Has any solid estimates to how much the cost of curing cancer will be?
Question by james h: Has any solid estimates to how much the cost of curing cancer will be?
Seems scientist are on the very edge of a major breakthrough then another setback. Could all the scientist working on cancer cure get together and agree on a certain amount? Scientist have learned exactly how the universe was Big Banged into existence and how life formed in Primodal Soup? Should curing cancer be easier?

Subependymal giant-cell astrocytoma (SEGA) results from mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, whose products are major regulatory proteins linked to the activation of the mTOR pathway. A recent phase II trial of everolimus in children and adults with SEGAs showed significant reduction in tumor volume in a majority of the patients with decreased occurrence of seizures. Notably, the drug was well tolerated even with prolonged treatment, suggesting that it may be an attractive alternative to surgical resection in selective cases. On the contrary, a phase II trial with temsirolimus in patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) did not show efficacy.
There has been also substantial interest towards the development of mTOR inhibitors for the treatment of sarcomas. Temsirolimus has failed to demonstrate meaningful activity as monotherapy in these tumors, as evidenced by a phase II trial in which PFS was only 2 months. Everolimus, on the contrary, may have synergistic activity with imatinib mesylate in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). Phase I/II data of this combination in patients who progressed with imatinib mesylate alone showed a modest improvement in progression-free survival (PFS). A phase II trial with ridaforolimus in 216 patients with advanced sarcoma was carried out. Patients enrolled included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma and other soft tissue sarcomas. In several cases stable disease was attained, with amedian survival of 40 weeks, and outcomes were similar between the four histologic subtypes.
Besides brain tumors and sarcomas, mTOR inhibition has been studied in various other solid tumors, including gastrointestinal, prostate, and head and neck cancers. The combination of bevacizumab and everolimus exhibited clinical activity in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, despite previous progression on a bevacizumab-based regimen. There is also preliminary evidence from a study in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma suggesting that everolimus may be moderately active in stabilizing disease progression. Other trials combining mTOR inhibitors with sorafenib or bevacizumab in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are ongoing. The combination of bicalutamide and everolimus appears to have promising antitumor activity and an acceptable toxicity profile in castrate-resistant prostate cancer, whereas various trials with rapalogs are being conducted for either the treatment of advanced prostate cancer or in the neo-adjuvant setting.

Metal Gear Solid 3: I Like the Way You Move
This is a parody video I made after a strong recommendation by my little sister, to quote her reasoning: “You wanted a kick ass song, but I didn’t know any so I thought “I’ll find you a stupid one.” And I remembered this song from a commercial, I heard the lyrics and you said something about Ocelot and I was like “UGH I hate Ocelot”, and these images (from MGS3) came into my head. Imagine its Ocelot singing to BB!” Personally, I wanted to make a Big Boss video, but Big Boss kicks so much ass; I would need to find a song packed full of so much awesomeness that the band who recorded it died after it was completed because they used up all of their energy on rocking out in order to be sufficiently worthy of Big Boss status. …that last part made about as much sense as this video.
Help! -Removal of tar like adhesive off of solid brick floor,?
Question by sunshinelun: Help! -Removal of tar like adhesive off of solid brick floor,?
After removing a carpet we found lino – under lino we found old asbestos tiles.
Once we removed the tile – most of it it left a black residue – possibly adhesive. Under these tiles was a solid brick floor. House is circa 1750. I would love to remove this black stuff to return the floor to its original state. I have tried a steamer which did the trick with the bulk of the problem.
I have now tried soda crystals. I have got a window scraper and am going to try wire wool and detergent. If anyone has any advice i would be grateful.

After head and neck cancer treatment, how long before you could eat solid food again?
Question by David R.: After head and neck cancer treatment, how long before you could eat solid food again?
I had cancer on my tonsil which spread to the lymph system, so underwent chemo therapy and radiation treatments to my neck. I haven’t been able to eat solid food since february. I can eat ice cteam, jello or soft fruits but nothing solid. Anyone been through anything similar? Any advise? It drives me crazy seeing food ads on tv. I want everything I see, even stuff I really don’t like, but just can’t eat.
Btw, my prognosis is good, the tumor has shrunk significantly.
Thank you, Maxie, but all the docs say is that it varies from person to person, from a few months to a year or more.

Will quitting cigarettes smoking make me a more solid base runner (read description)?
Question by Peter San: Will quitting cigarettes smoking make me a more solid base runner (read description)?
Alright basically I play baseball on my college team, and I smoke cigarettes. I am a really fast runner and the fastest base runner on my team (granted, that’s not saying much becasue we don’t have many great runners). But I am wondering if I quit smoking will it improve my running even more? I’m trying to get into as solid shape for next season as possible so I’m debating quitting smoking. How soon after quitting do your lungs start to get stronger? And how much faster do you think it will make me (I smoke about 1-2 packs a day). And also, I know this sounds bad but I really don’t think I can do it without nicotine so I am debating starting to chew tobacco since most of the guys on my team do it anyway, is this a good way to stop smoking? And does chewing negatively effect your performance (no cancer lectures please, just asking about athletic performance)?

quitting smoking would definitely help…but chewing tobacco is just as bad for you athletically

“Most of the nano-material has a characteristic size is smaller, the greater the toxicity. Because of the smaller size, its surface area, the higher the reactivity, followed by other substances into the organism the possibility of reaction the greater. ” Nano, has been more and more into our lives, nano Paint, Nano Clothing, Nano cosmetics, nano-batteries, it seems that everything around us can be “nano.” However, a recent study found that Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Paint Containing nanoparticles can result in serious human pulmonary fibrosis, and even death. “Bare nanoparticles into the human body, if, indeed is a great harm.” Solid State Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of the original director, senior fellow, former chief scientist of nano-materials, Zhang Lide told “Beijing Science and Technology News”, a nanometer is very small particles, one nanometer is equal to one billion per 1 meter. Simple analogy is, to a diameter of 0.05 mm of hair were divided into 50 000 copies, each about the thickness is 1 nm. This tiny nanoparticles, through the air into the lungs, can cause pulmonary fibrosis; if enter the body, because it is too small, it will default to the virus body and metabolism in the liver; even some nanoparticles, but also into the human brain, these nano-particles flow along the cerebral blood vessels, eventually forming blood clots blocking blood vessels; nano-materials on human vascular wall also had a destructive effect, as the surface activity of nano-high, it will snatch the blood vessels cells Electronic To speed up the aging vessel. All of these nano-particles will be deposited in the person’s body, not metabolic out. Abroad, there are similar experiments to prove, NASA Space Center’s team has the lungs of mice with spray solution containing carbon nanotubes and found that carbon nanotubes will enter the alveoli in mice, and the formation of granuloma. Researchers at the University of Rochester in New York so that mice with a diameter of 20 nm PTFE particles in the air for 15 minutes, most of the mice died within the next 4 hours, while another group of mice exposed to a diameter 120 nano-particles in the air, then the safe. “Most of the nano-material has a characteristic size is smaller, the greater toxicity. Because of the smaller size, the greater its surface area, the higher reaction activity, followed by other substances into the organism response the greater the chance. “Chinese Academy of Sciences, a nanotechnology expert on condition of anonymity told the” Beijing Science and Technology News “, in the face with the toxicity of nano-particles, the body’s own resistance but not strong, although the semipermeable membrane of human cells allows only water and salt into the exchange, but microporous semipermeable membrane is only 10 nm, if the size of the smallest nano-materials invasion, this layer of protective film is powerless. In addition, the human skin with a negative, you can exclude part of swap with the negatively charged nanoparticles invasion, but this layer of negative electrode of its weak resistance limited. Addition to the human body have been affected, the nano-material impact on the environment there are potential risks. “Some contain nano materials, batteries, household appliances, Plastic Products, Rubber products Even Chemical industry Products. If exposed to air, water and soils, if not in time, the cumulative effect over a long period can cause serious impact to the ecological environment, they can also biosphere, food chains, direct impact on human health. “Lide said, in addition to some nanomaterials are likely to wind transport, or suspended in the atmosphere at the top, and suspended in the atmosphere of other chemicals to form larger aggregates of the interaction, the effect of gravity deposited, left in the water and soil in. Despite such exposure to nanomaterials in the environment is also minimal, but with use of artificial nano-materials exposed to increased opportunities to conduct research in this area is necessary. “However, nothing is absolute, and not demonizing the impact of nano-materials on humans, nano is a rigorous science.” Lide said some tiny particles indeed have adverse impact on human beings, but not only as one of the representatives of the Nano. In fact a few millimeters, a few microns of the PFA will have a negative impact on the human body.
