Q&A: Is there something safer to smoke than tobacco.?
Question by thewraithlordkourn: Is there something safer to smoke than tobacco.?
I have been smoking shisha, a type of tobacco, for a few years now on rare occasion. I do not smoke anything else, but enjoy the sensation and the social opportunities that smoking out of a hookah can bring. However, I still know that tobacco causes lung and heart disease, among other disadvantages. So is there something that I could smoke that would in some ways be safer and healthier?
For those about to answer, yes I already know that smoking isn’t great for me, so you don’t need to tell me to stop smoking. Also, Marijuana has been shown to be MUCH lmore unhealthy than tobacco.
Also, while “no” is technically a valid response, it does not really solve the issue and is therefore not a complete answer.

Smoke Free Multi-Unit Dwellings
Second-hand smoke in multi-unit dwellings (apartments, condos, housing co-ops, townhouses, etc.) is an emerging public issue. Now that most Americans are protected in public places and workplaces, demand for other smoke-free environments is on the rise. According to two 2006 surveys, 64% of people living in multi-unit dwellings (MUDs) would likely choose a smoke-free building over one where smoking is permitted. Unfortunately, such choices are extremely limited as the housing sector has been slow in responding to the increasing public demand for smoke-free accommodation. Indeed, the Non-Smokers’ Rights Association receives more calls on this issue from the general public than any other. There are various ways that smoke infiltrates other people’s private units. Indoor air studies show that, depending on the age and construction of a building, up to 65% of the air in a private residence can come from elsewhere in the building. Second-hand smoke is more than a nuisance — it’s a toxic mix of more than 4000 chemicals. In 1992 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified SHS as a “Group A” carcinogen, a category reserved for the most dangerous compounds proven to cause cancer in humans. There is no known safe level of exposure. Two major reviews of the scientific evidence emphasize that long-term exposure to SHS substantially increases risk of heart disease and lung cancer in adults. Those with pre-existing health conditions like asthma, emphysema, angina or …

The Dangers of Secondhand Smoke
Researchers say that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. In this “8 Ways to Prevent Cancer” segment, Siteman Cancer Center research member Douglas Luke, PhD, says studies have shown that exposure to secondhand smoke over time increases lung cancer risk by 20 percent to 30 percent. Researchers at Siteman have also found that buildings with smoke ventilation systems still have high nicotine levels in the air when smoking is taking place. At times, they even have higher nicotine levels in the air than buildings without ventilation systems.

How old do you have to be to smoke a smokeless electronic vapor cigarette?
Question by : How old do you have to be to smoke a smokeless electronic vapor cigarette?
I’ve heard that smoking companies are beginning to manufacture new electronic cigarettes that emit pure water vapor rather than smoke, and contain no chemicals, other than nicotine in some, and carcinogens that can cause lung cancer. How old do you have to be to buy and/or smoke one of these in the United States?

They have actually been around a while. I believe the first one was sold in since 2004 and the first patent was in 2003. Over the last few years are become main stream.
They generally contain Propylene Glycol and/or Vegetable glycerin, flavoring and nicotine (you can get it without nicotine). There is a heating element called an atomizer that warms the solution of ingredients listed above to create a vapor that you inhale & exhale. So it is not technically water vapor.
It is a fantastic alternative to smoking, it is cheaper then traditional cigarettes and doesn’t contain many of the chemical either. I’m not saying they are 100% healthy, but the studies I have read say they are better for you then traditional cigarettes. There isn’t long term clinical research available yet, so we don’t know the long term effects.
It is designed for smokers, so if you aren’t one, you probably shouldn’t use one even with no nicotine. It’s not a toy. I assume that because you are asking the question you are not of legal smoking age. Not trying to be mean, but law makers are trying to ban them, one argument is that kids will start using them. So if you are under 18, please don’t help their cause and ruin a good thing for the rest of us.
Responsible vendors don’t sell to anyone under 18 and a few states have laws making it illegal to sell to anyone under 18. I don’t know if there are specific laws regarding the age to smoke it.

How is it some people can smoke for 40 years and not develop anything serious like lung cancer or emphysema?
Question by : How is it some people can smoke for 40 years and not develop anything serious like lung cancer or emphysema?
My husband’s grandfather lived to be 93 “chewing” (he would put this thing in his mouth & spit, not sure what it really is but I know it’s bad.) smoking, & drinking pepsi & beer every night. Whereas I know there are people that could just smoke cigarettes for a few years and die a horrible death. Why is this?

My father smoked in his early 20s, but he gave it up to become healthier. Then, at 48 he passed away from colon cancer. If you ask anyone that knew him they’d tell you what a wonderful man he was. There’s no explaining it. Bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people…it sucks, but hey that’s life, right?

Q&A: How bad is second hand smoke from cigarettes?
Question by danaluana: How bad is second hand smoke from cigarettes?
My boyfriend smokes. We live together. He never smokes in the house. He goes outside on the lanai (balcony); but when the when shifts, it will sometimes blow smoke to where I’m at in the house. Also, when he comes in after just having a cigarette, the smell is very strong and I can feel it in my throat. I have an inherent lung condition. If he won’t give up cigarettes, do I need to give him up.
Best answer:
Answer by Dallas M
The second hand smoke from cigarettes are probably overrated. My father was a chronic smoker and my brother chain-smoked everyday when I was young, but I am alive and well. I have moved out but still, I don’t really think second hand smokes post much of a problem.
Oh, you have a lung condition. This is really a dilemma but you should take care for your own health first. I believe you could ask him not to smoke in front of you, in which case he might get pissed. But a gentleman does not smoke in front of a lady ( according to the Victorian book of ettiquette). If he does not take your wants seriously, then the best thing to do is to dump him.

Your lungs are one of the most amazing organs in your body. They will actually start reversing the damage that was caused by smoking whether it be from cigarettes or marijuana on their own when you stop smoking. Drinking lots of water with freshly squeezed lemon juice, sweating, and doing deep breathing techniques will all aid your body in getting rid of the toxins that are built up. Congrats on quitting! Q&A: What are good reasons for young people not to smoke?
Question by Yes: What are good reasons for young people not to smoke?
Everyone knows the long-term health consequences of smoking, but those aren’t a concern of the younger people, who are all convinced that they won’t get any serious disease from cigarettes. None of them expect to be smoking in 20 years (though the majority of those who start smoking will continue to smoke for many years), so they don’t care about the long term consequences. So lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, etc are not a concern of theirs. Most young people don’t think that their first cigarette at 15 years old or a social smoking habit in college could lead to these diseases. They think more in the moment or about the immediate future. What are good reasons for not smoking that can reach young people?

Now it’s your turn. Write a story describing the following five tobacco products as if they were residents of a town with tobacco problems. Use the consequences to describe their life circumstances. You can’t use the actual product name such as cigarettes but use a code such as meet the Winstons or the Redmans, etc. Have fun and tell a great story.
5 tobacco products and their consequences:
Cigarettes: pregnancy complications and consequences for unborn child
Pipe Tobacco: stains, odors, skin, mouth cancer
Cigars: legal consequences for underage use
Chewing tobacco: nicotine addiction, mouth cancer, and methods to quit

Hi. My name is Nic, short for Nicotina. My mother always loved that name for a girl.
Lately, my landlord has been having some problems. He thinks I’m to blame, but I disagree. After all, he’s the one who puffs away all day! I just go about my business of re-designing some of his property, that’s all.
Like about a year ago, I painted part of the interior a nice black. I even threw in a few particles on the walls to add dimension. I had to leave a few holes, but, what the heck?
Lately he’s been coughing so much I can hardly get any rest. I put another coat of black up and down his pipes thinking that might help, but all he did is have his pipes removed. Now there’s gaping hole where his voice box should be. That ruins the entire feel of the place! Just for that, I’m going to make sure a lot more is removed! He doesn’t need that heart and he could live with only one lung.
Oh, hell. I may as well go for it all! He should have done more research before he let me rent. I mean, once I get in, it takes years to get rid of me. Most people fail to kick me out and slowly deteriorate. This guy won’t be any different. Next, he’ll be wearing one of those oxygen things all the time. They do add a nice touch to the outside of the “building.” Don’t you agree?

Study- Secondhand Smoke Linked to Hearing Loss
(Image source: Photos.com) BY: JING ZHAO You’re watching multisource health video news analysis from Newsy. If you’re asked about the dangers of second hand smoke, you probably list health-related issues like heart disease, lung cancer, asthma attacks and so forth. But researchers have linked secondhand smoke to another issue — hearing loss. KCBS reports: “This morning on our ‘healthwatch,’ secondhand smoke may be causing hearing loss. New research from New York University finds the risk of hearing loss nearly doubles when teenagers are exposed to second hand smoke. Children exposed to cigarette smoke performed worst in every sound frequency test.” According to the LA Times, scientists from New York University conducted research with 1533 kids ages 12 to 19. “The scientists … found that kids who were exposed to secondhand smoke had higher rates of both low-frequency and high-frequency hearing loss. The study showed a correlation between higher cotinine levels and a greater degree of hearing loss.” One scientist explains to WNBC – the relationship between second hand smoke and hearing. They suspect smoke affects blood supply to the ear. Dr. Linda Dahl: “It’s known that smoking can actually affect the small blood vessels around the cochlea, which is where hearing takes place, and permanently damage it.” Another finding — the teenagers in the study didn’t complain of any hearing difficulty. One researcher told The New York Times… “Most kids, about 85 percent, were …

I am experiencing the same thing and for longer. I too am freed of my cigerette addiction as well BUT i have post nasal drip and sinus issues now clearing my throat all the time since i quit it is a phenomenon that afflicts many former smokers for the first year or so. You bombarded your lungs with those toxins and it takes a long while for some to get their lungs to clear out. I am not a doctor just a former smoker trying to find relief as well and I related to your question. passive second hand smoke is bad as well. My father quit smoking in 1989 but my step mom quit 2 years ago and so he was exposed to her smoking so as a result he clears his throat and coughs now sometimes so the second hand smoke can wreck havoc on others around the smokers unfortunatelty. you should stay farrrrrrrrr away from smokers and tell your father to have some decency and stop smoking around u and all that
i hope u and i get relief soon i am hating the fact that i ever smoked and now i just will encouarge u to be strong go to the gym get fresh air outside and never smoke again eventually this cough will lesson and lesson (i hope ) i think.. for sure yes
holla back

Q&A: Is all inhaled smoke equally bad for you?
Question by ninja8bit: Is all inhaled smoke equally bad for you?
I hear and read tons of reports that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer, etc. We know for fact that this is true. However when I look up reports about marijuana smoking literally all the reports are either inconclusive, say there was no increase in risk, or many say there is actually a decrease in risk of cancer in those who smoked marijuana. How can this be? Why would smoke differ like that? Can we really think smoking weed is protective?

It’s not quite as bad, but it does contain the deadly carbon dioxide, which is what causes lung cancer, and what not. It’s just on a smaller scale. BUT DO NOT FORGET, it’s still worse than clean air. Do your best not to breathe it. ITS KNOWN AS SECOND HAND SMOKE!!!!
