Q&A: Small Cell Lung Cancer – Tumor stopped growing.?

Question by : Small Cell Lung Cancer – Tumor stopped growing.?
My father was told a month ago that he has small cell lung cancer. I’m not sure if it was described as limited or extensive but it is in his lymph nodes but his liver is clear. He has never smoked. He is undergoing chemotherapy. It is treatable but incurable apparently. He has undergone 3 rounds of chemotherapy. They have told him that the tumor has not grown anymore. He is putting on weight and is using less pain medication then his doctors expected. He has reacted pretty well to the treatment. The fact that the tumor hasn’t shrink worries me. I am living a long way away at the moment and am wondering whether to move back permanently. I don’t want to loose all hope but from what I have read he is unlikely to live longer than a couple of months. Is there any hope that he might survive and enjoy a few reasonably happy years?

Wow! I am sorry you’re going through this.

I don’t want to say something that isn’t completely accurate and cancer isn’t something I’m very familiar with (my family has had breast cancer and leukemia in some of the older generations but not lung cancer)…Did they mention anything about doing a resection or any kind of surgery to remove the tumor? It’s good that it’s not growing but not so great that it’s not shrinking either…like you said…

I’m not really sure what to say. I keep erasing what I type because I don’t want to give you false hope but my suggestion..and I’m not even all that religious… is to get down on your knees and pray. Ask everyone you’re close to to do the same. Miracles can happen.

According to my research:

“For small cell lung carcinoma, prognosis is also generally poor. The overall five-year survival for patients with SCLC is about 5%.[3] Patients with extensive-stage SCLC have an average five-year survival rate of less than 1%. The median survival time for limited-stage disease is 20 months, with a five-year survival rate of 20%.[5]“

If there were a surgery that stopped the aging of all of your cells would you go through with it?

cancer of the heart
by Christiana Care

Question by Ichigo: If there were a surgery that stopped the aging of all of your cells would you go through with it?
Lets say it prevented you from getting cancer, heart disease and dying from old age or genetic disorders. But there is a catch: you can never eat fast food once you go through with the surgery.

Answer by luvmycoke29
LOL, sounds like a trick question! I would definitely stop the aging and prevent diseases.

Q&A: My dad has stopped eating. He has transverse myelitis, MS, and lung cancer. He is 79 years old.?

Question by pugles2010: My dad has stopped eating. He has transverse myelitis, MS, and lung cancer. He is 79 years old.?
While undergoing chemotherapy and radiation, his esophagus was burned. CT scans show that the tumor cells have diminished, but he developed an atonic mega colon as a result of the chemotherapy. He also has tranverse myelitis and Multiple Sclerosis. He won’t eat and is being fed intraveneously in the hospital with nutrients, vitamins and minerals that provide him with 3000 calories per day. He cannot feed himself and when we feed him, he never takes more than 3 – 4 bites of food per day. He barely moves and we are lucky if he chooses to sit in a chair for fifteen minutes. His speech is often slurred. The only alternative that we have is to get him strong enough for surgery for the atonic mega colon but he often refuses the physical therapy as it is too much work for him and he is worn out afterwards. We fear that the MS is really kicking in from his lack of movement. He has been in the hospital for 3 weeks and nearly bedridden for 60 days. Is there any hope that he will recover?

Best answer:

Answer by tigger34
Every person heals differently but you are right non movement tends to make some things worse. Have any of your family members talked to him and asked HIM what he wants? Due to the pain and the lack of desire to maintain I would say that your father has a failure to thrieve. Meaning that instead of berdening his loved ones and making things harder for him, he has given up. Someone while he is able should talk to him. Let him decide how much more he can take. That would mean the world to him I am sure. My best to you and your family

Hi,

I’d not concern yourself with your dad’s medical condition, and instead look at what is important to you. Your moving really shouldn’t be based on your dad’s immediate medical condition. Eventually everyone dies.

You mention a desire to “move back permanently” — forever is a mighty long time.

So if you have it in you, and you have the means to do it, move back for now. You can always move somewhere else later.

Our cat is going to die soon. She has lung cancer. She has stopped eating and is brething with discomfort.?

Question by rizwan602: Our cat is going to die soon. She has lung cancer. She has stopped eating and is brething with discomfort.?
Her brething is deep but she exhales with some force. Sometimes (for a couple of minutes) she is brething with her mouth open and most other time she is brething through her nose.

Her cancer was diagnosed in November 06 and she was given 3 months to live. She has shown no signs of illness until 2 weeks ago when we noticed her heavy breaths. She still was playful and eating but for the last 2 days she has stopped eating.

We are periodically feeding her what the doctor recommends. We are making her ingest liquids and some solid foods.

What I want to know is when is the time to take her in for euthanization? What are the symptoms that she is hours or minutes away from dying a painful death?

We do not want do it too soon because what if she is sick from something else and she recovers? I do not want to think I killed her by being impatient?

She still responds to calling by moving her tail. She walks slowly and just lays down.

What are the signs that she is near?
She does not have her mouth open right now. Sometimes she will brethe with her mouth slighly open.

What I am afraid of is if we euthanize her, we may be killing her because she is lethargic from another ailment and the lung cancer is not whats causing her discomfort. What if she makes it back to how she was in a few days? Maybe the lung cancer will take her in 2 months instead of now. We do not want to kill her … what should we wait for as far as symptoms of nearby death from lung cancer? Coughing? Blood coming out? We have for now decided that if we see any prolonged discomfort in brething, we will euthanize her. But I want to know what to look for.

Thank you all!

So sorry to hear that..!!
Please stay with her and make it easy and talk to her…
I thinks its near her time…
When she stop breathing altogether…!!!
Love her and see she likes anything to eat or not to worry
Maybe anything her favourite toy…???
My heart go out for you…
Its painful.. and I know how you feel.
I had my ragdoll that fell from 8 storey high and died….
Take good care of her in her last fews days or hours…

When colon cancer has spread to lungs and liver & treatment is stopped how long can a person live?

lung cancer complications
by drp

Question by : When colon cancer has spread to lungs and liver & treatment is stopped how long can a person live?
My dad has had colon cancer for maybe 5 years now, the last 5 years through this his health has been up and down and up and down. To make a very long story short he is now at the point where the cancer has spread to his lungs and liver, and can not handle anymore chemo, surgeries, or any treatments. His oncologist says he wants to just keep him “comfortable”. Right now my dad seems to be doing and feeling alright. Which is shocking to me because his CEA is 1,300. Four weeks ago it was about 1,075. And and x-ray yesterday showed the leasions on his lungs. His only complication is a cough and some diarrhea. How long can this last? What does a CEA level that is this high really mean?

Best answer:

Answer by notalonewithcancer
Hi Brian, No, you aren’t fooling yourself in believing there may be hope with small cell… but just prepare for very bumpy roads ahead. I have non small cell, chemo isn’t dissolving any of my tumors but is keeping me stable at the present. Chemo actually reacts quite positively against small cell, it can rid the body often of the tumors.. the down side is that it nearly always comes back to hit the body again. Frequent testing is required for early recurrence. One thing I don’t know if your father’s oncologist has discussed with him is that lung cancer often likes to hide in the brain. Preventative whole brain radiation is often recommended.

Can breast cancer be stopped once it has mastestisized to the lymph nodes?

lymph nodes cancer
by wiccked

Question by skahhh: Can breast cancer be stopped once it has mastestisized to the lymph nodes?
They have these stages of cancer. And they up the stages for the number of nodes that are affected. But if you get good chemo, what is the difference? Doesn’t the chemo kill all the cancer anyways? From the lymph nodes it goes to the organs right? And if it is not detected in the organs, doesn’t the chemo stop it cold?

Best answer:

Answer by knittinmama
Yes, cancer can be stopped once in the lymph nodes. I had stage II breast cancer (in breast and lymph nodes) and doing fine now. Also people do recover from lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes)

Terminal lung cancer, treatment stopped, how long to live?

Question by esherr: Terminal lung cancer, treatment stopped, how long to live?
My father has terminal lung cancer. It has progressed to the point that the doctor have stopped treatment, have him in the ICU (clots) and each day his chest xrays just look worse and worse. He has an oxygen mask on and his vitals continue to be weak. He struggles to stay awake cause he completely fears death. Does anyone know of anyone who has held on this long… and how long could he continue to hold on?
he cant be moved right now to Hospice because when he sits up or stands his heart rate plummets. Plus we found out today that his body is forming antibodies against the anti-clotting medication…

Its very sad. I am 6 months pregnant and several states away, my doctor cannot clear me to go see him becuase I am very high risk and require weekly shots and evals. It is very hard and I feel very helpless and useless. He even told me not to travel but its so hard.

My mom had the same illness. Is there anyway he can go home and receive palliative care? When my mom went home, she did better being out of the hospital surroundings. She held on for about a month. Bless you, I know it is so hard.

at what year did house builders stopped using asbestos?

Question by jammy s: at what year did house builders stopped using asbestos?
i am buying a low cost house. I wanted to know what year the government banned the use of asbestos so I can make a good decision when buying an older house. please help!!!

Best answer:

Answer by worldstiti
i think it was the 50′s but i have been in younger builings with asbestos, then there is lead based paints – also deadly, they were used into the 70′s. In the 80′s they stopped using aluminum in electrical wiring, which can cause electrical fires over time. my advice, have your home checked out well, and when you buy your home be sure there is a clause there that if you find deadly materials within the first 5 years the sale can be reversed. Also look out for mold…
