Q&A: What is the Tx for Stage IV Esophageal Cancer?
Question by : What is the Tx for Stage IV Esophageal Cancer?
My little sister was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer in Nov. 2009. They told us that it was stage III and we decided to take an aggressive approach. She took Chemo, and Radiation and then was going to have surgery to where they would remove part of her esophagus and the top part of her stomach. Common procedure for this type of cancer. On March 12th, they took her in for surgery and found that the tumor was also outside the esophagus and attached to her pancreas, the aorta and surrounding tissue. I work in the medical field and all the research that I have done has talked about the tumor metastasizing to the liver, lungs or the lymph nodes. When the doctor told me about the pancreas I wasn’t to concerned, because of the tx that they do for pancreatic cancer, but i have no clue if there is a tx option for someone whose cancer has metastasized to the aorta. So, I was wondering if anyone could give me any kind of tx options that the doctors haven’t already given, which is chemo and it is basically to slow down the growth of the tumor.

How long can a person with stage 4 lymphatic survive with no treatment? The cancer was also on the skin.?
Question by : How long can a person with stage 4 lymphatic survive with no treatment? The cancer was also on the skin.?
It is also spreading to other locations. I want a definite answer, not any B.S. about living with hope. The docs said 6 months at the time of diagnosis. It has been 3, and the person is starting to get sick everyday really bad. Please a real answer so I can try to mentally prepare myself. Thanks in advance.
The start of the whole problem was colon cancer, that my mother-in-law never got treated. then there was a spot on her foot. It grew, and grew. She didn’t have it checked out because my Father-in-law was sick with pancreatic cancer and dying, and didn’t want to worry him any. I took her to the appointment when she found out about the colon rectal stuff. After my father-in-law passed away, My wife and I finally got her to go to the docs. They told her the spot on her foot was nothing, and she didn’t do anything about it. She went to her primary a couple months later because the spot got bigger, went to a specialist, and found out that it was cancer. Did blood work and found out that it was also in her lymph nodes. She had surgical removal of the melanoma on her foot. they did a graft from her side. It didn’t take. In fact it turned black and got all infected and looked like a zombie bit her foot. They did another surgery where they took the vein from her arm, put it in her foot. Skin f

Yuvraj battling first stage of cancer- NewsX
Worrying news coming in for Indian cricket fans. According to reports Yuvraj Singh’s illness is far more serious than it was originally thought to be. According to reports Yuvi is undergoing chemotherapy in the United States. Yuvraj has been out of action for the last few months after he was diagnosed with a non-malignant golf ball sized tumor in his lung. The family however has refused to confirm reports on whether Yuvi is indeed undergoing chemotherapy. The Sahara press release had also suggested that the all-rounder had a critical illness. Some reports suggest that Yuvi may have overworked at the NCA in a bid to make a quick return, resulting in the illness taking a more serious turn. for more log onto – alpha.newsx.com

Q&A: What could it mean if a stage 4 breast cancer patient had “fluid in the heart”?
Question by gg: What could it mean if a stage 4 breast cancer patient had “fluid in the heart”?
Sorry, details are not available.
She is getting treatment in Mexico, and that is the only info I have.
She already has the breast cancer in her lungs and bones.
She just went for her first chemo treatment, but before the treatment, they got the cardio results, and the “water on the heart” diagnosis came up….
Is this typical of something for breast cancer patients?
Please don’t cut and paste from self-diagnosis websites.
I need to know your personal knowlege and experiences with this occurence.
(Do most b cancer patients have this when the cancer has spread to the heart?)

Cardiac tamponade can result from malignant pericardial effusion and often occurs precipitously. The most common causes are breast cancer, lung cancer, and lymphoma.

Stevia cures cancer. Lots of it. Make water very, very sweet with stevia, drink it all day, your cancer and fat will vanish like magic. I have case evidences and all the proof, but need to get this ‘on tape’ for validation/verification that’ll take this discovery to Nobel Prize land and save millions of lives, and your own, in the process

How much weight and how fatigued would one be if they had stage IV (any) cancer?
Question by WTFFTW: How much weight and how fatigued would one be if they had stage IV (any) cancer?
Had a little scare a while ago. I must have had some bug because I’d be getting up around 10 AM and going to bed around 9 PM (albeit laying in that bed in between). I’ve since gotten better, still feeling fatigued though (probably from all the anxiety). I’m able to stay up for 15 or 16 hours with caffeine. I also lost 5 lbs in a week, getting down to 150 at lowest, but I’ve been gaining a little weight since my appetite returned a few weeks ago (around 3 lbs). The only medication I’ve been taking is Tylenol to soothe some of my tension headaches. If I had metastasized cancer, would I be feeling even more fatigued and be losing even more weight? I’m an 18 year old, 5’9″ male, and my weight seems to be healthy for my age and height.
I haven’t been diagnosed with anything, I’ve just been feeling really weird lately. I may have a few symptoms of colon and oral cancer, but there are inconsistencies (i.e. no blood in stool and they are usually normal size – more like IBS probably, and my sore throat began before my lymph nodes enlarged). I just get really worried because of what happened to my father, and I’d like it if I got some straight answers regarding the question instead of questions about my personal history. Sorry, but I just get annoyed when people respond without actually answering the question, but I’ll get over it.

Can you go from stage 4 lung cancer to 3?
Question by Jennna_x: Can you go from stage 4 lung cancer to 3?
My father was diagnosed with stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. He has been having this untreated since last june but doctors kept assuming it was just a disc problem and ignored it. This month we found out it had spread to his back and formed a tumor. Two weeks ago the doctor operated and was able to completely remove the tumor and clean around it and also put a bone structure to keep his bones strong and well. He starts chemo in 2 weeks. Does anyone have any advice? Its already a miracle that he went almost 9 months untreated and is still here with us. We asked the doctors about the cancer now and they said its not in any other part of the body, just his lungs now. Does this mean it’s no longer stage4? Also he doesn’t show any symptoms at all and is joking around and hanging out with us as if everything is okay with no signs of lung cancer. Before the operation the doctors were very pessimistic and after they were able to clean out his back they back so much more optimistic and happier.
I know I already asked a similar question, I just have so many questions and unfortunately the doctors here are always in a rush and don’t like answering our questions. This is the first time were ever going through something like this and it’s really hard. Thank you for all your help!
-I asked why it was stage 4 and the said because it spread to his back and formed that tumor. But the doctor took the risky option of operating and he was able to successfully remove the entire thing and clean around it

Stage 4 means it has spread to an area beyond the original tumor, which usually results in it being terminal. Do you know why they called it stage 4? Are you sure it wasn’t in another area as well?

This is the time to make a tough choice.
He can spend time seeking treatment, which has side effects and be miserable . It’s obvious that the cancer keeps spreading despite all the treatments he’s already had.
or:
He can live out the rest of his life with family, loved ones, and friends in peace, doing whatever things he is capable of that he enjoys. He can reminisce, share stories about his parents and grandparents that can be passed down to the next generation.
My Dad died of bone cancer, which is the most painful of all cancers. He elected to stay at home without TX enjoying his Met games, his western books and his family.
I was the only one he was able to talk about death with; the other family could not handle the topic.
Bless you & your Dad whatever decision he makes. You need to respect his decision even if you disagree…It is HIS life.

Answer by ssyd99
Surgery: the most effective, the 5 year survival rate is >75%, that means that 3 out of four of those diagnosed with stage I small cell carcinoma will survive 5 years after the diagnosis is made if they have surgery.
Radiation: much less effective than surgery, usually used if surgery isn’t recommended for any reason. It can alleviate some of the distressing symptoms of small cell carcinoma.
Chemotherapy(multiple)/Radiotherapy combination: Somewhat good results, nothing as good as surgery. Alleviates some of the symptoms, the outcome isn’t as good as surgery.
The best available therapy is surgery, it has the best survival rate.
Chemotherapy side effects, you’d have to ask your doctor/someone else.

Stage IV colon cancer odds?
Question by Maria: Stage IV colon cancer odds?
For anyone who knows more about this, please help me out!
My dad was diagnosed with cancer in Fall of 2008. At the time it was only in his colon. He went through chemo & radiation at the time and had surgery in the spring. A while after that, they found cancer in his liver also. They did surgery to remove the cancerous spots and ended up cutting out half his liver. Going through chemo and radiation in between all of these times, a while later they found cancer spots in his lungs also. They did a surgery to remove the spots (this was last year, in the summer of 2010). Things seemed to be going well for the past year with repeated scans. In December 2011 (just under 2 months ago) They found another possible spot in his lungs and he is back on chemo. For anyone with experience or knows anything about this, what are my dad’s chances? Thanks for any info

It depends on a billion things and would be different for everyone.
And some people’s cancer gets caught at stage 1 and never goes to stage II and some people’s cancer gets caught at stage IV and they live a long time and maybe treatment can just make the stages go slower.

It really depends on the tissue type (smallcell lung cancer /squamous /large cell etc) and the degree to which the cancer has spread in the body. If this is small cell lung cancer usually less than 6 months. For others type of lung cancers at stage 4 it can range from a few weeks to 2 years.
Your oncologist is the best person to give more details.
