Seattle Doctor Paints Miniature Pumpkin Using da Vinci Robot
Kristen Austin, OB/GYN (obstetrics and gynecology) physician in Issaquah, Wash. paints a Jack-O-Lantern on a miniature pumpkin using the da Vinci robot to demonstrate how this device gives surgeons greater surgical precision and dexterity over existing approaches. Robot-assisted surgery can offer patients significant benefits over traditional approaches, including less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, faster recovery time and quicker return to normal daily activities. In November 2011, Swedish opens the first full-service hospital to be built in King County, Wash. In nearly 40 years. The hospital will offer da Vinci robot-assisted surgical services at the campus. This is one of six robots within Swedish’s health care system. Swedish is a leader in robot-assisted surgical procedures. Its program has a longstanding, successful track record of performing more prostate, kidney and gynecologic surgeries than any other medical center in the Pacific Northwest region of the US Swedish uses the da Vinci Surgical System to perform minimally invasive urological, gynecological and thoracic surgeries for diseases such as prostate cancer, kidney cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer, and to assist in complex gynecologic reconstruction surgeries. Q&A: What are the top five IP law firms in the Seattle area to work as a biotech patent agent?
Question by Handsome Devil: What are the top five IP law firms in the Seattle area to work as a biotech patent agent?
I am looking to relocate to the west coast and am investigating Seattle and various California cities. I am a registered patent agent (4 yrs ago) with a BS in biochemistry, and a very strong background in sequence listings and sequence searching. I have worked for an international bioinformatics company. I am currently working as an IP legal assistant for attorneys for a large Boston law firm and thus am quite familiar with patent prosecution. I am looking to do patent work such as sequence listings, sequence searching, sequence analysis, patentability searches (have done those), and patent prosecution.
I am aware Seed is a top firm in this regard.

Heller Ehrman White & McAuliffe (HEWM) in the San Francisco headquarters has a huge IP dept. with many IP attorneys in their other branches (Seattle being one), though not as many. The San Diego branch, though smaller, is made up of a lot of IP attys b/c of the huge biotech boom there. Seattle had more environmental attys than anything (seems to be the trend for the whole state), but still had IP attys there. HEWM is well known as a 1st class firm within all the CA atty’s I’ve talked to, evoking an ooh and ahh about the firm.

Q&A: is anyone familiar with seattle cancer treatment and wellness center?
Question by gardengirl: is anyone familiar with seattle cancer treatment and wellness center?
I am trying to decide where to get treatment and just went for a 2nd opinion for my breast cancer treatment. I am triple negative, and like the naturopathic approach. Has anyone went to them for treatment? What were your results?
Best answer:
Answer by Denisedds
There are no natural remedies that have been proven to do a thing to cancer. However, no hospital in the United States would be allowed to call themselves a cancer treatment center if they relied on naturopathic methods. We practice evidence based medicine in the country and all doctors and hospitals have the same up to date information there isn’t one or two who have or use a special method not used elsewhere. Choose an oncologist you like and trust and who you have good communication with. You are going to have a long relationship with this doctor and rely on him or her for everything. It is important they explain things well and you understand each other as it is the only way you can make good informed decisions. Best wishes.

The Letter
A Seattle judge’s allegations that an attorney with Waters & Kraus in Dallas may have eavesdropped on jury deliberations in an asbestos suit have blocked the firm from practicing in that judge’s court and could affect the firm’s efforts to practice elsewhere.
About two weeks ago, a defendant in a separate asbestos case pending in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Department 42, called the California court’s attention to the concerns that Superior Court Judge Sharon S. Armstrong, chief asbestos judge in King County, Wash., had raised about the alleged actions of Scott L. Frost, of counsel at Waters & Kraus in Dallas, and Mark H. Iola, a partner in Dallas’ Stanley, Mandel & Iola in Lott v. Saberhagen, et al.
Armstrong had notified Waters & Kraus managing partner Peter Kraus in a Dec. 18, 2006, letter that she has asked the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) to investigate whether Frost overheard that the jury had reached a defense verdict in Lott and advised Iola to settle the case.
“It appears that Mr. Frost may have been eavesdropping on the jury deliberations, that he may have overheard the jury’s agreement to a defense verdict, immediately advised Mr. Iola of the jury’s decision, and Mr. Iola then settled the case. If this is true, both Mr. Frost and Mr. Iola engaged in misconduct,” Armstrong wrote in the letter.
Armstrong is unable to comment on the letter, a spokeswoman in the judge’s office says. The spokeswoman says the judge placed the letter in the court file, which made it a public document.
Elementis Chemicals Inc., a defendant in Huff, et al. v. Bondex International Inc., et al., provided a copy of Armstrong’s letter to the Superior Court in Los Angeles County on Dec. 29, 2006. Waters & Kraus had applied for Frost’s admission pro hac vice to represent the plaintiffs in Huff.
Bondex International also was a defendant in Lott, the suit that was in the Seattle court.
William H. “Bill” Armstrong, a partner in Armstrong & Associates in Oakland, Calif., which represents Elementis, says he received e-mail copies of the Seattle judge’s letter from half a dozen sources. Armstrong, who is no relation to Judge Sharon Armstrong, says he believes the judge who was to make a decision about Frost’s pro hac vice application in Huff should know about the allegations.
“Most judges don’t like it if, after they’ve made a decision, they find out there’s something out there that they should have known,” William Armstrong says.
According to Judge Sharon Armstrong’s letter, the jury in Lott was deliberating on Friday, Nov. 17, 2006. Armstrong wrote that her courtroom clerk indicated that Frost had been sitting outside the door to the jury room for about an hour that afternoon and that “at approximately 3:30 p.m. he had leapt up (her expression) and hurried out of the courtroom.” As noted in Armstrong’s letter, the clerk notified Armstrong at about 3:45 p.m. on the same day that the parties were nearing settlement of the case.
Armstrong further noted in her letter that the presiding juror subsequently indicated that the jury had reached a defense verdict at about 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 17 but decided to wait until the following Monday to announce the verdict. Although Frost assured Armstrong that he “had merely heard general noise coming from the jury room,” the judge expressed concern about the quick change in Waters & Kraus’ position that it would not settle with Bondex International, the remaining defendant in the suit, for less than 0,000, according to the letter.
The amount of the settlement is not public. Waters & Kraus partner Charles Siegel of Dallas says the plaintiff in Lott reached a confidential settlement with Bondex International on Nov. 17, 2006.
In view of the circumstances, Armstrong wrote in the letter, she had referred the matter to the WSBA for an investigation. “Until the matter is resolved, I must decline to admit pro hac vice any member of the Waters & Kraus firm in asbestos cases in my court,” she wrote.
Frost and Iola each did not return telephone calls to their offices before presstime on Jan. 11.
Jeanne F. Loftis, one of Bondex International’s attorneys and a shareholder in Bullivant Houser Bailey in Portland, Ore., declines comment.
Siegel denies that Frost was listening to the jury’s deliberations. “That’s just not true, and we’re confident we’ll be exonerated,” Siegel says in a Jan. 4 interview.
A Jan. 8 written statement from the firm issued in response to Texas Lawyer’s request for an interview with managing partner Kraus states:
Obviously, when a King County Superior judge is concerned, the law firm is concerned. Since receiving this complaint, the firm has moved rapidly to examine the issues raised in Judge Armstrong’s Dec. 18 letter. We are working diligently to determine the facts so that we can respond to the claims in the letter to the Washington State Bar Association. We are proud of our longtime reputation for having the highest ethical standards in client representation. Our internal examination will be thorough and objective, and we will move quickly to assess the facts in this case.
Michael Armitage, partner in charge of Waters & Kraus’ Los Angeles office, confirms that the firm withdrew Frost’s application for pro hac vice admission in Huff. Armitage declines further comment.
Because of confidentiality requirements, Judy Berrett, spokeswoman for the WSBA, says she cannot confirm or deny whether the group is investigating the allegations against Frost and Iola. If an investigation is in the works, it could take several months before the Bar completes its work, she says.
Berrett says that under Washington Rule of Professional Conduct 8.5(a), a lawyer who is not admitted to practice law in the state of Washington is subject to disciplinary authority in the state if the lawyer provides or offers to provide legal services in the state.
Robert H. Aronson, a University of Washington School of Law professor who has taught professional responsibility, says that surreptitiously listening to a jury’s deliberations is a “clear violation” of the Washington disciplinary rules. A lawyer who just happens to hear a jury’s decision but then uses the information to settle a case to the advantage of the lawyer’s client also violates the rules, Aronson says.
Aronson says Washington Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4(d) provides a “catch-all” for such misconduct. Under that provision, it is professional misconduct to engage in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice. “Courts find no problem applying that rule when it’s something so obvious that a lawyer should know it,” he says.
Washington Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4(a) also provides that a lawyer commits professional misconduct if he or she violates or attempts to violate the disciplinary rules, knowingly assists or induces another lawyer to violate the rules or violates the rules through the acts of another person, Aronson says.
John Dzienkowski, a University of Texas School of Law professor who teaches and writes on professional responsibility, says lawyers may be subject to discipline in more than one jurisdiction.
Under Texas Disciplinary Rule of Professional Conduct 8.05(a) the State Bar of Texas can discipline a lawyer in this state for conduct occurring in another jurisdiction.
“You can be disciplined in two jurisdictions for conduct in one,” Dzienkowski says. “It doesn’t happen very often, because bars have limited resources.”
