Q&A: How do you tell someone that you are close to, that someone they are close may be dying of cancer real soon?
Question by BABY GIRL: How do you tell someone that you are close to, that someone they are close may be dying of cancer real soon?
Cancer is very hard to live with when you are the person with it. But seeing a love or a patient going through the radiation and the chemo . Losing weight, losing their hair, not being able to eat and getting up everyday for your treatments. I have been in this line of work for the last five years and it does not get any easier to deal with. But I am so very glad that I chose to work with cancer patients because it is a very rewarding career to be in. I love taking care of my patients. Be able to bring a smile to a person’s face or to hear them say thank you for being here for me is so wonderful and it makes you feel so good on the inside. But to see a love one go through this is even harder. So that is why I say it is not easy to tell someone that you are close to that the other one may die soon is a real challenge. But some how I got get the strenghth to do it.

Children dealing with a soon to be death?
Question by Mischele, RN♥: Children dealing with a soon to be death?
My father in law has had a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis since September. He’s gone downhill fairly quickly. We didn’t think he would make it back in December but he miraculously recovered fairly well and was doing well with chemo and radiation. About 2 weeks ago he was taken back to the hospital (this is his 5th hospitalization) with shortness of breath and was doing ok the first several days. Now the doctors say that there’s nothing more they can do, the cancer is getting more aggressive and he’s now on hospice care. I just had a baby last month so today was the first time I’d seen him since he was in the hospital and I give him 2 weeks MAX.
My 10 year old nephew who is fairly close with my FIL is taking it really hard. My SIL keeps taking him to the hospital and it’s got to be excruciating to see his grandfather being put through some of the things he’s gone through. He often cries and it’s heart breaking.
My daughter is almost 8 and it’s been a hard year for her. My grandfather who she was close with died this time last year after a long hospitalization. Then my uncle died, my husband’s grandmother died and then my husband’s uncle died, so she’s had a lot of loss to deal with all of a sudden. She seems to hold her emotions in check. She never cried. She almost seems emotionally stunted and sometimes I wish she’d just let it out. Her birthday is in 9 days and she made a comment about my FIL being sick and how she’s going to have a 2nd year in a row birthday with someone sick. Last year my grandfather died on March 4th and was burried on her birthday. We took her out to dinner the next day which my husband’s grandmother attended and she died last year, so she remembers all of that death related to her birthday. It’s so sad.
Both kids are dealing with this so differently. I haven’t told my daughter that my FIL is on hospice and that he’s dying. She knew he was sick and that he was never going to get better and we did tell her that he was going to die in December (we thought he was – he was on a ventilator and not doing well).
Does anyone know of any activities that I could try to get my daughter to do to help express her grief. I feel like I can’t help her if she won’t discuss it. Also I want to help my nephew as well without going above and beyond my sister-in-law. Thanks in advance.

First off sorry you have to go through that. Second, last year we had a house fire and my 6yr old son and 2yr old daughter passed away due to smoke inhalation. I have a now 5yr old son but at the time he was 4. He didnt open up to us at all and held it inside but was an open book to strangers. I had him put into counceling right away and he goes in…they have a sandbox inside the room and all sorts of toys and they draw and play, its great. They really got my son to open up and talk about his feelings and to understand everything. Much more then i could have explained to him and in words he understands. I would really try to just get her some help along with your nephew because sometimes they dont feel comfortable talking to their parents. Goodluck.

What to do when you know your dog is going to die soon :( ?
Question by : What to do when you know your dog is going to die soon
?
My beloved 15 year old pomeranian has mammary cancer which has unfortunately spread to her lungs, rendering surgical removal of the tumor pointless. Other than that she is a healthy, happy girl in no pain right now and my family and I have no choice but to but her to sleep when the tumor starts to burst/bleed.
I am, no doubt, traumitised since I’ve had my dog almost my entire 18 years of life.
I feel so hopeless, helpless and in deep emotional pain. I want to do so much but there’s nothing much i do.
How long did it take you to get over the grief of losing a beloved pet?
Is there any way to ease the pain? Especially knowing that your pet needs to be put to sleep relatively soon
?
Thank you
Best answer:
Answer by kn0w-!t-@ll
Spend as much time as you can with her, accept the fact that shell be in a better, less painful place and she’s always loved you.
I know how hard it is to lose a pet, my dog was with me from before I was born until I was 11 years old, and was my protector. I understand children get over things quicker, but just remember how much you love your dog, keep on loving her, even after she’s gone, but know that everything will be fine.

It’s hard to deal with a loved one having cancer. Especially one so severe. I had breast cancer and I often worried that I was going to leave my kids at such a young age. The only bit of advice that I can give you is to be positive when you are around her. Don’t treat her like she’s dieing. That was one thing that drove me crazy was that people would stare at me like I was dieing. Just act natural. Do the same things that you did before with her. Love her just the same as you did before. Or love her even more. Treasure her, treasure her memories. Go visit her when you can. Take lots of pictures. Focus on the good. That’s what will carry you through this. It will also help her. Good luck sweetie.

I’m guessing a month but you don’t need guesses. You need facts that should be available by asking someone on his treatment team. Do you have a facilitator? If so, ask that person. A Nurse Practitioner on the team is also a good resource. Never be afraid to ask them questions.

How quickly can cancer spread in a cat and is there anything you can do to prevent it from happening so soon?
Question by Shamu the Wise: How quickly can cancer spread in a cat and is there anything you can do to prevent it from happening so soon?
We just put our family cat to sleep. He was suffering from cancer and could barely move – he was being hand fed since he lost his appetite and was very lethargic so we did not want him to suffer anymore. I feel bad because I live very far away from the family home and had not been back since July. So I did not have a chance to see him in person but did get to say goodbye via Skype.
He was always healthy and his last blood test in May indicated that there were no serious issues.

It depends on the cancer, how early you caught it, and what kind of treatment is available. I doubt there was anything you could have done. It sounds like it took him pretty fast, your family made the right choice.

Our cat is going to die soon. She has lung cancer. She has stopped eating and is brething with discomfort.?
Question by rizwan602: Our cat is going to die soon. She has lung cancer. She has stopped eating and is brething with discomfort.?
Her brething is deep but she exhales with some force. Sometimes (for a couple of minutes) she is brething with her mouth open and most other time she is brething through her nose.
Her cancer was diagnosed in November 06 and she was given 3 months to live. She has shown no signs of illness until 2 weeks ago when we noticed her heavy breaths. She still was playful and eating but for the last 2 days she has stopped eating.
We are periodically feeding her what the doctor recommends. We are making her ingest liquids and some solid foods.
What I want to know is when is the time to take her in for euthanization? What are the symptoms that she is hours or minutes away from dying a painful death?
We do not want do it too soon because what if she is sick from something else and she recovers? I do not want to think I killed her by being impatient?
She still responds to calling by moving her tail. She walks slowly and just lays down.
What are the signs that she is near?
She does not have her mouth open right now. Sometimes she will brethe with her mouth slighly open.
What I am afraid of is if we euthanize her, we may be killing her because she is lethargic from another ailment and the lung cancer is not whats causing her discomfort. What if she makes it back to how she was in a few days? Maybe the lung cancer will take her in 2 months instead of now. We do not want to kill her … what should we wait for as far as symptoms of nearby death from lung cancer? Coughing? Blood coming out? We have for now decided that if we see any prolonged discomfort in brething, we will euthanize her. But I want to know what to look for.
Thank you all!

Q&A: How soon can symptoms of asbestos exposure appear?
Question by sammbertt: How soon can symptoms of asbestos exposure appear?
For the last 6 months we have lived in a home that has many pipes that are wrapped in asbestos. It is heated by hot water and all the basement pipes are wrapped in asbestos and cardboard.
Ever since about a month after we moved in, my daughter has had serious health/breathing issues. She has even had several lung collapses. Could this be at all related? The whole family has had problems, but hers is the most severe.
How soon after exposure would there be any symptoms?

Answer by Benjamin
Dyspnea and nonpleuritic chest wall pain are the most common presenting symptoms of malignant mesothelioma. (Approximately 60-90% of patients have symptoms of chest pain or dyspnea.)
Chest radiographs show obliteration of the diaphragm, nodular thickening of the pleura, decreased size of the involved chest, radiolucent sheetlike encasement of the pleura, or a combination of these.
A loculated effusion is present in more than 50% of patients, and a major portion of the pleura is opacified by the effusion.
Chest discomfort, pleuritic pain, easy fatigability, fever, sweats, and weight loss are the other common accompanying symptoms.
Patients may also be asymptomatic, with evidence of a pleural effusion noted incidentally on physical examination or by chest radiograph.
Metastatic disease is uncommon at presentation, and contralateral pleural abnormalities are usually secondary to asbestos-related pleural disease rather than metastatic disease.
Despite the ban or reduction of asbestos in the 1960s, incidence of mesothelioma continues to increase because patients develop mesothelioma 20-40 years after asbestos exposure. The long latency period adds to the complexities of early diagnosis and treatment of the condition.

SIRTEX SIR-Spheres® – Available soon at NCI Hospital (Malaysia)
Interested to find out more? Please email: amyleong@nci.com.my Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) is a revolutionary treatment for advanced liver cancer that utilizes new technologies to deliver radiation directly to the site of tumors. Using millions of microscopic radioactive spheres, called SIR-Spheres®, the SIRT process enables the specific targeting and destruction of tumors within the liver that would otherwise be inaccessible. Unlike current, conventional chemotherapy treatments, the highly specific nature of the SIRT process increases the effectiveness in killing the cancer while minimizing harmful side effects to surrounding healthy tissue. Treatment with SIR-Spheres® is generally not regarded as a cure, but has been shown to shrink the cancer more than chemotherapy alone. This can increase life expectancy and improve quality of life. On occasion, patients treated with SIR-Spheres® have had such marked shrinkage of the liver cancer that the cancer can be surgically removed at a later date. This has resulted in a long-term cure for some patients. Patients suitable for treatment with SIR-Spheres®generally: • Have inoperable secondary (from colorectal primary) liver cancer • Have the liver as the major site of the disease • Have sufficient remaining healthy liver still functioning satisfactorily • Are well enough to tolerate the implant • Meet the pre-selection criteria, as determined by their doctors’ pre-treatment testing SIR-Spheres® are contraindicated …

Post-Cholecystectomy Syndrome (Signs and symptoms Soon after Gallbladder Surgical procedure)
Post-Cholecystectomy Syndrome (Signs and symptoms Soon after Gallbladder Surgical procedure)
Article by allbladdersymp
Post-Cholecystectomy Syndrome (Signs and symptoms Soon after Gallbladder Surgical procedure)An believed twenty million Americans have gallstones (cholelithiasis), and about 30 percent of these sufferers will ultimately build signs of their gallstone condition. The most typical symptoms specifically associated to gallstone sickness include upper stomach ache (typically, but not usually, adhering to a hefty or greasy meal), nausea, and vomiting. (The upper abdominal ache usually radiates about in direction of the right facet of the again or shoulder.)
Clients with problems of untreated cholelithiasis may expertise other signs and symptoms as properly, in addition to an elevated danger of extreme illness, or even loss of life. These complications of gallstone illness contain:
- Serious irritation or infection of the gallbladder (cholecystitis)
- Blockage of the main bile duct with gallstones (choledocholithiasis), which can cause jaundice or/and bile duct infection (cholangitis), as properly as pancreatitis
A lot more than 500,000 individuals go through removing of their gallstones and gallbladders each and every yr in the United States, generating cholecystectomy 1 of the most generally done key abdominal surgical operations. In 85 to ninety percent of cholecystectomies, the operation can be performed laparoscopically, utilizing numerous little “band-aid” incisions rather of the standard large (and far more agonizing) upper stomach incision.
For the vast bulk of sufferers with cholelithiasis, cholecystectomy successfully relieves the signs of gallstones. In ten to 15 % of patients undergoing cholecystectomy, however, persistent or new stomach or GI signs may possibly come up soon after gallbladder surgical treatment. Despite the fact that there are numerous personal triggers of persistent publish-cholecystectomy stomach or GI signs and symptoms, the existence of these kinds of signs adhering to gallbladder surgical procedure are collectively referred to as “submit-cholecystectomy” syndrome (PCS) by numerous professionals.
I routinely get inquiries from individuals who have formerly undergone cholecystectomy, and who report troubling stomach or GI signs and symptoms adhering to their medical procedures. In several circumstances, these patients have currently undergone instead considerable evaluations, but without having any distinct findings. Understandably, this kind of individuals are troubled and annoyed, each by their continual signs or symptoms and the ongoing uncertainty as to the trigger (or triggers) of these signs.
The most typical signs attributed to PCS consist of long-term stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, abnormal intestinal gasoline, and diarrhea. Fever and jaundice, which most generally occur from issues of gallbladder surgical treatment, are significantly a lot less widespread, luckily. Whilst the precise lead to, or causes, of PCS signs and symptoms can at some point be recognized in about ninety percent of individuals adhering to a thorough evaluation, even the most extensive perform-up can fail to recognize a distinct ailment as the cause of signs or symptoms in some patients. It is important to stress that there is no universal consensus on the subject of PCS amid the professionals, although most agree that there are numerous and varied triggers of long-term post-cholecystectomy signs or symptoms. As a result, it can be extremely tough to counsel the little minority of clients with continual signs right after medical procedures when a extensive function-up fails to recognize particular leads to for their suffering. symptoms of gallbladder problems
Since PCS is, in result, a non-certain medical diagnosis assigned to individuals with persistent symptoms adhering to cholecystectomy, it is critically crucial that an appropriate operate-up be done in all cases of persistent PCS, so that an exact prognosis can be discovered, and suitable treatment method can be initiated. As the recognized leads to of PCS are quite a few, nevertheless, medical professionals caring for these kinds of individuals need to tailor their evaluations of clients with PCS dependent on clinical findings, as well as prudent laboratory, ultrasound, and radiographic screening exams. This rational medical method to the assessment of PCS signs and symptoms will recognize or remove the most frequent diagnoses related with PCS in the vast majority of these kinds of individuals, sparing them the want for additional pointless and invasive screening.
