From Barcelona – According to a report presented at the European Society of Cardiology meeting, heartburn drugs are safe to take at the same time as blood-thinning drugs. Researchers studied over 13000 patients, administering the anti-clotting drug Plavix along with various types of heartburn drugs. Results showed no increase in heart attack or stroke while the anti-clotting drugs still retained their clinical effectiveness. From Italy – Type 2 diabetics may find less need for medication if they go on a Mediterranean diet, according to a report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers studied two groups of Type 2 diabetics for four years–one group was on a low-fat diet while the other was on a Mediterranean diet. Those on a Mediterranean diet were at a 37% reduced risk of needing to take medication for their diabetes. And finally, from Toronto – According to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, clinical breast exams provide more false positive diagnoses of breast cancer than mammography. Researchers analyzed the screening results of nearly 300000 women aged 50-69. Some underwent both mammograms and breast examinations, while others only underwent mammogram. Results showed that women who underwent both tests were more likely to be referred for follow-up care, but were also at a 2.2% increased risk of receiving a false positive diagnoses.

The Pulse 4.12: September 11th Ten Year Anniversary
Welcome to the Pulse Four-Point-Twelve: This year marks the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. It’s been a decade, but the repercussions of those attacks are still felt. We’re honoring both the lives lost and the heroes made on icyou’s September 11th Channel. Hear the stories of the people who were right there when the planes hit the towers. In this first video, you’ll hear from a nine-eleven first responder, who also happens to be my own aunt, Rose Oropallo. She reflects on the weeks she spent at Ground Zero, and shares her personal health struggles from the asbestos she was exposed to. She talks about other first responders who have since died of mesothelioma and other forms of lung cancer from toxic exposure at Ground Zero. September 11th, 2001 is one of those infamous days where everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing. For some individuals what they were doing was so closely related to the attacks, this date holds an especially significant place in their own personal — and even career – history. In this video, we feature Dr. Thomas Joseph, an orthopedic surgeon who operated on two of the last survivors to be pulled from the rubble. The rescue and lives of these Port Authority Policemen, John McLoughlin and William Jimeno, was the subject of Oliver Stone’s film, World Trade Center. The two suffered from Compartment Syndrome, and their limbs were saved by Dr. Joseph. Both Joseph and Oropallo have …
