My mom went in for an MRI on her lower abdemon and a 1cm spot was found on her lung. They are going to do a CT to see if there are other spots, she is 80 years old, never has smoked, what are the chances this is cancerous? Thank you for any helpful input.

A CT will give better imaging of her lungs but chances are if there weren’t more seen in the MRI they will be very small on the CT, if there at all. If its just the one spot that’s there chances are nothing will be done about it because it is so small. It would end up being a wait and see approach, if it is cancer at all. I hope everything turns out!

A family member passed from ischemic intestine 6 months ago and I saw his medical records today. A chest x ray showed nothing, but less than a week later a ct scan showed 2 large masses and several smaller ones throughout the lungs. How is this possible? Also, can what’s shown on the CT scan be positively identified as malignancies without further testing?

AACR 2011: Combination therapy targeting MEK and PI3K pathways shows anti-tumour activity
Dr Johanna Bendell – Sarah Cannon Research Institute, Nashville, USA. The combination of two compounds that inhibit two of the most frequently mutated cancer pathways is showing promise in an ongoing Phase I trial. The research, presented by Dr Johanna Bendell, tests a combination of GDC-0973, which inhibits MEK1/2 and GDC-0941, which inhibits PI3K. The patients received a combination of different doses of GDC-0973 and GDC-0941; these drug combinations were well tolerated and only produced with mild side effects. Several patients demonstrated decreases in tumour size, including two patients with melanoma, one with prostate cancer and two with non-small cell lung cancer. It is hoped that these targeted treatments will eventually help clinicians treat cancers more effectively and will produce fewer adverse effects than current therapies.

Metastatic breast cancer spread to colon, been on chemo for 4 months and CT scan shows no changes?

We found out my mom’s metastatic breast cancer most recently spread to her colon after a colonscopy in June. She’s been on more aggressive chemo since then and her most recent CT scan done (a couple weeks ago) shows no change at all.
It has also spread to her hip bone, lungs and liver, along with a second occurrence of breast cancer in between, and treatments for those areas showed great improvements. She’s been on chemo and Herceptin for 5+ years which has worked considerably well, she’s a 12 year survivor so far.
Is the colon a harder area to treat when it has spread there? She went from 3 hour treatments one week on/3 weeks off to 8 hour treatments for 3 weeks on/1 week off in addition to Herceptin, plus a new chemo pill she’s never had before. The good news is the spots haven’t gotten any bigger but her doctor is concerned there hasn’t been any progress at all after 4 months.
Any advice or personal experiences are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I’m not Denise but I respect her expertise. However, as a nurse, I have seen patient with colon cancer have surgery and survive only they use a bag because the disease part of the colon is removed and instead of normal bowel movements, a bag is in place on the abdomen. I had to aunts that had this. One of my aunts had a reversal because all signs of the cancer was gone after treatment. Even though a bag is in place, chemo continues to get residual cancer cells. It sounds like your mom’s cancer has spread beyond the colon. All I can say is I pray she fells that special peace that passes all understanding. I pray she gets well. God bless.

my husband had cancer 11 years ago hodgkins stage 4 he went to hosptial and they did a x-ray and seen something so they did a ct scan and die and still seen something in the top right lung he said something about 2 lumps and he dont know if his hodgkins came back or not. i have made his appointment but i am wondering since they sending us to a cancer center and by what they seen could it be something else the waiting is eating me up he is hoase he should have never made it 11 years ago they said but it wasnt lungs either

firsty im really sorry to hear this! sounds like the doctor suspects somthing is wrong here thats y he sent u back 2 the cancer centre , you could make an appointment with your gp for this week and talk to him/her see if they can give u any indication as to what they have seen on the scan! i know its hard but try 2 stay calm!

He had to have a complete larengectomy last year. He was given no radiation after the surgery.

A pet scan shows increase in metabolic activity in a particular place in the body. Cancer/ infections can light up as a spot on a pet scan. Your mother’s doctor is probably looking to make sure that either the spot in the lung disappeared (i.e. it was something noncancerous) or if it is still there or larger, they may opt to biopsy it (if it’s posssible to rule out cancer). Breast cancer can spread to the lungs that’s why her doctor is concerned. You should not stress out over this issue. There is still a chance that it could be just an artifact.

Zero deaths every year are attributed solely to marijuana.
It doesn’t even increase your risk of lung cancer by smoking it… they can’t even find a higher incidence of lung cancer even in chronic mj smokers… the anti-cancer effects of the drug overpower the fact that you are taking in carcinogens by smoking a leaf.

When we did xrays to do prelinary work before surgery for a very small mast cell tumor on my cat’s head (he has a good appetite, heart normal, breathing normal, etc), a large shadow showed up (in all 3) indicating a primary lung tumor. We see the Internist in a few days, but the cat’s blood work is perfectly normal. My primary vet said that had it not been for the x-ray, she’d never guess anything was wrong. No cancer cells in the blood work. This confuses me, a I figured it must be a part of the other cancer and metastasized, but that would show in the blood, right? Do cats have benign lung tumors? He is acting SO NORMAL…running, playing, eating, etc. BTW, he is nearly 13.

Few effective therapies for ovarian cancer exist, so it would be advantageous for patients if a new drug could be found that fights the cancer, said Gottfried Konecny, an assistant professor of hematology/oncology, a Jonsson Cancer Center researcher and first author of the study.”I think Sprycel could be a potential additional drug for treating patients with Src dependent ovarian cancer,” Konecny said. “It is important to remember that this work is only on cancer cell lines, but it is significant enough that it should be used to justify clinical trials to confirm that women with this type of ovarian cancer could benefit.”Recent gene expression studies have shown that about one-third of women have ovarian cancers with activated Src pathways, so the drug could potentially help 7,000 ovarian cancer patients every year.In this study, the UCLA team tested the drug against 34 ovarian cancer cell lines and they conducted genetic analysis on all cell lines. Through these analyses, the researchers were able to identify genes that predict response to Sprycel. If the work is confirmed in human studies, it may be possible to test patients for Src activation and select those who would respond prior to treatment, personalizing their care.”We were able to identify markers in the pre-clinical setting that would allow us to predict response to Sprycel,” Konecny said. “These may help us in future clinical trials in selecting patients for studies of the drug.”Sprycel is what is known as a “dirty” kinase inhibitor, meaning it inhibits more than one pathway. Konecny said it also inhibits the focal adhesion kinase and ephrin receptor, also associated with ovarian cancer.The next step, Konecny said, would be to test the drug on women with ovarian cancer in a clinical trial. The tissue of responders would then be analyzed to determine if the Src and other pathways were activated. If that is confirmed, it would further prove that Sprycel could be used to fight ovarian cancer. In studies, women would be screened before entering a trial and only those with Src dependent cancers could be enrolled to provide further evidence, Konecny said, much like the studies of the molecularly targeted breast cancer drug Herceptin enrolled only women who had HER-2 positive disease.”Herceptin is different because we knew in advance that the only worked in women with HER-2 amplification,” he said. “In this case, we don’t clearly know that yet. The data reassure us that the drug works where the targets are over-expressed but we need more testing to confirm this.”The tests combining the drug with chemotherapy are significant because chemotherapy currently is the first line treatment for ovarian cancer patients following surgery. Because Sprycel proved to have a synergistic effect when combined with chemotherapy — both made the other work better — it may be possible to add the targeted therapy as a first line treatment if its efficacy is confirmed in future studies, adding a new tool to an oncologist’s arsenal.
