year. But this year she has become very ill. She started with regular colds in September that she didn’t take time off of school for, but 2 weeks before Christmas she caught a gastro flu and she ended up in the ER after a week of the illness going away. She was fine after that and went back to school. She made it through the Christmas holidays with nothig, but she became sick after only one week back to school. This time she had a respitory illness (most likely H2N3?). She had a very high fever and 3 different docs at a clinic didn’t want to give her antibiotics. They did xrays, but the doctor couldn’t see the white spot that I seen on her lung. I brought her back 2 days later to be told that a radiologist looked at the xray and diagnosed pneumonia and ear infection. She missed nearly 2 weeks of school. I brought her back this past Monday, she came home crying that there are sick kids still in class and she frightened that she is going to catch something else. I feel the same, but I try play down that she will catch anything else. I can’t blame her for being so scared, but today she fought me all the way to the school and the secretary and to drag her to class. Never in 4 years have I seen her so upset. She won’t eat her lunch and snack for her anxiety is so high that she can’t eat. I don’t know what to do to calm her, I seriously have tried everything. Is there more to this than just scared of flu’s? Does my child suffer with anxiety. I know her father’s mother had/has severe anxiety. She is scared to leave the house. Is it genetic? My daughter is begging me not to take her to school tomorrow and give a day of rest at home. I know she has fully not recovered from the pneumonia, but I believe is will enough to go to school. Than she told me she just simply “hates school”. This is so not like my daughter, she loves school. I want to keep her home tomorrow, but I’m afraid now that the school knows that she is feeling like this that they may just call children’s aid thinking that something must be going on at home. I want to get into see her doctor but it takes a week for in. What can I do for her? Does she need therapy for her fears? Please help!
We live in Ontario where there has been an outbreak of viruses. She has missed 3.5 weeks of school in 6 weeks, so taking her out of school for another 2 weeks is not an option. She is also only 7. She seems to be more traumatized by her severe illnesses and is fearing that she may become ill again. She went back on Monday and Tuesday, and is more scared because the kids in her class are coughing and one is coughing so much that he has almost vomited several times. I am more concerned at our school system. Why would a school allow any child to come to school when they are so obviously sick and contagious? Almost every child in my daughters class has been sick. They just keep passing it to each other. Some of these recent flu’s are killing people, so I feel it should be taken more seriously. Parents are sending their children to school when they are ill and giving it to other children. Some children are getting beyond sick., like my daughter. So I feel that my child has been a

Question by : In about 1999 *around then* I was going to a special school for deaf and blind kids.?
It was a residential school. They found asbestos in the dorms, so we had to stay in a different building til they cleaned it all out. When I returned to my dorm room, I found this white powder on my belongings…like my little cart I had stuff in. Do you think it was asbestos that I touched??
it was white gritty, powdery stuff.
Best answer:
Answer by Angela M
I doubt it; probably sawdust, sanding dust, or even regular ole dust. The folks who remove asbestos are required by the EPA to remove the dust along with the asbestos. Touching asbestos won’t hurt you; only inhaling it.

Q&A: Is it cancer? I am an 11 year old school girl who has only had surgery on the left side of my abdomin.?
Question by : Is it cancer? I am an 11 year old school girl who has only had surgery on the left side of my abdomin.?
I have had a cacerous tumor on my adrenal gland around 2 years old but it has been cured and removed. Now i am freaking out because i have this thing that is hard and not moveable in my leg. I have read Lump, growth, tumor? of a woman who had a likeliness to my case and it was oestochodroma but unlike her and other patients with this tumor i have had no surgery on my leg. I have had scrapes and cuts but nothing that i have ever needed medical help. It has sat in my leg for around 2 years. You can’t see it unless you bend the skin to show it and it is easy to feel but hurts when touched. Now 1 of my brothers had a rare cancer when he was 18 months but he’s ok now. More recaintly my eldest brother around 20 or so has been diagnosed with desmoplastic sarcoma and not in too good of a position and has a couple years at most. I am afraid that my mother and father had only 4 kids and 3 diagnosed with cancer or in my case a cancerous tumor. If I do end up having another cancerous tumor I’ll most likely have low chances since it is the size of a dime growing inward with little pain but it has been there for two years! Please help!

Hi Heaven,Oh my, you have certainly been through a lot for your age.I’m curious…if this lump has been there for two years already, has any doctor seen it and evaluated it? If not, it should be seen. It’s quite probable that it’s nothing, but since you have a history of cancer, and you’ve got a strong family history of cancer, ANY unexplained lump should be evaluated. But I do want to reassure you that even if, God forbid, it turns out to be cancer, there are many very effective treatments nowadays. And it’s quite possible to survive more than one type…I know, because I’ve survived two different types. Ask your parents to take you to the doctor and have the lump evaluated. Good luck, and I will be thinking of you. Please write back and let us know what happens when you see the doctor.

Why the H— are you YELLING at us! Very hard to read.
The cell tower transmission is not 20 feet from your kids – it is 150+ feet. And cell towers are very low power to keep their signals within the limits of the cells.
The cell phone you gave your kids or that you carry probably has more radiation power because it is so close to your/their body – but I don’t believe it is a real risk either.
Smoking was never safe.

Should my mom file a complaint to the school?
Question by : Should my mom file a complaint to the school?
I found out today that someone in the school has an MRSA infection. (skin disease that eats away at the skin, causes gangrene, and eventually can/will kill you) and it has spread throughout the entire weightroom/possibly school. Yes, I’m dead serious.
Besides the fact our school has hoards of mice and cockroaches, and as we breathe in mold and asbestos infestations…oh, and the signs warning us of hazardous chemicals not listed…..but our pe teacher is just making us wash our hands and wipe our hands with sanitary wipes after we are done using the pe equipment. I find this ridiculous that this is the only thing he is making us do. I know darn good and well there will dirtbag kids that wont wash their hands because they are too lazy and then the whole school will be spread with infection.
Won’t the school end up condemned? Should my mom file a complaint to keep me out of pe? The pe basement is always kept at 90 degrees F (which is also disgusting that we don’t have air conditioning). I go to a shithole for a high school!

Not only file a complaint but get her child out of that school!!! File a federal complaint, and involve the media! This needs to go public!!!
