I’ve recently heard from a friend that cigarettes from Eastern Europe are better than the US made as they don’t put so much garbage in them in Europe. Any ideas?

Do smokers deserve civil rights?
Question by Tanya S: Do smokers deserve civil rights?
Seems like they just keep taking them away. First we have to go outside, be 20 (or however many) feet from the door even in the rain snow ect. Then the fire – safe cigarettes. They puts holes in our clothes, burn us and we have to just take it. Then anytime the government is hurting for money, what’s the first thing they raise taxes on? You guessed it, cigarettes. Here in NYC it’s up to $ 9 a pack! Do any other smokers feel just a little discriminated against?
I’d like to hear from smokers and non smokers alike. I’ll just get this out of the way now too, and let everyone know there is no scientific proof that second hand smoke causes lung cancer. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/113713.php
So all you anti – smoking people read that first plz, and keep it civil. I don’t come in to your house and dump out your beer (or w/e ur vice is) or make you go stand outside to drink it!
Also, what’s with that rude fake cough people do when I smoke near them on the street? Hell-o! You are OUTSIDE! Ugh!
Damn, some non smokers are so angry! haha, I can’t help but laugh at the ignorance.

Passive smoking may not cause lung cancer, but it can cause things like Bronchitis and it can still be very harmful. I do think that things have gone a bit too far (I had no idea you had to be 20 feet away from the door etc.) but it’s for the non-smoker’s best interests. What I think the government should do is have smoking and non-smoking pubs. We’ve already established that smoking and non-smoking areas don’t work, as the smoke doesn’t know that it’s a non-smoking area and it still travels there anyway. Having a choice would eliminate all the problems.

Q&A: Why did I develop a smokers cough after I quit smoking?
Question by : Why did I develop a smokers cough after I quit smoking?
I smoked for upwards of 30 years, I recently quit cold turkey, wasn’t near as hard as I thought it was going to be by the way. However about three weeks after quitting I developed a smokers cough, or at least I’m assuming that’s what it is since I have no symptoms of a cold, the flu or a respiratory infection. I am coughing up small amounts of phlegm, it’s usually clear, sometimes a greenish white. Any Ideas why this is happening now that I’ve quit smoking. I never had a smokers cough when I was a smoker.

I think this is smokers cough?
Question by : I think this is smokers cough?
Every mourning I have a terrible cough. I hack for at least an hour, almost unable to breath. It feels like someone is stabbing a knife through my lungs. I cough so hard my throat burns. And the cough itself sounds terrible. Sometimes I’m wheezing. I struggle to get air in.
I myself do not smoke. But my mother and her boyfriend smoke constantly. There times when I’m with them and the smoke two packs, one for each. I’m around them allot. I’ve tried to get them to not smoke around me because it screws with my allergies. And now I’ve developed what I think is smokers cough.
Could someone tell me if it actually is and if it isn’t, what it is. And how to get rid of it. I really tired of being short of breath in the mourning’s after an hour or so of coughing. Because I have band, and my breathing is something terrible after those fits.
Your help is much appreciated, and thanks to all who answer in advance.
Thank you EWL. I have to get an x-ray on my shoulder in the next few weeks anyways, so I’ll go ahead and tell them to take one of my chest as well.
Nick if you read the whole thing you would know that I am not the one smoking.
I know what second hand smoke is. (: I’ve been around it my whole life.
Half the time I can’t get away from them because when we spend our ‘family time’, I’m trapped in a moving car long enough for them to finish off 2 packs and then some.

Answer by EWL
Sounds like you have bouts of emphysema and because you cannot breath at times, you could cause harm to your body, particularly your heart from all of the coughing. Coughing hard causes your heart to work harder. Keep away from the smokers, I can not believe that they would continue to smoke around you after listening to you cough up your guts! Go see a doctor asa you can and have a chest x-ray done to see the condition of your lungs.

Well, I’ve heard about smokers coughing up green stuff before. Gross [no offense] and obviously unhealthy, but not out of the ordinary for a smoker.
The black stuff… I’ve never heard of that happening, but that’s more than likely tar that you are coughing up, which would make sense.
As for the blood… this is often caused by tiny blood vessels breaking in the throat from coughing [which you have obviously been doing quite a lot of

Are smokers’ rights being taken away from them?
Question by Sean
: Are smokers’ rights being taken away from them?
i read a very short article this morning on cnn.com mentioning how New York City is introducing a bill that would ban smoking outdoors-here’s the link:
http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2010/09/16/new-york-city-tries-to-ban-outdoor-smoking/?hpt=T2
Before i go any further, i’d like whoever reads this to know that i don’t smoke, and that nearly my entire family has passed from lung cancer due to heavy smoking. i am well aware of all the horrible things smoking does to smokers and second hand smoking.
i fear this is going to be a bit of a rant, and i must apologize in advance. But i’ve been getting more and more angry as i learn about more bans going on with where a smoker can smoke. i live in New Jersey. Smoking has been banned in bars, in restaurants, and a lot of companies are now banning people from smoking on the premises. There were designated areas in restaurants-smoking and non, and in bars, granted, i’ll give them that one. But nevertheless, i feel like the government is just taking away all of a smokers’ rights to smoke. i understand the fact that it’s very oftentimes offensive to second hand smokers, but if they don’t like the smell, they can go somewhere else. And again, second hand smoking is obviously something that can be equally as jeopardizing to one’s health as first hand. But i feel like (i’m a Republican mind you) the government is just further taking away peoples’ rights, that it’s getting larger in what it does, and it’s invading even further into peoples’ private lives.
So yes. Again, let it be known that i am well aware of why these bans are being suggested or have already been implemented, but what are your thoughts on the matter?

Most likely not. The left over smell is not an issue, it is the actual second hand smoke that can cause damage, but they are ususally talking about people who live with smokers or work daily in a smokey environment, like a bar.

Smokers who develop cancer.?
Question by nilleh: Smokers who develop cancer.?
oK, say a person who smokes develops caner, that is unrelated to the skmoking. Like, luekimia. If they continue to smoke will it raise their chances even more to develop cancer in a place that IS related to smoking. Like a person has luekimia, will it raise the chance of the cancer spreading to a place that Is related to smoking? Like their lung? Like, if they never smoked, the cancer would have never spread had they not been smoking? Does this make sense?

Answer by Stephen C
Which diseases are caused or made worse by smoking?
Lung cancer. About 30,000 people in the UK die from lung cancer each year. More than 8 in 10 cases are directly related to smoking.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). About 25,000 people in the UK die each year from this serious lung disease. More than 8 in 10 of these deaths are directly linked to smoking. People who die of COPD are usually quite unwell for several years before they die.
Heart disease is the biggest killer illness in the UK. About 120,000 people in the UK die each year from heart disease. About 1 in 7 of these deaths are due to smoking.
Other cancers – of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, gullet (oesophagus), pancreas, bladder, cervix, blood (leukaemia), and kidney are all more common in smokers.
Circulation. The chemicals in tobacco can damage the lining of the blood vessels and affect the level of lipids (fats) in the bloodstream. This increases the risk of atheroma forming (sometimes called ‘hardening’ of the arteries). Atheroma is the main cause of heart disease. It is also the main cause of strokes, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation of the legs), and aneurysms (swollen arteries which can burst causing internal bleeding). All of these atheroma-related diseases are more common in smokers.
Sexual problems. Smokers are more likely than non-smokers to become impotent or have difficulty in maintaining an erection in middle life. This is thought to be due to smoking-related damage of the the blood vessels to the penis.
Ageing. Smokers tend to develop more ‘lines’ on their face at an earlier age than non-smokers. This often makes smokers look older than they really are.
Fertility is reduced in smokers (both male and female).
Menopause. On average, women who smoke have a menopause nearly two years earlier than non-smokers.
Other conditions where smoking often causes worse symptoms include: asthma, colds, flu, chest infections, tuberculosis, chronic rhinitis, diabetic retinopathy, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, and Crohn’s disease.
Smoking increases the risk of developing various other conditions including: optic neuropathy, cataract, macular degeneration, cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis, psoriasis, gum disease, tooth loss, osteoporosis and Raynaud’s phenomenon.
Smoking in pregnancy increases the risk of:
Miscarriage.
Complications of pregnancy, including bleeding during pregnancy, detachment of the placenta, premature birth, and ectopic pregnancy.
Low birth weight. Babies born to women who smoke are on average 200 grams (8 oz) lighter than babies born to comparable non-smoking mothers. Premature and low birth weight babies are more prone to illness and infections.
Congenital defects in the baby – such as cleft palate.
Stillbirth or death within the first week of life – the risk is increased by about one-third.
Poorer long-term growth, development, and health of the child. On average, compared to children born to non-smokers, children born to smokers are smaller, have lower achievements in reading and maths, and have an increased risk of developing asthma.
How does smoking affect other people?
Children
Children and babies who live in a home where there is a smoker:
Are more prone to asthma and ear, nose and chest infections. About 17,000 children under five years old in England and Wales are admitted to hospital each year due to illnesses caused by their parents smoking.
Have an increased risk of dying from cot death (sudden infant death syndrome).
Are more likely than average to become smokers themselves when older.
On average, do less well at reading and reasoning skills compared to children in smoke-free homes, even at low levels of smoke exposure.
Are at increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer as adults.
Passive smoking of adults.
You have an increased risk of lung cancer and heart disease if you are exposed to other people smoking for long periods of time. Tobacco smoke is also an irritant, and can make asthma and other conditions worse.
Other problems with smoking
Your breath, clothes, hair, skin, and home smell of stale tobacco. You do not notice the smell if you smoke, but to non-smokers the smell is obvious and unpleasant.
Your sense of taste and smell are dulled. Enjoyment of food may be reduced.
Smoking is expensive.
Life insurance is more expensive.
Finding a job may be more difficult as employers know that smokers are more likely to have sick leave than non-smokers. More than 34 million working days (1% of total) are lost each year because of smoking-related sick leave.
Potential friendships and romances may be at risk. (Smoking is not the attractive thing that cigarette advertisers portray.)
What are the benefits of stopping smoking?
The benefits begin straight away. You reduce your risk of getting serious disease no matter what age you give up. However, the sooner you stop, the g

Do you think smokers and alcoholics have the right to sue if they get a disease?
Question by Point: Do you think smokers and alcoholics have the right to sue if they get a disease?
Not too long ago there was a news story about a man in Tampa that developed lung cancer after years of smoking.
His lawsuit was for $ 10 million, but was only awarded $ 260,000.
Since the 1930′s, doctors and pathologists have published information about the ill effects of smoking.
And in the early 1970′s, television and radio broadcasts were no longer allowed to air smoking ads.

Q&A: recurrent nighttime coughing, smokers cough or not?
Question by : recurrent nighttime coughing, smokers cough or not?
I’ve smoked on and off for maybe 2, 2 and a half years. Mostly off. Ive been smoking regularly for bit over a month about. I got sick a couple weeks ago about, and ever since then ive had a cough that wont go away, its mainly at night time, especially when im laying down trying to sleep. I havent been able to see a doctor and wont till at the very earliest July 30th because im on vacation and only have insurance for the state i live in, but anyway, my coughing keeps me up and makes it hard for me to sleep, and once again has pretty much only been since ive gotten sick & hasnt gone away. but it someitmes sounds like a smokers cough, not a regular sick cough. im also having to clear my throat alot when coughing, but that could be from my allergies, (dr said that last summer), but i dont know how to make it go away. i stopped smoking a couple days ago because if it was just from smoking i dont want to hurt my body any more, but anyways, what do you think is causing this and what can i do?

If smoking is deadly, how can heavy smokers live till 80 or more and die of natural causes?
Question by : If smoking is deadly, how can heavy smokers live till 80 or more and die of natural causes?
I am a smoker and smoke around 10 cigarette’s a day. i mostly smoke after meals and at night before sleeping. I have been smoking for almost 5 years now. I know smoking can cause lung cancer but how can you tell if you are gona get it or not cause some people get it and some people stay healthy till they die even after being chain smokers for all there lives.
Best answer:
Answer by abrupt_silence
Actually most smokers that quit before old age or even smoke until their old age have breathing problems. If you see someone with an oxygen tank or nebulizer age 50+ its usually because they smoked. You can’t tell if you’re going to get cancer, if there were a way to tell it’d save a lot of lives. Some people are just heartier than others when it comes to being able to stay generally healthy well into their dying days.

Do marijuana smokers belong in jail?
Question by —-: Do marijuana smokers belong in jail?
Because I absolutely think so and I know all non-smokers would agree with me. People who smoke marijuana are extremely dangerous to society. They are a bunch of cold-hearted addicts who are luring people into a life of debauchery and poor health because they feel that’s the only way to get through life. They are poisoning themselves with a drug that causes lung cancer and brain damage and are hopelessly addicted to it. I wish all pot smokers were thrown in jail or taken out into the street and shot. Everyone who thinks marijuana should be legalized is a stoner.
Best answer:
Answer by AikidoKokikai93
This is not true at all. I have never smoked marijuana and don’t intend to, but I don’t think all smokers are stone-cold addicts or potentially dangerous at all. If you knew the first thing about marijuana, you would know it puts smokers into a more relaxed, happy, state. Actually, places where marijuana is legal have lower crime rates! Believe it or not, the drug is *not* what makes people violent, it’s what people to do *get* the drugs because they’re illegal.
I know plenty of people that smoke marijuana on occasion just for the hell of it, and they are perfectly wonderful people! You are very prejudiced.

What does a smokers cough feel like?
Question by Carol: What does a smokers cough feel like?
Best answer:
Answer by julie d
Well, unfortunately I can answer this question for you as I have smoked for over 30 years and need to quit, but can’t seem to. As a smoker, I often get a sore throat. I have a dry hacking cough during the day, and a deeper cough at night. When I wake up, it feels like my lungs are tight and I cough hard and a lot of mucus comes up. Also, I am short of breath quite often and when I laugh there is a hoarseness to it. This scares me, because my dad died from smoking and in the end stages of lung disease you literally die from drowning in all of that mucus that is stuck in your lungs and you can’t cough it up.
If you haven’t tried smoking yet, PLEASE don’t! It is so hard to quit and so deadly. I wish I had never started.

Mesothelioma And Asbestosis Hard To Diagnosis In Asbestos Exposed Smokers

In 02 I lost a very dear friend to liver cancer. One of the many things she (Estralita Overstreet) taught me was that even during the most adverse and stressful times, there are blessings. And those are the things we should focus on. Over the last three years I have been dealing with dyspensia caused by asbestosis. I wrote this song with Estralita in mind. With the drive to deal with asbestosis with as much dignity as she dealt with liver cancer. I miss you sister/friend. Skeet

I am experiencing the same thing and for longer. I too am freed of my cigerette addiction as well BUT i have post nasal drip and sinus issues now clearing my throat all the time since i quit it is a phenomenon that afflicts many former smokers for the first year or so. You bombarded your lungs with those toxins and it takes a long while for some to get their lungs to clear out. I am not a doctor just a former smoker trying to find relief as well and I related to your question. passive second hand smoke is bad as well. My father quit smoking in 1989 but my step mom quit 2 years ago and so he was exposed to her smoking so as a result he clears his throat and coughs now sometimes so the second hand smoke can wreck havoc on others around the smokers unfortunatelty. you should stay farrrrrrrrr away from smokers and tell your father to have some decency and stop smoking around u and all that
i hope u and i get relief soon i am hating the fact that i ever smoked and now i just will encouarge u to be strong go to the gym get fresh air outside and never smoke again eventually this cough will lesson and lesson (i hope ) i think.. for sure yes
