A victim of a car accident was lying in pain by the side of the road with a thoracic wound which was making a strange sucking noise with each labored inhalation. A passing off-duty paramedic applied a moist plastic sheet to the wound and the sound stopped. Why was it important that the plastic sheet be moist?

It is important to be moist so air cannot pass through as easily. It sounds like the patient had a pneumothorax, which is a hole in the chest cavity. It was getting harder to breathe because air was going into the cavity and can compress the lung. A tension pneumothorax can actually shift the heart and trachea and be deadly if not promptly treated.

The most common side effect is nausea. Fortunately, medication can be administered to control it if need be. Although nausea as well as general fatigue are the most common, radiation therapy (RT) to treat malignancies present in the region of the neck or throat (pharynx), thyroid, larynx, etc., may bring about side effects including sore throat, changes in “taste”, thickening of the saliva and dry mouth. Also, hair loss can occur– but only within the immediate target radiation field. This is less common, but still possible.
Bear in mind that chemotherapy is often an adjunct to radiation therapy in the treatment of certain carcinomas. If that is the case, the side effects of the chemo will be more severe, including nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, profound fatigue, flu-like symptoms, pain, anemia and of course, hair loss.

I will be having daily radiation treatments for 5 1/2 weeks and Chemo for 6 weeks.

Radiation treatment for different areas is done differently.
I had mine for cancer in my breast, daily treatment, 5 days a week for 5 weeks, ended up loosing layers of skin in the area treated (ouch!)
My sister had hers for uterine cancer, it was done intravaginally, single 24hour dosage which took more than 24 hours as it needed to be turned off whenever anyone else entered the room, eg meal deliveries, nurse for toilet requirements etc.

That tiny dosage would be EXTREMELY unlikely to harm anyone. If a person had a lung or liver disorder it would have to be severe for the person to be unable to tolerate that small dosage of Xanax. Xanax clears the body very quickly, the drug’s effects are gone in a matter of hours, it is completely excreted after several more. If you are a hypochondriac, then please don’t worry. This is seriously nothing to worry about, especially if the drug was prescribed for you.

Restrictive diseases make up almost all lung diseases. One characteristic of a restrictive lung disease is reduced lung volumes. If you have no other symptoms you may get by just fine however if your intake of oxygen is decreased, your respiratory rate and heart rate may increase to compensate.
The increased respiratory rate may cause you to blow off too much CO2 also know as hyperventilating. This will throw your acid/base balance off.
An increased heart rate will put a little more strain on you heart. This is not good for long periods of time.

I have had a cacerous tumor on my adrenal gland around 2 years old but it has been cured and removed. Now i am freaking out because i have this thing that is hard and not moveable in my leg. I have read Lump,growth, tumor? of a woman who had a likeliness to my case and it was oestochodroma but unlike her and other patients with this tumor i have had no surgery on my leg. I have had scrapes and cuts but nothing that i have ever needed medical help. It has sat in my leg for around 2 years. You can’t see it unless you bend the skin to show it and it is easy to feel but hurts when touched. Now 1 of my brothers had a rare cancer when he was 18 months but he’s ok now. More recaintly my eldest brother around 20 or so has been diagnosed with desmoplastic sarcoma and not in too good of a position and has a couple years at most. I am afraid that my mother and father had only 4 kids and 3 diagnosed with cancer or in my case a cancerous tumor. If I do end up having another cancerous tumor I’ll most likely have low chances since it is the size of a dime growing inward with little pain but it has been there for two years! Please help!

Hi Heaven,Oh my, you have certainly been through a lot for your age.I’m curious…if this lump has been there for two years already, has any doctor seen it and evaluated it? If not, it should be seen. It’s quite probable that it’s nothing, but since you have a history of cancer, and you’ve got a strong family history of cancer, ANY unexplained lump should be evaluated.But I do want to reassure you that even if, God forbid, it turns out to be cancer, there are many very effective treatments nowadays. And it’s quite possible to survive more than one type…I know, because I’ve survived two different types. Ask your parents to take you to the doctor and have the lump evaluated. Good luck, and I will be thinking of you. Please write back and let us know what happens when you see the doctor.

Okay. Out of the blue, I woke up on Wednesday morning with a sharp, stabbing pain just underneath my left shoulder blade that almost makes me cry out whenever I inhaled. I got a chest x-ray on Thursday when the pain didn’t improve, and it ruled out a collapsed lung or a broken rib. Friday rolled around and the pain was no better, and again today (Saturday), I’m still not seeing any improvement. My parents are both in the medical field and tend to downplay my ailments (this particular time, they’re saying it’s just a pulled muscle…but I didn’t do anything to have caused a pulled muscle). I’m wondering if anyone out there has the same symptoms as me and can give me a lead to what it might be. I’m trying to find a way to convince my parents that the pain isn’t in my head, and that I’m not exaggerating the pain (I always considered myself to have a high pain threshold, but my dad said today that he thinks I just can’t tolerate pain and that it’s “not that bad”. I’m describing it as “excruciating” because it literally hurts to breathe).
OTHER INFO: I’m a 23 year old female, overweight, but generally in good health. I’ve never had any kinds of serious problems before. The pain is about four inches below my shoulder blade and slightly toward the middle of my back, but radiates up the middle of my back and toward my side when I inhale too deeply. Heat seems to help a little, though it’s short-lived, ibuprofen has done almost nothing, and it feels a little better when I’m lying down as opposed to standing up. It’s not impacting my sleep, but my daily activities have basically grinded to a halt. Any suggestions or leads would be an astronomical help.

It sounds like Pleurisy. Please google it, which would take less time than me writing. In short, it is the inflammation of the membrane that covers the lungs and line the chest cavity. You may experience a loss of appetite and just don’t feel good. There is always an underlying cause for Pleurisy such as infection, injury, or tumor. Go to the doctor and do as they say.

Cancer runs heavily on my dad’s side of the family?

I love my dad’s side of the family, but it is also bitter-sweet because I take after his side, physically, which means I might get cancer. My mom’s side is big-boned, pale skin. My dad’s side is small-boned, olive/tan skin. I look like everyone on my dad’s side of the family – which scares me a little bit when it comes to the different types of cancers that run on that side of the family.
Cancer history on my dad’s side:
My grandma had a tumor in her hip area.
My grandpa died of lung cancer.
My uncle recently died of lung cancer.
My aunt died of a heart tumor (but also had tumors elsewhere in her body).
I’m sure there are other people on my dad’s side who have died of other cancers, but I don’t know the family history that well considering a lot of the people on that side have unfortunately passed away because most of them are quite old. (My dad had me late in his life).
Since I take after him, what are my chances of getting cancer?
By the way, I have a fragile immune system. I’m always getting sick.

Im not sure about the exact answer to this question, but if cancer cells are part of a gene in our body, from AP Biology, i can tell you that the chance of getting the cancer cells in your genes are not a huge possibility. It does not matter if you inherited other genes from your dad’s side, you still have a 50 50 chance of inheriting such genes. I hope this info helps.
