Q&A: What’s causing my Sheep to cough like chain-smokers?
Question by : What’s causing my Sheep to cough like chain-smokers?
We’ve recently bought 2 Wiltshire Horn lambs, probably around 5 months age. They both have really bad wheezy coughing fits, what causes this, and how can I remedy it? They’re pet sheep, not meat sheep
Cheers!

They have pneumonia. I have about 50 sheep and there are always lambs that end up with that. You can treat them with LA200 from TSC. Your best bet is going to a local large animal vet and getting some antibiotics. Hope this helps

How Can Sheep Wormer Prevent Disease in Sheep  Â
How Can Sheep Wormer Prevent Disease in Sheep  Â
Article by John Samual
Sheep, especially lambs, are more susceptible to internal parasites and worms. There are many types of worms that can cause health problems for sheep. However, stomach worms are more serious. They can cause various symptoms, which, if left unattended, can lead to death. Sheep wormer is essential to treat and control worms. If the recommended dosage is used, the wormers help eradicate immature and adult worms effectively.
Sheep become infected with worms when they graze. There are chances that sheep might consume infective larvae on the pasture. The larvae develop into adult worms and lay eggs inside the digestive tract of the sheep. If the environmental conditions are favourable (warm and moist), the worms thrive well, causing health problems for the sheep.
Haemonchus contortis, commonly known as wire worm is the most common worm that causes losses in sheep flocks. It is a blood sucking parasite that causes anaemia. It penetrates the sheep’s abomasums, causing blood and protein loss in the animals. It can also cause bottle jaw, a condition characterised by the accumulation of fluid under the jaw of the sheep.
Liver flukes are another common type of worms that infect sheep. The problem is more and severe in wet areas. These worms are spread by snails. Liver flukes damage the sheepÂ’s liver, causing blood loss, weight loss, diarrhoea, jaundice and death.
Lung wormÂ’s larvae are passed in the faeces. However, they travel to the sheepÂ’s respiratory system, as soon as they enter their system. The symptoms of lung worm are not observable, unless the problem becomes severe.
Nasal bots are external parasites that deposit on the muzzles or nostrils of the sheep. The larvae migrate into the nostrils and head sinuses, where they develop into adults. A snotty nose is the common symptom of nasal bot infection. Weight reduction is another common symptom.
Clasomectin is an effective sheep wormer that helps treat and control gastrointestinal roundworms, lung worms, nasal bots and flukes. It is the only combination injection available to treat fluke and worms. Its special blend formula of ivermectin and closantel gives wide spectrum efficiency against most of the immature and adult internal as well as external parasites in sheep. It is licensed in the UK and other European countries.
Combinex is another sheep wormer that is effective against Fascioliasis (disease caused by liver flukes), parasitic bronchitis and parasitic gastroenteritis. Combinex eradicates mature and developing immature cooperia, ostertagia, chabertia, Nematodirus and oseophagostomum species in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep. It is also effective against Dictyocaulus SPP in the lungs. It is efficient in treating and controlling two day old immature Fasciola hepatica to adult flukes and thereby helps treat acute as well as chronic Fascioliasis. Combinex should be given as an oral drench. It can be administered using almost all types of automatic drenching guns. It is safe for young and pregnant sheep. One ml dosage is recommended per 5kg bodyweight of the sheep. Meat can be taken only 56 days after administering the drug.
Fasimec Duo is a broad spectrum sheep wormer that can be used to treat and control gastrointestinal nematodes, lung worms, liver flukes and nasal bots in sheep. It is not recommended for sheep producing milk for human consumption.
Supaverm is an oral suspension that contains closantel and mebendazole. It helps control Fascioliasis and gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep. It is effective against round worms, tapeworms and lungworms. One ml of Supaverm is recommended per 5 kg bodyweight of sheep.
